Matthew, chapter 8, and today'stitle is Jesus, authority and
Action Jesus, authority andAction.
And what we are going to seetoday is Jesus has been talking
about what the kingdom of heavenlooks like.
(00:21):
Now he's going to show us whatthe kingdom of heaven looks like
in chapter 8.
And we're also going to get tosee a pattern as it begins to
develop over the course of therest of the book of Matthew.
So we're getting all that injust a moment, but, as always,
while you're opening your Bible, getting it ready, getting your
coffee cup ready, all the goodstuff.

There's an amazing group ofpeople doing a wonderful job and
, as always, the more we dig themore we find, and it is worth
telling you from time to time,if you don't do the Facebook
thing, you can go tothebiblebreakdowncom, and that's
(01:06):
also where we are doingdifferent devotions all the time
and we would love to see youthere.
Okay, all right.
Well, if you've been with us asyou're getting ready and all
the things we have been goingthrough, this idea of Jesus as
the King, king Jesus is theoverall big idea of the Gospel
of Matthew, and that's importantbecause Matthew is mostly
(01:27):
writing to the Jewish Christians, or perspective Christians and
Jewish people who've beenlooking for their Messiah and
they have been looking for anearthly king.
And so right out of the gate inMatthew chapter one, he says I
can prove to you he's like, he'sgot like his receipts, he's
showing him.
It's like, hey, listen, I gotreceipts, I can prove that at
the very least, jesus is theearthly king.
(01:49):
But then he spends chapter twothrough 28 saying but he is so
much more than just an earthlyking and he's been talking about
that and going through all ofthat.
And then we just got throughlooking at Matthew five, six and
seven, which is the most likelongest sermon that Jesus
preaches about.
And you get to see kind of asummary of this in the book of
(02:12):
Luke, but you get to see all ofit in the book of Matthew.
And what we're going to see aswe get into chapter 8 today is
we're going to begin to see thisthing that begins to happen, or
happens in the Gospel ofMatthew, and that is this Many
people think that when Matthewfirst wrote his Gospel, he
actually wrote it as littlepamphlets, as little pieces of
(02:35):
the ministry of Jesus, andpossibly up to five different
pamphlets that eventually he putinto one full Gospel.
And so what you see is is yousee five sections of the gospel
of Matthew, and so what you'llhave is you'll have a time when
Jesus will have a discourse.
He will talk for a while andthen he will go about, he will
(02:56):
show the kingdom of God.
So he'll tell you about thekingdom of God and then he shows
you what the kingdom of Godlooks like, and that happens
five different times.
And so what we just got throughseeing is we saw the origin
story of Jesus and then we sawthe first major discourse of
Jesus, and now, in chapter 8,we're going to see how Jesus
begins to show what the kingdomof heaven looks like.
(03:17):
So first he tells and then heshows, and so that's what
chapter 8 is going to be.
So let's jump into this, as welook at Jesus' authority and
action, and he just I meanstarts off with a bang.
So he had just finished talkingto this crowd.
It could have been up tobetween 5,000 and 15,000 people
at that point.
And then the Bible says inMatthew 8, verse 1, large crowds
(03:37):
followed Jesus as he came downthe mountainside.
So we just finished what he wassaying.
Suddenly a man with leprosyapproached him and knelt before
him.
Lord said the man, if you arewilling, you can make me clean.
Jesus reached out and touchedhim.
I am willing.
He said be healed.
(03:57):
And instantly the leprosydisappeared.
And then Jesus said to himdon't tell anyone about this.
Instead, go to the priest andlet him examine you, take along
the offering required in the lawof Moses for those who have
been healed of leprosy, and thiswill be a public testimony that
you have been cleansed.
Now pause.
(04:18):
The reason why Jesus would havetold him about this is this when
you came down with leprosy, they didn't have modern medicine
like they do now, and so whenyou came down with leprosy, it
was a disease that they couldn'theal.
The only thing they could do isquarantine you, and so you had
to leave your family, leaveeverything, and you had to go
and be away from everyone, basically until you die and you
(04:39):
lost your family, you lost yourproperty, you lost everything.
And then, if you thought thatthe leprosy had gone away,
according to the Old Testamentyou had to go back to the priest
.
They had to examine you.
