Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, hello everybody
.
Welcome back to the BibleBreakdown Podcast with your host
, pastor Brandon, today,revelation, chapter 19.
Today's title is Jesus is theConquering Hero.
Jesus is the Conquering Hero.
I want to tell you that when wefirst started this idea of what
would it look like to gothrough the Bible one chapter at
(00:22):
a time, there were certainchapters in books of the Bible
that I was not looking forwardto Like.
For instance, I was not lookingforward to Song of Solomon.
I just wasn't all right and Iwasn't looking forward to other
things.
I was looking forward to thischapter, that one day you and I
would walk through the Bible andwe'd walk through all the
different things and we wouldget to this one.
It's one of my favoritechapters because this shows who
(00:45):
our king really is, and we haveto be careful because, yes, he
is the lamb that was slain, hewas the perfect sacrifice, he is
our savior, but he's also ourlord, our king, our general and
our conquering hero, and Icannot wait to get into that.
So, if you have your bibles, open up with me quickly to
revelation 19.
While you're doing, as always, make sure you take just a moment
(01:07):

and I hope you are too.
Make sure you comment on them.
Make sure you leave us somefeedback.
Let us know how you're engagingwith God's Word.
(01:27):
And here's a question for you,and that is this have you ever
heard the book of Revelationtalked about in this way?
I know that for many of us, welook at the book of Revelation
and it's because we've beentaught this and I'm not against
this at all we look at the bookof Revelation as something that
hasn't happened yet, and sopeople spend all this time
trying to talk about how theycan see helicopters and all
(01:48):
these different things in thebook of Revelation, and I think
it's endlessly fascinating.
But at the same time, I thinkthat it is even more fascinating
to put it in the context of thetime, and so we're going to
leave other wonderful podcaststo talk about the future and all
that good stuff, but I think itis endlessly fascinating to
remember the central message tothe early church, and that is
this that Jesus wins, jesus wins.
(02:11):
This was all about this earlychurch that was dealing with all
this different pressure comingfrom the Roman empire, as they
were being being reallychallenged to worship the
emperor as God.
And then there was all thiscoming from the Judaizers and
then other places, and reallyone of the main things was they
didn't mind that they worshipedJesus.
(02:33):
They just didn't want them toworship just Jesus.
They wanted them to bepolytheistic and to mainly
worship the emperor.
But, as you know, jesus standsalone, and so the issue with the
early church was they weresaying no, we are not going to
worship anything other thanJesus, and so they were being
persecuted.
And so the book of Revelationis a vision that John the
(02:56):
apostle had while he was inprison on the Isle of Patmos for
serving Jesus, and the overallgoal is Jesus wins.
And this is where we see, inchapter 19, the culmination of
all this.
Now, to remember, jesus hasbeen slowly taking back
everything that appeared asthough belonged to the enemy.
(03:16):
The early church is being toldyou stay faithful and watch what
I'm doing.
And then, in chapter 17, hefinally cast judgment on Rome,
this impossible looking enemy.
And then chapter 18, yesterday.
It talks about how all thepeople thought that Rome was
invincible.
But it stands nothing comparedto God.
(03:37):
And then we have chapter 19.
And here's one thing I will saythat for people who look at the
book of Revelation and there'sso many different subjective
ideas about Revelation, but whatmost people who look at it say
is whereas you know, 4 through18 is very possible.
Speaking about, you knowpresent but future events Most
(03:57):
scholars all believe that thebook of Revelation, chapter 19,
is both talking about thespiritual victory of the early
church but also the secondcoming of Christ.
And we get to the end of ourchapter.
We're going to do something wesaid we weren't going to do and
we're going to dive a little bitinto some of the end times
doctrine.
So if you're ready, chapter 19,verse one says this after this,
(04:20):
I heard what sounded like avast crowd in heaven shouting
Praise the Lord.
And remember, by the way, everytime you see capital L-O-R-D.
It is a respectful way to sayYahweh, so say it again Praise
Yahweh.
Salvation and glory and powerbelong to our God.
His judgments are true and just.
(04:41):
He has punished the greatprostitute, rome, who corrupted
the earth with her immorality.
She has avenged the murderer ofhis servants.
And again their voices rang outpraise Yahweh.
The smoke from the city ascendsforever and ever.
And here we go.
Then the 24 elders boy, they'dbe falling down again.
(05:01):
The 24 elders and the fourliving beings fell down in
worship the god who was sittingon the throne, and they cried
amen, praise yahweh.
And from the throne came avoice that said praise our god,
all his servants, all who fearhim, from least to the greatest.
Then I heard again the sound, what sounded like the shout of a
(05:22):
vast crowd, or the roar of amighty ocean waves, or the crash
of loud thunder.
