Well, hello, everybody.
Welcome back to the BibleBreakdown Podcast with your
host, Pastor Brandon.
(00:20):
Today, Romans chapter 5.
And if I could give this one atitle, it would be just the
secret of joy.
Like just bring in your ownsunshine every day because of
what God has done.
And for some of us, that's justnatural.
We we just bring our ownsunshine into every environment.
And for some of us, praise theLord, right?
We're working on it every singleday.
(00:41):
And this is the one, this iswhere the Apostle Paul really
starts to turn and really sharewith us even more the joy of
what salvation truly is.
And we're going to dive intothat in just a moment.
I can't wait to read thistogether.
But as always, if you like whatwe're doing here, make sure you
are like, sharing, andsubscribing to this on YouTube.
We are also starting to do someYouTube shorts, putting together
(01:03):
some of my favorite apologeticsquotes and different things
together.
So I hope you enjoy those.
I'm trying to mess with a littlebit of Bible trivia on there as
well.
So I hope we have some fun.
But also, if you're listening tothe podcast, first of all,
you're my favorite.
I love you so much.
And you guys are doing awesome.
You are really starting to likethose, uh, give those five-star
(01:23):
reviews.
Actually, leaving us a commentreally, really helps.
So thank you so much for doingthat.
And also thank you for going tothe Facebook group.
It is called the Bible BreakdownDiscussion.
And man, they are doing anamazing job over there.
And people are starting tocomment and different things.
And so it is really, reallycool.
And I just want to say thank youso much.
The more we dig, the more wefind.
(01:44):
And that's the goal is to createa community of people that is
just rallying around God's Word.
And speaking of that, if youwant to get your Bibles with me,
Romans chapter 5 out of the NewLiving Translation.
We're going to dive into thisand to kind of catch you up
while you're also topping offyour coffee cup and all of that.
What this is, is remember, theApostle Paul has never been to
the city of Rome.
(02:06):
He knows he's going to go, he'sgoing to end up there one day.
Turns out he's going to end upthere as a prisoner, but he's
going to get there.
And what he is doing is, is heis sending on his introductory
message, as we say.
The Bible tells us in the bookof Acts that many times what
Paul would do is he would go toa synagogue, you know, a Jewish
(02:27):
church, whenever he would gointo a new town, and he would
share the gospel.
And so that's what this is.
Is this Paul sharing the gospelwith this area?
And it's amazing to see what hewould say and how he would do
this.
And so what these were also donewhen they would write, when Paul
would write this epistle, it wasintended to be read out loud.
(02:48):
So what they would have done isthe guy who would have taken
this to the city of Rome, to thechurch in Rome, likely planted
by either Peter or Priscilla andAquila, he would go into the
middle of the group, he wouldunscroll or unravel the scroll,
and he would read it.
And so this whole thing wouldprobably have taken a little
over an hour to have read.
(03:09):
We're just breaking it down onechapter at a time.
And he is building thisfoundation of this message.
Chapter one was where he said,God made all of us, and because
of our sin we turned away fromhim.
Chapter two, he said, and God isno respecter of persons, whether
Jew or Gentile, all have fallenshort of God's glory.
Chapter three, he said that Godthen instituted the law to show
(03:33):
us what perfection looked like,to which we say thanks.
Because it was impossibly high.
There was no way we were goingto be able to meet up to that,
right?
And so then in chapter four, thegood news is, or excuse me,
chapter five, the good news is,chapter four, the good news is
that he said that's the reasonwhy we need a savior.
(03:54):
So chapter three shares with uswe need one.
Chapter four says, and thesavior is Jesus.
And so our job is like Abraham, have that believing loyalty,
that belief in God thatcompelled us to then turn toward
him.
And then when we do that, now wesee chapter five.
Chapter five is what happensafter we believe in God.
(04:16):
We confess and believe in him.
Now we have what is called bringyour own sunshine, bringing it
all.
And it reminds me of, as we getready to jump into this, I used
to know a guy named Sonny, literally, S-O-N-N-Y, and that
was the perfect name for him.
This guy was amazing.
He just smiled everywhere hewent.
And he had spent most of hislife living in Alaska.
(04:40):
And one of the things I wouldalways ask Sonny is, I was like,
Sonny, I've heard that a lot ofpeople deal with depression in
Alaska because of the times ofcontinuous light and the times
of continuous darkness.
Like, is there any truth tothat?
And he would say, Well, somepeople would, unless you could
bring your own sunshine.
And I asked Sonny one time, whywas he always so happy?
(05:02):
What was it that caused him tobring his own sunshine into
every environment?
And he basically told me what isin Romans chapter five.
So we're going to read this andthen I will tell you when we get
finished exactly what Sonny toldme.
