(00:00):
Are you start adding policy for every time Ian tots from right
about. To you.
Be quiet. Nice head, Ian.
Great. Head buddy.
Jeez, it's going to be up there.Ian, be gracious.
(00:28):
Good luck. You tee off that way, you hit
that way or this way, Straight ahead, Straight ahead.
OK, So if you cut the corner of that tree, that's where you want
to go. Or if you can take.
Your shop right around the corner, all right.
And then if you're the forward Tees are just up ahead if
(00:50):
they're using those, so perfect. All right, Mike, welcome back to
the Bogey Breakdown. It has been a while, but this
will be our, this will be 3 weekbreak that we've had since we
(01:11):
released an episode. Big, big apologies to to our
fans. Yes, I know we were talking
about this before, but everybodylooks forward to a Friday.
You're nearing the end of the work week, You're thinking about
the weekend, trying to get a good start on the lawn mowing
(01:33):
and the projects you've got going on.
You're driving into work. You go to listen to your
favorite podcast, The Boogie Breakdown, that is, and it's not
there. Yeah.
Disappointing. That's what I would, that's what
I would say that people are feeling.
And we apologize for the disappointment we.
Yeah, I know. We've been busy.
We've been busy. Mike, tell us a little bit.
(01:53):
Between. About your busyness.
Well, we, we've been doing a little globetrotting.
We were on vacation and apologies to my Illinois
friends, but we we took a extended camping trip down to
the southern part of Illinois and Illinois has some beautiful
spots. I will.
(02:13):
I will. I agree with you're being a
little girl. However, being being a Wisconsin
boy going down South to Illinois, yeah, it was really
hot down there, kind of slow. He had a great time.
A. Little bit and you get that like
weird, like sneaky bear smell almost.
(02:35):
Yeah, there's some something's weird with the Yeah bears.
But yeah, I, I think we the redeeming quality was that we
got to spend time with some, some good friends and connect
and see our kids interact with with friends and have a good
time. But we've been travelling, we've
been on the road work projects, all sorts of stuff going on.
(02:58):
So just have not been getting much.
Gold. Yeah, I know that that before
you went on vacation, you decided it would be a great idea
week before to RIP out the floorin your camper.
Redo that. How did that go?
Well, our intention was to leaveon a Thursday and we were trying
(03:20):
to make it to a friend's house and our goal was to be there by
6:00 in the evening. And I think we pulled in their
driveway close to 1:00 AM in themorning.
But the floor, the floor was finished.
It just came down to came down to the wire a little bit.
(03:41):
You know when you're, when you're packing for a vacation to
go and have fun and your, your first, your first start to the
vacation is a lot of stress and you know there's tension between
you and your partner and like, we're getting ready to have fun.
(04:03):
Kids have you. Ever seen, you know who doodad
is? Yeah, yeah.
They just not released a a clip. They're they're like me and my
wife before we get ready to go on a road trip with the kids.
And they actually had a camper hooked up.
They're like back give each other hugs.
It's it's not US versus each other.
It's US versus the kids. I feel that in my soul.
(04:29):
I feel that in my. Soul.
Have you been out on the golf course much recently?
That would be a big no. Who would have thought that a
couple of guys with with families and jobs
responsibilities would have a difficult time trying to make
time to go out and play every golf course in the state of
Wisconsin? Who would have thought that?
(04:49):
That would have been difficult. Yeah, there's.
There's only nine kids between us.
You think we? Have kids, nine kids, they got
sports. Now you have children that are
starting into the workforce, which you would think that would
make things easier, but then you'd have more running to do.
Who would have thought? Well, I do.
(05:11):
I've got both my 2 oldest now, which we're going to talk a
little bit about them because they joined us on the golf
course we're going to be doing areview on.
But they are now in the workforce.
They're learning the rigors of life.
And I don't know if it's more stressful for them or more
(05:31):
stressful for me trying to to get them to and from work.
Yeah, sure. Yeah, it it always, I think
there's always something I I'm trying to think back to the last
time that I just had like time to just relax for a full weekend
or just, you know, focus on things that I want to do or get
(05:55):
done. And I'm like, it's been a long
time. So it's it's great that we.
