Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey everybody, welcome to another edition of
the Boone Show on MyPulse Radio.
I'm John Boone, the boss.
Lady's here, holly, say hi.
Sorry, I didn't have it we havea million guests in the studio
which is a good thing, Exactlyso I apologize.
But thanks for saying hi.
We've got all three principalsof Anderson School, district 1
high schools here tonight Shouldbe fun Robbie Roach from

(00:21):
Palmetto, adam Lanford fromPowdersville and Kyle Whitfield
from Wren, and we'll get to themshortly, but first we kick off
the show with our aerospacepeople because they've been
doing well.
Holly, you're going to be proudof these people.
They're going to nationals andtheir teacher, james Davis, is

(00:45):
here.
And James, go ahead andintroduce some folks to us and
tell us how you'll be competing.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
Okay, sure, last year we only had four members, this
year we had seven and we didhave two teams that we combined
our resources to have one.
But we have Brayden Hall asteam captain from Honeyapath and
Andrew Neff, and there's NoraBoswinkel she's not here and
Kursh Patel and Kush Patel andAudrey Reese and Samuel Reese.
Those are our team members.

(01:11):
Basically, we had to build Isay we, I couldn't touch the
rocket at all, but they had todesign and build their own
rocket that could go 820 feet, exactly carrying a hen's egg,
and of course it couldn't break.
It had to go up and be backdown on the ground between 43
and 46 seconds and we testedprobably 30 different launches.
But by the time the judge cameout, we get three chances.

(01:34):
We get the best two out ofthree, and one of them was
actually 821 feet, so just onefoot off, and the time was
within a tenth of a second.
So with that score, zero isperfect, but 22 is what we got.
The cutoff for the top 100teams was around 33, so we had
22.
So we're well in there.
I don't know exactly how closein there, but now we're invited

(01:54):
to Nationals, which is on May18th, but more information can
be found on rocketcontestorg andour big sponsors, of course, is
the ACTC and Champion Aerospaceout of Pickens also sponsored
us this year.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
So, guys, step up to the mic.
Tell us about how you preparefor this competition and just
what it's like.
State your name.

Speaker 5 (02:16):
This is Braden team captain, Pretty much how we
prepare for this year.
We made a lot of mistakes overthe last year.
So we pretty much had the ideado not replicate any of those
that we already made.
Our final rocket last year, which our current rocket has a

(02:37):
pretty similar design, workedalmost flawlessly.
So we kind of had thephilosophy kind of make it
similar, don't make it exact.
Follow the same procedures wehad done before.
Go out and test as much as wecan go ahead and try to get our
qualification as close aspossible before the final

(03:00):
qualifying date.
Just pretty much be readybefore everyone else.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Well, that seemed to work out.
So how long does it take to,you know, make all these
adjustments to get it even closeto what you're supposed to have
for competition?

Speaker 5 (03:21):
To make the rocket alone.
We probably build that abouttwo days if we really put time
to it.
But to get the adjustmentsusually it takes us between to
get it honed in about two, threeweeks because we were usually
launching about only once a week, only once a week.

(03:47):
So we had to.
While we launched at a separateRC field.
At the field we would have todo some micro adjustments and we
have to wait to get back to dosome major adjustments.
So about it took two to threeweeks to hone in completely on
our qualification.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Cool, anybody else?
You got questions here.
Principals, all of theinterested in this.
They're shooting rockets.
For goodness sakes, air weather, all that stuff has to be taken
into account.

Speaker 5 (04:04):
That's going to be taken into the house could be
about yeah, um, yeah, dependingon the air, we can usually say
if the air is thin, it's forsome reason going to go lower,
um, because it doesn't have asmuch air to kind of push it up.
Uh, depending on how cold orhow hot it is, if it's hotter,
it's going to take longer tocome down with the parachute.
It's colder, it's usually goingto come down just a hair

(04:25):
quicker.
So you have to factoreverything weather, elevation,
even daylight.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
Wow, that's interesting.
And where's the Nationals at?

Speaker 4 (04:35):
It is 40 miles east of Washington.
It's called Plains Virginia.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Okay, yeah, and that's coming up when.

Speaker 5 (04:43):
Second week of May, may 18th.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
May 18th.
May 18th.
Okay, yeah, All right cool.

Speaker 5 (04:51):
Will you be flying your rocket up there?
It?

Speaker 8 (04:53):
feels big enough.
Yeah, okay, are we going toexcuse the absence.

Speaker 7 (04:58):
Mr Whitfield, will you be excusing their absences
If they win?
Yeah, only if you win, yeah, otherwise unexcused Only if you
win.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
Yeah, otherwise no excuse.
So if you do now, I knowthere's a world thing you can go
to after this Do you have towin-win or do you have to place,
or whatever what'squalifications to get to go to
London?

Speaker 4 (05:18):
My understanding is the first place team goes to
London.
Okay, there are 11 other prizesthat we're eligible for in a
first through 10th, and sincewe're also the first time
finalist, where there's a,there's another prize for the
best first time finalist.
And keep in mind you said when, but when we get up there you
don't get any more practices, you actually get.
You get one shot out of ahundred teams and you gotta be

(05:41):
in the top 25.
Wow, so that's one shot.
And that means if the wind'sblowing harder when you launch,
when your predecessors orwhatever are, then it's going to
be a little bit tougher.
So I'm hedging my bets a littlebit just in case we have issues
.
And last year, I think 20% ofthe teams, because of the winds
or whatever, got disqualified ontheir launches.
So, number one, I'm hoping thatwe don't get disqualified

(06:04):
because we get that one launchto get into the top 25.
And after that, if we're in thetop 25, that would be pretty
awesome.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
That would be.
That's awesome.
Well, thanks guys.
Best of luck to you.
I appreciate you coming by andtelling us what you're doing
here on the radio station andwe'll all be rooting for you.
No pressure at all, I mean, just one launch and you know for
all the marbles.
But good luck, Thank you.
All right, that's our aerospaceteam.
We want to thank our SpaceForce.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
Champion Aerospace for the donation to help these
students go on.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
Yes, help them go on this trip.
Hopefully they get to go toLondon.
That'd be really cool.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Yes, we get to go to London.
Yeah, that's not me but Hollymanages to get on all these
trips.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Some of them Perks of the job, yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Some of them.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Hardly ever see her around here.
She's always off to some othercountry, somewhere celebrating.
Yeah, never goes on our trips, though she's yet to go on a
media broadcast.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
I will next year.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
We've won nationals three times.
She hasn't been there.

Speaker 6 (07:05):
Congratulations to you.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
Well, thank you.
We didn't win this year, thoughLast year, but you know, all
right, let's shift gears, let'smove on to these high schools
here, and let's start withPalmetto.
This is in.
No, you know, there's no orderhere, guys, it's just.

Speaker 7 (07:24):
It feels like there is, but we'll go with that they
understand, we know Whitfield'slast.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
But, robbie, tell us about your year at Palmetto.
Just brag on your school alittle bit.
What's going on and what'sgoing to be coming up next year?

Speaker 6 (07:40):
It's been a good year .
We feel like we've made a lotof progress with the Solution
Tree, you know, professionallearning communities process.
We got recognized as a modelschool.
That's a big deal for us,Something we've been working on
for a while.
We also a couple of us got, Iguess, accepted to present at

(08:04):
SREB in Nashville, so that'salways a fun time.
Enjoy going to Nashville, andmyself and Dr Jones and Mr
Imparati will be presentingthere.
Talking about collaborativeteams.
Yeah, Dr Will Jones, that iscorrect.
He has completed his work forthe PhD.

Speaker 7 (08:23):
That's not surprising but impressive.

Speaker 6 (08:26):
He is an impressive guy, all right.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
What else is going on ?

Speaker 6 (08:31):
Well, other than that , I mean we've had limited
success athletically.
You know, we did win the statein cheerleading, but otherwise
we've.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
That's not nice.
That's not nice.
Well, I mean.

Speaker 6 (08:45):
I'm.
It's not nice, that's not nice.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Well, I mean, I'm just being real, that's right.

Speaker 6 (08:49):
You know, these guys are pretty competitive too.
So you know, we try to.
That's why you're sittingbetween them, yeah we try to
hang with them and in some caseswe don't.
So you know I put the pressureon the coaches.
Let's pick it up.
We need to hang with these guys.

