When you think about the challenges that come up in your life, are you someone who thinks first about the problem or the solution? Today’s guest lives by the philosophy, “If you don’t see the solution, build it from scratch!” Her track record of advocacy work, holding a position in politics, and writing a book, all while raising two children, goes to show this mindset works! This week on Journeys Through Change, my guest, Marie Newman, and I are talking about her journey navigating politics, advocacy, and building solutions from scratch!

Marie Newman is a former congresswoman, nonprofit CEO, marketing executive, author of A Life Made from Scratch and When Your Child Is Being Bullied: Real Solutions, antibullying activist, former Moms Demand Action spokesperson and national LGBTQ+ advocate. In addition to those roles, she is a mom of two adult children, consultant and podcaster. Marie Newman is known for building movements and solving the toughest problems. Marie’s newest release, her memoir, A Life Made From Scratch is out now!. Her motto has always been, when you do not see the solution you desperately need, make it from scratch.

In this episode, Marie and I discuss:

  • How Marie's philosophy of creating solutions from scratch applies to various aspects of life.
  • The beginnings of Marie's activism in civil and women's rights, and how her passion for fairness and justice guided her path forward.
  • Insights and lessons learned from her time in Congress.
  • Practical advice for those feeling disillusioned by the current political climate, emphasizing the power of advocacy and community involvement.
  • The cathartic process of writing her latest book and her plans for a new fiction novel that draws on her personal and professional experiences.

Change is inevitable. That’s why I designed the Day by Daybook®, a guided journal to help you face the discomfort of those shifts in life that are pushing you to that next level of growth and learning. Get your Day by Daybook® here.