It's. Great that we, we get a chance
to kind of sit back and do a little recording and we got a
chance to play a golf course as well in between Kashkanan and
recording. So we'll that's a step.
(06:16):
That's right. Well, Speaking of our course
this week we got out to Kashkanog Mounds Country Club in
Fort Atkinson, WI. We're going to talk a little bit
about that, but we kind of we kind of did AI think was a
pretty fun format. And just a little bit of
background on it. My daughter and I are signed up
(06:37):
for a WSGA event coming up that's a father daughter
tournament and that tournament format is a modified alternate
shot format. So essentially we each get to
tee off and then choose which ball we want to play and it's
(07:01):
alternate shot from there, whichwhich kind of poses some
challenges. I've done this with a couple of
my kids over the years and it puts a lot of pressure on you to
hit a good shot. A A couple years ago I golfed
with my son Ian. We were in an alternate shot
format and he hit a pretty good tee shot.
(07:23):
We took his tee shot and we're on a hole that was a dog leg,
right? And I wanted to cut the corner
and go over the trees. And he's like, dad, don't just
just knock it out under the trees and then I'll get it up
and down. I'm like, no, no, I think I can
clear the trees. So I pull out my aid iron and
(07:44):
completely do not clear the trees.
Hits the trees, drops down and the look of disappointment on
his face and me and you're just like, like, OK, yeah, you're
right. You're right.
I shouldn't have taken the risk.I'm not that good of a.
Goal. It's always a nice thing to
think about. Yeah, yeah.
(08:05):
So we took, we took my 2 oldest kids.
So my my oldest daughter is now 18 and then my son just under
her, he is 15. And my daughter played on my
team and my son played with you.You got to ride around the cart
with with him and again modifiedalternate shot as a format
(08:29):
against each other and we playedpretty much straight out and my
son can hit his driver pretty far.
So he had an advantage because we let him play from the same
forward tease that my. He's also daughter was playing
from. He's a great putter.
Yes, yeah, yeah. So I think it was pretty, pretty
(08:52):
well balanced for the most part.So it was, it was good practice
and it was also fun to kind of engage.
And I, I forget that sometimes you get so caught up in like
stroke play that there's all these other forms of, of scoring
(09:12):
and golf that bring a different level of enjoyment to the game.
You know, when you if you're outplaying and you're playing a
match play or you're playing Stableford or or whatever the
format might look like, there's different ways to enjoy it and
not have that pressure. That stroke play sometimes I
(09:33):
think brings on you, you have a blow up hole, that's OK, you
move on. If it's match play you you
concede the hole and move on. And that's the that's one of the
fun things I think about golf. But we got out, we got to
explore the course a little bit.Tell me what your first initial
thoughts. Were so the the first thing is,
(09:55):
is that the course itself and the the area around it is very
pretty. There's a lot of history that is
in the course itself and and in the area with it with the
Kashkunan mountain. So if you kind of go through
their website and you read a little bit about the history of
(10:16):
the course. So it's actually a super old
course on it's turned 100 years old last year came out in 1924.
But the property and kind of thethe area around it has been
around since 19/8, not 1870, which was it was started out as
(10:39):
a hotel for, for duck hunters. So duck hunters used to be
there. Apparently that Lake Ashkenon,
which is right over there by thecourse, you can see it from a
few holes on there used to be one of the best duck hunting
areas in the United States. And so all the way up until 1990
(11:04):
or 19, sorry 901922 they startedto be they started to build the
course into a golf course. So they, they started out as a
nine hole course and that openedup in 1924 before it was
expanded into an 18 hole course. And that that area over there
(11:31):
was it was very heavily populated by the Native
Americans. So apparently on Lake Koshkanan,
they had a lot of wild rice. So the, the word Koshkanan means
actually the lake we live on. So it was a source of rice and
(11:52):
and fish and birds for the, for the Native Americans that lived
around the area. And there's actually Indian
burial mounds on the course which.
Yeah, you can see them, the effigy mounds I think is what
they call them. And just down from the course,
(12:12):
I, I saw a note that there's kind of a tour of the mounds
that you can take, which is justa self-guided trail that walks
down through there. And there's different, I believe
they're burial mounds, which is,which is pretty cool.
