Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, hello everybody
.
Welcome back to the BibleBreakdown podcast with your host
, pastor Brandon.
Today, matthew chapter 6, andtoday's title is Kingdom Living
201.
So we've been in this situationwhere God is talking to us
about what it is to live in thekingdom of God.
Jesus is kind of taking usthrough some college classes.
(00:20):
Yesterday, matthew 5 wasKingdom Living 101, and today he
takes it even further into 201.
So we're going to dive intothat and he is going to talk
about a proper way to pray.
And he is I'm telling you, listen, he's going to get like
old school Pentecostal, talkingabout worry.
It's going to hurt my feelings,he might hurt yours, but we're
(00:40):
going to be all right.
So, if you have your Bibles, want to open up with me to
Matthew chapter six.
If you're new around here, while you're doing that, make
sure you also take just a momentto like, share and subscribe to
the YouTube channel and thepodcast.
Make sure you leave us afive-star review on the podcast.
It really does help, and Iwould love to know from you if
you are engaging with God's word.
What is it about engaging withGod's word that you are really
(01:03):
getting something from?
I want you to put that in thereview, because we want to get
better, and if you are tellingus that something is working, we
want to then do more of that.
So make sure you do that andmake sure you're going to the
Bible Breakdown Discussion onFacebook.
There's an amazing group ofpeople doing a wonderful job and
, as always, the more we dig,the more we find.
One last thing before we getinto that dig, the more we find
(01:23):
One last thing before we getinto that.
I know some people don't doFacebook.
You've gotten all Facebooksocial media in general, and if
that's the case, you can go tothebiblebreakdowncom.
We've also got devotions there.
Okay, all right.
Well, if you've been with us forthe past few days, we have been
diving into this idea ofMatthew being all about King
Jesus.
Now, one of the great thingsabout that is is there are four
(01:45):
gospels Matthew, mark, luke andJohn.
And Matthew is primarilywritten to the Jewish nation and
he is just telling them thatJesus is the rightful king.
And in chapter one he bringsreceipts and he's saying listen,
I can prove at least that hehas got a claim to the earthly
throne.
And then he spends chapter twothrough 28 saying not just the
earthly throne, he owns it all,and it's been amazing to watch
(02:07):
how the narrative of Jesus isbuilding and then yesterday in
chapter 5, he started talkingabout kingdom living and in
chapter 5, it was really a lotof how we relate to the overall
world being salt and light inthe world and really getting
back to a heart posture beforeGod.
Well, today, in chapter six, wecould talk about this one being
(02:28):
not all of it, but a lot of itbeing how we relate to God, and
there's other parts in thereabout how we worship God, how we
pray to God and then how werelate to his goodness.
So it's going to be reallyreally good and it's the ending
that I'm telling you.
It's really beautiful and hardto do at the same time.
(02:49):
So let's just get there andwe'll see what God's Word has to
say.
You ready?
Matthew 6, verse 1 says this.
He says Watch out.
Don't do your good deedspublicly to be admired by others
, for you will lose your rewardfrom your Father in heaven when
you give to someone in need.
Don't do as the hypocrites do,blowing trumpets at the
(03:10):
synagogues and streets to callattention to their acts of
charity.
I tell you the truth.
They have received all thereward they will ever get.
When you give to someone inneed, don't let your left hand
know what your right hand isdoing.
Give your gifts privately andyour father, who sees everything
, will reward you.
(03:30):
Pause, can you imagine somebodylike you go to church and
somebody blows a horn?
You know, I just gave $10.
Like well, good for you, buddy, you know, but that literally
was saying that they make big, like draw great attention to
themselves.
Hey, I just gave in theoffering today.
Well, there you go.
(03:52):
And God says great.
Well, that attaboy you just gotfrom your neighbor is all the
gift you're going to get, allthe rewards you're going to get.
But when you do things for theright reasons, then it blesses
people.
All right, verse 5.
When you pray, notice he's notsaying if you pray, but there is
an assumption here that you aregoing to pray.
So when you pray, don't praylike the hypocrites who love to
(04:15):
pray publicly on street cornersand in the synagogues where
everyone can see them.
