dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (00:00):
What do we have in mind to talk about

(00:01):
today,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (00:01):
Well, you sent the email the other day
about the myths debunked.
And I thought that that was aninteresting little

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_09065 (00:08):
About the what?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (00:10):
I didn't read it

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_0906 (00:12):
myths, myths debunked.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090 (00:15):
Gotcha.
Okay.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (00:17):
And I think we can do it in all
kinds of various

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (00:19):
about design or UFOs or conspiracy
theories

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (00:23):
Well, if we,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_0 (00:24):
Whatever.
Yeah.
This is a show about UFOs, youdumbass.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (00:28):
If you have data about UFOs, then
let's, let's provide that to

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090 (00:32):
they're real.
they're, real

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (00:34):
love to know.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (00:42):
So, so today we'll, we will talk
about myths debunked and I thinkthere's a lot of different ways
that we can do that\

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_09065 (00:48):
Okay.
Let me read this to you.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (00:49):
I think there

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (00:50):
Only people with a lot of money can
have an interior designer and itgoes on to say 1 of the most
common myths about interiordesign.
That is a luxury reserved onlyfor the wealthy.
In reality, interior designerscan work with a range of
budgets.
Skilled designers possess theability to transform any space

(01:14):
while being mindful of financialconstraints.
They can offer cost effectivesolutions, repurposing existing
furniture, and sourcingaffordable yet stylish decor
items.
That's the first among interiordesigners myths.
You have to have a lot of

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (01:34):
yeah, I was going to say, so in a
nutshell, you got to be rich.
Which is not true.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_09065 (01:39):
Yeah, and we that's just not true.
It's just not

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (01:44):
no, well, I will think that that,
uh, what they've said there is areal sugar coated, soft coated
version of, uh, the, the, thetruth of, you know, it doesn't
take a lot of money, because itdoesn't, right?
But

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (01:58):
You

jeremy_1_08-22-2024 (01:58):
reupholster a piece of furniture, That's not
cheap, right?
Like there's things that youdon't have to invest in.
Right.
But this is not just for thecountry club

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (02:06):
Well, and that's the thing you don't
have to do.
You don't all have to do it inthe same day.
You know, you can build onsomething.
You can have a plan.
You can say, Oh, I want tochange my artwork right here and
focus

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (02:17):
I read that it reminded me of my,
one of my very first clients, they bought the smallest house
in Heartland.
They had just got married withinmonths.
And we're the same age becausethey've got kids in college.
They're a little bit youngerthan me, but they were just, uh,
when I started working, I wasprobably 28 and they were 25.

(02:38):
They were young.
And, I remember.
Her saying that she wanted toget it right and what you just
said Stuart that it didn'thappen overnight and she was
willing to buy one piece of thetime and in and not instant
gratification and she knew itwould take a while and that
client and that couple's stilltogether and I still work with

(02:59):
them uh it's 30 years laterroughly and working on their
third house and things that wedid 30 years ago.
Some of the things that we did, then they still have and because
we got it right, you know, itwas the right, console table for
the four year, the right, uh,beautiful mirror, uh, that we

(03:20):
got right.
And it's not in their four yearanymore, but it's in the back
hallway and I've always, beenpleased with that.
Project because she got it.
that, you know, you don't alwayshave to buy cheap.
Don't have to always buyexpensive, but buy what you
love.
And, I still love that one.
That, that's what reminded me.
They, they did not have a lot ofmoney, but what they bought,

(03:42):
they got it right.
And I always loved that onebecause it was, we're still
going, we're still going 30years later.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (03:48):
When Dwayne sent this email about,
this is something that maybe wewould discuss.
I wrote down a couple of likequick things of like, okay,
these Some elements that Ithought that these are common
misconceptions, or maybe theseare, there's one that's kind of
a pain in the ass.
It just pisses me off when I seeit.
People do it online.

(04:09):
I guess it would be called anick.
I don't know.
Um, but.
Do you know what an ick is?
Are we up on this vernacular?
Okay, well the kids the kidsthese days call it an ick,
something that just kind of

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (04:20):
not on the

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_0906 (04:22):
you're not, this, this is on

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (04:24):
Oh,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (04:25):
not on Twitter I'm not on the, I'm
not on Twitter either because Ican't stand Elon Musk, and I'm
not giving him a penny.
Um, no, so an ick is kind oflike just a, like a turn off, or
like a just like a It's justlike a, ooh, like, that's just,
that just gives you the coldchills, right?
Like just away from it.
So they call it an ick.
So whatever.
Um, and if you're younger thanme and you really know what an

(04:47):
ick is, and I got that reallywrong, just bear with me today.
Um, but one of the ones that Ithink that a myth is that people
always are wanting to know whatthe trends are because they want
to try to incorporate it intheir home.
And I think we have said thismultiple times here.
Trends come and go.
You do not need to try toincorporate all of that into
your home.
Unless that's the trend issomething that you just love and