I live closer to the Lake Mills area and over here we have
Asteland and it's the same thingat the time that the Native
(12:35):
American tribes had built these burial mounds.
And I'm, I'm assuming it's a very similar, you know, mound
burial type system that they hadat, at Kashkanah.
Yeah, it was the the Winnebago and the Pottawatomie tribes.
And so so you get a lot of that history out there on the course
(12:57):
and you can see in a lot of the things that the course is very
old and there's a lot of historyto it.
So that was, that was awesome togo out there and play the course
when you first pull in the the driveway and stuff.
It's a little bit, it's a littlebit outdated and then the golf
(13:20):
shop wasn't, there wasn't much to the actual shop itself.
Yeah, I think the, you know, theparking area and all of that was
was small. You kind of get the sense that,
you know, it's, it's not like a big event venue I think that can
host hundreds of people, although they do events there,
(13:42):
you know, they do weddings, thatkind of stuff.
But going back to some of the history, you know, this was a
hunting duck area and from what I was reading, they essentially
as the population of ducks declined, that's when golf
started to become a thing. They put in the 1st.
They're like, oh, we can't shootthings anymore, let's just start
(14:03):
hitting some sticks with the ball.
But we talked about this, remember, we talked about can we
combine hunting and golf? Bird hunting.
Apparently not you. It's got to be one or the other.
So as the hunting interest declines and and apparently the
population at the time became more more refined.
(14:28):
If. They decide.
I wonder. I wonder if I I doubt that
there's any hunting there for ducks on Kashnan anymore.
Maybe. I'm not sure.
I mean, obviously. Around it, but.
Yeah, yeah, I, I know at least waterfowl.
I, I believe that the I've from what I've heard, populations
(14:49):
have increased. This is a complete random side
note, but if you go through the Horicon Marsh area, which I'm
sure we'll play some courses up in that geographic.
Yeah, but they have a significant history around duck
hunting and the amount of ducks that were harvested is
(15:15):
astounding. Until the eventually the DNR
came in and we're like, hey, youcan't kill every duck known.
Yeah, but yeah, I, I agree. I think when you first pull in
you, you kind of go down back Rd. and pop up into the parking
lot area and it's smaller. But generally I would say it
(15:40):
seems fairly, fairly well kept. You know, you're not pulling
into a a gravel drive with a trailer at the end of it.
And we've we've seen some of. Those it it definitely,
definitely the, the the the pro shop itself could definitely use
(16:01):
some love the the the practice facilities that they have.
They don't have a lot. So they have a putting green,
which I, I don't know if you guys know this from previous
episodes, but Mike likes to showup right before your tea time.
So I use the I use the putting green there.
(16:24):
And then their driving range is very short.
So it's, it's not an actual folddriving range.
You're only allowed to use wedges.
I think that that farthest targets like 130 yards out.
But I also, it was confusing because I asked for for a bag of
balls and they're like, oh, they're out there by the by the
practice range. I couldn't find them.
So I'm not sure where they are. I'm sure that they're, I'm sure
(16:46):
that they're there somewhere, but I thought maybe like, oh,
maybe they just put them out there, but I didn't find any.
Yeah, I, you know, I pulled in, I had both my kids and
unfortunately we had just enoughtime to hit a couple balls of
the putting green and then immediately head out.
And the 1st hole is literally right next to the putting green
(17:08):
right next to the clubhouse. And there's also kind of a cart
path that meanders right behind it.
So it all feels a little bit crowded when you're there
because you've got the, the driving range right next to the
first green, just just across the parking lot.
Then you've got the first tee box, you've got the putting
(17:30):
green. It's all kind of packed right
in. And I, it almost feels like it,
this could be true, but that thedriving range was the
afterthought. You know they were trying to
figure out a way to put something in.
I think I saw on their their website that the driving range
was added in 2019. Oh, really?
(17:51):
OK, Yeah. It, it, it was a recent, I guess
they call it a short range it, it was a recent addition.
So they have a, a project page of projects and improvements
that have been done to the course and it's on there.
It's one of their their new improvements to the course.
(18:12):
Yeah, we, we were talking about this earlier, but right on their
website they list out a project.Well, first all the, the
improvements that they've made, but then they also have a
project wish list and you can actually submit projects to the
course. And I I've, that's awesome.
