Well, once again, if you've beenwith us for the past while
we've been walking through thegospel of Matthew with this one
big idea, and that is Jesus isthe king.
And Matthew starts chapter onewith just waving the receipts
and going.
I can prove to you that he isthe rightful king of our earthly
kingdom.
But even more so, I'm going tospend the rest of this book
(01:25):
telling you how he is the kingof kings and the Lord of lords.
And today, in chapter 17, he isgoing to give us a glimpse of
the kingdom of God.
And what this reminds me of isI want to tell you how much of a
nerd I am and how old I am, andthat is this that when we, when
the Lord of the Rings firstcame out right Like the Lord of
(01:46):
the Rings, fellowship of theRing and then the second one,
when those first came out, Ididn't really watch them at
first.
I didn't know anything about it,didn't care anything about it.
Then I went and watched thefirst two movies and I was like,
wow, those were really good.
Actually, it turns out theywere amazing, and I got to
(02:10):
learning about who the author,know the the author, j J R R
Tolkien, and all this stuff.
I was super excited, and sothen I could not wait for the
third one to come out, and therewas a little bit of time that
had to pass before I was able towatch the preview of the third
Lord of the Rings.
And, when I tell you, when thatday came, I was ready to watch
the trailer for the movie justas much as people would have
been to actually see the movie.
I was so excited and so I waswaiting.
(02:31):
I was actually at work and itwas like at a certain moment
that third trailer was going todrop, and as soon as it did, I
remember just being on the edgeof my seat and just watching
like whoa.
And then what was even moreamazing is the next few days
they were going to startdropping different behind the
scenes things, and I was soexcited.
(02:51):
And when I watched the preview, the trailer of the third movie,
it got me so excited that, whenI tell you, almost every single
day I thought about what wascoming.
I couldn't wait.
And so it was amazing and itwasn't one of those things that
after I watched the trailer Iwas like, ah well, you know, I
guess that'll be there.
(03:12):
No, no, I kept going back to itand watching it over and over
again and watching thebehind-the-scenes stuff, so that
by the time it actuallyhappened I was so excited that
it was ridiculous.
That's the level of nerd that Iam and I used to be so much
into movies.
Well, today we're going to seethat, when it comes to what
happens to Jesus Rememberyesterday, at the end of the
(03:33):
chapter, as a matter of fact,I'll go ahead and read to you
the very last verse Jesus tellsthem.
He says I tell you the truth.
Some standing here right nowwill not die before they see the
son of man coming in hiskingdom.
In other words, they are notgoing to die before they see me
as the king, before they seewhat I look like in my kingdom
(03:55):
glory.
Well, today, in chapter 17,they get a trailer, they get a
preview of what Jesus looks like.
And Peter, god love him.
I'm so thankful for Peter.
He makes me feel better becausehe just does something stupid.
But I would do the exact samething, because what do you do
when you see the King of Kingsmove into his glory for just a
(04:20):
moment?
A little preview, a littletrailer.
So you ready, let's do this.
Chapter 17 a preview, a glimpseof the King in his kingdom.
Verse 1 says this six days later, jesus took Peter and the two
brothers, james and John, andled them up to a high mountain
to be alone.
As the men watched, jesusappearance transformed so that
(04:42):
his face shone like the Sun andhis clothes became as white as
light.
Suddenly, moses and Elijahappeared and began talking with
Jesus.
Peter exclaimed Lord, it iswonderful for us to be here.
If you want, we'll make threeshelters as memorials one for
you, one for Moses and one forElijah.
But even as he spoke, a brightcloud overshadowed them and a
(05:07):
voice from the cloud said thisis my beloved Son who brings me
great joy.
Listen to him.
The disciples were terrified, asyou would be, and fell face
down on the ground.
Then Jesus came over andtouched them and said get up,
don't be afraid.
And when they looked up, mosesand Elijah were gone and they
saw only Jesus.
(05:28):
As they went back down themountain, jesus commanded them
Don't tell anyone what you haveseen until the Son of man has
been raised from the dead.