(05:09):
you've loved your whole

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (05:10):
to say, unless you just want to be
trendy.
We,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (05:13):
Well, I mean, if you just want to be
trendy and you got the money tospend it, go ahead,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_0906 (05:17):
talked about early on in episode the
lady had the leopard chair andleopard drapes and leopard rug
and leopard underwear andleopard bra.
She went all in.
She went all in and that's okay.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (05:32):
If that's, if she's loved that her
whole life, you go right ahead.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (05:35):
has.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (05:36):
Yeah.
Oh, yeah, I'm sure.
Another myth that I, and I'msure you all ran into with
customers, and so we'll talkabout home design stuff, but
then we'll also talk aboutfloral design stuff, because I
also think that there's mythswith that.
Like people, it's something thatthey don't have a big
understanding of, so they maynot know how to do it.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090 (05:54):
Mm-Hmm.
Absolutely.
Yeah.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (05:56):
Um, but fabrics, a more expensive
fabric is a better fabric.
And I think we've also maybeslightly touched on that.
And so that kind of correlatesto pillows.
That is not true.
You know, a lot of this has todepend on how the fabric's
produced, how it's dyed, howmuch of it is made, how much of

(06:17):
it is purchased from the mill.
All those things that go into aprice, not necessarily how
wonderful or how long lastingthis fabric is going to be.
So don't see an expensive pillowand go, Ooh, this is going to,
this is a good, this is going tolast forever.
No chances are somebody boughtexpensive ass piece of fabric
and then they paid somebody waytoo much to sew it together.

(06:41):
And chances are, if it's anexpensive pillow, Unless it's
maybe from a few brands, theyprobably still have the same
insert inside that many othersdo.
And you're going to lay on itfor eight months and then little
goose feathers or littlefeathers are gonna start popping
out and that's

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (06:57):
Oh, Yeah.
it's

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (06:58):
Oh, Lord.
Yeah.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (06:59):
yeah.
And so it's so frustrating.
So there are, um, for me whereto invest in some good money is
make sure you get good pillowforms that you can put in that,
I mean, they're still going toshed some to get something that
you're not going to be poked inthe ass every time you sit down.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (07:15):
Hmm.
Okay.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_0906 (07:18):
Don't, don't be misled with price
because as we know, the mostexpensive isn't always the
nicest, best quality

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (07:24):
not at all.
Trouble with you, Stuart.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (07:28):
Do what?
What'd

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_0906 (07:30):
What's wrong with you today?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (07:31):
Oh, nothing.
I'm thinking.
A baby started kindergarten.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (07:37):
I knew

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (07:38):
No.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (07:39):
it.
I knew it was something going

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (07:40):
No.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (07:40):
Did you not know she started
yesterday?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_ (07:42):
yesterday.
It's alright.
She's a big

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (07:47):
she excited?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (07:48):
Yeah, she's very excited.
Uh, on the way

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (07:51):
Tell him what she told

stuart_1_08-22-2024_0906 (07:52):
there, she went, Daddy.
Cause you know, we've talkedabout it all week.
She's very excited.
She goes, Daddy, I think todayI'm nervous.
I said, well, sometimes nervouscan mean excited.
And she went, Oh no, I'm notnervous for me.
I'm nervous for you.
Cause you'll be lost.

(08:12):
was like, Oh my God.
And then I was quiet and shewent, are you okay?
Daddy?
I said, yes, I'm okay.
She goes, don't worry.
After school, we'll go get icecream.
She worked every angle of thatconversation.
Yeah.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (08:29):
we were, I was just talking to my
mother-in-Law last night and mysister-in-Law about how kids
will manipulate every situationto, uh, you know, to stretch it
and make it work for them in anyway that the candle figure it
out.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (08:41):
Well, last night at two 22 in the
morning, she was tapping on myshoulder.
Again, she doesn't do thatoften.
It's been a.
Exactly a month since she's donethat.
She's tiny.
Let's have a sleepover.
I was like, oh my lord.
I said, it's 2.
22 in the morning.
We don't need to have asleepover.
I'm already asleep.

(09:03):
So I was like, okay.
And then like you, Duane, Iheard Duane in the back of my
head.
My baby's moving out.
So I went up to her room and Islept with her for the rest of
the night last night.
Because I know she won't ask meto do that very often.
So I did.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (09:17):
No.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090 (09:19):
Anyway.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090 (09:20):
Mm-Hmm.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (09:20):
that voice.
Yeah.
It's a, it flies by faster thanyou ever can imagine.
And you hear that also.
And, uh, boy, I'm there.
Am I there?
Okay.
So I'm going to read you anotherinterior design myth.
You ready?
Get rid of everything and bringin new stuff.