Like if you are, you know, a member or even someone who's
(18:34):
just out on public play and you're like, hey, this would be
really nice or this would be an improvement that would go a long
way. You can submit it and they list
it right out. They're throwing it out there to
the universe. If they did, they're.
Letting everybody know. Yeah, we're going to do this.
This is the wish list. Yeah.
Although we were looking at the wish list for some of the things
(18:55):
we would like to see, which we'll talk a little bit about
here shortly, but your new tee boxes were not on there.
Yeah, yeah. So, and then so going through
and looking at a few of the reviews before we get into to
our breakdown here. There's a lot of positive.
So it actually has on Google, which is where I'm looking, it
(19:16):
has a pretty good rating. It's got four and a half, 4 1/2
stars out of almost 100 ratings. There's a lot of good reviews on
here. I'm going to read one of the,
the middle of the pack reviews that I, I kind of felt like was,
was pretty interesting. So he wrote out the good.
So the greens, they said, were tough and tricky and fun with a
(19:38):
lot of variety, a lot of interesting variety on the holes
with some risk and reward that the greens were in decent
condition. He's he was talking about how
the ground, there's a lot of ground on the repair, which
there was a lot of water, which is something I was going to say
on the first tee, there was a lot of, there was a lot of
(19:59):
ground on the repair, especiallyon the first tee there.
They said that the layout is a little bit clunky and that there
was. It was almost like the tee boxes
were maybe an afterthought for the longest ones.
They said there was not there was no ball washers and that.
And if you wanted to play the longest Tees, if you don't want
(20:22):
every that the the the course isvery short, that if you don't
want to play every par 4 to be 203 hundred yards, then you need
to play the longest Tees. But then they made the par
threes longer. Then he goes on to say that a
good day of golf is better than a lot of things.
Yeah. Yeah, there was no beverage part
(20:44):
and that there was an on course concession stand.
Yeah, we, I actually, I, I agreewith that.
But I they put that concession stand area in a great spot.
You pass it multiple times. As you multiple times.
Playing and I kind of liked it. You know, you have clean
(21:05):
bathrooms, you have you, you know where your destination is.
You're not out there waiting forthe beverage cart to come around
to you or any of that kind of stuff.
It I actually thought it was well, well designed.
I'm sure if they get busy out there, maybe they they have
beverage cart service too. I'm not sure.
(21:26):
About that so so the actually the, the the owner of the club
responded to that review and didsay that they do not do a, a Bev
cart that they keep that open from 8:00 to 6:00 that that
there was some on this particular day that there was
some staffing issues. So they had to close those.
But I do appreciate that the club owner went back and kind of
(21:49):
responded to everything on the review in a very kind way.
I've seen I like what a one thing I like to do is I like to
go and read reviews and then I love it when like you get like
the the reviewer, like like sleeve some sort of like bad
review and then the owner comes back and like gets all angry and
then starts like. If they're going after the
(22:12):
person that left the review withthe rest of the story.
Correct. Yeah, it does.
That's a fun thing, but I don't see that.
No, actually, I, I ran to some of the reviews and I, I will
immediately go and sort by worstreview first because I want to
know The Dirty details. But in general, there aren't a
lot of poor reviews. I, I looked at TripAdvisor, golf
(22:35):
pass, Google, they're all prettyhighly rated and, and I would
say, you know, we'll talk about our own personal ratings, but I,
I understand why I think the folks that we interacted with
were pretty friendly. The overall atmosphere did feel
(22:55):
pretty welcoming even though I think it's semi private.
Yep. Yeah, yeah.
It is a semi private course. So I in general, I, I would
definitely say, you know, it was, it was pretty good.
I, I enjoyed it. But let's talk a little bit
about the, the stats on the course itself.
I don't know if you got a chanceto go through and look at the
(23:17):
scorecard or any of that kind ofstuff, but I think it tips out
just under 6600 yards, 6591. The slope rating is 124 and the
rating to par at its longest is 71.
So it plays, I would say, fairlywell.
(23:42):
When we were out there, we played from I think right about
just under 6000 yards was the Tees that we played off of.
Yeah, because they don't have this the the most standard
colors. What was the color we played off
of? It was so so they're all they're
(24:03):
all. So you have canvas olive, you
have the member Tees, and then you have teal and slate.