Speaker 1 (09:01):
A little bit of a different region next year to
play in.
Of course Powdersville will bein the same.

Speaker 6 (09:10):
Powdersville are going to be in there with the
private schools.
Powdersville is kind of like aprivate school anyway.

Speaker 7 (09:17):
Here we go.

Speaker 6 (09:19):
That'll work for them , but it's going to be a little
tougher for us.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
But seriously, though , this whole District 1 is just
exploding everywhere.
I mean Rens and 4A Powers ofFire right behind, but Palmetto
is really growing too.
I mean all you have to do isdrive around and see where
they're shoehorning all thesehouses around here, to know that
Palmetto is going to be runningout of room soon too.

Speaker 6 (09:41):
Yeah, there's definitely a lot of growth're.
We're out of room when it comesto classrooms.
Um, yeah, you know, looking atnext year's schedule and
everything we'll, we'll bemoving some people around, I'll
study how I may be, uh, in adifferent room every, every
period, and that kind of thingare you dropping like?

Speaker 7 (09:58):
is this news to people like?
This is breaking news.
No, it's not breaking news wealways like breaking news
we're're going to be movingteachers, by the way, that's
always fun to do randomly.

Speaker 6 (10:08):
We're not doing that.
We just happen to have some newteachers we're adding, so got
to find places for them.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
Yeah, how full is the middle school over there, by
the way?
Well, they just built a brandnew one, I know.
That's why I was wondering howfull it is already, I think
there's openings.

Speaker 10 (10:24):
I'm pretty sure.

Speaker 6 (10:25):
Yeah, I don't think all their classrooms are full.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
Yeah, all right, okay , what else?
Do we leave out here.

Speaker 6 (10:36):
Anything going on building-wise over there.
Well, we are in the process ofkind of updating some locker
rooms, weight room stuff, youknow, again to compete with the
two highly competitive highschools that are in our district
.
We've got to kick our game up alittle bit.
We've got that under, I guess, the planning stages right now

(10:59):
Probably won't start working onit until right after football
season, because we'll need allthat space, you know, to get us
through football season Right.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
All right, holly, you got anything to add here?

Speaker 2 (11:08):
No, you guys finished up your ball field right.
You had baseball that wasfinished this year.
We did, we did Two-year project.
Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 6 (11:17):
It took a long time, but the baseball field turned
out really good and I don't know, if you follow Facebook, but I
mean, apparently it's a wholelot nicer than Wren's.
But you know, I think Kyle's inthe works of you know getting
things up to par over there withWren baseball now.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
Yeah, he needs to do that, but it is.
It is a nice looking field.

Speaker 10 (11:39):
Nice high fence out there.
Yeah, it turned out good fenceout there.

Speaker 6 (11:51):
Yeah, it turned out good.
Let me put it this way wedidn't exceed um 18 months past
any of the deadlines.
Oh okay, that's good, it'salways a silver lining yeah, all
right.

Speaker 1 (11:55):
Yeah, so good things happening at uh palmetto high
school.
You have any uh new hirescoming in, uh sports wise or
anything that we can lookforward to next year, because I
know these other guys have some.

Speaker 6 (12:07):
Well, I mean, you know, we have our football staff
coming into the second year, sowe're pretty excited about that
.
We have some fantastic peopleon staff for football.
Thanks to Powdersville High fortraining one of them very well,
coach Ryan Norton's been anamazing addition to our staff,
our teaching staff and ourcoaching staff, so we're pretty

(12:29):
excited to see where that goesas it continues to grow.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
And I will tell you this when I was over there for a
few games in the fall it seemsthat he's interjecting a little
more excitement.
There was more excitement overthere than there normally was.
A lot more people at the gamesgetting involved and really
looking forward to kind of likea new era kind of thing going
over there at Palmetto.

Speaker 6 (12:50):
Yeah, we definitely have that enthusiasm going in
our favor.
Other than that, we reallyhaven't made any changes
coaching-wise.
Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:57):
Okay, well, we're going to take a quick time out.
When we come back we'll talkabout that.
Private school Powdersville.

Speaker 11 (13:06):

Speaker 1 (15:15):
Welcome back to the Boone Show on MyPulse Radio.
We're here with all threeAnderson School District 1
principals.
Just heard from Robbie Roachfrom Palmetto.
We'll hear from Kyle Whitfieldin just a few.

Speaker 7 (15:25):
Right now let's talk to the uh state basketball
champion principal this year twoyears ago we didn't win the
region, but we were able to winstate.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
That's pretty good for us that's what you that's
what you need to do.
You got to win the big one Iknow two out of three.
Well, you got the one that theywere ripped off in that one
game anyway.

Speaker 7 (15:43):
I have no comment on anything that occurred to any
place.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
That was boy Wren has got the refs in their pocket.

Speaker 8 (15:50):
We don't cry at Wren High School.

Speaker 3 (15:54):
No comment regarding that 6.6 seconds.

Speaker 7 (15:57):
Yeah, the actual laps time.

Speaker 1 (15:59):
I will say this though, and we'll get to Wren in
a second but your kids really,as far as fans go at games, they
bring it.
I mean, ren's student sectionbrings it at games.
We've got to get that better.
Powder field, dr Lance.

Speaker 7 (16:13):
Yeah, I mean being a former member of the Ren High
School student section someyears ago.
It's an established traditionthat they do really well with.

Speaker 1 (16:23):
And.

Speaker 7 (16:24):
Patterson's working to establish our own right now.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
Yeah, because it was an interesting season as we just
start with basketball, becausewe cover most of the home games
and just to see that it justreally kind of evolved.
And it was very similar toRen's season before that, where
it was like it wasn't a wholelot of excitement, thought it
would be a good team and thenjust kept winning, and just kept
winning, just kept winning andthen all of a sudden, boom, you

(16:49):
got a state championship.
Obviously, that had to make youreally proud.

Speaker 7 (16:51):
Absolutely 100%.
It was a great experience.
You know it's my third year oncampus and we've been the
bridesmaid a few times in sportsand everything We've been, you
know, in our band programs, finished up second in the state
a couple of years.
So we're like, okay, let's getover that hurdle and finally
we're able to get over that humpwith our basketball teams.
That was really exciting.

Speaker 1 (17:11):
Yeah, and the year before, of course, football was
right there too, that's right.
But now, with this big change, this 4A, 3a change, you're still
going to play Wren, but it'snot the huge rivalry that it has
been.

Speaker 7 (17:25):
Yeah, I'm sure it'll still be a pretty good rivalry.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
Well, I mean, it's not for the region.

Speaker 7 (17:28):
Right, so it's not yeah.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
But as far as the backyard little brother things,
that everybody brings up thathas become such a great rivalry.
And I say that because the kidsin the school you know they're
talking about it all the time.
That's right, and I say thatbecause the kids in the school
you know they're talking aboutit all the time.
It's not just out on the field,it's like they love the
competition and the back andforth going on there.
So tell us, besides basketball, what all has been happening at

(17:54):
Poundersville this year.

Speaker 7 (17:54):
Yeah, it's been a great year.
I mean, we were able to reallywork through a lot of fun things
.
We didn't get the model schoolaward.
We got sent back to try again,so we're going to do that.
We're pretty excited with whereall our scores landed.
I'm drawing a complete blankright now, mr Boone, forgive me.
When you get old, like me,you'll understand.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
I know I'm much older than you.

Speaker 7 (18:17):
But we had all that going on.
The fall was a great fall, alot of good work.
Our kids are really gettinginto our flex time and our win
time and what's going on.
We had two incredible showsFrom our fine arts department
this year.
First, really getting thatreestablished, two Fall and
spring shows.
They're both incredible.
Chorus was out of Superior withDistinction Band, superior with

(18:40):
Distinction Three regionchampionships so far in the
spring, hoping for a fourth andmaybe a fifth tonight.
So we'll be hosting From March1.
Until last week we hosted 58events at the high school Across
all the things that happened.
Just a lot of good things Goingon and just really ready to

(19:01):
take that next step.
As you mentioned, 4a Wren's gone, which is really ready to take
that next step.
You know, as, like youmentioned, 4a, you know Wren's
gone, which is really upsettingto us.
We hate.
You know, whenever theHurricanes come to town, you're
really excited to play and themand the Daniel Lyons kind of
garner a little extra attention.
But, you know, excited to takethis next step and run into, you
know, some new schools andcurrently expanding our stadium.