(09:40):
And this is what it says.
Contrary to popular belief, interior designers do not have
an agenda to eliminate all yourbelongings or replace them with
expensive items.
A good designer, We'llcollaborate with you to
understand your preferences,incorporating existing pieces

(10:01):
into your new design wheneverpossible.
The goal is to create a cohesiveand personalized, which I think
is a key keyword, personalizedspace that reflects your taste
and lifestyle.
Love all that, especially thatlast line, personalized, And
your taste, because the onething that I keep coming back to

(10:24):
is I would walk in and somebodyhas worked with an interior
designer and they've done stuffin that interior designer.
Uh, you could tell who did itbecause it was the same, same
old stuff.
And I'm like, did you pick thatout?
No, they just brought it to me.
No, that's brought to me.
Lord, were you not part of theprocess?
I'm not looking at you allsaying that you do that, by the

(10:46):
way.
But you do.
But,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_0 (10:49):
Whatever.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (10:53):
You know, this podcast has been a
useful tool.
In that, it was just days ago,we were talking about the whole
thing about, um, Artwork and,you know, personalized and
things like that.
So actually, uh, Kathy and Iwent, um, over to Cynthiana,

(11:13):
which is a little communityoutside of Paris and a lovely
client of mine I've been workingwith for just slightly over two
years and her husband, um, Gotbrain cancer at 65 and passed
away and of course, I didn'trealize until we had this
conversation last night that itwas only months that he had

(11:35):
passed away that I startedworking with her.
And, uh, so with that said, youknow, she's still healing,
right?
And she's still finding her way.
And, um.
Well, one of the things she hadasked for early on, probably
about a year into it, so about ayear ago, uh, that she wanted a,
uh, a painting at the bottom ofher staircase.

(11:57):
and she lives in this beautifulold two story historic house, in
Cynthia.
I mean, just gorgeous old house.
And, You know, my, my brokenrecord is, well, what gives you
joy?
What kind of artwork would youlike?
And she's like, I don't know.
Whatever you want me to,whatever you want to bring me.
It's like, no, no, no.
The whole thing.

(12:18):
Do you like the mountains?
Do you like the sea?
Do you like, she's, well, Idon't know.
Let me think about it.
And she shared this story withme last night, how she came upon
what piece of art that we endedup doing.
She said, so I put that on holdand we did some chairs in the
living room and other things andshe said so it was a few minutes
later and I was driving down theroad and she said Frank, that's

(12:41):
her husband in the past, startedtalking to me and she said he
was telling me that About, reliving this vacation that he
had, but so long story has he,before he passed away, he
planned out a vacation to go toEurope and then went to Italy.
And that was that was their lastexperience together.
Right?
And.

(13:02):
So the voice in their head Franksaying Italy and so it kept
popping up and she startedgoogling pictures when she got
back and there was, um, kind oflike a pergola that had flowers
on it and the background had thebeautiful ocean and she said I
walked past that with Frankmultiple times, when we're on
vacation in Italy and so shePrinted out the picture and she

(13:24):
was a former principal of aschool and she had, a student
and he's an artist and she sentin the picture and he painted
that moment for her.
And last night when I deliveredsomething else to her, Kathy and
I were there and I got to seethe framed painting for the
first time at the bottom of herstaircase.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (13:44):
Oh.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (13:46):
Now, let me tell you,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090 (13:47):
Mm-Hmm.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_ (13:48):
emotional, right?
And I asked her if I could tellher story because I want to do a
Facebook post.
And she's, and she said, youknow, a year ago, I'll probably
have to tell you no, she said, but, um, I can do it today.
I can do it today.
So it does go back to, Theseopportunities to get in people's
soul in their life and whenpeople say it's frivolous and
what you do is, you know, doesn't have importance.

(14:09):
I know last night was animportant night, right?
And it goes back to if you'relistening to the customer and
you personalize it, every timeshe walks past that, she's going
to think of Frank and thatmoment.
And it's just a picture.
It's just a picture, but it'sactually more than just a
picture.
It's her

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (14:28):
Well, it's a memory

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (14:29):
It's her moment.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (14:30):
Yeah.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (14:31):
It's a memory recall.
Yeah.
So that's what the good interiordesigners also do for me is they
bring things to you and theyhighlight them and they ask the
right questions.
What gives you joy?
That's what this podcast isabout.
This is what we're about.
This is what this, our store isabout.

(14:51):
It's not about selling.
It's about the things that wehelp you, um, acquire, giving
you that joy.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_0906 (15:00):
Right.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (15:00):
Yeah.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (15:01):
Bam, bam.
It's that

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (15:03):
Ooh, I

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (15:04):
The more you know.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09 (15:05):
sparkles just went

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_0 (15:06):
sparkled,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (15:11):
Oh, mercy.
Thanks for bringing some

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (15:14):
yes.
Yes.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_0 (15:16):
sparkled, sparkled, So I, I have never
said to somebody, get rid ofeverything.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (15:21):
No, I haven't either.
You know, and it's funny, I haveone client right now who, Is
building a, small house, smallerhouse because all of their kids
are gone, gone to college.
They don't need that fivebedroom, six and a half bath
house anymore.
So they're building a small.
Three bedroom, two bath house.