Then his disciples asked himwhy do the teachers of religious
law insist that Elijah mustreturn before the Messiah comes?
Jesus replied Elijah is indeedcoming first to get everything
(05:50):
ready.
But I tell you, elijah hasalready come, but he wasn't
recognized and they chose toabuse him.
And in the same way they willalso make the Son of man suffer.
Then the disciples realizedthat he was talking about John
the Baptist.
Let's finish the chapter andwe'll come back to this, verse
14,.
At the foot of the mountain alarge crowd was waiting for him.
A man came and knelt beforeJesus and said Lord, have mercy
(06:13):
on my son.
He has seizures and suffersterribly.
He often falls into the fire orinto the water.
So I brought him to yourdisciples, but they couldn't
heal him.
And Jesus said oh, youfaithless and corrupt people.
How long must I be with you?
How long must I put up with you?
Bring the boy here to me.
Then Jesus rebuked the demon inthe boy and it left him and
(06:35):
from that moment the boy waswell.
Afterward the disciples askedJesus privately why couldn't we
cast out the demon?
Well, because you don't haveenough faith, jesus told them.
I tell you the truth if you hadenough faith, even as small as
a mustard seed, you could say tothis mountain move from here to
there, and it would move.
Nothing would be impossible.
(06:57):
After they gathered again inGalilee, jesus told them the Son
of man is going to be betrayedinto the hands of his enemies.
He will be killed, but on thethird day he will be raised from
the dead.
At this, at the disciples, andthe disciples were filled with
grief.
In other words, they're finallystarting to get it.
Verse 24, when he arrived atCapernaum, which was his
(07:18):
ministry headquarters, thecollectors of the temple tax
came to Peter and asked himdoesn't your teacher pay the
temple tax?
Well, yes, he does, peterreplied, but then he went into
the house Before Peter had achance to ask to speak.
Jesus asked him what do youthink, pete?
Do the kings pay taxes fortheir own people, or do the
people?
(07:38):
Wait a minute?
Say it again.
What do you think, peter?
Do kings tax their own peopleor people they have conquered?
The tax goes to the people theyhave conquered.
Peter replied Well then, thecitizens are free.
However, we don't want tooffend them.
So go down to the lake and throwin a line, open the mouth of
the first fish you catch and youwill find a large silver coin.
(08:01):
Take it and pay the tax for usboth.
Can you imagine that last bitright there?
How many miracles had to happenfor that.
First of all, somebody wouldhave had to have dropped a
silver coin that actually wouldpay the temple tax for both of
them in the water, then a fishwould have had to swallow it.
Then that fish was going tohave to be where Peter was going
(08:22):
to throw out that line.
Then he was going to have toactually catch it and not get
away and then open it up andfind it.
So many miracles had to happenthere.
But while there are so manythings to go into this, I'd
encourage you to go to the Biblebreakdown discussion so you can
dig into that.
I want to take just a moment totalk about that moment of
transfiguration.
The Bible says that Jesus wentup on a mountain and when he did
(08:44):
, his body began to transformand he became into a glorified
state.
His face began to shine withthe glory of God.
His clothes became as white aslight.
Then, on his left and his right, moses and Elijah are there and
they're talking and Peterfreaks out.
He doesn't know what to do.
And here's one of the manyreasons why, first of all, jesus
(09:06):
is glowing.
Okay, come on now.
Imagine you walk up to somebodyand they start glowing.
Okay, that's going to get yourattention.
But here's the other thingMoses and Elijah were about as
close to God and still be humanas you could get to the Jewish
people.
At the time, moses wasconsidered to be one of the
greatest men to ever livebecause God used him to bring
freedom to the nation of Israelout of Egypt.
(09:28):
He wrote the first five books.
They call it the books of Moses.
Amazing Elijah was thought ofas the greatest prophet to ever
live.
So you've got Moses and Elijah, you've got the greatest from the
law, the greatest from theprophets, and now Jesus is
glowing.
