"Write what you know." That's one of the most familiar and common pieces of writing advice -- I probably heard it a hundred times when I was first starting out as a novelist.
There is a new book titled Write What You Don't Know and its co-author, Allegra Huston, is an intriguing woman who began her own writing journey with a memoir, titled Love Child, and has since written other books that include a novel and nonfiction resources for editing and writing. Allegra's editing career included working with Booker and Nobel Prize-winning authors, and her teaching career has recently put her at the Iowa Writers' Workshop giving a Master class to graduate students.
In this interview, we discuss the beginning of her desire to write her memoir, her thoughts on stoking and weathering the "imaginative storm", and why writers should stretch to write what they don't know.