I tell you the truth that isall the reward they're ever
going to get.
But when you pray once again, assuming you're going to pray go
away by yourself, shut the doorbehind you and pray to your
(04:35):
father in private, then yourfather, who sees everything,
will reward you.
And when you pray, don't babbleon and on as the Gentiles do,
for they think their prayerswill be answered merely by
repeating their words again andagain.
Don't be like them, for yourFather knows exactly what you
need before you ask him, pause.
Therefore, what Jesus is sayingis your Heavenly Father already
(04:59):
knows what you need.
Therefore, prayer is notintended to be a business
meeting with agenda items, likewe're not informing God about
what's going on in our life.
He is saying it's fellowship.
It's talking to God aboutsomething he already knows about
.
And he says do it like this, you ready.
Verse nine pray like this Ourfather in heaven, may your name
(05:21):
be kept holy.
May your kingdom come soon.
May your will be done on earthas it is in heaven.
Give us today the food we needand forgive us our sins, as we
have forgiven those who sinnedagainst us.
And do not let us yield totemptation, but rescue us from
the evil one.
And then he continues and hesays if you forgive those who
(05:42):
sin against you, your heavenlyFather will forgive you, but if
you refuse to forgive others, your heavenly Father will not
forgive your sin Now pause.
That doesn't mean that God isunable.
It just means that if you're ina heart posture where you are
unwilling to be forgiving, thenyou're probably going to be in a
heart posture where you're notgoing to sincerely ask God for
(06:03):
forgiveness as well.
Verse 15, or, excuse me, 16.
And when you fast?
So once again, he is assumingyou're going to fast.
When you fast, don't make itobvious as the hypocrites do,
for they try to look miserableand disheveled so people will
admire them for their fasting.
I tell you the truth, that isthe only reward they ever going
(06:25):
to get.
But when you fast, comb yourhair and wash your face, then no
one will notice that you arefasting, except your father, who
knows what you do in privateand as your father sees
everything, he will reward you.
He keeps going.
He says Don't store up treasureshere on earth, where moths eat
(06:45):
them and rust destroys them andwhere thieves break in and steal
.
Store your treasures in heaven, where moth and rust cannot
destroy and thieves do not breakin and steal.
Wherever your treasure is there, the desires of your heart will
also be.
Your eye is like a lamp thatprovides light to your body.
When your eye is healthy, yourwhole body is filled with light.
(07:07):
But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with
darkness.
And if the light you think youhave is actually darkness, how
deep that darkness is.
No one can serve two masters.
You will either hate one andlove the other, or be devoted to
one and despise the other.
You cannot serve God and beenslaved to money.
(07:29):
That is why I tell you do notworry about everyday life.
Now pause.
He's about to say the part thatis extremely convicting.
But before that, notice how healso says you have to be so very
careful with money.
There are so many things hecould have talked about, but the
number one thing he talks aboutis finances.
And you know why?
I think the reason why, of allthe other things he could have
(07:50):
talked about, he talked aboutmoney.
I think that it's probably thehardest for us to deal with,
because we try to get from moneywhat only God can provide.
We try to get safety, security, significance, acceptance all of
that from our finances and ourpossessions.
Well, all of that can only comefrom God.
That's why he is saying it'slike serving two masters You're
(08:10):
either going to serve God oryou're going to serve money.
You've got to decide, and hewants you to decide on him.
And then I love this.
He says this about worry andfear.
Here we go.
That is why I tell you not toworry about everyday life,
whether you have enough food anddrink or enough clothes to wear
.
Isn't life more than food andyour body more than clothing?
(08:33):
Look at the birds.
They do not plant or harvest orstore in barns, for your
Heavenly Father feeds them.
And aren't you more valuable toHim than they are?
Can all your worries add asingle moment to your life?
And why worry about yourclothing?
Look at the lilies of the fieldand how they grow.
They don't work or make theirclothing.
(08:56):
Yet Solomon in all of his glorywas not dressed as beautifully
as they are.
And if God cares so wonderfullyfor the wildflowers that are
here today and thrown into thefire tomorrow, he will certainly
care for you.
Why do you have so little faith?
