Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, everybody,
welcome back to the Bible
Breakdown podcast with your host, pastor Brandon.
Today, matthew, chapter 14, andtoday's title is Kingdom
Expectations KingdomExpectations.
You ever been to a restaurantor something like that?
And it doesn't really matterwhere you go, like if it's a
chain restaurant, you kind ofknow exactly what you're going
(00:22):
to experience.
I knew a guy once who every timehe would go on a trip somewhere
, he would always eat at CrackerBarrel or the Waffle House you
want to talk about two verydifferent places and he would
say that he would say every timeI go somewhere, I am looking.
When it's time to eat, I'mlooking.
You know, I'm going tointerstate.
Where's the closest WaffleHouse, cracker barrel and I
(00:44):
remember one time being in agroup of people and they asked
him why in the world are youlooking for those two places?
He said because I know thatwhen I go there, I know I'm
going to get the same thing.
I know exactly what I'm goingto get.
I have an expectation and theexpectation is always met.
When I go to crack a barrel,it's always going to taste the
same.
When iacker Barrel, it's alwaysgoing to taste the same.
(01:04):
When I go to Waffle House, it'salways going to taste the same.
And he's like that's what Iwant, I want these expectations.
And he's like I'm neverdisappointed, I always get
exactly what I thought I wasgoing to get.
Well, in the kingdom of Godthere are great expectations, so
much better than the WaffleHouse or the Cracker Barrel I
almost said crocodile.
There's all these greatexpectations that we have and I
(01:26):
think sometimes one of thereasons why we struggle in being
part of the kingdom of God iswe have weird expectations,
right.
We think that things are onlygoing to be good or things are
only going to be bad, orsometimes our expectations are
nowhere near as big as what Godcan do.
So we're going to kind of letthe Lord kind of do a little
(01:48):
palate cleansing for us todayand letting us see that we have
no idea what great things willcome, and for some of us, maybe
we need to raise ourexpectations about what God can
do.
We're going to get into that injust a moment, but if you have
your Bibles, open up with me toMatthew, chapter 14.
As always, while you're doingthat, if you're new around here,

That way you can get that everysingle morning.

get on Facebook so much, I don'twant to get on there and go
through the feed.
Well, if you hit that link thatwe send you, it'll take you
straight to the discussion, soyou don't have to kind of
(02:55):
navigate through that stuff toget there.
Okay, all right.
Well, as we've been talkingabout over the past several days
now, the overall theme ofMatthew is that Jesus is the
King, king Jesus.
And in chapter 1, matthew isjust waving around the almost
like the kind of the, theancestral documents, and he's
(03:15):
saying I can prove to you thatJesus is at the very least.
He is the rightful earthly kingof Israel.
But then he spends chapter 2through 28 saying but he is so
much more than the king ofIsrael.
But then he spends chapter 2through 28 saying, but he is so
much more than the king ofIsrael.
He is the king of kings and theLord of lords.
And we've been seeing that asJesus is taking this upside down
world and turning it right sideup again, and we've been seeing
(03:38):
as he is continuing to buildthe kingdom of God.
And then in chapter 14, he isresetting the expectations.
He's going to talk about thereality at first, that in the
kingdom of God, bad thingshappen Like we need to make sure
we realize that we have thisworld that we live in, where
(04:00):
there's good things and there'sbad things happening, and the
presence of a storm is not theabsence of God.
But then also, when we comeinto those environments, when we
see something bad happening, there's also the expectation
that God is also up to something.
We're going to see him feed5,000 and then we're going to
see something even more amazingafter that and the challenge for
us is going to be what are yourexpectations in the kingdom of
(04:24):
heaven.
Heaven, is it time that youraise your expectation of God,
let's.
Let's jump into this together.
Matthew, chapter 14, verse 1,says this when Herod Antipas,
ruler of Galilee, heard aboutJesus, he said to his advisors
this must be John the Baptistraised from the dead.
That is why he can do suchmiracles.
(04:45):
For Herod had arrested andimprisoned John as a favor to
his wife, herodias, the formerwife of Herod's brother Philip.
