Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome back, folks. Today, I'm the Carolina Storyteller. We're gonna
be talking about one of my favorite Judeo Christian myths.
I guess it's not really Judeo Christians, an Abrahamic myth,
but it ties into so many other mythologies and things.
I'm gonna be talking about the mythos surrounding one character.
(00:21):
Lilis Uh stay tuned, and this is the Carolina Storyteller.
Speaker 2 (00:32):

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Hi, folks, welcome back to the Carolina Storyteller. I am
your storytailer, Jonathan Phoenix. Today we are talking about, as
I said, one of the most interesting mythological characters in history.
I think technically considered the mother evil, the mother of demon's,
the mother of vampires, the mother of werewolves, basically mother
to a lot of things except for humanity, even though
(01:38):
by most standards she was one of the first humans. Now,
before we get started to remind everyone to support the

Atomicon is coming up May third and fourth at the
Trident Technical College Convention Center in North Charleston. I'm going
to be there. The Vampire Queen Jackie's going to be there,
Stevie Frontrutherer Demons is going to be there, Doctor Puff
(02:43):
Flowers is joining us. I believe Nick may be there.
Our sound director Marshawn's going to be there. Our sound
designer who's been working on the show since Atomic cod
from last year when I recruited him after meeting him
at a booth at Atomicon. So it's going to be
a lot of fun. There's gonna be lots of great
things going on there. You should come down and be
(03:04):
a part of it. If you're not planning to already,
you need to make those plans. May thirty fourth, try
it Technical College Conference Center. Be there, not asking you twice.
Be there. Be it a Tomacon, I mean it, show
up anyway. Now that we're done with that, let's get
(03:25):
on to today's story. Today's story is actually a myth, legend,
ancient history. I don't know what to place it as
because it's this character is really interesting. You see, dependent
on what Abrahamic religion you believe in. Also depends on
how much you actually believe in the existence of Lilith.
(03:47):
And that's because Christianity basically blotted her out from Genesis completely.
Her origin goes back to the Book of Genesis and
the Abrahamic religions. He was created. And now here's the
interesting thing. There are four different versions of her creation story,
(04:10):
and dependent on who you want to believe in, who
you want to listen to is kind of where you
put her creation story. Now, granted, the oldest versions show
her either created at the same time or with Adam,
but later she was created after Adam and some legends.
(04:32):
And the reason why I say later is because when
you look at when these origin stories were written down,
they come later. Now, there are some stories that are
around the same time that say she came first, but
however it was, and we're gonna go with the most
(04:53):
well known, which is that Lilith was created with Adam. Now,
there are some stories that say that Little was created
literally with Adam. They were created as one body with
two faces on either side, one male one female that
were combined into one to basically be the perfect entity.
(05:13):
But they couldn't work together as they were, so Jehovah
seeing this split the two of them in house, creating
man and woman. And this is the first man and woman.
Now there is another story, and the reason we're going
with this one is because and I'm gonna tell you
(05:34):
the other story and you're gonna be like, yeah, let's
go with the first one. And the other story is
that Adam was created by himself and when he saw
that all the animals had mates. He wanted to take
one of the mates for his own, but none of
them fit right, and so he begged God for a mate.
And that just sounds a little weird to me on
Adam's behalf. So we're just going to ignore that story.
(05:55):
Besides that, that is the most recent other stories, and honestly,
whoever wrote that it was a little twisted in the
head I feel, I don't I don't know, And granted
this is only ancient myth though, so who knows. Maybe
maybe that's what happened. Maybe Adam was out there trying
to bang goats. And anyway, we're gonna we're gonna skip
over that, get past that, and just say that the
two of them were created together. Whether they created as
(06:17):
one body or created at the same time as two
separate bodies is up for debate. But Little Van Addaen
were created together, and they were created just like all
the other mated pairs to kind of live and prosper
in Eden. Now, based off of what I'm understanding from
the reading and everything humanity was on Earth, we were
(06:38):
actually there. It's it's in the legends. What was created
in Eden? Were the Guardians of Earth? A different version
of humanity. Basically, we were placed there to help rebuild
Earth because God was going to clear the planet of problems.