(15:44):
Um, and it was still,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (15:45):
I love that that's

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (15:46):
well, I mean, compared to what they're
coming from.
Yeah.
I mean, they're, they're comingfrom 6, 000 square feet and
going to 2, 500.
So that's still a large house.
Yes.
She said, I said, okay, let's gothrough your house and what are
we going to bring?
And she went.
I went, what?
She goes, I'm bringing picturesof my children because I don't

(16:09):
want my other house to look likethis house because I don't want
to remember it.
I was like, oh.
She said, although we had greatmemories here, she said, my kids
are making their own memoriesand that's what I need to fill
my new house with.
I went, Oh, okay.
And I've, I've never had that.
happen before, but it made sensewhen she said it.

(16:30):
I was like, oh, okay, so yeah, but you don't have to get rid of
everything.
I mean.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (16:36):
Lord, no.
I mean, if they come in, theysay they want

stuart_1_08-22-2024_0906 (16:38):
Right, if they elect to, yes.
But otherwise, I mean, you cancombine anything.
I mean, because if you'vealready done one of the houses
for them,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (16:47):
No, I have wanted to burn some
things, right?
Have you like, I love this causemy granny gave it to me.
And I was like, Oh, dear Lordhave mercy.
Granny had bad taste, but Istill work around it.
Yeah.
I still work around

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (17:01):
of got to,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (17:03):
I'll always say, um, you know, we
can, you can keep it.
Like, obviously there's aconnection to it.
Maybe we just won't use it inthis more of a, so usually most
of the time when I walk into aspace, it's always, they want to
the whole space.
They want to, they're doing itfor them, but they're also doing
it for guests.
Right?
Like they're, they're trying to,to make it a space that's.
welcoming and warm and, um,beautiful for them and for them

(17:27):
to share with their friends, andfamily.
And so they don't, they're fineputting it in the guest room or
upstairs in the hallway orsomewhere else.
They just want that.
So that's fine with me.
Cause I mean, I

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (17:38):
No, as long as it's in your, in your
world, as long as it's in yourworld, right, it doesn't have to
be prominent.
As long as, no, that's, that'scommon that, uh, it's like, no,
I don't have to have it in thefront living room, but as long
as it's in the house somewhere, and then I, you know, so the
challenge is then to how to, um,address it and how to highlight
it and truly pay respect onceit's said and done.

(18:01):
And that's, that's important.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (18:03):
Most of the time I'll always have
somebody to say, um, it'll gosomething like now.
I got this from blah blah blahblah, um, and they were really
special to me and so I do wantto keep it, but we don't have to
use it here if, if you don'tthink that it's right.
I'm like, okay, perfect.
We'll use this somewhere else.
Like, they give me, like, theytell me they're okay with that
answer.
I'm like,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (18:22):
They know

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (18:22):
that we're, They know the truth.
They do.
They do.
It's, yeah.
A

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (18:28):
uh, Jennifer and, uh, she had this,
Oh, uh, nightstand or whatever.
It was one of those little smalldressers that had like a little
mirror on it.
And it's kind of Victorianlooking.
You would put like one of those, pictures on it with the water,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (18:42):
Like a makeup stand or a wash stand,
an old wash stand.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024 (18:45):
watchstand.
That's it.
You know, so they're, they'reold and they're kind of just old
fashioned looking.
And it was her grandmother's andit was very important to her.
That's one of the few thingsthat she had inherited or
gotten, you know, through the, through the, through her life.
So it was very, very importantto her, but it just did not,
it's country, right?

(19:06):
And it just not, not anythingI'd ever want.
But I knew I had to make itwork.
And, uh, we were doing a guestbedroom and we're doing two twin
beds.
And I knew that that size wasfit as the, the oversized not
stand between the two beds.
And I said to her.
Um, can I paint this now at thetime I didn't tell her what

(19:29):
color I was wanting to do.
I just said, can I paint it?
We'll start with that.
And she's like, oh, no, can'tpaint that granny.
No, it's granny's oak piece.
And no, I can't paint that.
And I said, well, you do know,The look that we're trying to
create, right?
It's Serena and Lily andmonogrammed and, um, and you
know, all of that by this Oakthing in that room was not going

(19:51):
to work.
And, she said, no, I can't dothat.
And I said, look, I said, grannywouldn't care if it's painted or
not truthfully.
Right.
She just loves the fact that youlove it and it's important to
you and you're keeping it inyour house and that you want it.
And I said, cause.
You're just reinterpreting howto use it.
It gives her the joy.