(19:26):
So, that's been a fun projecttrying to add a few more seats.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
I heard that's up to 1,000 seats, right?
Is it like 600 on one side, 400on the other?
No, it's more than that.

Speaker 7 (19:35):
I think we're adding about 800 on the home side and
about 600 on the wayside.

Speaker 8 (19:39):
It's about 1,400 and change Just slightly smaller
than Michigan.
Yeah, slightly, it's a bighouse.

Speaker 7 (19:43):
Basically if you took Clemson and Carolina and
doubled them it would basicallybe what we'd be able to see at
any given event.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
So it's pretty exciting.

Speaker 7 (19:51):
So, yeah, just really trying to get that to a better
spot.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
And realistically the stadium is not that old.

Speaker 7 (19:59):
No, it's not Well, I mean, if you think about it, the
original school was built for800, and we're in year 13 at
1100.
So right on pace, right on pace, so it was built, you know for
us, and y'all had an addition aswell.
We did.
We had a wing added that openedin 2020.
So 10 years in, we had to add anew wing, and then we just
completed an outfit of our oldweight room and made it a

(20:21):
wrestling room.
So now our wrestling team has adedicated space, which we're
really excited about.
Big kudos to the PowerShellHigh School Athletic Booster
Club stepping up to meet us toreally get that project rolling.
So I'm really excited where thatis.
It opens up our armory for morejust direct training, because
the wrestling team's notpracticing in there.
And they've got their own spaceand I tell the coach this all

(20:43):
the time I love them, butthey're kind of dirty and kind
of smelly.
Them having just their ownspace is really exciting for us
as a school.
So they've got a dedicatedspace and I think that's kind of
pushed the other two schools tokind of do something about that
.
So I want to tell them you'rewelcome for that.
So it.
So I want to tell them you'rewelcome for that, but it's
definitely been a good yearWe've got.
You know, there's not a betterschool in the state of South

(21:05):
Carolina than the Patterson HighSchool.

Speaker 1 (21:06):
There you go.

Speaker 7 (21:07):
There it is.
I can't think of one.
I can't think of one.

Speaker 1 (21:11):
When you think about what's on the horizon anything
next year that's going to be newat the high school.

Speaker 7 (21:19):
Absolutely.
I think the biggest thing iswe're expanding our dual
enrollment offerings.
So we've partnered withTri-County Tech and they've been
a great partner of ours foryears, but we're really
expanding our offerings withAnderson University where we'll
have some on-site Our teachersteaching dual enrollment courses

(21:39):
on-site in our schedule, whichwe're really, really excited
about it.

Speaker 8 (21:41):
Y'all were doing kind of the US history.
What are you adding?

Speaker 7 (21:43):
So, yeah, so we were piling US history last year.
We had 54 students involvedlast year.
This current year, We'll beadding English as well, as we'll
be adding AP.
Bless me, we'll be adding statsas well as probability
statistics.
So adding those two things tothe course offerings on top of
what AP is already offering.
We're adding a couple APcourses as well.

(22:04):
Physics is an option for thecoming year, we added
environmental this past year andthen so we're really, really
excited to just give moreopportunities for kids to.
You know, there's multiplepaths for them to choose and
pick what's best for them andfor them to take their next step
, whatever that may be.

Speaker 1 (22:19):
That's awesome and, Robbie, feel free to chime in
because I forgot to ask you thatquestion.

Speaker 6 (22:24):
So if you have anything to add about what
Palmetto is adding, please yeahwe're doing the same kind of
thing with Anderson Universityand we'll be offering English,
math and Spanish as dualenrollment courses.
Pretty excited about that.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
Is that like Spanish three or four?

Speaker 6 (22:40):
It's kind of like a Spanish four Four.

Speaker 2 (22:42):
Okay.

Speaker 6 (22:43):
Good.

Speaker 2 (22:44):
Very cool.

Speaker 1 (22:44):
Good, good, and you do have at least one coaching
change that you know of.
You'll have a new women'sbasketball coach, we will.
But a well-known person, right.

Speaker 7 (22:53):
It's kind of one of those guys from the community
Coach Mike Anderson's coming onboard.
He's been the assistant for theboys coach and really want to
step up.
And you know, coach Langstondid an incredible job for us as
our girls basketball coach andthis is just helping us take
that next step and really, youknow, see what's beyond, so

(23:13):
really excited to see how thatgoes.
He's in our building all thetime.
He's always working at windtime.
He's subbing for us.
He's in our building all thetime.
He's always working at windtime, he's subbing for us.
He's just around and you know,he's probably forgot more
basketball than Mr Whitfield'sever known, which isn't a lot,
but it is something.
Excuse me, dr Whitfield, excuseme, excuse me.

Speaker 1 (23:32):
Yes.
Dr, Lanford yes, yeah, and he'salways the guy that's been
really good to us with settingup our broadcasts and all that
he's.
What do you need?
What do you need?
I'll get it for you.
So great to see him gettingthat opportunity.

You're listening to MyPulseRadio.

Speaker 1 (25:39):
Welcome back to Boone Show on MyPulse Radio.
We're here with all theAnderson School District 1
principals.
By the way, zach will bejoining us in a few minutes to
talk sports.
I know he has some views on theNFL draft which we'll talk
about with some about someClemson players etc.
That's coming up in a few.
Right now it's Dr Whitfield.

(26:00):
Let's talk about Wren HighSchool.
What do you have to brag aboutthis year?
That's Wren.

Speaker 7 (26:04):
Collegiate Academy.
That's right, I'm just.

Speaker 8 (26:07):
I'm humbled to be sitting next to these two
gentlemen, just sharing thistime with them.
Yeah, we, I mean to just speakon the district.
I mean it's a wonderfuldistrict and these guys do an
amazing job and we believe it ornot, there's a lot of banter
but we, you know, talk and havea good relationship and you know

(26:30):
, share ideas and tell eachother that's a dumb idea and you
know they may have saved WrenHigh School from making some
dumb decisions once upon a time.
But you know W rent is a.
It's a wonderful place.
You know we're doing, um, somegood things.
Uh, I think a lot of times, likeyou said, we've done, we've had
a lot of success uh,athletically over the past
couple of years.
Um, that you know the mypredecessor, Dr Young, if he's

(26:53):
listening, could you know, couldn't, couldn't do, but you
know we've had some really goodcoaches.
I think you know I was tellingyou off air.
You know one of the mostsuccessful things I think we
have, a part of the RENcommunity, is the REN Youth
Association.
So a lot of those kids haveplayed and have kind of come up,

(27:16):
you know, some homegrown talentand allowed us to have some
success athletically.
And you know we one of thethings that you know taking over
as principal you know we reallytried to focus on the academics
too and you know thedemographics of Wren has kind of
changed.

(27:36):
You know it's always been areally good school and you know
we've had to kind of look andwe've you know it's always been
a you know a really good schooland you know we've we've had to
kind of look in and think ofthings differently to kind of
reach the needs of all ourstudents and we spent this this
year trying to figure out how dowe get our kids to be more
competitive on things, like youknow, our AP kids are doing
really well, but, like on theintercourse test.

(27:57):
So me and a couple of the otheradministrators have been going
around to our ESE classes andtalking about the importance of
that test and how do we, youknow, challenge kids to do
better.
We kind of started in anincentive program where you know
they're rewarded for forgetting a C or higher.
You know, because that helps uson the report card.
And I spent the last couple ofweeks because we're approaching
those, those dates to to go inthose classrooms and talk to
those students and you, becausewe're approaching those, those

(28:18):
dates, to to go in thoseclassrooms and talk to those
students and, um, you know we'rehoping that that makes a
different.
You know, academically, becausethat's kind of how we're
measured from the outsideacademically on the report card
and um, you know, trying totrying to be competitive in that
manner.
Um, you know we also talkedabout the big jump to 4a
athletically, you know we feelpretty good about it In our

(28:42):
region.
You know I'm a Westside grad sothis is kind of tough, you know
, for me.
I might have to wear ahalf-Wren, half-Westside jersey.

Speaker 2 (28:50):
Ooh goodness goodness , goodness.
I don't think that's good.