(06:59):
And this is at a time this is where we
get legends of him throwing and the name Yahweh is
used here where he tosses creatures like Leviathan, beezelbo Ball,
all of them get tossed in the hell. This is
where we get the creation of actual hell is during
this time is when they're in Eden. He is getting
(07:21):
rid of all the evil things on the planet while
we are being kind of groomed to take over the planet,
and so he's created. Adam and Eve are Adam and Lilith. Originally,
Lilith doesn't like being told what to do. She thinks
(07:42):
that she should be in charge. Adam thinks that he
should be in charge. Lilith will not yield to Adam
on anything they have to kind of every time they
go to make a decision, Lilith is very strong and
opinionated and sticks to her points and does not give
an inch. You know, they have to when they have
(08:02):
to come to a compromise. A lot of times it's
either going to be Litli sware the highway. It seems,
but what really broke the camel's back was when Adam
wanted to copulate. He tried to force Lilith beneath him,
and that's where the problems really began or and ended
(08:24):
pretty much because it didn't go well for Adam. In
the story, Lilith thought back brutally, and if you're a guy,
you could probably imagine what Lilith did to stop this
oppression from Adam because she would not lay beneath him. No,
(08:47):
that's not happening Adam. Lilith wanted to be on top.
This is literally why we get this creature is because Adam,
I'm not even going to go there, just going to pass.
Over that point, Lilith decided that she was not going
to put up with adam stuff anymore, and Lilith left.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
It.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
This is where the story gets a little weird because
Lilith supposedly spoke the magical name of Jehovah, the name
that no one is supposed to be able to speak.
It's called the Unspeakable. Lilith spoke this name, and in
doing so, she was able to fly away from Eden.
(09:32):
Jehovah's heard Adam's prayer. Adam begged him to find the
list and bring her back. Jehovah said angels to go
looking for Lili's and be like, well, come on, come back,
and she was in the middle of copulating with demons supposedly.
Now this is really interesting because it says she was
in the middle of copulating with demons, but it also
(09:53):
says that the creation of the sin of lust came
from Lilith going and copulating with the angel sam I
l Now what's in is the archangel Samuel was also
one of the ones sent to find Lilith, but supposedly
she was out having a sex orgy with demons. I
don't know why all the stories kind of intertwined with sex,
(10:14):
but they do. And Lilith was giving birth to other demons.
So basically, the angels went back and said, look, she's
not coming back, and it's just not going to happen.
She's done, she's gone and found herself. She's having a
demon orgy. Dude, we just we can't have her back.
And so to make Adam happy, God took one of
(10:36):
his ribs and created Eve. And we all know that story.
That's not the story we want to talk about. We
want to talk about Lilith, because Lilith apparently was they
were given abilities, they were supposed to be the caretakers,
and Lilith was one of the original caretakers. Eve was not.
(10:57):
Lilith was was the original they were created from supposedly
the same stuff unless you believe the other story, which
just makes Adam look really dirty and honestly, looking at
it with a critical mind, you start doing this number.
So we're not going to go into that other story
because that's other story isn't even the popular one. So
(11:22):
Lilis is now outside of the Garden of Eden and
she is traveling around and God decides to punish her
and decides that every day a hundred of her children
shall die because she's giving birth to demons and other
creatures because she's out copulating with the monsters and the
weird creatures and angels and everything. So every day, apparently
(11:44):
she's giving birth to thousands of children a day, and
a hundred of them are going to die every day.
This is the curse's placed upon her. Now, this makes
her really, really angry. And the thing is is that
Lilis is apparently very very powerful, and we're never explained
as to why Lilith has such power. But Lilith is
(12:06):
very very powerful as well, be it by her determination
or whatever. Lilith sees Adam and Eve now being given
living their best life after coming out of Eden, and
Lilith decides that she's going to punish them by taking
their children. And when the angels come to and say, well,
(12:27):
you can't do that, Lilith goes, no, no, no, no,
no no no. I have the power over the until
their eighth day of life as a boy, or their
twelfth eighth year of life as a boy, in their
twelfth year of life as a female. I have yet
to figure out what the importance of those two days are,
but it's interesting that Lilith claimed power over all children
(12:50):
of man until that day, meaning that she could draw
them to her. Lilith goes on to start having relationships
with humans, some of them descendants of Adam and Eve.
