He's like yeah, he said I wasdoing this much on the squats.
I'm like squats.
I said he goes where are you at?
On squats, I'm like well, about20 pounds below my body weight
currently, but I'm trying to getthere right.

Speaker 1 (05:34):

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Okay, so this is not
necessarily a joke.
I think it's going to be like aspringboard into our podcast.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Oh, this is good.
I like springboards.
Good setup, right.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yeah, it is.
So it's going to be a setup, whether it actually fits or not,
okay.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Okay, so here we go.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Some people wait all
day for 5 o'clock.
Some people wait all week forFriday.
Some people wait all week forFriday.
Some people wait all summer forwinter, some people wait all
winter for summer and all oflife or happiness.
Don't let the pursuit oftomorrow diminish the joy of
(06:19):
today.
That's it today.
That's it.
So just think about it.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Some people are
always waiting for the next
thing, right, I'm glad you putthat in there.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
No, they're always
waiting for the next thing you
got.
To enjoy the moment.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Yeah, exactly right.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
And so let's just
talk about how that works.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Well, I was thinking
the same thing One time.
My boss told me to go have agood day, so I went home.
So you went home, yeah, okay.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
No, but it's like
some people are always waiting
for the next thing.
I remember growing up, Icouldn't wait to get out of
elementary school, then Icouldn't wait to get out of
junior high.
I couldn't wait to get out ofhigh school, couldn wait to get
out of elementary school, then Icouldn't wait to get out of
junior high.
I couldn't wait to get out ofhigh school, I couldn't wait to
get out of college.
It's like I didn't realize whenI was growing up that there
(07:15):
needs to be some joy in thejourney, not just the
accomplishment of the goal, andI didn't learn that.
I'd learned that too late, andI think that's one of the things
that we can learn from theScripture is that Jesus enjoyed
the journey.
He knew how it was going to end, he knew it was going to be
crucified, he knew it was goingto be resurrected, but he was
enjoying the journey.
And so we get to chapter 7.
(07:39):
I mean, yeah, chapter 7 of thebook of John, and there's just
several different stories, unlike John chapter 6, you know,
there was a small story aboutwalking on the water, but the
majority of the chapter wastalking about the feeding of the
5,000.
And the symbolism of all of thatIn John chapter 7, there are
(08:01):
several different stories kindof put together.
John chapter 7, there areseveral different stories kind
of put together.
And so if we, you know, look atthat from a leadership point of
view, sometimes we see all thesethings we have to do, you know,
we have to meet with accounting, or we have to meet with our
project manager, we have to dothis and we don't realize there
(08:24):
can be joy in that do with thisand we don't realize there can
be joy in that.
I heard something the other dayon the radio that to me is a
perfect, let's just say, segueinto John chapter 7, okay, so
this DJ was talking about goingto.
She had to go to the oncologistbecause there was some
(08:47):
potential cancer that she mightthought she had and she was
sitting there in the waitingroom and this woman who
obviously was going throughchemo okay, I think it was for
breast cancer comes up to thecounter and we've all been there
to the doctor where we sign in,and the lady behind the counter
(09:10):
said to this woman um, you haveto sign in.
And the woman who was goingthrough chemo said no, I don't
have to, I get to.
And I thought, wow, just thechange in perspective, you know,
(09:31):
was just shocking to me.
I was driving and I was like, wow, what an attitude is that?
That is amazing that, just asimple shift in attitude.
I get to do this, I don't haveto, I get to To me.
I think one of the challengesof a leader is to help change
the perspective of our people.
(09:52):
So, instead of, oh, I have togo to work, no, I get to go to
work.
So the question is, how can Ihelp people change their
perspective from the have to toget to?
And Jesus was just an amazingperson with that.
And so in John chapter 7, wetalk about there's the feast.
(10:15):
And then they were Jesus wasteaching and some people were
questioning him as authority andall this kind of stuff, and it
just was.
It could have been achallenging time for him.
He stayed on mission.