OK, Yeah. So we played off the olive.
We played off the olive and thenthe kids played forward.
They played off of the teal. Yes, yeah, yeah.
So we played off of off of a 70 rating.
(24:28):
So when you are actually listening to this, you will hear
a couple just little clips from the round that we had out there
with my kids and it it's kind offun to hear some of the banter
and and stuff that's going on. Yeah, but it.
(24:50):
It was fun because it was so so it was Mike and I, each one of
us had one of his kids. So it's sibling against sibling
as me and Mike and his sibling against sibling as Mike's kids.
So there was a little bit of funbanter on on all Fronts.
Yeah, yes, yeah. So talk a little bit about the
the actual course itself, Coursecondition, fairways, greens, tea
(25:15):
boxes. What's your initial take away?
Yeah. So my initial take away was the
course is very packed in together.
So there was a lot of tea boxes right next to greens.
So especially over starting fromhole 2348 and 11, they're
(25:37):
they're all kind of actually even 17 are all kind of packed
in all at the one end. So you tee off on one end, drive
back, drive back. So there's a lot of times when
you'd be on a green or you'd be teeing off and you'd hear a
clap. I didn't do a tree or something
next to you, which that that also came from us.
(25:59):
So sorry to the people that wereout there playing if any of our
tee shots. So so I felt like that was that
was a bit interesting. Like you said, the the halfway
house that they have there isn'ta great spot.
So you can you can get there on 23481117125 and seven.
(26:20):
They all have a spot at that halfway house.
So if you were thirsty or you want food, they had decent food
there. They had a full bar.
You can stop right up there. You don't have to wait for the
cart girl to come get you. So I I did like that.
You normally the the cart girl is coming to get you.
Coming to give me a drink. Oh, OK.
All right. I don't know.
(26:41):
Yeah. Yeah, maybe they're going to
take you out. Well, so for the for the course
conditions wise, so I felt like the fairways and the greens were
fairly nice. The fairways were pretty good.
The greens were they were good. They they were small and and a
little bit tricky, which was fun.
(27:03):
They were fun to play on the teeboxes definitely could have used
some improvement. So especially in the back 9, I
felt like they got worse. There was some some pretty tall
standing grass like it had. Been mowing in a while.
And for a course of that cost, I, I definitely felt like, I
(27:24):
felt like that they they should for the, for the cost of the
course and for the area that's at the courses that are
comparable prices, I feel like you're in a little bit nicer
condition. Sure, sure.
Yeah, I would agree with that. I think on that wish list we saw
there was a comment about repairing some of the real
thighs on the tee boxes. But yeah, I I think they've got
(27:46):
some improvements to do there. The greens in general I felt
were well maintained and some ofthem are pretty tricky in that I
don't know that I would say there's a lot of undulation in
the green, but there's they're sloped.
So you might see, you know, a pretty severe slope from right
to left or front to back or, or whatever it is.
(28:09):
But yeah, overall I think the tea boxes were the primary area
of improvement and for me also. Yeah.
And, and they have a pretty early peak season that and late.
So their, their, their peak season rates are $84 with a
cart. And then if you play the
(28:32):
offseason at $70.00 with a cart,which I feel like is that's for
the weekend. If you play during the week, you
can get it for $70.00 with a cart.
But their their peak season goesfrom May 13th to September 30th,
which I feel like May is pretty early to start having your peak
(28:53):
season on most courses usually start that around June 1st.
But I would say $84. They, they, I don't remember
them having like a price cut either for the afternoon, but I
do know that they have family nights.
(29:18):
So yeah, they have family nightswhere you, there's a few nights
that they have throughout the summer where you can take your
kids out. And as long as it's a parent
playing with kids, after 5:00 PM, you play for free, which is
pretty interesting. That's awesome.
Is that just for members? No, that is for SO.
(29:39):
So they do have a an off time. So if you play after 4:00 PM, it
drops down to $46. OK, Yeah.
Yeah, but yeah, for, for me, I felt like, I felt like the the
you could tell the history was there.
There was plenty of hazards, a lot of trees, a lot of mature
trees along there. It was it was fun to play.