This is where, because of the curses put upon her,
(13:11):
we start to see the birth of creatures like vampires
and werewolves. They start with what's called the lamia, and
I'm gonna look here, I'm going to go back to
my research real quick, because the the lamia that were
(13:36):
created were the early forms of vampires and werewolves, and
this came through Lilith's subjection of men. Lilith began seducing
men away from their pure states. She would go to
them in their dreams. One of the things to remember
(13:57):
about Lilith is is that in agree aspect, she is
the most beautiful female ever created. There's nothing more beautiful
than her. Aphrod Deity when she was created probably had
a shit bit because she was like, wait, that woman
is what now? No? No, no, no no, I'm I'm
number two. Hell now where does a woman act? So
(14:22):
a Ford did. He was probably after her too, But
little story doesn't just stop there. Little's story continues to
go on. She began with killing Vince because she refused
to give Chatham children to Adam. She wanted to take
the children from Adam, but that that really didn't That
(14:46):
really didn't work for her. It didn't work because a
practice that became taken was to protect your child from
little Angels were actually angels named Sin Saint Soy and
Simengel were sent to protect the newborns from h from
(15:12):
Lilith when they were born, protecting our children basically, and
so Litlis gave up on that This is where the
seduction of men came in. Since she couldn't take a
wrath out on children, she decided to take a wrath
out on men. Remember she has a deep hatred and
resentment towards Adam, and she would attack grown men in
(15:34):
their sleep. She would come to them in green, she
would draw them to her, she would have sex with them,
and then she would give birth to the Lamier, who
were known to drink the blood of men. She also
created the Nama, and the Lamier and Nama are the
(15:55):
earliest forms known of werewolves in vampires and legends, and
this is where Lilith got the name Mother of all vampires.
So remember she goes out from Eden on her own
and starts sleeping with demons first. Now granted, first supposedly
she banged an angel that created an floe. Now we're
(16:16):
going to get into that in a minute. Then demons,
and she gave birth to demons, then humans, and birth
vampires and werewolves. So she's doing a lot of creation,
which is where another udgeon comes is that the powers
that were given to Adam and Lilith, one was the
(16:39):
power to govern, the other was the power to create
life and that's why Lilith was able to mother so
many things, and why Adam was supposed to be the
one to lead. Okay, okay, okay, all right, we'll buy
that four dollars. Where was I? Oh yeah, we're talking
(16:59):
about Lilith's seducing men and creating vampires. Lilith then turned
her eyes towards women, because women were, of course given
the ability to create life, and Lilith saw that as
a slight against her because that was supposed to be
her job. So she began working her magic to stop
(17:22):
women from conceiving. And it was believed to be that
Lilith had been the cause for infertility when a woman
was not able to give child, that she had been
cursed by Lilith, that Lilith had actually gotten to her.
So this is actually a belief that carried on for
several hundred years, that Lilith was the cause of imfertility.
(17:47):
Maybe it's still today. I don't know. You know, if
you're not having a child, maybe you need to get
one of these because what they did was Oh and
by the way, Lilith didn't suffer labor when giving birth.
That's another thing you should you could you should consider
Lilith had no problems having babies, but she could take
(18:11):
that ability from others. So there were protective protective angelic
ambulance that would be given to women who were trying
to conceive or becoming pregnant, so that Lilith would not
be able to stop them from giving birth. Now what
(18:33):
a lot of people misconceived is that Lilith is inherently evil.
She's not. In fact, Lilith kind of gave up, honestly.
That's that's the legend is that eventually she just got tired.
(18:55):
Lilith was angry. So Lilith was attacking, but she wasn't
attacking just random She was attacking the descendants of Adam.
Now this is important because it turns out that there
are more than just the descendants of Adam on the planet.