What would you do?
All right, I would haveprobably been James and John, I
just wouldn't have had anythingto say.
(09:49):
But Peter is like this isawesome, let's make a memorial,
we'll make a tent, one for youand one for them too.
And of course, then theheavenly father.
And he just says guys, hey, listen, this is Jesus, my son,
just listen to him.
And then you can imagine atsome point they just bow their
heads because they're terrified, and James and John are both
hitting Peter, going you idiot, why don't you say anything?
(10:11):
And then Jesus comes over andhe says okay, get up.
What in the world.
Well, the thing is is that Jesusis getting ready to enter into
the final stages of his missionand Moses and Elijah are there,
and we don't know what they weretalking about.
Maybe Moses is there and he isreminding Jesus remember that
(10:32):
you are the fulfillment of thelaw.
You are the one we've beenwaiting for.
Maybe Elijah is sitting thereand he's going.
You are the one that all theprophets have been prophesying
about.
I'm so thankful to be righthere at this moment with you.
We have no idea what they weresaying to him.
What we do know is is that thedisciples got a moment where
they were able to glimpse thekingdom of God.
(10:53):
And you know, what I love aboutthat Is that, right after that
happens, jesus comes down and hekeeps dealing with business.
He keeps dealing with stuff.
They're still hurting people.
Jesus is dealing with thehurting people.
He's healing this young boy ofthis demonic possession.
He heals him, he tells thedisciples what's coming, and
(11:15):
then he even still deals withpaying the temple tax and all
this kind of stuff.
And what I love about that isthe kingdom of heaven is not
just something that we celebrateand something we put on a shelf
and just look at how wonderfulit is.
But the kingdom of heaven ishere and now and it helps us
walk through this life with asense of joy.
Can you imagine for Peter, james and John?
(11:37):
They're still human.
They still make mistakes.
Peter is going to deny Jesus injust a few chapters but at the
same time, now that they've seena glimpse of Jesus, do you
think they doubted that Jesuscould heal that person that was
possessed of the devil?
Do you think at that moment, when Peter walked into that
house after being asked aboutthe temple tax, do you think he
(11:57):
doubted that Jesus could dosomething?
No, because when you get aglimpse of something, man, it
changes how you see things.
That's my prayer for all of usis that as we read through God's
Word, especially the Gospels, and we get a glimpse of the
goodness of God, that it changeshow we see everything else and,
instead of us getting used toit, it will help us get more and
(12:21):
more excited.
As the day approaches, I thinkthat the longer we are Christ
followers, the more excitedabout God we should be, just
like I was telling you at thevery beginning about how, after
I watched that trailer of Lordof the Rings, instead of me
going, okay, well, it's coming,I'm good now I know what to
expect.
I got more and more excited asthe day came.
(12:41):
I think the more we study God'sWord, the more excited we
should get, because it's realand it's coming.
And that was just a glimpse ofwho God is.
So, no matter what you're goingthrough today, no matter how
normal your life seems, nomatter how much you may feel
like you're just kind of in themundane of what's going on,
don't ever let the mundanenessof life fool you.
(13:02):
The King is alive, the King isfor you, and one day we're going
to get to see him in all of hisglory.
That is worth smiling about.
Today, let's pray, god.
Thank you so much for today.
Thank you, god, that you'rewith us and you're for us.
Lord, I don't know whatdifferent people may be
experiencing right now in theirlife.
What I do know is that you arefor us and that you are with us
(13:24):
in all things.
I'm thankful for you today.
I ask you, god, to give us aglimpse in our life of who you
are.
Help us to realize that you'refor us more than we can imagine,
and that will encourage us tolive for you every day.
In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen and amen.
Say it with me if you know itby now, matthew 28, verse 19
says All authority and in heavenand on earth has been given to
(13:47):
me.
Jesus says Go, therefore, andmake disciples of all nations.
That's my prayer, is that wewill become more of a disciple
and then make other disciplesevery day.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow.
For Matthew, chapter 18.