Speaker 8 (28:54):
No it would be all-Wren.

Speaker 7 (28:56):
I'm a Wren graduate and I wouldn't be caught dead in
blue and gold.
I'll be honest with you.

Speaker 8 (29:01):
But I mean we feel good about the region.
I mean Westside will obviouslybe our biggest challenge
football-wise.
They're coming off a statechampionship.
They've got an incredible groupof kids over there.
But we've got a lot ofconfidence in Coach Freight in
his second year, just like whenyou hired Ryan Norton Robbie.
You know Freight is a ring guy,you know he was two years as

(29:24):
our defensive coordinator and wefeel like you know he's the
right man and moving the programin the right direction.
So the rest of the region wefeel good about.
We've got Fountain Inn, we'vegot Lawrence, emerald and
Southside, but I thinkdefinitely Westside and Wren
will be the most competitive inthat region.

Speaker 2 (29:44):
How about some expansion over there?
I don't think you guys aredoing any expanding, are you?

Speaker 8 (29:51):
We'd like to.
They were referring to somefacility upgrades that may have,
you know, been mentioned onsocial media, but we are looking
at renovating our boys' andgirls' locker room, basketball
locker rooms.
The district's been verygenerous to kind of help us out
in that regard, because they areI mean, they're very dated.

(30:11):
You know, if you want to comeover and go on tour with me,
they were the same as when DrLanford was a student there.
There might be some graffitistill on the wall from when he
was a student there.

Speaker 7 (30:22):
When I got cut from ninth grade basketball, shout
out Coach Joy, I just it was theend for me.
So there probably is somegraffiti.
You vandalized the locker room.

Speaker 8 (30:31):
I appreciate that.
But we're renovating that.
We're also looking at doingsome stuff to our baseball
concessions just to make it alittle more functional over
there.
Those are the big you knowitems going into next year.
But I mean we are, you know, growing very rapidly, just like
the other schools.
We're the largest that Wren'sbeen since you know, palmetto

(30:53):
was or, excuse me, powdersvillewas opened and you know we're
looking at being over 1,300potentially next year.
We've grown by about 75 to 100kids a year.
So you know we're running outof space too.

Speaker 2 (31:08):
Everybody's knocking down the doors to be in Anderson
1 somewhere in one of yourschools.
Absolutely.

Speaker 8 (31:14):
It's a great district , it's a great place.
I mean just speaking as a dad, outside of being an educator.
I mean I wanted to be inanderson one, you know, so my
kids could, should you know, goto to anderson one school.

Speaker 2 (31:26):
So both academically and athletically absolutely, and
the arts and arts are importantfor sure, miss harrell.

Speaker 7 (31:32):
Yes, absolutely speaking of miss harrell's
daughter, was one of the starsof our spring show, did an
incredible job.
Of course, she was.

Speaker 8 (31:41):
What program was she in?

Speaker 2 (31:44):
She was in the play.

Speaker 8 (31:45):
Awesome In the musical.
What was the musical, matilda, did you go?
Dr Patrick, absolutely.

Speaker 5 (31:50):
It was incredible.

Speaker 2 (31:51):
Matilda.

Speaker 7 (31:51):
I was there on the Sunday afternoon.
Was she Matilda?

Speaker 2 (31:54):
No, she did not want to be Matilda she, she did not
want to be Matilda.
She wanted to be the funnymother.

Speaker 7 (31:59):
And she did an incredible job.
She has good inspiration.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
Very very funny.
That's what she wants, yeah.

Speaker 1 (32:05):
Yeah, that's cool.

Speaker 2 (32:07):
But yes, the arts are very important.

Speaker 8 (32:10):
I was picking on you, but yeah, I mean it's
regardless of what you look atand you're someone you'd be hard
pressed not to find.

Speaker 1 (32:17):
You know successful programs, that's right, yeah,
yeah, very cool, um, and youhave a coaching change in
basketball as well yeah, so PamMcGowans has been coaching for
the past, uh, eight years.

Speaker 8 (32:29):
She took over from Lynn Hicks, who was a legend in
her own right.
You know, hall of fame SouthCarolina.
You know, hall of fame coach, and, um, I think Pam is, uh will
find her place in the Hall ofFame too.
I mean, she's had an incredibletenure, you know, taking our
girls to state two years in arow and unfortunately, we faced
a generational talent in Joyce.

(32:52):
Edwards.
I mean, she's number two in thecountry for a reason, but our
girls she's done a marvelous jobwith the girls and and there's,
there's a posting right nowwhere we're, you know, looking
for the you know, uh, obviouslysome big shoes to fill.
We're looking for the right, right person to uh continue that
that tradition of excellence inthat and the girls program.

Speaker 1 (33:13):
Yeah, all right.
Uh, let's go quickly to thephone lines.
We have Zach, a Wren grad, onthere.
Zach, are you there?

Speaker 9 (33:20):
I'm here.

Speaker 1 (33:22):
There you are.
Holly had her fingers crossedthat she hit the right button.
Good to hear from you.
How are you, man?

Speaker 9 (33:28):
Man, I'm doing good.
How are you?

Speaker 1 (33:30):
OK, all right, we've got all three principals in here
today from all the District 1schools.

Speaker 9 (33:35):
Yeah, I heard the one from Palmetto talking about
upgrade.
Some kind of upgrade looks alittle bit better than rin.
You know talking about.
You know talking a little bitbaseball field definitely does.

Speaker 1 (33:45):
I mean it's true?

Speaker 9 (33:47):
yeah, I'm just wondering what their trophy case
looks oh my gosh statechampionships.
Just just just wondering.
But, but, um, but no, uh, um,but no, really not a whole lot
going on in the sports world.
As far as the NFL draft goes, that's really the only time I

(34:11):
watch the NFL, unless theJaguars are on, because I mean
the Panthers ain't worth reallywatching.

Speaker 1 (34:20):
Well, now you've got to root for the Eagles.

Speaker 9 (34:23):
No, I don't have to root for the Eagles.

Speaker 1 (34:24):
Yes you do.
Come on, Will Shipley, JeremiahTrotter.

Speaker 9 (34:28):
Well, I mean, I'm a Trotter fan, but I'm really not
a Will Shipley fan.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
What.

Speaker 9 (34:33):
I just hope for y'all he can hold on to the ball on
the one-yard line.
Zach's in a bad mood today theball on the one yard line.

Speaker 1 (34:41):
Hmm, Um so you know so but uh, he does seem he does
seem salty today Mr Struck anerve talking about that raggedy
baseball field.

Speaker 6 (34:48):
All right, bro, okay.

Speaker 9 (34:51):
You good, you good, yeah, you.
I think I think that ran, Ithink that ran baseball field
probably been there since mygreat-great-grandmother was a
baby.
But no, you're all right, man, you're okay.
But yeah, I mean, I want to seethem do good, I want to see

(35:12):
them succeed, obviously becausethey're from Clemson.
But it's really my biggestthing on the NFL draft the
Falcons sign Kirk Cousins hisbig old deal and then take
Michael Penix with what?
The fourth overall pick.

Speaker 1 (35:30):
Eighth yeah.

Speaker 9 (35:31):
Fourth overall pick.

Speaker 1 (35:32):
Yep.

Speaker 9 (35:33):
But I guess you're going to do kind of an Aaron
Rodgers Gordon Love thing there.

Speaker 1 (35:37):
I guess so, but Penix is already like almost 30 years
old, it seems like.
Isn't he like 24 or something?
Yeah, he's old.
So he's going to sit around fora couple more years at least,
because Cousins is guaranteed.

Speaker 9 (35:50):
I think he had two season-ending injuries during
his whole college career orsomething.
I know he had one season-endinginjury, but he's real
injury-prone too.
But we'll see.
I mean we'll.
You know, it's all about these, you know, fourth, fifth,
third-round pick guys thatalways seem to shine.

Speaker 1 (36:12):
Yeah, you're right.
You know so but we'll you knowlike Jordan Love.

Speaker 9 (36:17):
I had never heard of Jordan Love and I know he was
third overall, but you can seewhat he's done, you know.

Speaker 1 (36:24):
And nobody liked that for the first few years when he
was sitting behind AaronRodgers.
Yeah, now he's got his chance.

