I'm your host, corinne O'Flynn,and this week we're talking
about making meaningful changein our lives.
That's the energy theme for thenext few weeks, and I'm calling
it Empower your Vision, and Ijust love the energy of this.
It makes me want to startmaking lists and getting things
started, you know, because we'rerolling into the end of Q2 and
(00:29):
into the start of Q3 and there'snothing better than a new month
to start thinking about, youknow, the future and planning
ahead.
And but today I want to focuson the one thing that just might
be the most important thing weneed to do when we're thinking
about chasing new dreams andempowering our vision, and that
(00:50):
is releasing old patterns.
Old patterns are the bane of anynew vision, and it's the reason
why New Year's resolutionsnever stick.
It's why many of us have a hardtime sticking with a new
workout schedule.
It's why I can't stop puttingsugar in my tea, right?
Old patterns are what cause usto get stuck.
(01:13):
We lose momentum and that's whywe continue to repeat and retry
, repeat and retry.
Even then, we can't seem to getover the hump.
But, you know, all is not lost,because we can look forward
with hope because we have a plan.
Right Awareness is the firststep toward changing anything
and you know, it's reallyimportant that we understand the
(01:36):
impact of old patterns that weare lost in, that no longer
serve us, you know.
So the first question is whatare these patterns?
And, of course, a pattern is aroutine.
You know, it's a habit that wefall into, often without
thinking, and these can bephysical things, like having
coffee at eight o'clock in themorning every day, or, if you're
(01:56):
like me, reaching for the sugarwith one hand as I pour the
water into my tea mug with theother hand.
Or maybe they're emotional.
Maybe it's like gettinginstantly frustrated because one
of your kids leaves their shoesin the middle of the floor, or
getting defensive when certainconversations activate you
predictably.
You know, recognizing thepatterns that we have is crucial
(02:21):
, because the way that we behavein response to these patterns
can shape our decisions, it canimpact our outcomes and often,
with negative patterns, it canlimit our potential right, and
you know, negative patternsespecially can keep us stuck.
We can get stuck in a rut, bothpersonally and professionally.
(02:41):
And so some patterns, somecommon patterns that need
breaking oftentimes areprocrastination, right, delaying
tasks until the very lastminute and that can lead to, you
know, increased stress andreduced quality of work.
You know, and as entrepreneurs,we often procrastinate on tasks
that we find daunting orunpleasant, and you know I'm
(03:02):
going to raise my hand on thatone because that's definitely
something that I am guilty of.
Another one that I am familiarwith is overcommitting.
You know, saying yes to toomany projects or commitments.
You know this leads tooverwhelm and this inability to
focus effectively on any onesingle task, and that can cause
missed deadlines and lots ofmissed opportunities, and that
(03:23):
can cause missed deadlines andlots of missed opportunities.
Another one that I call my oldfriend is perfectionism.
You know, spending a lot oftime perfecting details.
This is often done at theexpense of progress and, while
quality is important, excessiveperfectionism can prevent
completion.
It can stall stuff right in itstracks, and you know nobody
(03:46):
wants that.
Another habit is neglectingself-care.
Right when we prioritize workat the expense of our health and
wellness, this leads us toburnout and reduced productivity
.
You know, and we also, asentrepreneurs, we work long
hours and we sacrifice sleep andexercise and proper nutrition.
And you know that is also abyproduct of procrastination,
(04:10):
overcommitting and perfectionism, because when we procrastinate
or overcommit or we commit toperfectionism, we then will find
ourselves running right upagainst deadlines, which, you
know, the first thing that wedrop is self care.
So poor time management isanother one.
Failing to prioritize taskseffectively leads to inefficient
work time right, and asentrepreneurs we can really
(04:33):
struggle with that because wefind a difficulty distinguishing
between urgent and importanttasks.
And so, if you know, ifeverything is important and
everything is urgent, thennothing is important and nothing
is urgent.
And so you know, managing ourtime properly is vital to our
success.
But poor time management can bea habit.
(04:56):
It's often just a pattern thatwe're stuck in.
And this other one I wassurprised to see it on the list,
but it was resistance todelegation being unable to hand
tasks off to others, beingunable to ask for help, either
due to trust issues or beliefthat nobody can do it as well as
(05:16):
we can.
That hints on someperfectionism stuff too, but
this can cause limitations inour business scalability and in
our personal bandwidth, andagain, that connects back to the
lack of self-care.
The over-reliance onmultitasking is an insidious
(05:38):
pattern that I think thatthere's been a lot of talk over
recent years.
You know multitasking isactually a myth.
It's not something that'sactually happening, we're just
juggling tasks in our brain andwe've become really efficient at
doing that effectively.
Or you know what we think iseffectively because we're seeing
results.
But the truth is that, you know, trying to handle more than one
(06:00):
thing at a time causes usreduce our efficiency because it
costs us focus and again, onits surface it feels it seems
like it's efficient but it's not, and it leads to mistakes and
less effectiveness, which thenbites back in that need for
perfectionism, because we'renever going to get quality work
(06:22):
if we continue to multitask anddemand multitasking from our
brain, which you know it's justnot going to work.