So here we go.
You ready?
Romans chapter five, out of theNew Living Translation, says
this.
Therefore, since we have beenmade right in God's sight by
(05:23):
faith, we have peace with Godbecause of what Jesus Christ our
Lord has done for us.
Because of our faith, Christ hasbrought us into this place of
undeserved privilege where wenow stand, and we are
confidently and joyfully lookingforward to sharing God's glory.
Verse 3.
We can rejoice too when we runinto problems and trials, for we
(05:47):
know that they help us todevelop endurance.
Endurance develops strength ofcharacter.
Character strengthens ourconfident hope of salvation, and
this hope will not lead todisappointment.
For we know how dearly God lovesus, because he has given us the
Holy Spirit to fill our heartswith his love.
So pause for a second.
(06:08):
What Paul just said, because ofour faith in Christ, because we
are now known by God and He hassaved us from our sins, it
changes our perspective oneverything.
He said, Not only do we nowrealize that we've been forgiven
of our sin, but also we canrejoice when we run into
problems.
Because even our problems aren'tthe end, the problems are an
(06:31):
opportunity to experience God'sgoodness.
So he's just saying that thatidea of God has forgiven us and
God is for us is absolutely agame changer.
Verse 6 says this when weutterly, when we were utterly
helpless, Christ came at justthe right time and died for us
sinners.
Now, most people would bewilling, not would not be
(06:52):
willing to die for an uprightperson, though someone might
perhaps be willing to die for aperson who is especially good.
But God showed us his great lovefor us by sending Christ to die
for us while we were stillsinners.
And since we have been maderight with God's sight in God's
sight by the blood of Christ, hewill certainly save us from
(07:13):
God's condemnation.
For since our friendship withGod was restored by the death of
his son while we were still hisenemies, we will certainly be
saved through the life of hisson.
So now we can rejoice in ourwonderful new relationship with
God because of our Lord JesusChrist has made us friends of
God.
Now remember, that is backlooking back at chapter four,
(07:35):
when the Bible said that becauseAbraham trusted God, he believed
God, God said, That's goodenough for me, you're my friend.
And I love that idea.
Like, think about that for amoment.
You know, we tend to kind of puteverybody on a spectrum, right?
Like we put, tend to put likeMother Teresa, you know, Billy
Graham as number one.
Like these are super holypeople.
(07:56):
And we put Hitler as the lowesthuman life form.
And we try to look at that andwe go, okay, so if there's a
spectrum, where am I at on thatspectrum, right?
Like, you know, I'm closer toBilly Graham than I am Hitler.
Of course I am, you know, andthen other people are a little
lower on the list, right?
But the reality is, is that whatGod's word says is that yes,
(08:18):
Jesus died for Mother Teresa andBilly Graham, but he also died
for all the people at the bottomof the list, too.
He died for the Adolf Hitlers ofthe world.
And that he didn't die for us onour best day, he died for us on
our worst day.
And then he said, you know, Ilove how he said some people
might die for a good person, maybe not.
(08:39):
Can I tell you?
It's one thing to die for a goodperson, it would be another
thing to send my only child todie for a good person.
Not happening, right?
So it's this amazing idea ofwhat Christ has done for us.
And he's saying, now we arefriends of God.
Let's keep reading.
(08:59):
Verse 12.
When Adam sinned, sin enteredthe world.
Adam's sin brought death, sodeath spread to everyone, for
everyone sinned.
Thanks, man.
Appreciate it.
Verse 13.
Yes, people even people sinnedeven before the law was given,
but it was not counted as sinbecause there was not yet any
law to break.
(09:19):
Still, everyone died from thetime of Adam to the time of
Moses, even those who did notdisobey an explicit commandment
of God, as Adam did.
Now Adam is a symbol, arepresentation of Christ, who
was yet to come.
But there was a great differencebetween Adam's sin and God's
gracious gift.
For this for the sin of one man,Adam, brought death to many.
(09:43):
But even greater is God'swonderful grace and his gift of
forgiveness to many through thisother man, Jesus Christ.
And the result of God's graciousgift is very different from the
result of one man's sin.
For Adam's sin led tocondemnation, but God's free
gift leads to our being maderight with God, even though we
(10:03):
are guilty of many sins.
For the sin of this one man,Adam, caused death to rule over
many.
But even greater is God'swonderful grace and his gift of
righteousness, for all whoreceive it will live in triumph
over sin and death through oneman, Jesus Christ.
Yes, Adam's one sin bringscondemnation for everyone, but
(10:25):
Christ's one act ofrighteousness brings a right
relationship with God and newlife for everyone.
