Have you ever felt that something precious was irreparably damaged, only to see it miraculously restored? That everyday experience offers just a glimpse of the cosmic renewal promised in Revelation 21. "Jesus Makes All Things New" dives deep into this transformative vision that brought extraordinary hope to the persecuted early church.

Pastor Brandon walks us through John's breathtaking revelation of the new heaven and earth, where God's dwelling place comes down to be among His people. For early Christians devastated by the temple's destruction in 70 AD, this promise of a new Jerusalem—a city of unimaginable proportions and beauty—signaled God's ultimate plan to restore what was lost and create something far greater.

The most profound aspect of this vision isn't the city's golden streets or jeweled walls, but what's conspicuously missing: a temple. No intermediary structure is needed because "the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple." This fulfills God's original Eden purpose—intimate communion with His people. Death, sorrow, crying, and pain vanish forever as Jesus declares, "Look, I am making everything new."

This revelation transforms how we face today's challenges. We can acknowledge disappointment without succumbing to discouragement, recognizing our current world isn't our final home. Like travelers anticipating return from a difficult journey, we live with hope-filled expectation that one day we'll dwell in God's direct presence, experiencing the complete restoration of all things.

Join us for this powerful exploration of Revelation 21 and discover how this ancient vision of renewal gives purpose to our present struggles and joyful anticipation for our eternal future. Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, hello everybody .
Welcome back to the BibleBreakdown Podcast with your host
, pastor Brandon, todayRevelation, chapter 21.
Today's title is Jesus MakesAll Things New.
This is going to be amazing.
It's going to be awesome.
You ever had one of thosemoments when you were wearing
your favorite outfit and you getsomething on it and you just

(00:21):
think, oh my goodness, it'sruined.
And you don't think any amountof resolve or you know the tide
pins, nothing like that, nothingis going to make it right again
.
You're just like devastated.
This was my favorite.
Now it's over.
And then you just take a chanceand you put the resolve on it,
you put the tide pin on it andit comes out in the wash and you
go, oh my goodness, it is likebrand new and you're excited.

(00:45):
It makes your whole day.
Well, that times 1 trillion willbegin to get us the idea of
what this chapter is all about, because Jesus makes all things
new, and I want to talk abouthow that would have meant so
much for the early church, especially the way he describes
it today.

(01:05):

So we're always trying to findnew ways to connect with our
community and it is a joy to beable to read through God's Word
together Well, as you have beenwith us over the past few days.

(02:09):
Now we're almost at the end.
We have today and tomorrow, andso for two more times we want
to give the disclaimer, and thatis this the book of Revelation
is one of the most divisivebooks in the entire Bible.
I would say probably the onlyone that would even come close
to it is the book of Genesis, and we're going to get there
really quickly.
But this one, it is this waybecause it's so subjective

(02:31):
Because of the way you look atit.
Some people say it was writtenonly for the people at the time.
Some people say it was writtenin that poetic genre that wasn't
meant to be taken literal.
Some people take it as this isall literal, but it's in the
future.
Well, there's wonderfularguments to be had for most of
that, but the purpose of thispodcast is to look at what would

(02:54):
it have meant to the earlychurch, because it cannot mean
to us what it did not mean tothem.
It wasn't written to us.
It was written for us, inspiredof the Holy Spirit, but it was
written to the early church andthe main message to the early
church was Jesus wins.
Remember, they wereexperiencing all of this

(03:14):
persecution and John is on theisland of Patmos.
He is right in this area and heis experiencing being a
political prisoner for the sakeof the gospel.
And he gets a revelation thathe writes to these seven
churches and he tells them hey, listen, I know you're
experiencing all of thispersecution and all of this
pressure to compromise.
I want to let you know Jesushas already won the victory.

(03:37):
We're just going to watch itunfold and, as we have seen over
the past several chapters, weget to watch how he has won that
victory and we get to watch howRome falls, which is one of the
biggest things the early churchcould have imagined.
It just would have been hardfor them to get their mind
around it.
And then in chapter 20, it'sabout how, finally, all of the

(03:59):
evil is judged and they are putinto their place of eternal
judgment.
And now something amazinghappens, and in order to
understand this, we've got toremember the Old Testament.
Remember, 68% of Revelation isfrom the Old Testament.
So John is assuming that thepeople reading this letter have
two things that they know reallywell they know their current