John had been telling Herod itis against God's law for you to
marry her.
Herod wanted to kill John, buthe was afraid of a riot because
all the people believed John wasa prophet.
But at the birthday party ofHerod, herodias' daughter
(05:07):
performed a dance that greatlypleased him.
So he promised with a vow togive her anything she wanted,
and at her mother's urging, shesaid I want the head of John the
Baptist on a tray.
Then the king regretted what hehad said, but because of the
vow he had made in front of hisguests, he issued the necessary
orders.
So John was beheaded in theprison and his head was brought
(05:32):
on a tray and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
Later, john's disciples camefor his body and buried it.
Then they went and told Jesuswhat had happened.
So pause.
The first thing we have toremember is that in the kingdom
of God, just like we readyesterday, there are going to be
good people and there's goingto be people who are pretenders
(05:53):
they're not really in thekingdom of God.
They have a thousand otherreasons for coming close to
Jesus.
So it is not a bad thing torealize that bad things happen
even though we're citizens ofthe kingdom of God.
However, that's not all that ishappening.
The presence of a storm is notthe absence of God.
Watch what happens next.
Verse 13,.
(06:13):
As soon as Jesus heard the news,he left in a boat to a remote
area to be alone.
But the crowds heard where hewas and headed and followed on
foot for many towns.
When Jesus saw the huge crowds,he stepped from the boat and he
had compassion on them and hehealed their sick.
That evening the disciples cameto him and said this is a
(06:33):
remote place and it's alreadygetting late.
Send the crowds away so theycan go to the villages and buy
food for themselves.
But Jesus said that isn'tnecessary.
You feed them, but we have onlyfive loaves of bread and two
fish.
They answered Bring them hereto me.
Then he told the people to sitdown on the grass and Jesus took
(06:55):
five loaves and two fish.
He told the people to sit downon the grass and Jesus took five
loaves and two fish, looked uptoward heaven and blessed them.
Then, breaking the loaves intopieces, he gave the bread to the
disciples, who distributed itto the people, and they all ate
as much as they wanted, andafterward the disciples picked
up twelve baskets of leftovers.
About five thousand men werefed that day, in addition to all
(07:16):
the women and children.
5,000 men were fed that day, inaddition to all the women and
children.
Bible scholars have donedifferent types of mathematical
equations and they think itcould have been up to 15,000
people that Jesus fed with fiveloaves of bread and two fish, or
I guess some people say twofishes.
However, that works, but thereality is that with Jesus, a
little is always enough, raisingour expectation of the kingdom
(07:38):
of God.
Next, look what happens Inverse 22,.
Immediately after this, jesusinsisted that his disciples get
back into the boat and cross tothe other side of the lake while
he sent the people home.
After sending them home, hewent up to the hills by himself
to pray.
Night fell while they werealone.
Meanwhile, the disciples werein trouble, far away from land,
(08:00):
for a strong wind had risen andthey were fighting heavy waves.
About three o'clock in themorning, jesus came to them
walking on the water.
When the disciples saw himwalking on the water, they were
terrified.
Wouldn't you be?
And in their fear they criedout it's a ghost.
Terrified, wouldn't you be?
And in their fear they criedout it's a ghost.
(08:21):
But Jesus spoke to them at onceDon't be afraid, take courage,
I am here.
Then Peter called to him Lord,if it's really you, tell me to
come to you walking on the water, yes, come.
Jesus said.
So Peter, and I'm just going tokind of put in my own
parenthesis.
So Peter, before anybody elsecould grab him, went over the
side of the boat and walked onwater toward Jesus.
(08:43):
But when he saw the strongwinds and waves, he was
terrified and he began to sink.
Save me, lord, he shouted.
Jesus immediately reached outand grabbed him.
You have so little faith?
Jesus said why did you doubt me?
And when they climbed back intothe boat, the wind stopped.
Then the disciples worshipedhim, saying you really are the
(09:05):
Son of God, they exclaimed, andafter they had crossed the lake,
they landed at Gennesaret.
And when the people recognizedJesus, the news of his arrival
sped quickly throughout thewhole area and soon people were
bringing all their sick to behealed, and they begged him to
let the sick touch even theleast of the fringe of his robe,
(09:25):
and all who touched him werehealed.