(30:05):
It was a fun track. It was fun playing with your
kids and and having that banter back and forth.
I got to go back and listen to alot of the audio that we talked
and it was just fun to hear thembickering back and forth and.
At one point my daughter out drove you.
She was pretty excited about that.
(30:25):
Granted she was on the forward tease and you hit a sky ball,
but. Yeah, well, anytime.
Also, my driver has been rough. Trash.
My driver has is basically in the garbage can, yeah.
Yeah, well. I but the.
I will say there are a ton of holes where there's a blind
(30:49):
shot. Either you're on the tee box and
you're trying to bend it around a corner off the tee, or Yep,
your approach shot is is blind. And that kind of adds a whole
different element to your play because you're trying to you
play, especially if you haven't played there before, you know,
if you're a guest coming in and you you're not quite sure what's
(31:11):
up, I had that. That's pretty challenging.
Yeah, specifically #7 so #7 to double dog leg left and it goes
down and back up. So, so you're going way down and
then way back up between the T So the T and the the green are
(31:34):
actually probably pretty level, but you probably have 200 feet
of elevation change in between going down and coming back up
again with a double dog leg as well.
Yeah, if I remember right, you guys took a little adventure on
that hole. That that is going to be spoiler
(31:56):
alert, that's my least favorite hole in the course.
Just there was not a lot of enjoyment to be had on that one
for me. But yeah, the So I'm looking
here at the scorecard and holes that have some sort of dog leg.
You have 357-815-1617. Yeah, there's.
(32:25):
So there there. Some of them are, some of them
are to your advantage. You know when you, I don't
remember if it's five hole 5 when you leave the concessions
or what they call the comfort station on hole 5, if you bomb
and drive and you can cut that corner to the right, you can get
(32:45):
pretty, pretty far down there. I think we all had pretty good
tee shots on that one. Yeah, that one we did.
So, you know, we only had 50-60 yards into the green, which is
kind of nice. So if you can play it well, but
if your driver is not working, you're you're going to struggle
and you this is a course where you know your your long irons
are going to get a workout. You might put your driver in the
(33:07):
bag, particularly depending on which one you're which T you're
playing from, but you could easily.
Play, yeah, there's, there's nota lot of there.
So there is not a single hole that's over that, that makes it
to 500 yards when you're playingoff the olive teeth, which is
6100. Yards.
(33:28):
Yeah, yeah, I. Think your hole.
Is hole 15, Yep, just kind of looking at the T sheet here, but
yeah, yeah. I hole number seven, 488 yards
sure four and and trust me, thathole was not that that 1 was
definitely over 500 yards the way that I played that hole and.
It's several. Maybe another 100 yards.
(33:50):
Several 100 yards. I feel like they had a lot of
they, I don't know, I think it'saround 200 acres is what the
total property is. But in general, I think they did
a good job with the layout, withthe space that they had, working
around the natural topography ofthe land and and all of that
(34:11):
kind of stuff. Yeah, yeah, it, it, it was, it
was fun. And, and like I said, there's a
lot of trees, there's a lot of, there's a lot of just, you can
just tell that the course is very old.
And that's a good, that's a goodthing.
It, it's a it's nice to be able to play and be like and, and
feel like that there's history to a course of being able to do
(34:35):
that at these courses. And, and 100 years for a golf
course is awesome. I mean, here in Wisconsin, I was
actually looking up some of the oldest courses in Wisconsin.
And Koskunen Mountains is one ofthe oldest courses in Wisconsin.
Yep. Yeah, it's definitely, it's in
within the top 10 of the oldest courses here in Wisconsin.
Yeah. Well, it's kind of fun if you're
part of that. You know, let's say you're a
(34:55):
member out there, you play therefairly regularly.
You get to see that course evolve over time, and it's kind
of a cool, kind of a cool thing to see for sure.
Yeah, it it definitely isn't or or.
I guess it depends on if you like change.
(35:15):
Some people just preferred things to stay exactly the same.
Yeah, if they can keep it as is for a long time and keep
everybody else out, I'm sure they would do it, that is for
sure. Well, talk about your favorite
hole, least favorite hole. You've you've already said 7 is
up there for least favorite. Yeah, yeah, 7 did not bring me
(35:39):
much joy. 7/7 was it, it, it was, it's the double dog leg
left. I, I, I'm a fader of the ball
and with my driver it's, it's a very exaggerated slice.