(04:21):
culture, they live in the RomanEmpire, but then they also know
their Old Testament, because atthis point they have in the
Roman Empire, but then they alsoknow their Old Testament,
because at this point, they havebeen around the church for a
while.
Most scholars think this waswritten in the mid-90s AD, so
therefore Christianity has beenaround for over 50 years at this
point.
So they've been reading, andthere are two things that would

(04:41):
have completely broken theirheart.
First of all, in 70 AD, thetemple was destroyed, and while
Christians no longer went to thetemple to offer sacrifices
because Jesus was the ultimatesacrifice still the temple
represented a place where peoplewould congregate to meet with
the Lord.
And so when the temple wasdestroyed in 70 AD, it would

(05:05):
have been a huge, huge blow tothe early church because of what
it represented.
Then also, they would haveknown the book of Ezekiel, and
the book of Ezekiel, at the veryend, talks about how God will
one day rebuild his temple, andit was a symbol of God coming to
rest and live with his peopleagain, and so it wasn't as much
about it being a physical temple, but it was about being with

(05:25):
his people again, and so itwasn't as much about it being a
physical temple, but it wasabout being with his people
forever.
And so, with both of thosethings in mind, jesus as he's
finishing up.
This letter inspires John towrite about the new Jerusalem,
the new world, the new heavenlytemple.
And so for the people in theearly church, they would have
went wow, jesus is gonna makeeverything new.

(05:49):
He's gonna take everything thathas been tainted and destroyed
by the enemy and he's gonna makeall things new.
So let's read about thistogether.
Revelation 21, verse 1, saysthis then I saw a new heaven and
a new earth, for the old heavenand the old earth had
disappeared and the sea was alsogone.
I saw the holy city, a newJerusalem, coming down from God

(06:13):
out of heaven, like a bridebeautifully dressed for her
husband.
I heard a loud shout from thethrone saying look, god's home
is now among his people.
He will live with them, theywill be his people.
God himself will be with them.
He will wipe every tear fromtheir eyes.
That's from Isaiah.
There will be no more death orsorrow, or crying or pain.

(06:36):
All of these things are goneforever.
And the one sitting on thethrone said Look, I am making
everything new.
And then he said to me Writethis down, for what I tell you
is trustworthy and true.
He also said it is finished.
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.

(06:57):
All who are thirsty, I willgive freely from the springs of
water of life.
All who are victorious willinherit all the blessings.
I will be their God and theywill be my children.
All the blessings.
I will be their God and theywill be my children.
The cowards, unbelievers, thecorrupt murderers, the immoral,
those who practice witchcraft, idolatrous worshipers and all

(07:18):
liars, their fate is in thefiery lake of burning sulfur,
which is the second death, andone of the seven angels who held
the seven bowls containing theseven last plays came over to me
and said Come with me, I willshow you the bride, the wife of
the lamb.
And he took me in the spirit toa great high mountain.
He showed me the holy city, jerusalem, descending out of

(07:39):
heaven from God, and it's shownwith the glory of God and
sparkled like a precious stone, like Jasper, as clear as crystal
.
And the city wall was broad andhigh, with 12 gates guarded by
12 angels, and the name of the12 tribes of Israel was written
on the gates.
And there were three gates oneach side east, north, south and
west.

(08:00):
And the wall of the city had 12foundation stones and on them
were written the names of the 12apostles of the Lamb.
The angel who talked with meheld in his hand a gold
measuring stick to measure thecity and its gates and its walls
, and when he measured it hefound that it was square as wide
as it is long.
In fact, its length and widthand height was 1,400 miles.

(08:24):
That's really big.
Then he measured the walls andfound them to be 216 feet thick,
according to the human standardused by the angel.
The wall was made of jasper thecity of pure gold is clear as
glass.
And the wall of the city wasbuilt on the foundation stones
inlaid with 12 precious stones.
The first was jasper, thesecond sapphire, the third agate

(08:48):
, the fourth emerald, the fifthonyx.
The sixth carnelian.
The seventh crystallite.
The eighth beryl.
The ninth topaz.
The tenth chrysophrase.
The eleventh jacnith.
The twelfth was amethyst.
Lots of really cool stones.
Verse 21, 12 gates were made ofpearls, each gate from a single

(09:10):
pearl, and the main street waspure gold, as clear as glass.
And I saw no temple in the city, for the Lord, god Almighty and
the Lamb are its temple.
I love that.
The city has no need for sun ormoon, for the glory of God
illuminates the city and theLamb is its light.
The nations will walk in itslight and the kings of the world

(09:32):
will enter the city in alltheir glory.
Its gates will never be closedat the end of the day, because
there is no night there, and allthe nations will bring their
glory and honor into the city.
Nothing evil will be allowed toenter, nor anyone who practices
shameful idolatry anddishonesty, but only those whose
names are written the Lamb'sbook of life.

