Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, hello everybody
.
Welcome back to the BibleBreakdown podcast with your host
, pastor Brandon.
Today, mark, chapter 5, andtoday's title is the King has no
Rivals.
The King has no Rivals.
And what today's podcast makesme think about is I was
listening to these famousbasketball players talk about
(00:24):
one time when they had thisevent, and it was this amazing
event where all of the livingpeople who were in the
Basketball Hall of Fame were allcoming together and it was just
this massive event, this thing.
And this guy who was beinginterviewed I can't remember his
name right now, but he's a Hallof Famer and he was talking
with a couple other guys and hesaid there was a moment when I
(00:47):
knew Michael Jordan wasdifferent, he said, because he
had recently been inducted intothe Hall of Fame himself.
And he said you know, I'mstanding around and I'm seeing
some of these greats who wereall standing around me and he's
like I'm kind of fanboying out alittle bit here.
Some of these guys were some ofmy heroes as I was growing up,
right, and he said, all of asudden, all these guys that I
(01:10):
idolized all got quiet and theyall just kind of looked over to
one side of the room and he said, as we all looked over, all of
a sudden Michael Jordan comeswalking in.
And he said he comes walking inand he looks at everybody,
everybody, and he's smiling atthis one, he's heading on that
one, but he walks right to thefront of the line and then we
all walk in together and nobodyargued the point and he's like
(01:32):
that's the moment I realized allyou fans, y'all may talk about
who's the greatest, he said, butamong those who know, among the
greats, everybody knows who'sthe greatest.
You know what I mean and that'swhat I think about when I think
about this podcast.
You know people for all of timeare talking about.
You know, is Jesus really God?
Is he really this?
(01:53):
Can I guarantee you, in thespirit world ain't nobody having
a discussion on who Jesus is.
He is the king and there is norival.

Well, if you've been with us forthe past few days, we've been
talking about this idea of theGospel of Mark and there are
four Gospels Matthew, mark, lukeand John and one of the best
ways to really describe the Bookof Mark is the Gospel in motion
(02:40):
.
If you think about it, matthewand Luke start with the birth
narrative of Jesus, how all thisgot started.
The Gospel of John really goesback to the beginning of time
and he says in the beginning wasthe Word?
Mark just jumps right into themiracles and, as we've been
talking about, mark was mostlikely kind of ghostwritten by
(03:00):
Peter.
Peter was preaching in Rome andMark John.
Mark was the guy who was kindof dictating what he was saying
and translating for him, andthat's where we got the gospel
of Mark and that's exactly whatyou expect.
You know, anything coming fromPeter is just let's just get
into it and that's what he'sbeen doing.
That's why I think it was likeover 30 times, was it that he'll
(03:22):
say immediately or instantly orjust then, and just constantly
moving as we see Jesus with hispeople?
He is the king, but he is notstanding above the people the
way he very well could, but heis with the people as a servant,
a suffering servant with thepeople.
And what we're going to seetoday in chapter 5 is we're
(03:43):
going to see how there are manyenemies to Jesus, but he stands
alone and has no rivals.
So let's jump into thistogether If you're ready which,
by the way, yes for those of youwho are LeBron fans, I did just
compare a story about MichaelJordan to Jesus, but they are
not the same thing.
Okay, so don't send me youremails.
All right, here we go.
Chapter 5, verse 1 says this.
(04:05):
So they arrived at the otherside of the lake in the region
of the Gennesares.
When Jesus climbed out of theboat, a man possessed by an evil
spirit came out of the tombs tomeet him.
This man lived in the burialcaves and could no longer be
restrained, even with a chain.
Whenever he was put into chainsand shackles, as he often was,
(04:28):
he snapped the chains from hiswrists and smashed the shackles.
No one was strong enough tosubdue him.
Day and night, he wanderedamong the burial caves in the
hills, howling, cutting himselfwith sharp stones, when Jesus
was still some distance away.
The man saw him, ran to meethim and bowed low before him
(04:50):
With a shriek.
He screamed why are youinterfering with me, jesus, son
of the Most High God?
In the name of God, I beg youdon't torture me, for Jesus had
already said to the spirit Comeout of the man, you evil spirit.
And then Jesus demanded, and hereplied Now pause for a second.
(05:15):
One of the things that's veryinteresting is, especially
during the time, to callsomething by its first name was
to take away the authority of athing.