Well, at 1:00. At one point my daughter and I
(35:59):
were waiting for you guys to. Come out of the.
Trees come out of the trees, yeah.
Yeah, it was. Comments.
But we were just, we were just patient, patiently and we were
in the trees ourselves, but thankfully not as not as deep
into the woods. Yeah, it it was, it was a little
(36:19):
bit of a disaster. So so I wasn't a huge fan of
seven that one. The rest of them were.
I felt like 1 was kind of boring.
You know, you're teeing off in front of the clubhouse there.
It's just a straight 300 three 25, 325.
(36:42):
There's not a lot there. The green is a little bit
elevated, but not much and like I said, it was a little bit
under repair right. So so I didn't really, really
like that one a ton if for for afavorite hole 8 was 8 was pretty
fun. So 8 is a par four that you're
(37:07):
driving down the hill. And then so the green actually
is has two surfaces so that it'sa tiered green and it's a pretty
drastic slope from the top greento the bottom part of the green.
So luckily our our flag was at the bottom and there's a pond
down there and there's a clip here.
(37:29):
I'll play that clip. Did you see the turtle?
I got nice pots. I don't mind if you tell me
about a turtle, but you can't talk in other people when
they're trying to putt. I saw that snapper.
No, the turtle. Is there another one but down by
the pond. Oh no, I was holding it up for
you to see, but you just like, Oh, I didn't realize that's
(37:49):
what. Doesn't even care about me of of
Ian and enjoying doing a little bit exploring in the pond there
may have may. Have found a turtle.
Yep, Yep, found a little turtle, but I felt like that was a lot
of fun that that hole was. And then I also really liked 17.
(38:12):
So 17 is a dog leg, right? It's a very much a risk, a
reward shot. You can drive it.
Basically, if you can cut the corner there, you can be on the
green. I I came a little bit short on
there, but Ian actually drove a fantastic shot there.
(38:33):
Yeah, cut the corner nicely. Cut the corner.
Very well, yeah. That one is a fun hole and you
can if, if you can hit a decent T-ball that has some height on
it, you can cut the corner, get over those trees no problem like
in the fairway and, and give yourself a good, good.
And yeah, I would, I would agreewith that.
(38:53):
I really enjoyed hole #18 as a finishing hole.
I, I think the hole itself is uphill from the tee box up to
the green. It's not, you know, the most
interesting golf hole. But when you get up to the top
on to the green and you look down, you can see Lake Koshkonog
(39:14):
it, it's, it's beautiful. It's really cool.
You've got the. Yeah, check out the the bogey
breakdown socials. I got some photos of that.
You got some photos of that sweet, awesome view.
So that's got to be the signature hole.
I also think that hole there's ahole #10 is a par 3 uphill.
(39:36):
That was kind of fun. And you're just coming off hole
9, which kind of beat me up a little bit.
So maybe. That's like.
Yeah, hole 17 was fun. I there was a, there's a couple
holes that felt like you got into the doldrums a little bit,
I would say on the back nine that wasn't overly inspiring or
(39:58):
interesting. But in general, I I think they
did a pretty good job. Yeah, yeah, I, I actually
wasn't, I, I was not a fan of 10.
That par 3 it's you're, you're basically elevated tee box going
(40:20):
on to a valley elevated green. But yeah, I, I, I felt like that
there was so 18 that was fun. That the one thing I do want to
say about that, the fairway is very narrow and there's a lot of
trees that are growing up along, especially on the front half of
that that fairway there. And yeah, it, it feels much
(40:45):
longer than what it is. So Ian actually smoked to drive
on 18. I don't know if you remember
that all the way basically halfway up that hill.
So unless it was a very short approach shot, but I thought
because you're driving up the hill, down the hill in the back
up again, I I felt like that that was a very long hole, but
it's it's really not 444 yard par 5, but it it, it definitely
(41:12):
it's very narrow. It opens up.
You get up to the top of the hill.
There's actually some of the burial mounds off to the left
hand side of that green over there on 18.
That what? Yeah, that.
It's a nice finishing hole there.
