Speaker 1 (00:33):
Keep the kids away, but I don't think every one
of you is doing it, So I'm gonna have to
do something to curb this behavior. If you don't stop,
maybe I'll tell your kids where sin is real address this,
or maybe I'll tell them where babies come from, or
how to get a hold of the Easter Buddy and
the toothberry, or maybe I'll just tell them why the
mailman always brings them birthday presents and why Daddy is really.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Mad about it.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
So remember, keep the kids away from the adult material
and enjoy the show. This is the Carolina storytelling.

It's spooky season, folks, AND's great time to talk about
scary movies. But I'm not really a scary movie podcast.
So tonight we're going to talk about cursed movies. This
is the Carolina Storyteller. I'm your storyteller, Jonathan Phoenix. Hollywood
has its fair share of dark and macabre that's haunted

(02:22):
it over the years. But these films that we're going
to cover tonight, and a couple of families actually that
we're going to talk about are literally some of Hollywood's
most well known and believed curses. Now what do I
mean by curses? Just so that we can get that
out there, that means that events that have happened surrounding

(02:45):
these celebrities and these productions that have made people wonder
with the chain of events and how they happened and
how coincidentally they were was there some kind of paranormal
energy behind it? Now, as always, folks, before we get
into the stories, I want to remind you that you
can support this show by going over to patreon dot

all the advertisements. You can just listen to the story.
So let's get into it. We're gonna start by going
all the way back to the nineteen fifties, and we're
actually gonna start with instead of starting with a movie,

(03:28):
we're gonna start with a character, and not just any
character either, one that exemplifies the American dream, one that
stands up for the red and blue and well yellow
because he doesn't have whiteness costume. I'm talking about Superman,
the Man of Steel, one of the first superheroes. Now

(03:53):
you're going Superman's cursed, well, believe it or not, a
lot of people believe that the role of Superman may
be curt The first few actors that tried to portray
Superman did get injured in one way or another, but
most famously, George Reeves, who played Superman in the nineteen fifties,
in nineteen fifty nine died of a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Now you may not be familiar with the name of.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
George Reeves, but if you fast forward just twenty some
odd years into the future, the character was played by
his son, none other than Christopher Reeves. Now, Christopher Reeves,
you might remember, suffered a horse riding accident just after
the filming of Superman four that left him tragically paralyzed.

(04:41):
And even though he was able to still do some
things with Hollywood, including appearing on the television show Smallville,
he did die from complications from that accident several years later.
So that led people to start thinking maybe the role
has a little bit of an issue. I mean, they
weren't able to re get another Superman movie to go

(05:02):
for almost twenty years. You got to think Superman four
came out in nineteen eighty something and Superman Returns didn't
come out until almost two thousand and four, and the
Brandon Roth led to film really didn't do so well.
And to mention all of the gloves that had happened
in between. It really started people wondering. But since then

(05:24):
we've seen the Man of Steel return in very successful ways,
portrayed by Henry Cavill. Of course, Brandon Roth portrayal is classic,
and now we have the Superman and Lois show that
seems to show that maybe the character's curse has gone away,
at least for now, but who knows. Next up, I

(05:45):
want to talk about a particular family, and this one
is close to me because it is involving one of
my favorite movies.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
Let's talk about the Lee family, Bruce and Brandon. Okay,
So Bruce Lee.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
Of course entered the scene in the sixties and seventies,
and it is literally just an amazing martial artist, amazing father,
and an amazing actor. And his movies were just top notch,
and he was bringing things to the scene that way
in America really didn't see in American movies before, so
we were loving it. And then on the set of

(06:21):
one of his movies, after getting the headache and taking
what he thought was an aspirin, Bruce Lee tragically passed away.
Now a lot of people thought that old Bruce may
have been murdered. Some people claimed that it was a
conspiracy because he had brought techniques and secrets that weren't
supposed to be taught into his movies, and that he