(10:36):
Right, he stayed on mission.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
You know he didn't
worry about what the public
opinion was, because that forhim he stayed on mission.
Right, he stayed on mission.
You know he didn't worry aboutwhat the public opinion was
because that was a divided.
He didn't adjust his truth tofit the expectations.
You know there was a lot ofstuff on.
You know how he should do thisand you know, and his words, you
know, provoked a lot.
You know, and that's what youwant to do is you've got to stay
(10:58):
on mission.
I think back so many times thatwhen I said when I was going to
go in business for myself, orthose times where every
entrepreneur has, where I wastrying to figure out how to
scrape two nickels where I couldactually eat I've told the
story here but we'd go to TacoBell and get a 69-cent taco or a
(11:21):
99-cent burrito back there andwe'd eat that for taste.
But then we'd live on spaghettiand mustard the whole week, me
and my roommate, when we werestarting businesses, because
there wasn't anything to eat.
We just needed a substance tomake it through.
We needed gas money and all ourpeople got paid before we, as
the owners of the company, gotpaid, and it was there.
And that's one of those things.
(11:42):
We stayed to it.
I had a lot of people say, hey,you came out of corporate.
I mean, you can go back tocorporate tomorrow and make
stupid money, right?
That's not where we're going, that's not what my mission is,
and I'm going to stay true tothis right.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Yeah, and so Jesus
stayed true, and I think what
the leader does is help peoplestay true, and part of that is
helping some not everybodychange their mindset from a have
to to a get to.
And so the question is what canyou do for your team?
Whether you have a team of one,you know, you and another
(12:16):
person, or you have a team of100, hundred or a thousand, what
can you do so they would lookforward to coming to their work?
I don't know what that is, youknow, for you.
For some people it's all aboutthe money.
Other people it's jobsatisfaction.
You know, and so is it.
Is it their equipment need tobe upgraded?
Is there?
Is their work environment need?
(12:39):
Is there too many?
Is it crowded?
Is it crowded?
And so it's like I encourageyou to just sit down with your
people and listen to them andsee what it will take for them
to enjoy coming to work more itmight be that you have fresh
coffee.
I don't know what it is, I'm nota coffee drinker but for some
people.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
That's what it is.
We've got to work on that, dr BGot to work on it, and then
it's exactly right.
Coffee would be a good one, andI know this is crazy.
This is crazy, dr B.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
What's that?
Speaker 1 (13:08):
But we're going to do
more than just one.
We're going to actually go tomaybe John 8.
Oh, John 8.
I'm ready.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
I mean, do you think
we can do more?
I think we can do more than onechapter, more than one chapter.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Yeah, more than one
chapter.
I don't know, john 8.
I mean, if you've beenlistening, in the last few shows
we've literally did one chapterper week.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
But there's so much
stuff.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Yeah, john 7 has a
lot.
But I mean there was so much in6 and 5 and 4 and all that
stuff.
It was just in 3 especially andnow we're rolling into 2.
Can we do 3?
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
No, that's not going
to happen.
We don't want to stretch itright.
Well, let's just say— We'll see.
Let's give a little backgroundin John 8.
Yes, okay, this is one of thestories that is pretty revealing
about the character and natureof Jesus.
And so there was a woman whohad been caught in adultery.
(14:14):
We don't know how all thathappened, we just know that it
happened.
Caught in adultery, we don'tknow how all that happened, we
just know that it happened.
And so the religious leadersbrought this woman to Jesus,
placed her there in their midst, and the law of Moses that
(14:40):
stated that she should be stonedto death.
And so they were asking Jesus, what do you say?
Because we see in the previouschapter that they were
questioning his authority, theywere questioning who he was, and
so he said you know what do yousay?
You know what do you say weshould do this woman.
And so let's just stop rightthere, because the thing that is
(15:04):
important to realize is thatJesus didn't just make a quick
decision.
He didn't say okay, this iswhat we need to do.
He took the time to analyze thesituation.