Praise Yahweh, for the Lord ourGod, the Almighty reigns.
Let us be glad and rejoice andlet us give honor to him, for
the time has come for thewedding feast of the Lamb, and
his bride has prepared herself.
(05:43):
She has given the finest ofpure white linen to wear.
The fine linen represents thegood deeds of God's holy people.
And the angel said to me writethis blessed are those who are
invited to the wedding feast ofthe lamb.
And he said these are truewords that come from God.
Then I fell at his feet toworship, but he said no, no,
(06:05):
don't worship me.
I am a servant of God, justlike you and your brothers and
sisters who testify about theirfaith in Jesus.
Worship only God, For theessence of prophecy is to give a
clear witness for Jesus.
Then I saw heaven opened and awhite horse was standing there.
And the rider's name wasfateful and true, for he judges
(06:29):
fairly and wages a righteous war.
That's Jesus, verse 12.
His eyes were like a flame offire Remember Revelation 1?
And on his head were manycrowns.
In other words, he isvictorious over all.
His name was written, a namewas written on him that no one
understood except himself.
I'll explain that in a minute.
And he wore a robe dipped inblood and his title was the Word
(06:51):
of God from John 1, the Logos, verse 14,.
And the armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure
white linen, followed him onwhite horses.
From his mouth came a sharpsword to strike down the nations
and he will rule them with arod of iron and he will release
the fierce wrath of God, theAlmighty, like juice flowing
(07:11):
from a wine press.
And on his robe, at his thigh, was written the title King of
all Kings and Lord of all Lords.
Then I saw an angel standing inthe sun shouting to the
vultures flying in the sky come, gather together for a great
banquet God has prepared.
That's gross because vultures, you know, they feed on dead
bodies Verse 18,.
(07:31):
Come and eat the flesh of kingsand generals and strong
warriors whose horses are theirhorses and riders, and all
humanity, both free and slaves, small and great.
Then I saw the beast and thekings of the world and their
armies gathered together tofight against the one sitting on
the horse and his army.
And the beast was captured andwith him the false prophet who
did mighty miracles on behalf ofthe beast, and the miracles
(07:53):
that deceived all who hadaccepted the mark of the beast
and who worshipped his statue.
Both the beast and the falseprophet were thrown alive into
the fiery lake of burning sulfur.
Their entire army was killed bythe sharp sword that came from
the mouth of the one riding onthe white horse, and the
vultures all gorts themselves onthe dead bodies.
(08:14):
So gross and so awesome.
Now, I love this so much, and sowe're going to dive into this
just a little bit.
First of all, remember a lot ofthis is illusion, metaphor, and
so I want to tell you what hewas saying when he was
describing Jesus.
I want to read this again.
I actually want to pull it backup on the screen if you're
watching on the YouTubes.
Otherwise, just listen.
(08:35):
Verse 11 says and I saw heavenopen and a white horse, which
symbolized authority and purityand strength, was standing there
.
Its rider was named Faithfuland True, and he judges fairly
and wages a righteous war.
His eyes were a flame of fireand on his head were many crowns
and his name was written withno one understood but himself.
(08:58):
He wore a robe dipped in bloodand his title was the word of
God and the armies of heavenfollowed him on white horses.
Now what he's saying is he'susing a lot of metaphor, talking
about a white horse, faithfuland true.
Let's be honest Is it possiblethat when Jesus comes we're
going to talk about that in asecond Is it possible that he's
going to come riding on acreated being called a horse?
(09:19):
Is that true?
Yeah, maybe Absolutely, but thething is, he's also riding to
the early church, and what wouldhappen is is the Black Prince,
in other words, the Crown Princemany times, would lead the
armies into battle.
And so what would be happeningis is this was the guy who had
(09:40):
all the fame, who had all theprestige.
He was the one, because if Isee him going into battle, then
I have courage too, right.
And so what he is saying iswhat the people have understood.
With all the metaphors andlooking at the stuff in the Old
Testament, this is what he'ssaying.
He's saying I saw Jesusstanding at the head of an
impossible to beat army.
(10:01):
His eyes were focused and fullof authority, and on his head
was the authority of all thekings that have ever gone before
, and he stood alone by himself.
No one could equal him.
He was unique among all thingsthat had ever been, because he
(10:21):
is an uncreated being.
He is God.
He was the one who died androse again for us.
He is God, the manifestation ofall of the word of God.
That's what he was saying.
As he was saying, it wasindescribable, but I'll do the
best I can to say that was myking.
And then we see how he came.
(10:43):
And it wasn't even a fight.
It said that the enemies of Godgathered, but they had nothing.
I mean, they just completelyfell apart.
And this is where I wanna getjust a moment because I can't
help myself.