For instance, if you're in asituation where there's a
teacher in the classroom andyou're supposed to call that
teacher, mr Cannon, but thensomeone walks up and says, hey,
brandon.
Well, that is to take away frommy authority as a teacher.
(05:38):
So in the time, what manyscholars believe was happening
is just before that, the demonsaid Jesus, son of the Most High
God.
What he was doing is he wasactually being disrespectful.
He was saying I know who youare.
You're nobody special, I knowyour name.
Well, jesus comes back and hesays what is your name?
And this demon had no abilityto deny it.
(06:02):
He had to tell the truth.
So with that what the Bibledescribes.
It is not always prescribed andso the Bible is not saying that
you should go around to anybodythat you may think have a
demonic issue and demand to knowthe name of whatever.
Jesus is taking the authorityaway from this demon, saying you
have no power over me by sayingthis Okay, verse 10.
(06:22):
Then the evil spirits beggedagain and again not to send them
to some distant place.
There happened to be a largeherd of pigs feeding on the
hillside nearby.
Send us into those pigs.
The spirits demanded Let usenter them.
Jesus gave permission and theevil spirits came out of the man
and entered the pigs and theentire herd about 2,000 pigs
(06:45):
plunged down to the steephillside into the lake and was
drowned in the water.
The herdsmen fled to the nearbytown and the surrounding
countryside, spreading the news.
As they ran, people rushed outto see what had happened.
A crowd soon gathered aroundJesus and, as they saw the man
who had been possessed by thelegion of demons, he was sitting
(07:08):
there fully clothed, perfectlysane, and they were all afraid.
Then those who had seen whathad happened told the others
about the demon possessed manand the pigs, and the crowds
began pleading with Jesus to goaway and leave them alone.
As Jesus was getting into theboat, the man who had been
demon-possessed, begged to gowith him, but Jesus said no, go
(07:29):
home to your family, tell themeverything the Lord has done for
you and how merciful he hasbeen to you.
So the man started off to visitthe ten towns of that region
and began to proclaim the greatthings Jesus had done for him,
and everyone was amazed at whathe told them.
Now what had happened was is inthat place, none of the Jewish
(07:51):
people would have been raisingpigs.
They were not kosher, not good, and so what many scholars
believe was happening is thesepigs may have been being raised
to offer as idol worship, because one of the number one
gods quote unquote gods that youwould worship was the god Zeus,
and one of the ways you wouldworship the god Zeus is with pig
(08:11):
sacrifices.
And so what actually a lot ofpeople are thinking is these
were actually being raised foridol worship, and that's why the
demons would have wanted to gointo the pigs, because idol
worship is their thing, right?
And so Jesus says sure, go.
But then he still gets the lastlaugh because he killed the
pigs, which saved them frombeing sacrificed, and he took
(08:32):
away their ability to do idolworship.
So, as you could say, that isthe first case of deviled ham.
Let's move on quickly, verse21,.
Jesus got into the boat againand went back to the other side
of the lake, where a large crowdgathered around him on the
shore.
Then a leader of the localsynagogue, whose name was Dairus
, arrived.
When he saw Jesus, he fell athis feet, pleading fervently
(08:53):
with him.
When he saw Jesus, he fell athis feet, pleading fervently
with him my daughter is dying.
Please come and lay your handson her and heal her so she can
live.
Jesus went with him and all thepeople followed, crowding
around him.
(09:14):
A woman in the crowd who hadsuffered for 12 years with
constant bleeding had suffered agreat deal from many doctors
and over the years she had spenteverything she had to pay them.
But she had not gotten anybetter.
In fact, she had gotten worse.
She heard about Jesus, so shecame up behind him, threw the
crowd and touched his robe.
She thought to herself if I canjust touch his robe, I will be
(09:35):
healed.
Immediately the bleedingstopped and she could feel in
her body that she had beenhealed of the terrible condition
.
Jesus realized at once that thehealing power had gone out from
him.
So he turned around in thecrowd and asked who touched my
robe?
The disciples said to him Lookat this crowd of people pressing
around you.
How can you ask who touched me?
(09:57):
But he kept on looking aroundto see who had done it.
Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of
what had happened, came to herexcuse me.
Realizing what had happened toher, came and fell to her knees
in front of him and told himwhat she had done.