(20:11):
The fact that you love it somuch, you're willing to keep it.
It's important to have it aroundyou.
She didn't care if you paint itright.
It's the fact that you'rekeeping it.
That's what you're keeping isthe memory.
And, uh, with that, she thoughtabout it for a little bit and
she said, yes.
And I said, so I want to takethe little Victoria mirror off
the back.
And now I want to paint it, uh,tomato red, high gloss lacquer.

(20:37):
I forget what's going to spinoff, uh, long story is, and we
post a picture of the bedroombecause it, we did use it, and
I, it matches the monogram and Ithink it turned out beautiful,
but I thought, oh lord, one dayI'm going to get killed.
But, um, I think Granny would bepleased to know that we kept,
kept it and we kept part of hermemory and, and the love of that

(21:01):
piece in the house.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:03):
You have one, Stuart?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:05):
I shared mine.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:06):
You don't?
Okay.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_09065 (21:07):
We've not painted anything tomato red.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:09):
I have not painted anything tomato
red.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:11):
I don't

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:12):
I did actually just paint a case
that I remember from a childthat was on the back porch of,
of the house.
I just painted it, lacquerblack.
Turned out good.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:24):
That counts.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:25):
So, yeah.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:26):
And for a client or for you?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:30):
it was something that was always in
every house we lived

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:32):
You can remember back to your
childhood?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (21:33):
Yeah.
The covered wagon kind ofshadowed it, but that was one
piece that we always took acrossthe prairie.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (21:41):
Yeah.
On

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:41):
This is okay.
Little Laura Ingalls right herewith us today.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_0906 (21:45):
Right.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (21:50):
about some floral design stuff.
How about that?
Some myths

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (21:53):
Tell us what you want us to

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (21:55):
Well, I think the first one that I'm,
and I know I've heard all threeof us say this to customers in
the store, or people makingarrangements that, you know,
it's about that there are designrules and that you're supposed
to follow them and, you know,Dwayne calls me the ultimate
real follower because I usuallyam a real follower.
although I like to blow upwhenever I can.
Um, but I've always tried to sayknow the rules and then know how

(22:20):
they work and why they work andthen break them when you want,
like, just break them becauselike, for example, using, you
have to use odd numbers.
Well, no, there are certaintimes, right?
Where I know, right?
There are certain times where,if you don't, if you may not
have your natural style, you maynot, you don't have it innate in
you, like what feels right, whatlooks right.

(22:41):
That's a good place to start.
Right.
But don't feel chained to theidea that you have to have three
of something or five ofsomething in an arrangement or
in a, in a vessel so that you'refollowing the rules, like that's
just complete nonsense, becauseI know a number of times I've
put like two of something in oneand it looks balanced and looks

(23:01):
perfect and you know, whatever.
And then someone will say, doyou need another one?
So there's three, so there'sodd.
And I was like, no, it looksright.
It looks fine.
It's beautiful.
So don't, I think for me.
Know that those, those kinds ofelements exist for a guideline.
And again, once you understandguidelines and understand why,
when it's all about balance andproportion and all those kinds

(23:23):
of things, then screw it and dowhat feels right.
I mean, it.
shouldn't look, it.
shouldn't look like a hairstylefrom Fraggle Rock once you're
done, but you know, it should,it should, you know, it should
feel right for you.
And that's, that's always drivesme crazy.
Uh

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (23:41):
I always, um, think, Wow, I guess
there's an audience of 35 andyounger that thinks flower
arrangements are for yourgranny's house and you're right
and Then when we have anopportunity to work with
somebody of a younger age Theygo.
Oh, well, it looks real.
I was like, yeah.
Yeah Quit buying shit for XXXXXXand XXXXX XXXXX, you know And

(24:05):
you you're getting teal coloredpeonies the size of somebody's
head because you know, that'swhat people want Nature gives
you if you buy pretty things andwe do pretty flowers, uh, that
you'll realize, Oh, that, thatlooks real in the idea of like
what you always do, Jeremy, you'll, you'll say you like,
you, you like to just gather andyou like to get arrangements and

(24:25):
you're going outside and theidea is like you're cutting from
the garden and you just.
Plop three or thrive or seven or12 or something in the vase.
And it just is that simple.
And that's what we've adaptedto.
I think that's some of thereasons, uh, our flower
arrangements and what I do andyou do and Joe does and
everybody else is we try to makearrangements that look gathered

(24:48):
and you don't put a flower hereand a flower here and a flower
here and follow the formula.
Uh, I, a lot of times I'll makean arrangement and if I don't
have guidance and they don'tcare, I'll do.
Clusters of flowers.
And I don't have it like justone spatter throughout, right?
And that's what makes it feel,I'll say on trend, not trendy.
That's different on trend andcurrent and gathered.