This is one of the most amazingthings that we, as Christians,
have to look forward to Now.
There are different views on howJesus comes, and I would give
(11:04):
you all of the titles for it,but it would get us too far in
the weeds.
But here's the things.
Some people say that Jesus cameagain.
He came the first time, died ona cross, rose again.
He is reigning spiritually inheaven and then one day, at the
end of time, he comes again.
It's called the second comingof Christ.
(11:24):
Then, a little less than ahundred years ago, there were
some people who came along whosaid, actually, the way I read
this, jesus will have a secondcoming, but he's not going to
let his church go through thistribulation, and so before that,
there is going to be a secretcatching away called the rapture
, and that the rapture will be aseparate event from the second
coming, seven years beforehand.
So there'll be a secretcatching away of his people.
(11:46):
There'll be seven years oftribulation, according to the
book of Daniel, and then, at thebook of Daniel, and then at the
end of it, revelation 19happens and the second coming of
Christ comes and the people whoare raptured are now the armies
of God and they walk intovictory.
There's another belief that saysthat, yes, jesus did rise again
, but he is not reigning inheaven spiritually.
(12:09):
He is reigning, yes, but at thesame time, that is not what the
millennial reign is, that?
The millennial reign we'regonna talk about it tomorrow the
millennial reign of Christ is1,000 years of peace.
That's in the future, but therapture of the church and the
second coming actually happenedat the same time, in chapter 19.
(12:31):
So, can you see, there's allthese different views, but the
one thing that all the differentmajor views of eschatology,
study of the end times, have incommon is this chapter and that
is this Jesus is coming again.
Now can I tell you, I don't knowhow he's going to come.
I don't know exactly what it'sgoing to look like.
(12:51):
Jesus himself said no one'sgoing to know the day or the
hour.
Only my Father in heaven knowsthe day or the hour.
That is his part of this plan.
That's what he's going to doand, once again, as I've also
told you in earlier chapters, Ibelieve that prophecy works in
such a way that it confirms whatChrist has done.
That prophecy works best, thatit shows us that we can trust
(13:12):
God.
And then, after it is passed, welook back and go oh, that makes
sense.
So I think that we're not goingto fully understand this part
of the book of Revelation untilafter it happens and then go oh
well, there you go.
So then, what do we do with it?
And that is this have endlessamounts of hope that Jesus is
(13:33):
our conquering hero and that oneday and I don't know when that
day is going to be I hope it isso very soon, but can I be
honest with you, not too soon, because I still have friends and
family that I want to go withme when he comes.
Now, understand the balance I'msaying here I want Jesus to
come back as soon as he wants to, but if he wants to hold off a
few more days, I'm not mad athim, because man back as soon as
(14:00):
he wants to, but if he wants tohold off a few more days, I'm
not mad at him, because, man, Igot a few people I'm still
praying for and I know you dotoo and I want them to receive
the goodness of God.
But the reality is he's coming, jesus is coming.
Jesus is coming and every eyeis going to see him on that day,
and every knee is going to bow, every tongue is going to
confess that Jesus Christ isLord.
And what's amazing is, even inthe moment as we saw all of this
(14:20):
, all of these people werelining up.
They thought that they weregoing to do something, but the
entire army was killed by thesharp sword that came from the
mouth of the one riding on thewhite horse.
In other words, jesus never hasto actually lift a weapon.
(14:40):
Jesus never fires a singlestrike.
He speaks and they are defeated.
I got no idea what he's going tosay, but it don't really matter
what he's going to say, but itdon't really matter.
Maybe he's going to say peace,be still.
That's how he quieted thestorms, and so maybe he will
(15:05):
quiet the chaos with peace, bestill.
So.
What can we learn from this inour hearts today?
Maybe the lord wants to speakto us and to say and to say
peace, be still.
Be still your worrying, bestill your fear, be still your
anxiety.
I am on my way.
So, whether I come today, whether I come in 20 years,
(15:26):
whether I come in 100 years, Iam coming and every eye will see
me.
Your job is to be faithful.
That's what the early churchwould have heard.
My king is coming.
My king has already declaredvictory.
Therefore, I can walk intoevery day with my head held high
because I am on the winningteam.
And you may not see him yet,but just wait, because my king
(15:47):
is on the way.
Let's pray together right now, god, thank you so much for today
.
Thank you, god, that your wordis trustworthy.
It is true, it is full of hope.
Jesus, you win, you make allthings new and you are coming
soon, and so we trust you.
Today, in Jesus name, we prayAmen, amen.
What God's word says inRevelation 1, verse 7, it says
(16:08):
look, he is coming in the cloudsof heaven and everyone will see
him.
My prayer is that you will longto see God more than ever.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow forRevelation, chapter 20.
