This guide will help you memorize the 8 Operational Variables found in ADP 3-0. We will briefly go over them, a mnemonic to remember them, and the repeat them over and over so you can say them out loud and solidify them in your mind.

First, what are the operational variables? Political, economic, military, social, physical environment, infrastructure, information, time. ADP 3-0 gives us a little more detail as to why these 8 things are important.

Operational variables are those aspects of an operational environment, both military and nonmilitary, that may differ from one operational area to another and affect operations. Operational variables describe not only the military aspects of an operational environment, but also the population’s influence on it.

Now that you know what they are for, let’s memorize them. The mnemonic you can use to memorize them is P E M S P I I T.