(09:55):
Wow, I love the idea of Godsaying I am going to take
everything that the enemy didand I'm going to make it new,
everything that he did.
Because in 70 AD, when Tituscame and destroyed the temple,
he destroyed all of Jerusalem, scattered the people.
And now God is saying I'm goingto take that holy city and I'm

(10:18):
going to make it new again.
And notice how the angel saidto John.
He said come and I'm going toshow you the temple of God or
the people of God, and it's howthat we are going to live with
God.
And so what is going to happenis is God is reinstituting the
Garden of Eden, because if youremember in Genesis, chapter 3,

(10:40):
that was the hope of God is thatGod created a paradise for
people to be in and he wanted tohave fellowship with his
creation.
But then, because of sin, wewalked away from God and we were
no longer able to be in thepresence of God.
And so the whole thing, fromGenesis until right now in
chapter 21, was to get hispeople back to that place in the

(11:02):
Garden of Eden.
And so finally we're thereagain and he makes all things
new, and I love how it says thatGod will be with his people,
that he will be there, they willbe his, he will be theirs,
finally, after all this time.
So what does this mean for allof us?
That means to live inanticipation for what is to come

(11:23):
, to live with anticipation forwhat is to come, and what I love
about that is that in this life, we will have trouble.
In this life, we will havetrouble.
In this life, bad things willhappen.
We're going to lose familymembers, we're going to lose
friends.
Physically, we're going to losethings as we get older, and
some of us we were born withoutthings.

(11:44):
Just things are going to happen.
But one day we're going to seehim face to face and all things
will be made new.
The Bible says he's going towipe every tear from our eyes.
There'll be no more death, nomore sorrow, no crying, no pain.
And I love how it says that wewill be with him in the kingdom

(12:07):
of God and that he will be thelight.
There'll be no need for the sun, there'll be no need for all
those things, because he will be, and so God's presence will be
all around us is what it'ssaying, and that he will
illuminate everything.
We'll be able to be in the veryraw presence of God, yet not
consumed, because we'll be withhim.

(12:28):
And a really quick apologetic isthis also is what speaks
against the Church of Latter-daySaints, because the Church of
Latter-day Saints say that onlythe 144,000 will be able to be a
new Jerusalem and everybodyelse will be able to be or have
to stay outside of it.
But if you notice, at the veryend of verse 27, it says nothing
evil will be allowed to enter, but those whose names are

(12:50):
written the Lamb's Book of Life.
And if you remember, it wasn'tjust 144,000, but it was anybody
who claimed the name of Jesus.
And so that's me and that's youthat we get to live in the very
presence of God, and so we livewith anticipation to know one
day God is going to makeeverything new.
And so that means we getdisappointed in this world, but

(13:13):
we don't get discouraged, because this world is not our
home.
Our home is in heaven.
It reminds me of of when youever you ever like go on
vacation and you decide when yougo on vacation that you are
going to just kind of do yourthing, you're going to kind of,
um, put everything off untillater and you're going to just

(13:35):
live in the moment, right, because one day, one day, one
day, you'll deal with that whenyou get back, deal with that
when you get back.
And so we think about that, butwe think about it in opposite
that we deal with things today, but one day we don't have to
worry about that anymore.
We don't have to worry aboutdealing with sin, we don't have
to worry about dealing withdifficult to handle people,

(13:56):
don't have to deal with thephysical infirmities that we
have.
One day Jesus is going to come,he's going to make all things
new and we're going to live inhis presence forever.
Let's pray together right now, god, thank you so much for today
.
Thank you, god, for your wisdom, your kindness, lord, for the
ability to give us somethingthat we can hold on to and that

(14:18):
is to live with anticipationthat one day you're going to
make all things new.
I pray that will give usencouragement today, lord, that
when we think about some thingsthat we've lost, think about
some things that are no longerwhat they should be, and instead
of living in mourning werecognize the loss but we also
celebrate that one day, god, allthings are new.
We celebrate you today InJesus' name.

(14:39):
We pray Amen, amen, we'll saythis with me.
Revelation 1, verse 7,.
It says this look, he is comingwith the clouds of heaven and
everyone will see him.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow for thegrand finale.
Revelation, chapter 22.
