Speaker 1 (00:00):
The productivity tip
of the week is time management.
One thing you can't get back inlife is time, and on this
episode, I'm here to help youthink about how you can maximize
yours.
Let's jump right in.
Welcome back to the BMAIDPodcast.
(00:31):
I'm your host, dr Jasmine Weiss, and on the BMAID podcast we
share inspiring stories of blackphysicians and physicians in
training.
Today we're going to talk allabout how to make sure you are
maximizing your time.
Imagine that you're back inyour freshman year and you have
so much to do and now you don'thave anybody to help you make
(00:53):
sure you're navigating like yourparents, who were previously
when you were in high school.
Now it's up to you to figureout how to organize your time
and stay on task.
I know from experience thatthose skills that you learned
early as a pre-med absolutelywill follow you in med school
and beyond.
Even now, as a practicing doctorand a researcher, I am always
(01:14):
thinking about how to maximizemy time, as I'm juggling so many
things from patient care toresearch.
So I want you to think aboutwhat are some things you can do
to maximize your time and tobuild up your time management
skills.
The first thing I want you tothink about is only pick three
tasks in order to make sure youaccomplish those tasks before
(01:36):
you get to your laundry list ofthings you need to do each day.
We know that it's tough being astudent.
You're juggling your schoolwork, your social life, being in
student organizations, and wewant to make sure.
Even though you might have 20things on the list, you can't do
all 20 things well every singleday.
So I want you to make sure youeither in your phone lock in the
(01:57):
top three things you want to dofor the day or use your journal
to write down what are thethree tasks you must accomplish
before you do anything else forthe day.
The next strategy I want tomake sure you think about is do
you have enough time allotted asyou create the task list that
you have?
For instance, you can't read awhole biology chapter or an
(02:20):
anatomy chapter in 30 minutes.
So don't fool yourself intothinking I can accomplish this
because I want to go off andhang out with my friends or be
social.
Be smart about really thinkingabout how long it takes you to
accomplish each task.
I still use this every singleday when I'm writing a paper and
(02:41):
if I'm writing the discussionsection or outlining something.
I can't be fooled into thinkingit's only going to take me an
hour.
By the time I really get intoit, it might take me three or
four hours.
So I have to be realistic aboutcreating the plan and allotting
the appropriate amount of time.
Last but not least, I want youto think about what always
(03:02):
happens to us when we're tryingto do something important.
We all get distracted.
Right, these phones that wehave?
They're always, always, alwayscausing distractions.
So when you're thinking aboutmanaging your time to complete
those three tasks a day, makesure you eliminate the
distractions.
Put the phone down.
I repeat, put the phone down, put it away, put it in the other
(03:25):
room until you accomplish whatyou need to accomplish.
It is so easy.
I know you do it because I doit.
Sometimes you can be scrollingand you think, oh, it's just
going to be five minutes, andyou look up in 45 minutes of
gone by.
So it's important to eliminatethose distractions as you think
about those three tasks you wantto accomplish and then you can
move on to the rest of your list.
(03:47):
I want you to remember the timemanagement is a skill that's
built over time.
With repetition, the more youfocus on creating your plan,
making sure you knock out thethree main tasks for the day,
the better and better you willget at those skills.
You'll always have curveballsthrown at you as you're trying
to make sure you focus on thethings you need to do.
(04:08):
But don't forget, if you onlypick three tasks, knock out
those tasks before anything elsecan take place, and watch how
much you remain organized andgrow and build on your successes
.
So we've talked about makingsure that you have three tasks
that you want to complete forthe day, making sure you have a
plan to complete those tasks andaligning the appropriate amount
(04:31):
of time for each task.