So don't worry about thesethings saying what will we eat,
(09:17):
what will we drink, what will wewear?
These things dominate thethoughts of the unbelievers, but
your heavenly Father alreadyknows all your needs.
So seek the kingdom of Godabove all else and live
righteously, and he will giveyou everything you need.
So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own
(09:39):
worries.
Today's trouble is enough fortoday.
See what I mean?
That's terribly, terriblywonderful.
I heard someone say one timethat fear and worry is
functional atheism.
I won't let that hurt yourfeelings as much as it did mine
(10:00):
that fear and worry arefunctional atheism.
In other words, we say we loveGod, we say that we trust God,
but we don't really mean itFunctionally, we don't believe
God's.
For us, when we worry Now,there's a difference between
having a care and being consumedby worry.
Now, caring about somethingsuch as, let's say, you have
(10:23):
small kids and they're gettingready to go to school for their
first day and you have thisnatural worry of, hey, I hope
they have a good day today.
But then when you becomeconsumed by it, where you can't
think about anything else andnothing else will satisfy, then
you just hyper-focusing.
That's worry, being consumed byworry.
And what we are supposed to dois we pray, we talk to God and
(10:45):
we say God, I have no idea whatkind of day they're going to
have today, but I trust thatyou're going to be with them and
you leave it with him.
That's what we're supposed todo, and if we don't, then it's
almost like we're saying God, Idon't trust you.
That's hard, but that's thewonderful opportunity that God
lays out for us.
In chapter 6, jesus is tellingus that it's all about our heart
(11:08):
posture.
Again, chapter 5 is a heartposture toward the world.
Chapter 6 is a heart posturetoward God.
Notice how, at least twodifferent times, he said your
heavenly Father already knows.
Therefore, when we relate tohim, we're not doing something
for him he didn't already know, wasn't aware of.
We're relating to him as a formof fellowship.
(11:30):
And can I tell you, you evertaken the five love languages
test?
It's this wonderful thing Ifyou've ever taken it before.
There's the.
The test says that there arefive different ways we give and
receive love, and I'm going tomess these up, but it's like
gifts, words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch and
one more that I can't remember.
There's a total of five and thetest says that we receive, give
(11:51):
and receive all of these andyou can go to like
fivelovelanguagescom and you cansee.
It's all free.
And the best thing is is ifyou're married, you're a
significant other.
You should let them take thetest, because you want to give
them a form of love that they'regoing to appreciate right, and
I heard someone say one timeGod's love language is trust.
(12:13):
The number one thing that Godloves is when we choose to trust
Him.
That doesn't mean that Goddoesn't appreciate it when we
offer up praise and all theseother things.
Of course he does.
But the number one thing thatGod says over and over in his
word that we are to do thatbrings great pleasure to him is
(12:34):
when we trust him.
So I want to ask you thisquestion when is the last time
that you were in a difficultsituation and didn't make sense?
You had no idea what God wasdoing, but you just said God, I
choose to trust you.
I don't feel it.
To be honest with you, I got noidea how you're going to do it,
but that's not my business,it's yours.
(12:56):
I trust you.
That's hard, isn't it?
That's kingdom living.
And so what I want to do as weend our time together is I want
to pray that the Holy Spiritwill open your eyes and give you
a greater trust in him.
Let me pray for you right now.
God, thank you so much fortoday.
Thank you, god, that you areworthy of our trust, god.
You have proven yourself to usover and over again and we are
not going to hold you hostage toour next prayer request.
(13:18):
No matter what you do, we trustyou.
You are trustworthy.
You don't have to proveyourself anymore to us, but I
pray Holy Spirit, you'll openour eyes to get a bigger picture
of you and remember just howtrustworthy you are.
I'm thankful for you today.
In Jesus' name, we pray Amenand remember what God's Word
says in Matthew 28, verse 19.
(13:38):
It says All authority in heavenand on earth has been given to
me.
Go, therefore, and makedisciples of all nations.
My hope and prayer is that youwill become a disciple and
you'll become a disciple makerin your life every day.
I love you.
See you tomorrow.
I almost said Hebrews, matthew,chapter 7.