Speaker 9 (36:30):
We'll see.
It always makes out for a funfirst couple of weeks in the NFL
season, so we'll see whathappens.
And then you know nothingbetter than seeing LeBron James
lose in the NBA playoffs, youknow.

Speaker 6 (36:46):
Stomping his feet all around.
Hey, we're in agreement on thatone, yeah.

Speaker 9 (36:53):
But you know, like I said, really not much to talk
about.
I've got a notification on myphone that Clemson football
season kicks off four monthsfrom today.
There, you go.
I just hope that they're readyto at least keep it within 30
with Georgia there you go.
You know me that's coming froma diehard Clemson fan, I know.

(37:19):
If that offense you ain't goingto be able to turn the ball over
against Georgia and keep itwithin 30 points.
I mean because Georgia wasstill good last year but they
wasn't the Georgia that was fromtwo years ago and then the year
before that.
I mean you know, things canhappen.

(37:40):
I mean that's why you have thespring practices, that's why you
have the fall camps, that's whyyou have practice every day,
that's why Dad both kept sayingin the office I mean, holly was
at the games, she watched thesame team.
I did.

Speaker 1 (37:53):
She doesn't really watch the games.

Speaker 2 (37:55):
I do watch the games.

Speaker 1 (37:56):
Her deal is tailgating okay.

Speaker 2 (37:59):
Some seasons are more for tailgating.

Speaker 1 (38:00):
She doesn't even know there's a game going on.

Speaker 2 (38:02):
Some seasons are more for tailgating.

Speaker 9 (38:06):
But you know I mean Clemson.
Anybody can be in adisagreement or agreement with
me.
Clemson would have beensniffing the playoff last year
if they had held on to the ballin almost all those games.
They lost to Duke because ofturnovers.
They lost to Miami because ofWill Shipley's fumble on the
one-yard line.
That would have put them up 10points I think, maybe even two

(38:30):
touchdowns.
It's like Dabo said in one ofhis press conferences last year
we're doing it in practice.
We just can't put it all out onthe field.
Yeah, I mean you know, it's justwe'll see what happens.
It's going to be exciting.
I'm excited about it.
It's getting closer and closerand closer.

Speaker 1 (38:48):
Four months.

Speaker 9 (38:50):
Me and a friend was talking today that we go to all
the Wren high school footballgames together.

Speaker 8 (38:56):
That's right, that's right, brother games together,
and that's right.

Speaker 9 (39:03):
That's right, brother .

Speaker 1 (39:04):
Yeah, so uh the wren high school football games.
Not probably the real.
That's the wren principal rightthere.

Speaker 9 (39:06):
So oh, I talked to whiff but, um, we go to all of
them and of course, blake andkayla, my friends.
They're, uh, me and blake'sbeen friends since, uh, fourth
grade and him, him and Tiffanyactually went to church together
.
So he knew Tiffany growing up,me and him basically grew up
together.
They're diehard South Carolinafans.

(39:27):
So I get them on Friday nights.
We agree on Friday nights, wedisagree on Saturdays.
There you go.
So I was texting them today andI said I hate the offseason of
football because we don't seey'all.
I mean Friday mornings it popsup we're meeting for supper
tonight before the game and thenwe always sit in the same place

(39:48):
.
We sat in the same place for man.
I graduated in 2013.
So after that, because I was inMarch, probably from what?
Last 10 years, 10, 11 yearsI've sat there Same place
35-yard line, closest to thescoreboard.

Speaker 1 (40:06):
It'll be here soon enough.

Speaker 9 (40:08):
Yeah, and I'm looking forward to it.
I can't wait until the Braveswin the World Series.

Speaker 1 (40:12):
Well, you may have to wait a while there.
They can't get out of the firstround.

Speaker 9 (40:16):
Well, I know.
Well at least they get tocelebrate with a World Series
ring and don't get a ring forwinning.

Speaker 1 (40:22):
Yeah, yeah yeah, oh, my Look at the time.
All right, Zach, get out ofhere, take it easy.

Speaker 9 (40:32):
Yes, sir, you too, Y'all have a good one.

Speaker 1 (40:34):
All right, bye-bye.
By the way, dr Whitfield, doesWren have a new football field
or not, or is that one of therumors.

Speaker 8 (40:44):
We still have the Jack King field.

Speaker 1 (40:47):
I mean the actual field.
Yeah, it's been redone.

Speaker 8 (40:51):
Oh, I mean, we put a lot of money into the turf.
It looks amazing.

Speaker 1 (40:54):
I mean it's turf, it's not grass.

Speaker 8 (40:56):
Yeah, that's what I meant grass.

Speaker 1 (40:58):
Yeah, it's turf, it's not grass.
Yeah, that's what I meant grass, it's not field turf.
See, I haven't been over thereand kids are telling me, oh yeah
they're putting down turf overthere.

Speaker 8 (41:04):
That's lies.
We, what we?
What do you mean?

Speaker 1 (41:09):
We had some help, like I don't ever get any help
All right, I just had to,because you had mentioned rumors
, and so I just had to clearthat up.

Speaker 8 (41:19):
It does look good.
It needed it, yeah, and we putrye down.
You know the winter grass so itwas very green and looked
amazing.
Shout out to Scott Drayton.

Speaker 1 (41:29):
Well, at least your soccer team hasn't been scoring
many goals, so they are notripping it up too much.

Speaker 8 (41:34):
They.
Unfortunately that did notoccur.

Speaker 1 (41:37):
But all right, Moving along to the much anticipated
part of the show what thestudents want and what the
principals can give let's.
We've got a few things in here.
I'm not going to go over all ofthem, but some are particular
to specific schools.

Speaker 6 (41:54):
one for palmetto the students want strawberry milk
back no there you go the answerto what had you had strawberry
milk several students have askedfor strawberry milk what'd you
do to the strawberry milk?
I don't ever rememberstrawberry milk being there,
since I've been principal,that's a general practice.

Speaker 8 (42:14):
Yeah, oh well, maybe so oh.

Speaker 6 (42:16):
I mean, I've heard, there's a shortage of strawberry
milk across the nation, so wereally can't address that as a
school administration.

Speaker 2 (42:24):
Kyle Adam, do y'all have strawberry milk?

Speaker 7 (42:27):
They don't know, we don't, we have, we have.

Speaker 8 (42:31):
Powdersville has like what do you have a Starbucks?

Speaker 1 (42:33):
Yeah, they probably have goat milk and everything
else in there.
It's like almond milk, that'sright.

Speaker 8 (42:40):
Some frappuccinos.

Speaker 7 (42:41):
And.

Speaker 1 (42:43):
But that I had to mention that because even today,
when they knew you were comingon, robbie, they actually don't
forget.
Ask them about the strawberrymilk.

Speaker 6 (42:53):
We want strawberry milk.
I didn't even realize it was anissue, but like I said, there's
a nationwide shortage becauseof the bat soup flu a few years
ago.
I mean, we've just neverrecovered.
We've never been able to catchup with the production of
strawberry milk nationwide.

Speaker 2 (43:08):
Well, at least you have an answer, maybe there'll
be a fable that comes out withthat.

Speaker 1 (43:15):
Some students want to be able to leave for lunch now.
We had bhp on last week andthey have no restaurants near
them whatsoever.
But again, if you're inpowdersville you have 60 000
restaurants near your school.
Palmetto has a few and uh renwell, maybe not they can go to
real pizza.

Speaker 6 (43:34):
Ren would have 1300 people at canes corner yeah,
exactly, or southern oaks, butuh, would that, dr lanford.

Speaker 1 (43:42):
Would that ever be a possibility for them to leave
campus?
Absolutely not there we go.

Speaker 7 (43:46):
There's your answer, guys yeah, there's too much
liability in that yeah, ofcourse and they're already late
as it is much less.
Oh oh, let me go pick.
Well, the line was long and Ididn't make it back to class.
Too bad, so sad I concur, that's a horrible idea.
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (43:59):
And here's another one for Robbie and the rest of
you.
I know we'll chime in becausewe talked about this earlier,
but there at least three or fourstudents that want to wear
pajamas all the time.

Speaker 6 (44:12):
And my response to them typically is if you want to
wear your pajamas, go toWalmart.
This ain't Walmart there you go, it's not Walmart.

Speaker 2 (44:19):
I agree.