So, avoidance of networking thisis something that I think that
COVID has exacerbated in theworld, because we've really come
to appreciate working from homeand staying home and you know
(06:46):
that whole pants optional thingwhere we're working remotely.
But you know, if we avoidnetworking opportunities, you
know we're going to miss out andthat's a pattern.
That is a habit that we canrecognize and we can break.
And if it is like it's not apattern for everybody, this is a
list of potential patterns.
You know there are some thingsthat we do that are not habits
(07:09):
or patterns, but it's actuallydone, you know, thoughtfully and
intentionally.
And that's not what we'retalking about here.
What we're talking about isthis avoidance of networking and
this unwillingness to connectand undervaluing the power of
networking, and, again, this canlimit us in our business and
(07:32):
also with finding clients andother peers in our sphere that
can help us, you know, grow ourbusiness and grow our energy.
And, you know, one of the mostvaluable things that I have in
my business is my mastermindgroup, and that is done through
networking.
And you know, if you're feelinga lack of that in your business
(07:55):
today, maybe this is somethingthat's a pattern for you that
might, you know, demand someexploration.
The next one I have on my listis ignoring customer feedback,
and this is one of those thingsthat it doesn't really feel like
a pattern, but it is definitelya behavior, that, because we
don't want to look at complaints, we don't want to look at our
(08:17):
shortcomings, we don't want tolook at the things where we
dropped the ball.
And, you know, failing to dothat and mindfully avoiding it,
like making it a pattern, youknow, can prevent us from
improving, it can prevent usfrom innovating, and I have so
many examples of this in mybusiness, where something
(08:41):
happens and you get negativefeedback from a client and you
didn't even see it as apotential pitfall, but now it's
like, oh, I don't ever want thatto happen again.
And so what you do, what I doin that situation is I build a
new system, I change the stepsin my protocol so that I make
(09:01):
sure that, if it's becausesomebody felt like they fell
through the cracks, I will makesure that I have an additional
touch point for myself to remindmyself to reach out more and
connect.
You know, connect more and bemore mindful about the way that
I'm interacting with people inmy business.
Or it could be that, you know, aball was dropped and you didn't
(09:24):
even know.
I remember years ago in myauthor business, I had spent all
this time creating this emailautomation for this big
promotion that I was doing.
And I had this you know, gohere to get the new, the first
free chapters of my book, andyou know you can download it for
free and get it in there beforeanybody else.
And I spent a week developingthis email autoresponder and I
(09:48):
launched my promotion and I hadeverything going.
And you know guess who forgotto turn on the autoresponder and
the feedback from from myreaders was like, hey,
something's wrong here.
Oh my gosh, what's?
I didn't get my thing.
And it's like oh you know.
But if my insistence was to,you know, ignore feedback from
(10:10):
people, ignore the complaints, Iwould never have checked on
that from people.
Ignore the complaints, I wouldnever have checked on that.
And so you can bet that I nowhave a step by step process when
I'm creating email sequencesfor new promotions, that testing
that whole thing on myself ispart of the deal.
So we learn how to iterate, welearn how to innovate when we
pay attention to the negativesthat come through feedback in
(10:31):
our business.
And so if you find that that issomething that you struggle
with, you know that's a placefor exploration.
And the last one is about yourfinances.
You know financialmismanagement being unwilling or
unable or afraid to reallyfocus on the things that you
need financially in yourbusiness can cost you enormously
(10:53):
.
And you know, as businesses aremoving more and more online, we
have all kinds of things thatmove beyond taxes.
You know how do we manage cashflow?
How do we manage our budget?
How do we budget for expenses?
How do we know if we're in theblack and how do we scale our
business responsibly?
How do we make sure that wehave money in the account that
(11:16):
we need to have it in in orderto pay all of our bills?
You know, I know that this isone of those things that years
ago, I struggled with and Iavoided dealing with my finances
at any cost.
And you know, sitting down withan accountant and learning
about something like ProfitFirst, for example, I'm actually
going to be attending a classon the Profit First accounting
(11:39):
system because that's somethingthat I want to do in my business
, and I found out about anupcoming class through
networking, through a friend.
So, again, all of thesedifferent things that we might
shy away from, we might have aspatterns in our business, can
cost us in ways that we don'teven know, like we don't know
what we don't know, and a lot ofthe things that we're fighting
(12:02):
with are in our heads.
So, you know, the things thatwe do, that are patterns, that
are habits that are costing us,really do need to be cleared out
of the way so that we can stepforward and empower our vision
right Again.
Bringing it back to the theme.
(12:23):
The theme right now is empoweryour vision.
So what can you do to empoweryour vision?
And the first step is likewhere am I?
Where am I holding myself back?
Where am I putting up theroadblocks?
So the first step is to becomea detective, right?
How do I identify and thenbreak these patterns?
When you spot yourself in themidst of a pattern, stop and say
(12:43):
, oh okay, what's going on here?
Where does this feeling arisein my body?
Did something happen thatcaused me to fall into this
pattern?
Notice, you know.