(06:43):
was crossing cultural boundaries that weren't supposed to be crossed.
But nobody expected what would happen several years later when
his son Brandon would become an actor. In his second movie,
Brandon was playing the lead character of Eric Draven, the

(07:06):
Crow and what was, in my book, one of the
best comic book superhero movies to be produced from the nineties.
And during the filming of this movie, in one scene,
gunn was accidentally loaded with a live round and Brandon
Lee was shot and killed on set.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
It was a very tragic accident, or was it.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
It was believed that something had happened with Bruce Lee
that carried on to his children, and it was so
harshly believed that even his daughter Shannon Lee, actually stayed
out of the public eye for a long period of
time because she didn't want to be drug into it.
Now we don't know necessarily that it's true. Nobody's really

(08:00):
hurt Shannon Lee, but it still did leave a mark
on Hollywood, and of course both of their lives were
cut so short, and there were so many movies that
they could have made that could have just been awe inspiring.
Now let's get into movies that are cursed. We're going
to start with a very classic one, Rebel without a Cause.

(08:23):
I know some of you don't know this nineteen sixties film,
but you might know the name of the actor, James Dean,
the heart throb that had such a short career in
the late fifties. Now he fronted this coming of age
movie with Salmoneo and Natalie Wood as teenage outcast who
had bonded over a world where the parents really just

(08:44):
didn't understand. Now, I'm sure anyone under the age of
twenty understands where these characters were coming from. They identify
with it because guess what, parents just don't understand? Will
Smith wrote it, just deal with it, Okay. Anyway, This
film is considered one of the most cursed films in
Hollywood because within several years of its release, all three

(09:10):
of the lead actors died in mysterious circumstances.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
James Wood.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Of course, we've discussed Little Bastard, the cursed car that
supposedly received its curse after Dean died in it in
a massive wreck, not even a month before Rebel Without
a Cause was actually released. Then there was Salmoneo who
was tragically gunned down outside of his apartment. He was

(09:39):
mugged and killed. And then of course, lastly Natalie Woods,
who was at the time married to Robert Wagner. This
is the big thing with Robert Wagner and being a murderer.
They were on a boat with Christopher Walken. Walkin was
below deck. Wooden Wagner had an argument and Wagner was
later found with bruises on her She had fallen out

(10:00):
of the boat and apparently drowned. And so, of course
the story goes that the film that all three of
them were in, where all three of them played characters
that had tragic pasts and they all died from a
cursed film. Next on our list of cursed films is

(10:21):
and this one is really weird, but I'm putting it
on here, The Passion of the Christ.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
Yeah, I know, weird for me to put on the
movie about.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
Jesus Christ being tortured and crucified, but believe it or not,
actor Jim Cavesl suffered numerous injuries, including hypothermia and ammonia,
dislocated shoulder, and he was even struck by lightning during
the film's production.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
Now this is just excessive in anybody's view.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
Now, he does believe that it was more blessing than
a curse to play this role, but still to think
that he was out there playing this role and suffered
so many injuries and so many accidents while performing it
is just otherworldly.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
Next up on the list, we have the film Poulttergeist.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
If you don't know, Poltergeist was the story of a
family that moved into a home built on a native
burial ground and the spirits there caused all kinds of
activities and even kidnapped a little girl into the spirit world.
The Poultergeist series is probably one of the best classic

(11:41):
eighty horror movie series, and there is still a scene
from Poultergeist three that I just can't stand. It just
irks me to death. But I've always loved watching the movies.
I just can't not watch them. But the tragedy started
from the get go with accidents on set, many people
claiming it was because in the famous pol scene they

(12:01):
actually used real skeletons that they got from a biology
and anatomy shop that were supposed to be used for
medical purposes to film that scene. But the biggest tragedy
came when Dominique Dunn, who played the eldest daughter in
the first movie, was murdered by an abusive boyfriend just
a few months after The poultryguy'st premiere. After the third film,