So anyone that was not descended from Adam didn't have
a freaking problem with lil Litlith didn't care about them.
(19:19):
It was just Adam she was mad at because she
felt that Adam took her place away from her by
having Eve created. Adam couldn't force her, so he created
something to be forced in. Lilith literally, for the longest time,
raged against Adam and his descendants. But eventually it seems
(19:43):
Lili's just got tired. She became a queen. She had
her own kingdom for a while, and that kingdom was
ran by Canaanites. And there she had a child named Hebba,
who apparently married a god, a storm god. Now there
are arguments that this storm god may or may not
have been God, which doesn't make a lot of sense.
(20:06):
But Hebba was considered the wife of a storm god
and was apparently a child of Lilith, who led the Canaanites.
And this is why there was a problem with the
Canaanites in history and why they were after Lilith of
(20:26):
all people. The end of Lili's story is kind of
it kind of fizzles, you know. Lilith's kind of gets
tired of what she's doing and this goes off on
her own. No one knows how Lilith went away. She
just kind of petered off and left, like she seduces.
(20:49):
There are a testaments that Lilith reigns in Hell. She
is one of the rulers in Hell, but supposedly her
is kind of separate from Hell. There are testaments that
Lilis has just set up some quiet shop on Earth
and she's just sitting there. Lilith could be running your
favorite vegan bakery for all I know. Lilith could be
(21:12):
here on Earth. If you know a really beautiful woman,
I mean a really beautiful woman that is like insanely
beautiful and just doesn't seem to give up care and
has a problem with men, you might know the actual Lilis.
You might know her. But yeah, Lilith didn't. She wasn't killed,
she didn't die, she wasn't you know, destroyed. She just quit.
(21:38):
She finally got over being mad and decided she didn't
care anymore. So if she's not watching over her young,
is she doing this, she's doing that? Who knows? That
is the story in legend behind Lilith. Very interesting story.
It's interesting to me because it's I was. I grew
(21:59):
up in a Presbyterian church, okay, and for the longest
time I thought I was going to be a youth pastor.
I really did. We're not going to get into that
story or how I was betrayed by a pastor in
the church and it wasn't my pastor, and my pastor
left to go and minister somewhere else. But the guy
(22:19):
they brought to replacement kind of showed me that we're
not doing this. Sorry anyway, but I was raised. I
was raised on the Bible. I've read the book, Okay,
I know Genesis, Exos, Libigus, numbers, Deuteronomy, been there, done that.
I know the old stories. And what's interesting to me
(22:39):
is that Lilis was left out of so many iterations
anything modern, anything post post Constantinople. I think even even
in Jewish text Lilis has left out of a lot
of it. She's kind of been omitted. And it's only
by going back and looking and get ancient historical documents
(23:02):
to look at where this stuff came from and actually
studying and researching that you can find where she actually was. Now, granted,
she is mentioned in a lot, and I mean a
lot of other mythology. She's in Hindu mythology, she's in
there's a version of Lilis in many Asian religions. Lili
(23:23):
shows up in so many other places, including Greek and
Roman mythology. And yet Lilith doesn't show up in modern
Judeo Abrahamic religion texts. It's like she's been omitted. And
I find that really really interesting, because I mean, I'm sorry,
(23:48):
might be getting in a soccer soapbox here, but if
there's a book that somebody tells you don't read, you
should probably read it, okay, especially if it's something that
they're trying to keep from you. You know, if they're
trying to bar you from reading it, there's probably a
reason they don't want you to read it. There's information
in there they don't want you to know. Now is
(24:10):
it going to be good information for you to know?
I don't know, but you should probably read it. That's
just my saying. There are books like nineteen eighty four
George Orwell's Animal Farm. These books are to Fahrenheit four
fifty one. You know, these are great books, and they're
a lot They're on the band Books list, and I'm
like why, And here we go. Lilith has been removed
(24:37):
from a lot of texts and hidden by a lot
of religious leaders, and I'm like why. So that's why
Littles is such a fascinating character to me, and I
hope she's fascinating to you all as well. Anyway, that's
our story for today. I am de caring on a storyteller.