Now he knelt down, he wrote onthe ground, those kind of things
, but he analyzed the situation.
Now he knelt down and he wroteon the ground you know those
kind of things, but he analyzedthe situation and so I think
good leaders have take the timeto analyze.
(15:26):
Now we were talking about thisbefore the show that you know,
there's a fine line between theneed to analyze and the need for
action, and some people leanone way and some people lean
another way.
So you might have some peopleon your team that are just they
always need more data to analyzeand just more and more and more
(15:48):
they cannot.
It's very difficult for them totake action.
And other people they don't.
They just look at something andthey make instant decision and
they go into action.
So you need a balance of both inyourself, I think, first, but
also on your team, and gettingthem together so you have the
(16:09):
people that are very analytical, can think about it from all
different angles, and then thepeople who can come up with okay
, if we analyze it this way, then I see two options.
If we analyze it this way, Isee three options or four
options.
So then it's obviously manytimes the leader's job to make
the decision, but if you justsit there and analyze and
(16:31):
analyze and analyze and nevertake action.
That can really be a problem.
And if you analyze very littleand take action too quickly,
that could cause problems.
So there needs to be a balanceand Jesus is a perfect example
of this chapter right here.
He analyzed the situation, thenhe took action.
So you teach leadership allover the country.
(16:52):
Give us some insight from yourexperience on this very topic.
When you're teaching, you knowpeople in leadership and you
know analyzing and those kind ofthings.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Well, I mean, as you
were talking and you were
talking about that, I thinkthat's one of the biggest things
that I pulled out of this aswell is you know, strong leaders
protect the weak.
You know they challenge them togrow and they give them the
resources.
We talked about this a littlebit last show.
Is, you know, do you, are youthe one hindering your people?
Are you giving the resources orare you the one that's
(17:27):
hindering them from growing?
And I, I think this one of the,the ways that, uh, you look at
this is you got to balance.
There's a, there's a happymedium here.
You know, I've seen so manythings happen as far as, um,
I've had clients, I've done I doconsulting a lot with
businesses and and, uh, theleader will be like I really I'm
bringing you in because wereally need to fire this person
(17:50):
and we're going to do one lastditch effort to uh, have you do
some coaching, personal coachingand stuff, and and, um, and I'm
like you don't need me.
They're like, yes, we do, we'regetting ready to fire.
I'm like, no, here's what youdo and I'll analyze the business
and I'll do like that and taketime to look at it and I'm like
here's what I want you to do.
Instead of bringing me in, I'llcome in, but I also want you,
(18:13):
at the same time, to reorganizeand give this person a raise.
And they're like what are youtalking about?
We're getting ready to firethis person.
I'm like you need to give thisperson a reason to be invested
in your company.
Right now, he just sees himselfas a indispensable thing.
You're putting it out becauseyou know you want to fire him
(18:33):
and all this.
And I said do this, make him incharge of something.
It can be small, but give himthe authority to be in charge of
.
You want to fire him and allthis.
And I said do this, make him incharge of something.
It can be small, but give himthe authority to be in charge of
something.
And they're like, okay, crazyboy, we'll do this and they'll
do it.
And then instantly, within aweek, that whole attitude's
changed.
He wants to be part of thecompany, he wants to invest in
(18:56):
his time and his effort.
And sometimes it's that mindsetof changing somebody's mindset
just that little bit, you know, and everybody thinks, oh, we
need to come in training andcoaching and all this.
And sometimes you could be thehindrance of not giving that
person authority and just seeingthem as the one of the low
hanging fruits that you need toget rid of, instead of taking
and investing in them as aperson and changing their
(19:18):
attitude.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Yeah, and so if
you're willing to do that, you
know it can be a benefit to notjust the person but to the whole
company.
And then also, what is themessage that's shared with the
whole team?
Right, it's like, wow, thatboss really made a wise choice
and they believed in that person.
(19:40):
They gave them a second chanceor a third or fourth chance or
whatever, and the whole companyis better for it.
So that's really good.