Yeah, yeah. So how would you rate Goshkin
amounts? I, I don't, I don't want to, to,
(41:38):
I'm giving this a, a rating based on the price.
So I think that this is a bogey for me.
If it was, I, I feel like this is more of probably like, of
course you'd want. I, I feel happy about paying
like 50 or 60 bucks to play there.
At that almost $90.00 price point, I can play a better
(41:58):
course. I I think that that that course
is probably a Bowie for me. Yeah, yeah, I.
And and there's nothing against the course.
Yeah. So you know, but it just, I feel
like it's just priced too high. I think that's the pros and cons
of maybe dynamic pricing or maybe it being semi private
where you're not relying on public play and maybe you're
(42:20):
trying to discourage public playa little bit.
And if you're going to have it, it's going to be at a certain
price point. Yeah, at that price point, I
agree. I think, you know, 50-60 dollars
for around there when it comes to the the quality of the golf
carts, the amenities on the course that that kind of I I
(42:41):
wouldn't say is, is it's not poor quality necessarily, but I
would expect it to be a little bit lower on the price chain
also. So I'm going to agree with you
on that rating. However, one thing I will say
that we did enjoy is we stopped by the clubhouse afterwards and
enjoyed some some cheese curds and some old fashions and let's.
(43:05):
Check out the Bogey breakdown social so those photos are on
there as well. Well, as a cheese curd
self-proclaimed cheese curd aficionado, they did a pretty
good job. I I definitely feel like that
elevated the experience a littlebit.
Yeah, their, their cheese curds and their beverages were good.
(43:26):
I felt like the service at the course was also very good.
Everybody we talked to was friendly.
The lady at the the halfway house, there she was, she was
very nice. Mixed up the drinks good out
there. The I thought the Brandy old
fashioned was a muddle. It was good.
And probably there was there wasa Marshall that drove around
(43:48):
quite frequently and he he wouldcome up and he chit chatted with
us and told us about 18 and how much we were going to like to
view from there. I think we talked to him again
on 15 and very friendly staff out there, so.
Yeah. They, yeah, I think that if the
price point was a little bit better, this could easily be a
par or, or if you know, if they the, if the tee boxes were
(44:10):
nicer, things like that. There's a there's there's things
that they could do to to to bring that up to A, to a par for
sure with the history of the course, you know, it's.
It's kind of cool, yeah. It's it's it is cool, yeah.
So talk about the match. Do you do you want to reveal the
the winner of that golf? Match.
(44:31):
Do you I? I don't know.
Do you saw the scorecard? I took I took a picture of the
scorecard. All right.
Yeah. So the so my scorecard talk a
little bit about the scorecard here for the for the match.
The scorecard points to a clear winner.
And yes it does. That clear winner is myself and
(44:52):
my daughter. Yeah, yeah, it was.
You guys pulled away in the back9 after a hole seven, I think.
Yeah, after a hole 7, we tied itup there.
Ian and I had a pretty good leadgoing into hole 7.
We lost that lead and then we just kind of kind of fell apart
(45:14):
after that. There there's there's an old
book that is called Pilgrim's Progress and there's a there's a
piece in that book called the Slough of Despond where where
the guys walking through a terrible area and you just can't
get out. I would liken whole 7 to your
Slough of Despond here. Yeah, it, it, it definitely it
(45:39):
did eight. I think we beat you guys on 8
after that. And then I, I feel like we never
just we just never kind of recovered from hole 7 there,
which, yeah, we it it, it was fun.
It it was still fun. It was good thing.
For, that's for. Sure, we we were never really
(46:01):
out of it, but I think we. I'm going to count that as a win
in in my book because I need more wins, yeah.
Yeah, you do need more wins. And I know you're going to need
more wins after our next review, not to give in too much details.
(46:22):
Tell us about that. Where?
Where are we going next? Yeah.
So for for next of course we're going to is going to be Lake
Windsor Country Club over there in De Forest, WI, I think it's
De Forest or is it Windsor? It, it is, right?
It's just South of Deforest, buttechnically that's in Windsor,
(46:42):
yeah. Yeah.
So we will be, we'll be doing that review for you guys next
week. And yeah, I think this has been
a pretty good, pretty good Bowiebreakdown.