Speaker 7 (44:19):
How do you define pajamas though?

Speaker 1 (44:22):
That's such a the way they make things nowadays.

Speaker 7 (44:23):
It's hard to define any kind of yeah, it is, I feel
like the onesie would be okay, the onesie.

Speaker 6 (44:29):
Yeah, onesie, a onesie a dragon onesie would be
fine, the union jack with theflap on the back in some ways
that may be.

Speaker 1 (44:38):
You know more, um, easily to dress, easy to dress
code, than some of the otherstuff.
Um, let's see, some people aresaying, uh, they should get more
excuses for absences if they'regetting good grades.

Speaker 7 (44:55):
No.

Speaker 1 (45:00):
Like they should only be unexcused.

Speaker 8 (45:01):
if they need to be there, do you get more days?

Speaker 1 (45:02):
off if you do a good job at work.
Oh, there you go.
That's a good point, very goodpoint.

Speaker 7 (45:06):
Part of the job is showing up and being there and
doing the thing at the time thegrind, dr Lanford, absolutely
right.

Speaker 1 (45:12):
Okay, here's another pajamas.
There's another strawberry milk.

Speaker 7 (45:17):
They're getting after you, Mr Ray.

Speaker 1 (45:20):
All right, I think this is primarily a Wren thing
that there's problems in theparking lot.
People are stealing parkingspaces.
There's not a good flow withgetting out of there.
There's too many wrecks in theparking lot.

Speaker 8 (45:36):
What's going on with parking at Wren?
I would say there's a strongcorrelation with parking lots in
general and student drivers.
So I own one at Wren HighSchool that's in the parking lot
and he's not the best driver.
But I mean I would say that thebiggest issue is we're growing
and we have a finite amount ofparking spaces.
So I mean eventually we willhave to address that.

(45:58):
They can park at Pattersville.
We're full.

Speaker 1 (46:04):
Here's an interesting one and this is from a good
student of mine the exam rule.
Of course you have theexemption rule if they have a
grade of an A or whatever theysay.
You should lower that a littlebit to like 85, with no more
than five unexcused absences, because some people they just

(46:25):
don't take tests well and ifthey're doing really well and
they're showing up every day, they feel like they should get a
little more leeway withexempting exams.

Speaker 6 (46:35):
Hey, just for context before I answer this, since you
said it was from a good studentof yours, can I assume that the
strawberry milk and pajamasquestions?

Speaker 1 (46:44):
were from bad students.
No, not necessarily, but thisis a very academic minded.
Oh, ok, let's put it that wayLower the bar.

Speaker 7 (46:55):
I think I'd say do the opposite.
I'd argue we take away examexemptions altogether, because
are we preparing kids for thenext step If they're making A's
and they're planning to go tofour-year and they have exams
sitting behind that and we'renot offering those exams?
I think we should do theopposite and have everybody take
exams.

Speaker 1 (47:11):
That's just my personal opinion, that's
powder's role, ladies, andgentlemen, yeah, that's powder's
role.

Speaker 6 (47:15):
That's a great answer .
We do need to kick the rigor upeverywhere.

Speaker 7 (47:17):
I think we step it up a notch and everybody takes
their exam.
Well, in college it's not goingto happen that Right that you
know there students for the nextstep and they're trying to go
to four-year university ortwo-year university and they're
making A's across the board, which is usually correlating.
Then why would we not have themsit for a final, a cumulative

(47:41):
final, to kind of prep that?
And so they're flexing thatmuscle, doing that work in the
high school so they can takethat next step?
So the pressure's not on whatyou think about APs, you think
about ESEs.
That's the only time.

Speaker 8 (47:56):
A lot of them even take finals and that is that
preparing kids for the next stepso I could argue the other
direction, but I know how thatwould go with our community.
They'd be really excited aboutit.
Dr whitfield, it's tough toargue against that I mean.

Speaker 1 (48:02):
I mean, all right, I concur back.

Speaker 6 (48:04):
Hey, something we rarely say you're right, adam in
the three years we've knowneach other I think that's the
second.

Speaker 1 (48:15):
There is the topic of school lunches themselves
getting better food for schoollunches.
Yeah we agree.
How's that going?

Speaker 7 (48:23):
Listen, it's one of those things where that's not
necessarily in our purview, butyou've got to think about it
from a context of regulation andwhat's being cooked and what's
allowed to be cooked.
Unfortunately, our captorsdon't do a ton of straight
cooking because of all theconstraints within the meals.
And then also you're talkingabout a cost perspective.
It's just not something that'sin the cards, but I would agree

(48:46):
Bring the deep fryers back.

Speaker 8 (48:47):
Yeah, bring the deep fryers back.

Speaker 7 (48:48):
There you go, hey the old grill that were in high
school would, yeah, bring thedeep fires back.

Speaker 6 (48:51):
Hey, the old grill at Wren High School used to be
those hot ham and cheesesandwiches Top of the line.
The orange chicken is verypopular at Palmetto High.
Well, the other day they threwa little extra spin in there.
Some sweet Thai chili chicken.

Speaker 7 (49:03):
Yeah, that was next level Wing Day is a great day.

Speaker 12 (49:06):
Taco Tuesday Taco Tuesday is a hit, sounds good I
mean you know they've done agood.

Speaker 7 (49:11):
Our cafeteria staff does an incredible job with what
they have.

Speaker 2 (49:14):
Well, and ultimately it's not your guys' decision,
Right.
I mean that's a district officedecision.

Speaker 6 (49:19):
We do all love our food service employees, though.

Speaker 2 (49:22):
Yeah, they do a phenomenal job, that's right.

Speaker 1 (49:24):
One student actually said I hate prison food so much.

Speaker 6 (49:30):
Anyway, hey, and that student may get to experience
it at some point, know if theyreally hate it or not knowing
that, student, you may be rightum, let's see we agree with you.

Speaker 8 (49:39):
We, any chance we get to you know, push things to the
district office I wouldencourage them to contact um dr
seth young.

Speaker 2 (49:48):
Yes, do we need to give his cell phone?

Speaker 8 (49:50):
out.

Speaker 2 (49:53):
He was here a couple of weeks ago.
Yes, it was.

Speaker 1 (49:57):
You should have him back to for rebuttal, let's see.
One funny thing is there wereseveral requests to start school
later and there are otherrequests to end school earlier,
so but yet you know we cananswer that one.
We hate late arrival and earlyrelease as it is here at the

(50:20):
Career Center.
What are you guys' thoughts onthe times of school?
And obviously, again, you'renot going to change that without
a big thing happening, but whatare your thoughts?

Speaker 6 (50:28):
I think a lot of times you know traffic's going
to dictate that and you knowwhat's going on with the
elementaries, in the middles, and you know sometimes, like the
menu it's out of our hands, wekind of have to do things to
best accommodate what else ishappening.
So there could be changescoming.

Speaker 1 (50:48):
All right, all right, and finally, a few of the
electives that they would liketo see in school being at nap
time.

Speaker 7 (50:57):
I would argue somewhere.
Students are already doing that.

Speaker 1 (51:00):
Yes, they kind of do it within their other classes.
It's like a double duty.

Speaker 6 (51:04):
I had one doing it during an EOC yesterday.

Speaker 8 (51:06):
I had to go wake them up.
I had to go wake them up.

Speaker 3 (51:09):
Then they could see you're hiring.

Speaker 1 (51:12):
Yeah, how about?

Speaker 6 (51:16):
MMA, I don't know her .

Speaker 1 (51:22):
Let's see, is that a?

Speaker 7 (51:25):
Patterson question.

Speaker 1 (51:26):
Do you like MMA?

Speaker 7 (51:32):
You know, as part of our WIM program we had pursued
and looked at some of that stuff.

Speaker 9 (51:34):
But I think the liability and the training and
the whole hand to hand combatthing creates some issues good a
video game elective.

Speaker 1 (51:43):
You know you can learn skills with video games.

Speaker 8 (51:46):
You have some of that over here.
We do that's the most popularwin class.

Speaker 7 (51:51):
We have right now our eSports and our video games
Fencing.

Speaker 1 (51:58):
There might be some liability there.

Speaker 8 (52:00):
Let's give kids swords.
Is that like putting up fences?
We need some new fences.
Yeah, installing they can comedown to my house and have that
class there.