But it takes someone likeyourself or someone to analyze
the situation, and I'm sure thatyou've had, and I've had,
people I won't share names, butI've worked with people that
they are so they have such aneed to analyze that they are
(20:05):
frozen in analytical research.
And they always need one.
You give them a deadline.
I need this by Wednesday nightbefore you leave for home.
I need this done because weneed it for next Monday.
I want to prep for next Mondayor whatever, and Wednesday comes
, they're not done.
Thursday comes, they're notdone.
I just need to look at one morething, one more thing.
(20:26):
And they're just hesitant totake action because they have to
keep analyzing.
And on the other end, you havepeople that just look at
something and make a quickdecision, and sometimes they're
right and sometimes they're justwrong, and so that's why you
need a balance of both.
And you came into that companyand you helped them look at the
(20:46):
situation, but you alsorecommended some action.
They took it and it was great.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
So Jesus is here,
he's analyzing the situation.
This woman's caught in adultery.
The religious leaders say hey, what do you recommend?
And he gets down, he writes onthe dirt and there's a big
lesson in that that I know we'vetalked about at another podcast
and so he goes yeah, whoeverhasn't sinned, you cast the
(21:16):
first stone.
And how profound is that, oh,my goodness.
One of the most profound thingsin the entire book of John.
And so what it says is theleaders dropped their stone and
walked away the elders onesfirst because they had looked at
their own life and realized youknow, I might be doing the same
(21:40):
thing or there's no way.
I'm guilty, I'm not free ofguilt, so I'm just.
I got busted, you know.
And they walked away.
And then Jesus says hey to thiswoman, where are your accusers?
And she said they're not here.
And he goes well, go and sendthem more.
So what compassion.
(22:02):
This woman obviously made amistake, and Jesus wasn't
condoning it by any means, buthe didn't condemn it.
He said hey, I'm going to giveyou a second chance.
And so the question is whenpeople make mistakes, leaders,
I've made plenty of mistakes.
I've made plenty, sure.
Speaker 1 (22:23):
I mean, I'm saying
that about you and me, of course
.
Of course I've made mistakes.
We don't have enough time todayto talk about mistakes.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
But when someone
makes mistakes, the question is
how do you address that?
Okay, and Jesus was willing toconfront the accusers.
So if someone makes a mistake, are you just going to ignore it
or are you going to actuallyconfront it?
And so you know, when you do aquarterly eval or yearly eval,
(22:53):
whatever it is, there reallyshould be no surprises with that
.
Speaker 1 (22:59):
That's exactly right.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
Because you should be
up to date on this.
Like yes, 10 months ago, Iremember this.
It's like oh, why didn't youbring it up 10 months ago?
That's a problem.
So there should be someconfrontation of issues pretty
quickly so people are not caughtoff guard when it's time for
(23:20):
their evaluation.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
Yes, I talk about
that all the time.
It's like people do theseyearly evaluations, I'm like,
and they just scramble, theycome up with what happened in
the last 30 days.
That's what they write thegoods and the bads on.
These leaders have no notes ofwhat happened the first year.
The middle of the year, theyjust, oh, I need to write
something for my evaluation.
And most evaluations are reallyjust sort of bogus and they're
(23:45):
actually demotivators to peoplebecause you know you just write
what's happened in the last 30days.
You didn't remember the bigsale that this salesperson made
in March that made the company$3 million.
You just know he hadn't soldanything in the last 30 days or
whatever.
And you're doing evaluation andit's just.
You know you got to do it moreoften than once a year, once a
(24:06):
quarter.
You need to be having weeklies,bi-weeklies.
You as a leader need to bemaking notes and analyzing
everything and be prepared forthat.
So it's actually good feedbackfor people.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
Yeah.
So I just want to.
We might need to close us thissection before we get to some
dad jokes, but I just want toshare this very thing about, you
know, confronting mistakes andhow do you handle someone that's
made a mistake.
Very famous story of Thomas JWatson senior, who was the, at
that time, the head of IBM.