Because the one person's becauseone person's disobedience, let
me say that again, because oneperson disobeyed God, many
became sinners.
But because one person obeyedGod, many will be made
(10:46):
righteous.
God's law has given us, wasgiven to us so that people could
see how sinful they were.
But as people sinned more andmore, God's wonderful grace
became more abundant.
So just as sin ruled all overpeople and brought them to
death, now God's wonderful gracerules instead, giving us right
standing with God and resultingin eternal life through Christ
(11:10):
Jesus our Lord.
Now, what did he say rightthere?
He was using this example, saying that through one man all
had sinned.
And that's pretty universal tosay all have sinned and come
short of the glory of God.
But then Paul is saying, so justlike through one man, sin
entered into the world throughone man, Jesus, who was born of
(11:32):
a virgin.
He was God and man, all in one, fully God, fully man at the same
time, through this one act ofrighteousness, forgiveness can
now be given to everybody.
So as we finish up togethertoday, let's kind of wrap up in
what see what Paul is saying ashe's turning the corner from
saying that we had all sinned,God saved us, and now we have
(11:54):
the peace of God in our heart.
When I was talking to Sonny thatday, as I was saying at the
beginning, he said, Man, you gotto bring your own sunshine with
you.
And he actually told me, hesaid, that there would be many
people over the years when helived there who would move to
Alaska, stay for six months andthen leave because they just
couldn't bring their ownsunshine.
And finally I asked him, Okay, well, where does your sunshine
(12:15):
come from?
And he looked at me and he said,Well, because of Jesus.
And I was like, I mean, yeah.
I've been growing up in churchand all this stuff.
And I was like, Yeah, I mean, yeah, but what about Jesus?
And he kind of looked at mefunny and he said, Man, I'm not
going to hell.
I'm going to heaven.
And it's because of Jesus.
And he said, You know what'seven better is God can do it for
(12:39):
my wife and for my kids and formy coworkers.
So he's like, I've always gotgood news to share.
And can I tell you, I wasembarrassed because I somewhere
along the line had lost thesimple joy of knowing that I'm
not going to hell, I'm going toheaven, that I've always got
good news to share, that nomatter what I'm going through in
(13:02):
life, and no matter whatsomebody else is going through
in life, we don't have to gothrough it alone.
That Jesus is available foreverybody.
And I mean, he just told me, hesaid, that is what has kept me
through everything, through darkseasons, through difficult
seasons, all this is to realizethat I never go through it
alone.
(13:22):
I have peace with God and I'vealways got good news to share.
And that's exactly what Paul issaying.
He said, Chapter one, we allfell from grace.
Number two, it doesn't matterwho you are, nobody's perfect.
Number three, God gave us thelaw to see how far we had
fallen.
Chapter four, but it's throughChrist that we can receive
salvation when we believe inhim.
(13:44):
And then now, chapter five.
When we put our hope and trustin him, our sins are washed
away.
There's no longer the curse ofsin on us, and we have now been
called friends of God.
So what do we take away fromthis as we get ready?
What's our application pointtoday?
I think our application pointwould simply be this Is it
(14:05):
enough that God is your friend?
That He has called you Hischild.
When is the last time you satand thought about the fact that
one day, and I really hope it'sa long way away from now, but
one day this life is going to beover for me and it's going to be
over for you.
But there's no sadness attachedto that anymore.
(14:27):
There's no fear there anymore.
Because the Bible says to beabsent from the body is to be in
the presence of God, and wedon't have to worry about
judgment anymore.
But we now have the joy ofsalvation that can be our
strength so that when we passfrom this life to the next, we
meet our friend face to face forthe very first time.
(14:48):
We know him in our spirit now, then we'll see him face to face.
What would your day look liketoday if you thought about and
continually realized I no longerhave the curse of sin on my
life?
I think maybe it helped us allhave a little bit better day,
and maybe to realize we'vealways got good news to share
with somebody else.
(15:09):
Let's pray together.
Father, thank you so much foryour goodness and for your
grace.
Thank you, God, for the constantreminder that we always have
good news for ourselves and goodnews to share.
I'm thankful, God, that you arewith us and you are for us more
than we can imagine.
I pray today when bad timescome, when the enemy tries to
(15:31):
attack, when bad news tries toruin our day.
Help us to remember that you arefor us and not against us, and
that because of that, all thingsare possible.
In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen.
Amen.
Don't forget what God's Wordsays when it says in Romans 1
16, I am not ashamed of the goodnews about Christ.
Why?
Say it with me.
For it is the power of God atwork, saving everyone who
(15:56):
believes.
Let's take a few moments andthink about what it is to have
the joy of the Lord.
And I will see you here tomorrowfor Romans chapter 6.