Speaker 1 (52:08):
There is American Ninja Warrior class.
We talked about this with theBHP people.

Speaker 2 (52:12):
You know Mary was open and receptive to that
actually That'd be a good PEclass, wouldn't it?

Speaker 1 (52:16):
Put up a jungle gym and then have them, you know,
compete on the show.
We're all in favor of.

Speaker 6 (52:21):
Mary doing the pilot on that, and then we'll see what
happens.

Speaker 7 (52:24):
We'll see what happens at BHP, Then we'll
follow up.
We'll circle back if you will.

Speaker 2 (52:28):
Maybe she might be able to do the course.
Oh, she would do the course, without a doubt.

Speaker 1 (52:33):
Yeah, all right, we've got one more thing left to
do.
We're going to get everybody'skeep this in the back of your
mind.
We're going to get everybody'srecommendations.
We do this with our guestsevery year now and it's actually
turned out pretty cool.
We'll have each of you give anentertainment recommendation
something that you're reading orstreaming or binging, watching
TV movies, anything like thatand a food recommendation,

(52:55):
whether it be something, thatrecipe that you have, or a
restaurant you like, or a dishat that restaurant.
That's the way we're going towrap up the show, and I will
tell you, holly, guess where Iwent last weekend.
I went to Earl Street.
You did.

Speaker 5 (53:07):
Did you do the brunch ?

Speaker 1 (53:08):
No, I had dinner, but I had the salmon and my wife
had the mahi shrimp and gritsOutstanding Just outstanding.

Speaker 6 (53:18):
Did either of you try the collards?

Speaker 1 (53:20):
I did not no.

Speaker 6 (53:21):
The collards are amazing.
Well, now I know the jerkchicken.

Speaker 1 (53:25):
Everything was good, and one thing I really like
about there was that the portionsize was perfect.
I like going to a restaurantwhere you don't feel like you're
stuffing yourself and you don'tfeel like you've got room left
over.
It was like perfect size and ittasted great and the atmosphere
is great.
I like where it's all open andeverything, and so Mary hit a
home run on that one.
So before we get to thoserecommendations, we have to

(53:50):
settle something on thebasketball court behind me,
because um and robbie's going tojoin in too, because we can't
leave him out.
But lanford and whitfield weregoing back and forth about this
whole basketball thing.
We won two out of three we wonthe state championship.

Speaker 7 (54:08):
We did congratulate them on their region
championship.

Speaker 1 (54:13):
Well, you just got a little bigger trophy, that's all
.

Speaker 8 (54:15):
At the board meeting.
I'm pretty sure your coach wasrecognized as.

Speaker 1 (54:19):
Palmetto, yes, as Palmetto the.

Speaker 8 (54:21):
Palmetto, yes, you're not getting any recognition.

Speaker 7 (54:25):
No big shout out to Coach Austin Anderson.
He's head basketball coach ofstate champions and Palmetto
High Teacher of the Year.
Yeah, what is up with that guy?

Speaker 10 (54:32):
He won an award last year too, didn't he win that
Channel 4 thing?
Yeah, golden Apple, goldenApple.

Speaker 7 (54:37):
And he was a media broadcasting student.

Speaker 8 (54:39):
Correct.
Do you know why he's sosuccessful?

Speaker 1 (54:42):
Why?
I want to know.
He's a Wren graduate.
He's a Wren graduate.
Oh, here we go, yeah.

Speaker 7 (54:48):
In spite of his Ren graduate.
He has done well.
He's just winning everything.

Speaker 1 (54:52):
But well, yeah, congratulations to him, though
he's a great guy.
So we want to have a littlecompetition here.
You'll find on the floor thereare three pieces of tape.
There's a one-point line, atwo-point line and a three-point
line.
Now I'm going to ask you ageneral knowledge question.
If you get it right, uh, youget to take a shot, and we're

(55:14):
not going to spend all night onthis, we're only going to do it
for a few minutes, butsomebody's going to win this
little basketball competition.
Okay, it's not easy to shoot onthat thing.
It's, uh, it's not not verysoft rim that's not regulation,
no, it's not um, maybe for hollybut but
not for the rest of us.
Okay, so we're going to startwith Dr Whitfield here, since

(55:39):
he's closest to the field ofplay.
A lot of pressure, all right, and you get to choose.
If you get the question right, you get to choose which line
you're going to shoot from.
Well, actually, okay, we'llgive you one warm-up shot so you
can kind of get the range andthen you take the shot.
Okay, all right, and we'll giveyou one warm-up shot so you can
kind of get the range and thenyou take the shot.
Okay, all right, and we'll workthis around a couple of times
and see who can win thecompetition, because we have to
have a basketball champion here.
No more talking back and forth, all right.

(56:01):
So let's see if I can actuallyget to the page with the
questions.
Not that I have enough paper, got a few trees here.
These are bad questions.
Name a current judge ofAmerican Idol.

Speaker 8 (56:20):
Ooh, ooh, simon Cowell, no.

Speaker 1 (56:25):
Robbie.

Speaker 6 (56:25):
Lou Bryan.

Speaker 1 (56:26):
There you go.
Okay, come on up here, you getto shoot a warm-up shot and then
the ball's over there.
There's a one-point line, rightbehind me.

Speaker 7 (56:36):
The other two schools are busy participating in
athletics, not watching them.

Speaker 1 (56:40):
That's why we're giving Robbie a chance here.

Speaker 8 (56:41):
I'm a voice guy.

Speaker 1 (56:43):
He's going from the three-point line and he is a
little bit short.

Speaker 3 (56:47):
Plenty of air under that one.

Speaker 1 (56:49):
Okay, oh, that was your warm-up shot.
Plenty of air under that one.
Okay, oh, that was your warm-upshot.
So now he knows the range he'sdribbling.

Speaker 7 (56:54):
He's going back to that three-point line.
He's at the three-point line.
He's got it.
Now it's up.
Oh, that was close, much better.

Speaker 1 (57:00):
Take another one.
I'll give you three shots, because we don't have time for
ours.
Build him a new gym.
We've.
Let's give him one more, onemore.
No, he doesn't keep gettingshots.

Speaker 8 (57:11):
No, I said he gets three shots.
He lost.
There's clearly favoritism.
You don't have to shoot fromthat line.
I'm waiting for team takes.

Speaker 14 (57:17):
And you're listening to Mindful.

Speaker 1 (57:18):
I hit a button as I turned around, sorry.

Speaker 6 (57:20):
Okay, I'll go to this one so did you make it.

Speaker 7 (57:23):
I missed it from the one point rather than go for the
three, all right.

Speaker 1 (57:33):
So Robbie Roach with the early lead.

Speaker 8 (57:36):
Who are the other two judges?
I literally have no clue LionelRichie and.

Speaker 1 (57:40):
Katy Perry.
Katy Perry is getting ready toleave, but she is a judge right
now.
All right.
The question goes to Dr Lanfordnow, how many Mission
Impossible movies are there?
Five.

Speaker 10 (57:55):
No, he was confident , anybody else?

Speaker 1 (57:56):
want to chime in.

Speaker 8 (57:56):
Yeah, there were three that started out, and then
I think there's been threeafter that, so I'm going to go
with six.

Speaker 1 (58:03):
No, there's actually one more that just got released
this past summer.

Speaker 2 (58:09):
Seven.

Speaker 7 (58:09):
Seven.

Speaker 3 (58:12):
And there's one more that's.

Speaker 1 (58:13):
Oh man, take it easy, I'm trying to help you.
You just hit me in the headwith a ball.

Speaker 6 (58:18):
All right, that's assault man, I just assaulted
him.

Speaker 1 (58:23):
Yeah, that was assault.
Thank goodness I decided to usethe Nerf ball, not the
pickleball or something.
Let's see who.
Robbie, who is the most recentactor to play James Bond.

Speaker 8 (58:36):
Oh, I could get that one.
Can I steal?

Speaker 6 (58:39):
Pierce Brosnan?

Speaker 2 (58:40):
No, he was a good one though.
Yeah, I think you can steal.

Speaker 8 (58:43):
This would be Daniel Craig.

Speaker 2 (58:45):
There we go.

Speaker 1 (58:45):
Whitfield, whitfield, you get a warm-up.

Speaker 7 (58:49):
You remind me of Daniel Craig.

