Today's episode is a little different. We are going to focus on teaching males the female grooming standards, and tomorrow's episode will be the reverse. As an NCO or future NCO, it's imperative that you know the grooming standards outlined in AR 670-1.

Most people have a good grasp of the grooming standards that apply to them, but in order to instill good order and discipline and morale, you need to know the grooming standards of others as well.

Far too many female soldiers have experienced one of the leaders, or even a random stranger, scold them for being out of regs when they aren't. It degrades moral and trust, two crucial elements of the warfighting function.

On the flipside, there are good male NCOs that don't want to call out female soldiers because they don't know have a solid understanding of the regs, and want morale and trust to remain high. However, this leads to some female soldiers being out of regs, whether they even realize it or not, and that can lead to protective equipment not functioning correctly, a loss of professional image and presence, and hard feelings from other soldiers.

As a junior enlisted soldier, you can get away with saying that it doesn't apply to you. As an NCO, that is no longer excusable. It does apply to you, because it is up to you to enforce it. Don't be the guy that falsely calls people out, and don't be the guy that lets standards slip and people get hurt on the battlefield.

The only way to successfully navigate the balance between those two extremes is by knowing the regs, even the grooming standards of the opposite sex.

So listen to this podcast episode to ensure that you can effectively lead and hold the standard.