They'd quarantine you, examineyou for 14 days and only then,
once the priest had pronouncedyou clean, could you go back and
reclaim all your stuff.
And so what Jesus is tellinghim is I'm not just interested
(05:02):
in healing you of your disease,I want to heal your life.
So I'm going to heal youphysically, and then I want you
to go get your wife back, go getyour property back, go get your
job back, go get your familyback.
And so I love this story somuch because Jesus wasn't just
interested in a momentaryhealing, he was interested in
the whole healing.
You got to love Jesus.
All right, here we go.
Verse five when Jesus returnedto Capernaum, a Roman officer
(05:26):
came and pleaded with him Lord,my young servant lies in bed,
paralyzed, in terrible pain.
And Jesus said I will come andheal him.
But the officer said Lord, I amnot worthy to have you come
into my home.
Just say the word from whereyou are and my servant will be
healed.
I know this because I am underauthority of my superior
(05:49):
officers.
I have authority over mysoldiers and I only need to say
go, and they go, or come andthey come.
And if I say to my slaves dothis, they do it.
Now pause.
What he's saying is is yourword has such authority that you
don't have to be there.
Just say the word and it's asgood as done.
That's what he's trying to say.
Verse 10,.
When Jesus heard this, he wasamazed.
(06:12):
Turning to those who werefollowing him, he said I tell
you the truth, I haven't seenfaith like this in all Israel.
And I tell you this that manyGentiles will come from all over
the world, from the east andwest, and sit down with Abraham,
isaac and Jacob at the feast inthe kingdom of heaven, but many
(06:32):
Israelites, those whom thekingdom was prepared, will be
thrown into outer darkness wherethey will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.
And then Jesus said to theRoman officers Go on back home,
because you have believed.
It has happened.
And the young man was healedthat same hour.
Wow, do you know what causesGod to be amazed?
Faith.
(06:53):
When we trust in him, it amazesGod.
Verse 14.
When Jesus arrived in Peter'shome, peter's mother-in-law was
sick in bed with a high fever, but when Jesus touched her hand
the fever left her and she gotup and prepared a meal for him.
And that evening manydemon-possessed people were
brought to Jesus and he cast outevil spirits with a simple
(07:15):
command and he healed all thesick.
This fulfilled the word throughthe prophet who said he took
our sicknesses and removed ourdiseases.
Now pause Two things there.
First of all, did you knowPeter was married?
There were actually probably afew of the different people in
Jesus' life that were probablymarried, and so Peter had a
(07:36):
mother-in-law.
And then also notice how it saysthat he would heal people of
evil spirits and how they madesure and put that in there.
The reason why was because oneof the hallmarks that they said
you know when the Messiah willcome, because he will have power
over evil spirits.
So every time Matthew says hehealed someone of an evil spirit
(07:56):
, he is waving a flag saying see, I told you he was the Messiah,
so make sure, every time we seethat you go.
Oh, that's what he's saying.
See, I told you he was theMessiah, so make sure every time
we see that you go.
Oh, that's what he's doing.
It's not just that he isproclaiming that he has power
over evil spirits, and he does.
It is a sign to point to himbeing the Messiah.
Okay, verse 18,.
When Jesus saw the crowds aroundhim, he instructed his
(08:18):
disciples to cross to the otherside of the lake.
Then one of the teachers ofreligious law said to him
teacher, I will follow youwherever you go.
And Jesus replied foxes havedens to live in and birds have
nests, but the son of man has noplace even to lay his head.
Another of his disciples saidLord, let me return home and
(08:39):
bury my father.
But Jesus told him follow meand let the spiritually dead
bury their own dead.
Then Jesus got into the boatand he started across the lake
with his disciples.
Suddenly, a fierce storm struckthe lake and the waves were
breaking into the boat, butJesus was sleeping.
Then the disciples went andwoke him, shouting Lord, save us
(09:03):
, we're going to drown.
But Jesus responded why are youafraid?
You have so little faith.
Then he got up and he rebukedthe wind and waves and suddenly
there was a great calm and thedisciples were amazed.
Who is this man?
They asked that even the windsand the waves obey him.
(09:24):
When Jesus arrived on the otherside of the lake, in the region
of the Gadarenes, two men whowere possessed by demons met him
and they came out of the tombsand were so violent that no one
could go through that area.