(25:10):
And that's how you take silk,Chinese flowers that are very
good, by the way, very goodones, and we make it look real
because, um, I think ourarrangements are some of the
best out there and I'm not beingcocky, I really do believe that.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (25:25):
I agree.
I think there's some reallypretty ones.
And you know, I should havementioned this before with, um,
a lot of times people when theyhear, like, they'll read a
design rule and they'll likestick to it.
Like, you know, carry it closeto their chest because again,
they don't know.
We have a blog or a blog on thewebsite that I'll put down in
the, in the show notes.
And, yeah.
It is a, it's basically aformula.

(25:47):
If you don't know what you'redoing as far as like what
flowers to combine, right, orwhat stems to combine, it kind
of walks you through, okay, thisis how it breaks down.
And if you put these kind ofelements together, um, it, you
know, nine times out of ten,it's, it's the perfect
combination.
So I'll make sure to put thatdown there.
And it's just a good littlegeneral rule just to be like,
okay, knowing how much to mixand how much, how much not to

(26:10):
mix.
Cause.
We all know we've seen peoplethat brought up 300 worth of
flowers to make an arrangementthat's going to go in a 5x5, you
know, container.
Um, and then we've also seensomebody bring up two stems
that's trying to make somethingthat's going to go in a 36 inch
container.
So, um, knowing the elements ofwhat to mix and how much will
help you, I think.
So I'll put that down in theshow notes.

(26:30):
That's really helpful.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (26:32):
One thing I'll circle back to is if
you want to try and make anarrangement on your own, and
this is not your skill set, justbuy massed out something, right?
Right now we're getting readyfor fall, buy six, I won't even
do an odd number, do sixsunflowers and stick it in your
vase, right?
Or six brownie mossy greenhydrangeas.

(26:55):
And I'm okay with that.
Like I'd rather that than youjust mix a hot mess together.
Cause I love that little, justbundle.
You bought a bouquet and justdropped it in a

stuart_1_08-22-2024_0906 (27:03):
right.
Repetition.
It's just repetition.
Just like

dwayne_1_08-22-2024 (27:06):
Repetition.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (27:07):
buy that bundle of sunflowers from
Trader Joe's.
It's the same thing.
So it's just gonna

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (27:11):
Mm hmm.
Mm hmm.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (27:12):
and not the weekend.
So,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (27:15):
You got it.
Yeah.
Just take that and run with it.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (27:19):
this brings me to my ick, and it's,
one of the things thatfrustrates me to no end on,
social media, whatever it is,and, you know, people are always
excited to share, something thatthey've learned, with others
because they are just so excitedto tell somebody else.
The problem is when.

(27:40):
What they're sharing is completeand utterly fucking wrong.
Right?
So this.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (27:47):
of Like pictures of

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (27:49):
What I am specifically talking about,
and there's, there's more

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (27:53):
Let's see your half eaten pork chop.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (27:55):
Okay.
So when we are making a freshflower arrangement, if it is
going in a glass container, aclear glass cube, we can use
multiple things to try to holdthe stems in place, but an old
florist hack.
Okay.
And I won't even say a hack.
It's just a tool was a clearstrapping tape that you used on

(28:15):
the top of the piece of glass.
That you can create a gridstructure.
You can make like a tic tac toe, right?
Or you could even increase itmore to make it.
It was, so it was more than justnine spots and you could put a
piece around the very top, toreally hold everything in.
It's got a special adhesive.
It works pretty well when it'swet.
It's clear.
You can see through it.
Once you put stems in it, youwill never see it.

(28:37):
Okay.
So that's the base of what thereal tip is right using clear
floral tape to do this what Ikept seeing on instagram and
tiktok were people taking clearScotch tape and putting that on
the top of the face And tryingto then put flowers inside.

(29:02):
Okay, here's the deal That tapedoes not unless you get like the
steel reinforced kind of wrap agift it first of all It's not
going to keep it warm Right.
The second it's going to getwet,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (29:12):
It's done.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (29:13):
it gives, right.
It is, it's gone.
It's gone.
And so I saw time after timeafter time of people taking this
Scotch tape, trying to make agrip.
First of all, also how wide isthe Scotch tape?
It's like three quarters of aninch wide.
Like, you know, it's big.
Right?
So now they've, Gummed up thetop of their container, trying
to put this grid structure in.

(29:34):
And so then I see all thesepeople trying to use it, showing
how well it works.
And they get six stems in andthe entire grid starts giving
away and it collapses on itself.
And of course, now they'vestarted taking a time lapse
video.
So they just keep continuing tofinish it.
And I get this a great tip.
I'm like, No.
this, it's, it's like, oh myGod.