Speaker 1 (58:51):
Yes, I'm going to read it out for you All right,
whitfield, you get a warm-upshot plus three shots from
wherever you want to be.

Speaker 6 (58:56):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (58:58):
So here we go, mr.
Roach is making the pass RobbieRoach trying to keep his
one-nothing lead.

Speaker 10 (59:04):
Three-point attempt is now going off the rim.

Speaker 1 (59:07):
Another one.
All right, here comes anotherone Another one, all right, here
comes another one.
Oh, hit the light these guysare destroying the studio right
now, all right.

Speaker 7 (59:16):
And third shot is, oh , a little long.

Speaker 1 (59:18):
All right, he gets one more, though, because one
was a warm-up.
He missed the one point.

Speaker 7 (59:24):
He just missed it from less than two feet.
All right, Robbie Roach isstill in the lead.

Speaker 1 (59:28):
This is great Lanford's been shut out so far.

Speaker 3 (59:31):
So let's see if we can get him on the board.

Speaker 7 (59:34):
I know these guys got to go, so hopefully we can.
Does this count to CarlislePoint?
It's Coach Yarbrough, are youlistening?

Speaker 1 (59:40):
Does this count?
Okay, what was the name?
Dr Lanford?
What was the name of the memethat emerged in the weeks
leading up to the release of theBarbie and Oppenheimer movies?

Speaker 7 (01:00:01):
What was the meme name that came out?
That was a combination of thosetwo movies.

Speaker 1 (01:00:04):
I think I know that Barbie-heimer.

Speaker 7 (01:00:06):
All right, I'm going to give it to you, barbenheimer,
that's close enough.

Speaker 1 (01:00:08):
Go ahead.
Let's see if you can get somepoints on the board.
I got to get two points.

Speaker 7 (01:00:11):
I got to get two points to win.
Robbie Roach is tossing ashutout.
I'm going to try thethree-pointer too, just because
we're all here.

Speaker 8 (01:00:16):
Throw it as hard as you can at it.

Speaker 1 (01:00:19):
Well, the first shot is a practice, so okay, now he's
got the range.

Speaker 8 (01:00:22):
You can't see it, but he's going with the granny shot
approach.

Speaker 1 (01:00:24):
Yeah, he is the old Rick.
Barry I got Okay, two more.

Speaker 3 (01:00:29):
Oh, got one more.

Speaker 1 (01:00:31):
Got one more chance.
Oh, he's going for it, he'sgoing for it.
There it is.
Oh, lanford with the three.
Well, they all had a chance, soI guess that's it right.

Speaker 13 (01:00:45):
That's it.
I mean, we're out of time, soreally we have a champion.

Speaker 1 (01:00:49):
So Powderfield wins the championship.
Probably should have counted,it went under him, but hey he
went in.
So Powderfield wins Palmettosecond, wren third.
Last, so I'll tell the kidstomorrow in this great
basketball tournament whathappened, exactly how that works
, where all of two shots weremade.
All right, let's get theserecommendations real quick.

(01:01:10):
State games yeah, let's getthese recommendations real quick
.
State games yeah, let's getthese recommendations real quick
.

Speaker 8 (01:01:19):
Dr Whitfield, what do you have entertainment-wise for
people to check out?
I guess book-wise.
One of my favorite authors isDavid Grand Lost City of Z
Killers of the Flower Moon.
He's got a new book out thatI've been reading called the um,
oh my gosh, the wager.
Okay, it's uh after a britishship that was kind of like
wrecked and they were, you know,uh, shipwrecked and kind of

(01:01:40):
about that.
Their their story cool.
So yeah, it's a wager, thewager yeah okay, david grand,
okay, cool um robbie what?

Speaker 6 (01:01:48):
you got.
I would would recommend FullSwing on Netflix.
It's a series about kind ofchronicling the experience of
some professional golfers.

Speaker 1 (01:02:01):
Really interesting, cool Dr Lanford.

Speaker 7 (01:02:03):
Something I've really been into is the Ruthless
Elimination of Hurry.
John Ortberg great book.
Just trying to you know, in ourlives we get into a lot that
really just trying to put thingsin perspective about what's
most important, you'd be notJohn Ortberg.
John Mark Comer got the wrongguy in my head and so I would.
That's been really happened tome as I've read it recently.

Speaker 1 (01:02:24):
Cool, cool, the Ruthless.
Yeah, all right Now your foodrecommendations or restaurants,
or whatever, dr Whitfield.

Speaker 8 (01:02:31):
All right, so you talked about downtown Anderson.

Speaker 1 (01:02:34):
Yep.

Speaker 8 (01:02:34):
All right.
So I'm going to give you abreakfast recommendation.

Speaker 2 (01:02:37):
Oh, that's a good one .

Speaker 8 (01:02:38):
And I'm pretty sure it's owned by the same people as
some of Joe's, but it's MrRiver's Breakfast Joint.
Really, and they're known fortheir frittatas.

Speaker 7 (01:02:47):
Really, what's a frittata?

Speaker 8 (01:02:50):
I figured you would know what it is, being the
Powder's Hill principle, butit's kind of like an omelet.
But it's not flipped over, it'sjust like circular.

Speaker 1 (01:02:58):
It's like a quiche.
So it's like an egg pizza.

Speaker 8 (01:03:03):
No, it's not baked, it's like you cook an omelet.

Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
It's thin.
Yes, it's like thin it's like acrepe.

Speaker 1 (01:03:14):
No, Not the really thin pancakes.

Speaker 8 (01:03:15):
All right, so that's again the name of the place.
Was what Mr River's BreakfastJoint, All right.

Speaker 2 (01:03:17):
And does it matter what type of frittata, or do
they just have one?

Speaker 8 (01:03:21):
It varies.

Speaker 2 (01:03:22):
Okay, so you pick different things Each week.
I think.

Speaker 8 (01:03:25):
I don't think it's daily, but I think each week it
varies.
But I'm a big breakfast guy.
I love, on the weekends goingout for breakfast.
Okay, because we, you know,we're not like the career center
we got kids as soon as we getthere.

Speaker 6 (01:03:38):
So wow um robbie, what you got I'm gonna suggest,
um, the scuffle town food truckpark.
This is over in simpsonville.
I was trying to go to a mexicanrestaurant one and it was
packed.
And I looked over and there'sall these food trucks.
I'm like when did this happen?
Anyway, there's multiple foodtrucks.
I went to one called Uprootedhad a Colombian style hot dog

(01:04:01):
and it was amazing.
Wow, what does that?

Speaker 7 (01:04:03):
mean, is that Colombian style?
Is that like?

Speaker 6 (01:04:05):
from Colombia, South Carolina?
No, it was from Colombia.
Oh, Colombia Not.
Columbia so it was like a deepfried hot dog that you know had
like some peppers and some spicysalsa and stuff like that on it
, and it was really good though.

Speaker 2 (01:04:20):
Is that off of Woodruff Road, on the backside
of Scumptown?

Speaker 6 (01:04:23):
No, it's actually in the closer part of Simpsonville.
You know, simpsonville kind ofis a big spread, but it's over
off of Fairview kind of wherethe Target and all those things
are, but it's right beside theAudi, so you're kind of going on
down before you get to 385.
Scuffletown Food Truck Park.

(01:04:44):
All right?

Speaker 1 (01:04:47):
Dr Lanford.

Speaker 7 (01:04:47):
Listen, it's a simple thing.
We're in Anderson, so I'm goingto go with El Taco.
That's the letter.
El taco, it's, uh, my man, sergio, at the front doing his
thing.
It's a a quick order um freshright next to arnold's, right
there.

Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
Uh, I did, and that they you know, we heard that
from somebody else who said thatI forget they are, and great
people what do you order?

Speaker 7 (01:05:09):
uh, so I get, I get el gordo.
So, if so, if you know, if youknow it, if you know your
Spanish, you know what thatmeans.
If you know me, it makesperfect sense.
But that's a quesadilla with a,it's got some carnitas some
some steak, some chicken, aswell as some beans, some fritos,
some rice and then meltedcheese and then queso.
So it's incredible.

(01:05:29):
And then and they, it's like Isaid, it's cooked you order at
the counter, they, they cook it.
They have fresh salsa there foryou.
Great, I mean, it is top of theline.