(12:25):
the youngest star, Heather o' rourke, at the age of twelve,
died from a cardiac arrest caused by an unknown intestinal issue,
an issue that they still to these days can't figure
out what caused it.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
These deaths kind of left the.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
Dark stain on the film series, and it's what led
to the film series discontinuing in after three movies until
the remake in the twenty tens, because nobody wanted to
touch it. They were very worried about the specter that
kind of held over the film. Now we're getting close
to the big one, the one that most people already

(13:07):
thought was cursed, and that is The Exorcist, and it
is considered still to this day one of the most
frightening horror movies in history.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
But even on set, there were so many issues.

Speaker 1 (13:23):
There were accidents, there were people getting sick, people getting hurt.
You know, on a movie where a young girl is
experiencing a demonic possession and bad things are happening, to
have a set suddenly set on fire and burned down
has to be something that makes you question whether or
not you want to work on this project. Follow that

(13:45):
up with actress Ellen burst and suffering a major back
injury that left her on crutches for most of the
film's product production people falling downstairs. This led to an
actual priest having to be called to less the set. Unfortunately,

(14:07):
it didn't seem to work that well because two of
the actors, Jack mcgauran and Vascilia Milleros and I'm sorry
if I messed up her name. She played father Harris's mother.
They both died before the film's release.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
The troubles and issues that of course surrounded this film
only added to its.

Speaker 1 (14:28):
Notoriety and immediately got it labeled as a cursed film.
And I've got one more for you, and it's one
that I don't know that well, but it is considered
to be one of the worst of the worst when
it comes to cursed film.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
And that is the Omen series.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Now, if you don't know about the Omen, the Omen
is the story of a father who finds out that
his child is the Antichrist. And it is basically people
going to him saying, you have to kill your kid
because he's the Antichrist. That's how we stopped the Devil.
Gregory Peck played the father. You know, the great actor.
Gregory Peck played the father in this movie. After signing

(15:09):
on just two months before filming began, Gregory Peck's own
son died from suicide. Now, I know what you're saying.
That's tragic and that's terrible. That doesn't mean the show's cursed.
Well wait a minute now. As Peck was flying to
London to start filming, the plane that he was in
was struck by lightning. Follow that up, another plane carrying

(15:32):
a producer for the film was also struck by lightning
on the way. While filming, the production saw a ton
of unfortunate events. There was a plane that was going
to be used for aerial shots and was switched out
at the last minute. The initial plane, the crew and
people on board, crashed, killing everyone on board. There was

(15:56):
a memorable scene where there were angry baboons at a zoo,
and of course they had to have an animal trainer
to work with those animals.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
Well, that animal.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
Trainer was killed by a tiger the day after filming
the scene for The Omen. The Omen's closeness to tragedy
and stuff and these accidents are what gave it this
dark air and made it listed as one of Hollywood's
most cursed films. Now, do you believe in curses? Let

(16:26):
me know in the comments, of course, because I would
love to have this conversation with you. But if you
ask me, lots of these movies they definitely are showing
signs of being cursed. Or could just be that all
these tragedies are normal happenings and it just so happens
that it's happening a lot to people in the same place.

(16:48):
It doesn't necessarily tie in that they've brought some dark
energy back from the movie, but it does definitely add
to the essence of those scary films that were supposed
to know or horror films, and they're supposed to spook
us out. To find out that the actors suffered such
hardships while working on such a spooky film, dealing with

(17:12):
so many spooky things Anyway, those are our stories for today.
I hope that you guys found it as entertaining as
all the other stories. And if you want to watch
any of those movies, I highly recommend almost all of them.
They are some great pieces of cinema and they may

(17:33):
be a little cursed, so make sure you do while
you're little things before watching them, particularly the Omen because
I mean, I don't know, lightning strikes just kind of
seem like.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
A sign there. You know. I'm just saying thanks for listening, folks.
I really appreciate you being here.