Do you feel anxious?
Do you feel distracted?
Do you feel upset?
You know, really, dig deep andask what is what is really
triggering this?
(13:04):
Is this something that somebodysaid?
Is this the actions of somebodyelse?
Is it a particular time of day?
Is it, you know, related toeating or not eating?
Is it related to getting enoughsleep?
Is it maybe a specific type oftask, you know, or maybe this
thing is pulling on a deeperthread that is connecting to a
(13:25):
limiting belief, and I have astory to share with you about
that, you know.
But once we identify thepattern, the way to break that
pattern is to really start smalland change one thing at a time
and be really mindful and youknow, for example, if
procrastination is your pattern.
Try changing up the way that youhandle deadlines Like maybe you
(13:46):
set an earlier deadline ormaybe you chunk your project
into smaller segments instead ofthe one big task and hold
yourself accountable.
Find yourself an accountabilitybuddy who can keep you on task,
and just talking about yourgoals and the hurdles that
you're facing with somebody elsecan really make a big
difference.
And I want to tell you about atime when I realized all the
(14:10):
ways in which one of my habitswas getting in the way of
everything for me and that waskind of under the overcommitting
tab.
It was discovering that I was apeople pleaser.
And when I realized all thedifferent ways in which being a
people pleaser stole time andenergy from me as somebody who
(14:33):
always struggled with saying yesto every request, meaning I
said yes to every request.
You know that pattern ranreally deep and it was old and
it had really super strong roots, that you know it wasn't easy
as just saying no more.
Right, I had to do this big deepdive, I had to do this big
exploration and it didn't takelong before I was like, okay,
(14:57):
peeling back the onion.
Peeling back the onion.
What's underneath this?
Why am I doing this?
What is pushing me toward that?
And it was fear, right, it wasfear that I would disappoint
other people.
It was fear that if I didn't dothis thing that they needed,
they wouldn't like me.
Or, before they could even askme, it was me jumping in to do
(15:17):
the thing so that I would beliked.
Right, that was a big one forme and you know.
But the moment that I recognizedit as a pattern, I started to
understand where those triggerspopped up and what those
situations activated in me.
And I started to pay attentionto that stress and that anxiety
and where it lived in my body.
(15:39):
And I worked first todeactivate that stress response
right, I worked to settle mynervous system.
And then I found myself in thiswhole new world, right, this
world where I could say no andit didn't mean that everybody
was going to break up with me.
And it was this whole new world, right, this world where I
could say no and it didn't meanthat everybody was going to
break up with me.
And it was this whole new worldwhere I had more time and I had
more energy to use in that timeon the things that I wanted to
(16:02):
work on right.
So the outcome of identifyingthis pattern of people-pleasing
caused a huge boost in my ownself-confidence.
It increased my own sense ofself-worth, it allowed me to
take pride in my ability to setand hold boundaries and there
was a whole lot less stress inmy everyday because I realized
(16:24):
that this pattern was not just atime management problem.
It wasn't because I had toomuch to do, it was because I was
taking on things and I wastaking on things for all the
wrong reasons.
So you know, I encourage you todo that kind of reflection.
When you come across a patternin your life, you know, think
(16:44):
about, you know what patterns inyour life, in your business, in
your day-to-day might beholding you back.
And is there one thing that youcould change that might make
that pattern less powerful?
Pick one thing that you'veidentified and adjust one action
.
If we're going to make changes,small, incremental change is so
(17:06):
much more powerful and so muchmore sustainable over time.
So when you identify a pattern,take one action, one action to
correct it each day and see whathappens.
You know you might findyourself in a whole new world
where you have more time andmore energy and more joy.
You know, just because youstarted to pay attention and
(17:28):
really be truthful with yourselfabout the costs associated to
sticking with this habit,sticking with this pattern.
You know you can keep a journal, you could use a notes app or a
habit tracker to track how youkeep track of these things, you
know, and also track your mood,see how you feel as you change
(17:50):
through this habit and see howit feels in your body and, of
course, see how it impacts yourproductivity, because the power
here you know it, really itcannot be overstated.
So, yeah, that's what I wantedto talk to you about, because we
are embarking on this whole newtheme right now of empower your
(18:13):
vision, and we talked about howbreaking old patterns is the
first step toward clearing theway to achieving your goals.
Right, it's really crucial tobe realistic and you know we
have to be as realistic aboutourselves as we are realistic
about our goals.
Our goals need to be achievable.
(18:33):
They need to be, you know,something that we can get to,
and the way that we know we canget to them is by being really
honest and making sure that weidentify and we become aware of
those patterns where we are theones that are being the
(18:53):
roadblock.
So, as you reflect on yourpatterns and look forward into
empowering your vision, I have atool for you if you're

perfect time to start reallygetting clear on what we want to
achieve for June.
This is the perfect time tostart really getting clear on
(19:14):
what we want to achieve for thesecond half of the year.
You know we're out of all thisenergy of, of mercury,
retrograde and and all thisstagnation and all this
heaviness and we can now moveforward.
You know and we can.
We can make plans again and wecan act.