They began screaming at him, saying why are you interfering
with us, son of God?
Have you come to torture usbefore God's appointed time?
(09:44):
There happened to be largeherds of pigs feeding in the
distance.
So the demons begged If youcast us out, send.
Happened to be large herds ofpigs feeding in the distance, so
the demons begged if you castus out, send us to that herd of
pigs.
All right, go.
Jesus, commanded them.
So the demons came out of themen and entered the pigs and the
whole herd plunged down thesteep hillside into the lake and
(10:05):
drowned in the water.
And the herdsmen fled to thenearby town telling everyone
what had happened to thedemon-possessed men.
And then the entire town cameout to meet Jesus, but they
begged him to go away and leavethem alone.
Wow, so, as we can see, jesus isdoing all kinds of things and
(10:25):
there at the end.
What I think is amazing aboutthat is, first of all, jesus has
complete authority over thesedemonic spirits.
And they're begging and they'resaying why are you here?
It's not yet time for us to bedestroyed?
So that lets you know that thedevil knows he's fighting a
losing battle.
And so, just as a reminder thatthe devil's no longer trying to
(10:45):
win, he's trying to keep thegame going.
He already knows he's lost, butif he can keep the church from
doing the business of the GreatCommission and continuing to
reach, then he can just continuefor a long time.
At least he thinks so.
But God has an appointed timefor all things.
(11:05):
But then he also says you know, they were saying well, let us go
into the pigs.
Well, here's the reason mostlikely.
Why is because if they wereraising pigs in the area and
this would have been an areawhere Jewish people lived, and
Jewish people are kosher, theydon't eat pork this most likely
would have been people who wereraising pigs for idol worship,
to worship the God Zeus.
One of the main things thatthey would do to worship Zeus is
they would sacrifice a pig.
And so what they were hopingfor is they were going to go
(11:28):
into these pigs and they weregoing to be part of idol worship
.
But what was amazing is Jesusknowing this.
He ended up letting them gointo the pigs, but then the pigs
ran off of a cliff.
It's like your first example ofdeviled eggs ever or deviled
ham ever.
It's a really bad dad joke.
But the goal was actually Jesuswas killing two birds with one
stone, because not only was hegetting rid of the demons, he
(11:49):
was getting rid of the idolworship as well.
But the main idea that's goingon here is that Jesus is going
everywhere, and everywhere hegoes, he is showing the
authority that he has and theauthority of the kingdom of God
in action.
And what that means is is thatJesus has authority over every
situation in our life.
(12:10):
No matter what we're goingthrough, no matter what's going
on in our life, jesus hasauthority.
And so in your life right now, whatever's going on in your life
, jesus has authority.
So I want to encourage youtoday that it's important that
we talk to other people.
It's important that we getadvice from other people, we get
help from other people.
I'm not saying we shouldn't doany of those things.
(12:31):
What I am saying is we shouldalways be careful to make sure
that we're always going to Jesus, taking him all of our worries,
all of our cares, all of ourthings.
Because, as he showed in thischapter, jesus has got more
power and more authority thanwe're ever going to need, but we
got to trust him with it.
(12:52):
Imagine that leper at thebeginning of the chapter what if
he said, well, jesus is toobusy, or Jesus can't handle this
, or whatever's going on, jesuscan.
Your job is to come to him.
Jesus' job is the miracle.
So my question for you today iswhat situation are you going
through that you need to turnover to Jesus today?
(13:12):
Can we pray right now and talkto God about that?
Father, thank you so much fortoday.
Thank you that you are morethan enough for everything that
we need.
I pray that today, god, we willlearn to trust you more, we
will learn to give you more andwe'll learn to bring to you all
of our pain, all of ourweaknesses, all of our weariness
, and to know that we can trustyou in all things.
(13:34):
Lord, I pray you'll give us thecourage to do what we can do
and to trust you to do the rest, because you have all authority
and you put it in action foryour people today.
In Jesus' name we pray, amen, amen.
Well, god's word says inMatthew 28, verse 19,.
All authority in heaven andearth has been given to me.
(13:56):
Go, therefore, and makedisciples of all nations.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow forMatthew, chapter 9.