Wow.
So what did we see?
In that?
We saw three major stories thathappened.
First of all, we saw that whenyou follow Jesus, bad things are
still going to happen.
John the Baptist was stillbetrayed, basically, and
(09:46):
beheaded.
Bad things will happen, but thepresence of God or the presence
of a storm is not always theabsence of God.
Then the second thing thathappened in the kingdom is you
can be doing a good thing butstill come to the end of your
strength.
They were rallying around Jesus, but they ran out of their food
(10:06):
.
They didn't have any more.
Following Jesus sometimes willget you to the end of your
resources, but in the kingdom ofheaven, it's not about what you
have, it's about what he has.
And when they got to the end oftheir resources, it was then
they were able to see the powerof God.
And then the third thing was isthat sometimes serving God will
(10:28):
lead you into a storm.
Notice how it said the reasonwhy they were in that boat was
because Jesus told them to youmess with your theology just a
little bit when you have somepeople who tell you that, man,
if you follow God, you're nevergoing to have a bad day, you're
always going to have greenlights when you're on the road,
your food will always be cookedperfectly and, in the name of
Jesus, your kids will neverpitch a fit.
(10:48):
Can I tell you something that?
And in the name of Jesus, yourkids will never pitch a fit.
Can I tell you something?
That is not my life story.
All right, my life story isquite the opposite of that,
other than I have perfect kidsin Jesus' name, right, but we
hear that, don't we?
But what do you do with thischapter, when being in the
kingdom of God means sometimesbad things are gonna happen to
good people.
Sometimes following God isgonna cause you to get to the
(11:11):
end of your resources, andfollowing God will sometimes
lead you directly into a storm.
Well, if you stop there, that'svery disappointing.
Keep reading that the presenceof a storm is not the absence of
God that getting to the end ofyour resources is sometimes the
best way for you to see theprovision of God.
(11:32):
And sometimes it is in themiddle of the storm where you
see Jesus the most clearly.
I love how Peter, who is aprofessional fisherman he knows
these waters, he knows howdangerous it is that this storm
is going, he knows what that is.
But the mentality of Jesus.
It may look like I'm safer inthis boat, but I really know I'm
(11:56):
safest wherever you are.
So if you're on the water, that's where I want to be, peter
.
That's crazy, that's impossible, I know.
But if that's where he is,that's what I want to be.
So I want to say one more timethat when you're in the kingdom
of God, when you're serving God,want to say one more time that
when you're in the kingdom ofGod, when you're serving God,
the Bible tells us in this life, jesus said in this life, you
will have trouble, but beencouraged, I have already
(12:25):
overcome the world.
Other words, there's nothingyou're going to face that is
greater than me.
Therefore, sometimes in thislife, bad things are going to
happen to great people.
Sometimes in this life, badthings are going to happen to
great people.
But the presence of a storm isnot the absence of God, that in
this life, sometimes, whenserving God, we will get to the
end of our answers, we'll get tothe end of our resources, but
(12:47):
sometimes we have to get to theend of our strength before we
can see the beginning of his.
And sometimes in life, when youfollow Jesus, he will lead you
directly in the path of a storm, but sometimes it's in the storm
where we see Jesus most clearly.
The amazing thing about God ishe is greater than we can
imagine.
So for some of us, maybe it'stime to lower our expectation of
(13:08):
man and raise our expectationof God.
Let's pray together right now.
God, thank you so much fortoday.
Thank you that your word istrue and it is alive and it
speaks to us even in this moment.
I pray for some maybe, god, whoare experiencing bad things,
experiencing the end of theirstrength, experiencing storms,
(13:29):
that you'll show them that youare close.
Strength experiencing storms.
That you'll show them that youare close, that you are powerful
and that you are present intheir life.
In Jesus' name, we pray Amen.
You know what God's word saysin Matthew 28, verse 18 or 19,.
It says all authority in heavenand on earth has been given to
me.
Go, therefore, and makedisciples of all nations.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow forMatthew, chapter 15.