Okay, the head of IBM, okay.
(24:38):
So during this was many yearsago, ibm desperately needed some
sales.
A salesman lost a very crucialcontract, potentially costing
IBM lots and lots of money.
So the salesperson immediatelywent to the CEO, thomas J Watson
(25:02):
Sr, and presented a letter ofresignation and Watson's
response without opening theletter, he asked the salesman to
explain the failure and afterthe salesman detailed the
process of his mistakes, watsonhanded the resignation letter
back to him and said he wouldnot accept the resignation
because he had just invested amillion dollars in that man's
(25:23):
education by having him learnfrom his failure.
So that is such a classic storyin leadership books about you
need to address issues.
Some people are afraid toaddress issues if they're kind
of confrontational or whatever, but Thomas J Watson Sr did that
(25:46):
very effectively and really madethat person a better person and
the company better today, eventhough it happened many decades

About the fact that you need toaddress difficult situations,
not just hope they'll, you know, correct themselves and help
(26:08):
make sure that people areaccountable for either good or
bad.
Speaker 1 (26:12):
So anyway, that's
exactly right, exactly right.
And holding you accountable forsome dad jokes.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Okay, how many do you
want?
Okay, so we've just got about45 minutes left.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
Yeah, 45 minutes left
of dad jokes, okay.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
So you know, you and
I, we don't have to get our hair
cut too often.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
No, we don't, no, we
don't.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
But what do you call
a group of men waiting to get a
haircut?
Speaker 1 (26:41):
Group Group something
.
Our barber queue, barbecue, Idon't know.
I almost want to do that one onthat one, but you know it's
there, you know how, when wewere growing up, we went to the
barbershop.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
Not always, growing
up, we went to the barbershop.
Not always, but sometimes we'dgo to the barbershop and you
just kind of wait your turnright.
So that's a barbecue If yourhouse does not.
Some houses have the numbers onthe curb.
Some houses have the numbers onthe mailbox, but if your house
doesn't have a house number onit, you should address that.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
Nice, I was just
thinking about when I was at the
park.
I was, I was, you know.
We went down the park and we'reflying kites with the kids and
stuff, and then we startedplaying Frisbee and you know,
you remember Frisbee.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
I love Frisbee.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
Well, I've got some
of these, these little Frisbees
that are like for Frisbee golf.
They really go right, otherthan the big ones and stuff.
And I was playing Frisbee andthen all of a sudden the Frisbee
kept getting bigger and biggerand bigger and I'm like what's
going on here?
Then it hit me.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
Oh, yes, oh, you know
, okay it's tough to fool dr
posey on some of these he's got.
I'll bring a frisbee next timethere you go okay, so, um uh, no
, we're not going to do that, because you just, you just said
something similar, so I'm notgoing to even what the banana
say to the boy I don't know.
(28:21):
Nothing, Bananas can't talk ohokay, oh, okay, that sounds
pretty good.
Okay, so, um, you've.
I think I've said this onebefore, but you know I'm getting
a little older than you.
So someone said you finallyreached your wonder years.
(28:43):
Yeah, I wonder where my car'sparked.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
I wonder where I left
my phone.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
I wonder where I left
my keys.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
We were talking about
that before the show, Because I
walked in the room.
I walked in the training room.
I was like, what did?
I came in here, for I went toget my iPad, but I forgot.
I'm like how is it that weremember our phone number, our
address from grade school, right?
But then you walk into a roomyou're like what was I here to
get?
Where are my car keys at?
(29:12):
I know I remember the address.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
growing up, I was in
the same house from the time I
was two to the time I was 18.
Speaker 1 (29:20):
And.
Speaker 2 (29:21):
I remember the
address, the phone number, but
it was drilled into us back thenand it's like what was my
address in college.
I can't remember.
Speaker 1 (29:29):
I just can't remember
.
Speaker 2 (29:32):

that there's going to be a new
documentary about rednecks andit's coming out pretty soon.
