Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello everyone, welcome back to the Word of the
Week on the BMET podcast.
This is a special bonus episodeand on this week's episode, our
Word of the Week isPerseverance.
So I want to share this quotewith you by my Angelo you may

(00:26):
encounter many defeats, but youmust not be defeated.
In fact, it may be necessary toencounter defeats so you can
know who you are, what you canrise from and how you can still
come out of it.
My Angelo's words sum up sovery well what perseverance is
all about.

(00:46):
Perseverance refers to ourability to pursue our goal or
passion over time, even when weencounter setbacks or obstacles.
As you may know, it requires alot of perseverance to become a
physician.
We have so many years oftraining to do, but we're not
just doing it for ourselves.
We're doing it because we lovethe patients that we take care

(01:09):
of and we love the communitiesthat we serve.
It's important to have thatstick to attitude because as you
pursue your goals, you willencounter obstacles.
I'll give you an example, evenfor this podcast, I had ideas of
pursuing a podcast for years,even as a resident, but I didn't

(01:29):
necessarily have the time toget to pursuing starting a
podcast during that time, because I was busy doing other
things.
I ended up accomplishing somegoals outside of medicine, but
that wasn't one of them.
So all these years later notthat many years hold on.
Let's not get carried away here.
A few years later, here I ambeing able to start my podcast

(01:52):
this year because it wassomething I wanted to do and was
a goal that I had for a longtime.
But it takes perseverance, orthat ability to pursue a goal
over time, even when you hitsetbacks and obstacles.
So remember, perseverance isthat stick to it attitude.
It's that no matter whathappens, no matter the ups or

(02:15):
downs, highs or lows, I'm goingto show that I can do this, no
matter how long it takes.
So perseverance helps us topursue our goals, even when they
may take time and we may runinto obstacles or challenges.
You have to remember thatperseverance, having that
quality, that stick to itattitude, is really important as

(02:38):
a physician or a physician intraining, when we think about
the struggles that our patientsare going through, the endurance
that they have to have for thechallenges they're going through
with their physical health, their mental health and even
their spiritual health.
It takes a lot of effort and alot of energy for them to
persevere, for them to overcome, for them to be able to navigate

(03:01):
their health challenges.
So for us, as their caregivers, the ones that are helping to
figure out their diagnosis wehave to have a stick to it
attitude to show we'll continueto do our best for our patients,
we'll continue to think broadlyabout what may be going on with
them.
We'll continue to support themover time, even if we don't have

(03:22):
all of the answers.
So it takes a level ofperseverance even when we engage
with our patients.
Life is all about showing thatyou can continue to move forward
even when you're havingstruggles.
It's not to say that you don'tget the support you need.
It's not to say that you don'tknow when to take breaks and

(03:43):
make sure that you balance yourlife in all the different areas
that you need to.
But life is about being able tocontinue to move forward even
when things get a little rough.
So my challenge to you is tothink through what are some ways
you've persevered in the past, what are some ways that you can
continue to show yourself I'vedone it before and I can do it

(04:07):
again and what are some waysthat when you feel like it's
really hard for you to persevere.
What are some ways you're goingto give yourself grace or find
ways in which to be supported intimes of challenge?
Life is a journey.
We're all on it together, myself included.
It's a journey bothprofessionally and personally.

(04:30):
So I just wanted to share withyou this week's Word of the Week
perseverance.
You've got this.