(29:55):
So that, that's my, that's mine.
I don't, it just, I don't,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (30:02):
And what do you, where do you watch
these fools at

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (30:04):
On TikTok

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (30:05):
on social.
The people share it on socials, like, you know, here's a tip.
Um, and,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_0906 (30:10):
that's the difference between you

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09 (30:12):
followed by

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (30:13):
I just scroll past those things.
Yes, because I'm like,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (30:16):
chop.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (30:17):
you know how I've said about people
that I hate the person that'sthe smartest person in the room.
Right.
And I'm a collaborator and Iwant to work together.
I can almost assure you 90percent of the time I'm going to
scroll past because I know thatI'm smarter than 90 percent of
those dumb asses making stupidvideos on TikTok and whatever it
is.
I just keep on scrolling likeno.

(30:38):
I am old and hateful.
I can teach you more than youwill ever know.
Next!

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (30:42):
well, that's, and that's the
frustrating part for me is thatpeople have put the time
together to put this out there.
And the thing is, is they don'tknow.
And you know, the reason whythey are doing it is because
they've seen somebody else doit.
Right?
They've seen somebody else useScotch Tape and they're like,
Oh, that's a great tip.
I'm going to share it with mypeeps.
Right?
And then

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (31:01):
You know, it's like history
repeating itself

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (31:04):
Oh, God.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (31:05):
ha ha.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (31:05):
Read a book.
Quit banning a book.
Read a book.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (31:09):
I mean, just do some real
research.
Like, take a second and Google.
I mean, Lord have mercy.
It's just

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (31:17):
I wouldn't call that an ick.
I'd call that stupidity.
But that's okay.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (31:21):
So the ick is more people sharing
things that I just that you knoware just like,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_0906 (31:26):
Wrong.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (31:28):
So wrong.
And like, I saw one one timewhere the hydrangeas they
bought.
At, the grocery store orwhatever, they got him home and
They didn't cut fresh ends onthe ends.
And so they were really like, they, they wilted.
Right.
And then they were like, let meteach you a trick.
Spray hairspray.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_0906 (31:45):
there.
Here's your opportunity to tellpeople really what to do.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (31:49):
I am.
I'm going to tell them.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_09065 (31:51):
okay, okay, I'm

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (31:51):
Yeah.
So they're like, let me show youa trick.
Take hairspray and spray it onwater and then submerge,
submerge your hydrangea head andit will fix it.
And I'm like, the hairspray isnot necessary.
Like there's no need forhairspray in this.

(32:12):
Literally.
You cut the end, get a fresh tipon it, and then submerge the,
the poor wilted thing into yourkitchen sink, leave it, you can
leave it overnight, come backthe next day, it's fine.
It will be perfectly plump andbeautiful.
Where the hell did hairspraycome in?
Like, did Vidal Sassoon try tosell, they're just trying to
sell more hairspray?

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (32:32):
a hydrangea, for example.
It's like a straw, right?
It's

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (32:35):
They

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (32:36):
it's a woodsy straw.
It's a straw.
And if you, If, if it's sealed, right, it doesn't easily absorb
the water, but if you cut itoff, the little tip of it, it
reopens the pores, the stem, andit pulls the water into it, and
therefore it gets to the head ofthe flower and it plumps it up.
This is just not that hard tofigure out.

(32:56):
And.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_0906 (32:59):
reason why you submerge it.
Like, it will, they'll, they'llabsorb water in through that
way.
No hairspray is needed.
Save your Tresemme.
I just, I don't know.
It just, it just amazes me everyday what I've seen.
Um,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (33:15):
move

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (33:16):
Okay, one

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (33:16):
You ready?
One more.
Okay.
Everything must match.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (33:23):
I have that written down on my
thing.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_09065 (33:25):
Okay, so they say interior designer
myths include matchingeverything.
The notion that everything in aroom must match perfectly is a
myth that stifles creativity.
Interior design is aboutcreating harmony, harmony, and
balance, not uniformity.
Skilled designers know how tomix styles, textures, and colors

(33:47):
to achieve a visually appealingand cohesive look.
A well curated, Mix of elementsadds character and personality
to a space.
Hmm.
Curated.
Hear that word, kids.
We've said this a thousandtimes.
A room doesn't happen overnight.
It evolves.

(34:08):
A house keeps growing and youkeep adding.
You keep tweaking and you keepmoving.
Quit buying stuff all the time.
What you bought, you love.
If it's in the living room, moveit to the dining room.
What's in the dining room?
Move it to the bedroom.
Keep shopping in your house.
You don't quit buying crap allthe time.
Buy what you love and buy itfrom us.

(34:28):
Cause we do get flowers.
But then the best, I always say,um, mine is I don't want to
broil your moment.
Right.
I don't, I don't want you to goin and buy the whole bedroom
set.
I just hate everything aboutthat.