He said to her daughter yourfaith has made you well.
(10:18):
Go in peace.
Your suffering is over.
Now pause again for a second.
Many times that right there isconfusing.
When they go, wait a minute.
What does he mean when he saysthat your faith has made you
well, as though they actuallyhad the power to heal themselves
?
That is not what he's saying.
He's saying your willingness tocome to me is what saved you,
(10:38):
is what healed you.
So, over and over again, we'regoing to see Jesus say it is
your faith that has done this.
What he is saying is you hadthe courage, the gut, the
tenacity, whatever you want tocall it.
You came to me.
That was the right choice.
That's what he's saying overand over again, verse 35,.
While he was still speaking to,her, messengers arrived from the
home of Jairus, the leader ofthe synagogue, and he told them.
(11:00):
Then Jesus stopped the crowdand wouldn't let anyone go in
except Peter James and John, thebrother of James, and wouldn't
let anyone go in except PeterJames and John, the brother of
James.
When they came to the home ofthe synagogue leader, jesus saw
(11:22):
much commotion, weeping andwailing and he said why all this
commotion and weeping?
This child isn't dead, she'sonly asleep.
The crowd laughed at him, buthe made them all leave and he
took the girl's father andmother and the three disciples
and went into the room where shewas lying, holding her hand.
He said to her Talitha kum, which means little girl, get up.
(11:44):
And the girl.
And the girl, who was 12 yearsold, immediately stood up and
walked around and they wereoverwhelmed and totally amazed.
Jesus gave them strict ordersnot to tell anyone what had
happened and then he told themto give her something to eat.
Wow, as you see in this, jesus, the King of Kings and the Lord
(12:05):
of Lords, he is not sitting on athrone in this moment, which he
could have very well done.
He is not just proclaiming hisgreatness, which he could have
very well done.
You know.
What he's doing is he is goingout among the people and he is
rescuing these people.
There is a man who is demonpossessed, that people had tried
not to heal but just to bind.
That's all they knew how to do.
(12:26):
Jesus doesn't bind him, he setshim free and he tells them go,
tell your family that you arenow free.
I love how there was anotherlady who she had.
Not only has she suffered formany years of this disease, but
she had seemingly been forgottenby the rest of the crowd.
And instead of turning her away, when he finds out, he says you
(12:48):
had the faith to come to me.
You're healed.
And then, when all hope is lost, jesus heals this dead little
girl.
So the devil can't overcome you, sickness can't overcome you,
not even death can overcomeJesus.
That's why I'm telling you, Ithink, that if we could get a
(13:09):
just a peek into the world ofthe spirit, we would not have to
wonder who is the real king ofKings and Lord of Lords, just
like I was telling you my sillyexample of all of those
basketball players who are inthe hall of fame.
They said, when Michael Jordanshowed up instantly you could
tell who the real greatest ofall time was was because all
these people who had all thesetitles, nobody was looking at
(13:32):
themselves anymore.
They're all looking at thegreatest of all time.
I think if we really start tothink about it, we realize we
know who the King of Kings is.
We know exactly who the Lord ofLords is, and he is the one who
died for us and rose again.
And what that means to you isis that's your king, which means
nothing you encounter in lifecan overwhelm you, can overcome
(13:54):
you, because he is your king.
Now that does not mean that wewill not go through difficult
times.
It just means, if we go throughdifficult times, the king goes
with us and wherever he goes, hebrings all that.
He is with him, and so whereverwe are, that is the safest
place to be because the king iswith us.
(14:14):
Let's pray together right now.
God, thank you so much fortoday.
Thank you, god, that you arewith us and that you are for us
and Lord.
In life so many times there's somany things we go through that
we don't understand.
What we need to understand isthat you are with us and that
you are for us.
And, lord, when you are with us, there's going to be times when
the devil is going to attack, times when sickness is going to
(14:36):
happen, times when death will beclose, but we know that they
hold no candle to you becauseyou have many enemies, but the
king has no rivals, and so wetrust you in all things.
In Jesus' name, we pray Amen.
Amen.
God's word says in Mark 8,verse 34,.
He says if anyone would comeafter me, let him deny himself,
take up his cross and follow me.
(14:57):
We have a king worth serving.
He is the gospel in motion.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow for Markchapter.