(34:49):
Hate.
What you got for me boys?
What do you think?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (34:52):
Mix and match.
Yeah, no, I mean, that, when wewere, when you were reading
that, I was thinking, I waslike, okay, my front sitting
room.
Like I can count nine differentpatterns in there, not including
the artwork right now, but it

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (35:08):
So anything in your front living
room, did you buy any one thingat the two things rather at the
same time?
Or is everything you've acquiredand found at different times in
your life?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (35:20):
the only thing I bought at the same
time were two lamps and twomirrors.
Cause I needed them to mirrorimage on the wall.
Other than that, everything elsein there is from, my first
house, there's things from myparents house.
There's two things from mygrandparents house.
So yeah, it's a very collectedroom.

(35:41):
Curated, as you say.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (35:42):
And that's why I love that room,
right?
I don't, I didn't know why, thecolor first is stunning.
That color, you're so good atcolor.
And that color in that frontliving room is a stunning color.
Um, but I always look at thatroom and I wonder why.
it just looks rich.
Well, it's because it evolved.
It's curated.
And it happened over time.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (36:02):
Yeah.
That was a whole

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (36:04):
I read,

stuart_1_08-22-2024_09065 (36:04):
Yeah.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (36:04):
I read into what you read, Dwayne,
even further than, you know, collecting pieces at different
times, from different places.
Even if it's at the same time,if you get it from different
places, right?
Like, you've mixed and matched.
What I hear in that is, not allyour metal finishes need to

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (36:18):
No.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (36:19):
You don't have to do matchy matchy
furniture.
You don't have to do matchymatchy fabrics.
Everything doesn't have to bethe same.
Introducing colors and texturesand patterns can make it really
interesting.
And can add a ton of depth to aspace.
Um, and that's just by youfinding that fun pillow that you
found at a vintage store thathas this

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_09065 (36:41):
Well, tell us, I was at Jeremy's house
a couple of weeks ago.
We were getting ready to go outof town.
Uh, would you like to share withthe audience the pillow that you
felt em, emboldened andnecessary to show me?
Now it was a gift.
It was a gift, but the one thingthat he had to point out to show
me that he had to show me, uh,this new pillow or this pillow

(37:03):
he got for a gift atChristmastime on the bench in
the front living room.
It has words printed on it.
Um,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (37:10):
It just has a nice little word
knitted in it.
It's all tone on tone.
So it's very tastefully done.
It's in cream.
Uh, And it's just a fun little,um, you know the, yeah, it's a
fun job.
Well, the, I didn't tell youthis was a gift from my friend's
mother for Christmas.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_09065 (37:28):
Well, I look at the pillow and I go,
well, hi, look at that.
I just didn't know that was evensomething that existed in the
world or needed to exist in theworld, by the way.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09065 (37:38):
Well, I walked, uh, when I went in the
room one day and it was kind ofturned over and I was like, And
I thought, you know, maybeGracie had got up and knocked it
over.
I was like, why is this pillowknocked over?
He goes, because my mom iscoming over.
And I thought maybe I wouldn'tgreet her right inside the door
with that.
And I was like, oh, okay,

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (37:54):
my God.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (37:55):
It's just there, you know, whatever.

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_09065 (37:57):
There was a house that I did a number
of years ago and they were, having a party and the guy
collected, art and funky, funky, funky art.
And, they, and I didn't realizethis was part of an art
installation.
So there's these three pegs outin the foyer and it had, was it
horse bridles?
Is that the thing that's right?
And they had the, the, uh, Andit had the brass name plates,

(38:18):
you know, very Kentuckysomething.
And I really, I was like, thishouse is downtown, so it's not
on the farm.
But I thought, you know, maybehe had the horses or something.
And so, we getting ready for thepeople to come.
And, I'm standing there readingthe names on the, plates.
And, uh, the first plate says,And I went, uh, that's, that's

(38:43):
odd.
And then the second plate saidxxxxxxxxx or something like
that.
And I went, well, that's veryodd.
And then the third onexxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
And I went, oh dear Lord, no.
And so I went to the partycoordinator and I said, Jan,

(39:03):
come, come and read these.
And she's like, uh huh.
Uh huh.
And then she went.
Huh.
Oh Lord.
I said, uh huh.
And she said, I think I'm goingto take those down and just
store those away before thecompany comes.
And I said, that might be a goodidea.
That was a very unusual artinstallation.
I have to say,

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (39:21):
You know what?
Whatever floats your about whenit comes to

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_09 (39:24):
whatever floats your boat.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_09 (39:26):
Whatever

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090653 (39:26):

What did we learn from today?

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (39:30):

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (39:32):
do that that rules can be helpful.

stuart_1_08-22-2024_090653 (39:38):
They can be guidelines.

jeremy_1_08-22-2024_090653 (39:40):
They can, they can be really good
luck guidelines.
However, do your researchunderstand why these things are
said, and then be open enough torealize what works for you and
do that.
And if you need help, ask forhelp.
And don't be

dwayne_1_08-22-2024_090 (39:57):
