Speaker 1 (00:20):
what's up guys?
Welcome back to the clinchPodcast.
If you don't know, my name isShay and today I just wanted to
say thank you To start off.
You guys really received lastweek's episode really well.
I had so much fun doing it inthat format, so I've decided
(00:43):
that that will be the primaryformat.
Really.
That will that these episodeswill be structured like going
forward.
So I'm so excited.
It's so much more relaxing andjust adds like a chill aspect to
a otherwise very intense topic.
(01:05):
So I'm really excited that youguys liked that.
That made me super happy.
So I'll continue doing deathscrolls at the end of most
episodes and we'll just be goingthrough fights as the episode
goes along.
And today we're going to startoff with UFC Tampa as well as
(01:30):
some predictions for the fightnight that's going to kick off
the year Amanda Rivas versusMackenzie Dern, which I think
should be exciting.
I also have some other opinionson it, but we'll go ahead and
get into that a little bit later.
Let's go ahead and start offwith UFC Tampa.
(01:51):
I wanted to start off with DaveyGrant versus Tavares.
So I really love Davey Grant.
I was so excited to see himfight.
As you all know, if youlistened to last week's episode.
I've been watching him since, like I said, his season of the
(02:12):
Ultimate Fighter where he was onRonda Rousey's team.
So I really just enjoy a DaveyGrant show.
He always keeps it exciting andhe really showed up in this
fight and I think he'll bearound for a while.
He's just one of those fun guysthat is just always fun to
watch.
Like a clay guida I feel likedifferent style and pacing, so
(02:35):
like not in that aspect, butjust the amount of draw they get
just for being a ufc's good guytype of thing.
So I loved that fight, superexcited for it.
It paid off big time.
So let me know if you guysenjoyed that one.
And then next I want to go aheadand talk about Miranda Maverick
(02:57):
versus Jamie Lynn Orth.
So if you've heard my previousepisodes where I've talked about
Mirandaanda maverick, you knowthat I was kind of on the fence
with her for a while and justher past few fights have just
kind of put a bad taste in mymouth.
She is a she's a bit of acomplainer and she is delusional
(03:25):
, which you know what a goodfighter does and what a champion
mindset should include isdelusion to a certain extent,
you know, healthy, ambitiousdelusion, which I think is just
a little different from whatMiranda and her team exhibit.
(03:48):
I think that her skill levelisn't where they perceive it to
be, and I do also want toinclude that.
On the other hand, miranda didhave a bit of a reason to
complain in this fight becausethere were some iffy strikes to
(04:09):
the back of the head.
So I I would be pissed aboutthat too.
So I totally understand herbeing upset about it and posting
about it on social media.
I just think it is still cringe.
I still view it as cringe andthat's cringe and that's just my
opinion.
That's just my opinion.
Yeah, I just am not sure whatexactly she can do to evolve.
(04:40):
I if her mindset and her team'smindset is where it is.
So it was just an interestingfight to see and I want to give
her her props.
She does have amazing strengthin wrestling.
She's super athletic, so Iadmire that.
I just think her mental aspectsof her game are lacking, and
(05:11):
fight IQ included.
So I don't know, we'll see.
I could be just talking smackfor no reason.
I most likely am, but let meknow what you guys think.
So on to the next one we have, woodson versus Padilla.
So this one obviously supercrazy, very exciting.
(05:32):
Sean Woodson is shaped verypeculiarly.
Peculiarly I probably am too.
To a lot of people I don'tthink so, but I do think that
Sean Woodson does have a veryspecific shape about him.
That's interesting to thinkabout.
(05:53):
You know, how his physiquegives him an advantage is
something really cool to thinkabout.
So I don't mean that in aderogatory way, I just want to
say it's.
Let me know what you guys think, what advantages he might have
from having those super long, you know stiff, skinny legs.
(06:14):
But in this fight he definitelyhad the advantage, both in
strength, speed, technique,everywhere.
Um, it just kind of looked sadfor Padilla.
He looked lost and dazed 90% ofthe time.
So it was super sad for him butexciting for us.
(06:35):
That is the sickening realityof us as fans of this brutal
sport and I think that it wassuper cool to see such a cool
knockout with everything Woodsonthrough by the end just didn't
have an answer for it.
(06:56):
So Better man won the fightthat night and it was super
entertaining.
And after that fight we had JoelAlvarez versus Draco Close and
that was pretty shocking to me.
I knew it would be a prettyclose fight.
(07:18):
But I didn't expect Draco Closeto I don't know kind of look as
weak chinned, but I don't knowwhy, because I remember last
time he fought I noticed thathis chin was a bit weak.
So interesting, I'm superexcited.
Someone from Spain won, though.
Love it Very, very fun.
(07:40):
And of course we have MichaelJohnson versus Osman Azatar and
that was sounding probably crazyin your ear, sorry, friends,
but of course that was anamazing fight.
Michael Johnson showed out.
He's another one.
I feel like I have the sameperspective of him as I do like
(08:04):
Chris Weidman or Michael Chiesa.
I mentioned that a few episodesago, where I second guess a
fighter because of how maybelong they've been in the UFC and
I'm just curious to see howthey fare against a more
(08:25):
difficult opponent.
So I was pleasantly surprisedat how well Michael Johnson did.
It was sick.
I thoroughly enjoyed that fight.
And now I want to move on to CubSwanson versus Billy
Quarantillo.
So before I dive into that one,I just want to say I always
(08:55):
have that internal conflictbetween and I know I'm not
pronouncing it the best, I knowmy Spanish isn't great, but it's
definitely not the worst butBilly Quarantillo and
Quarantillo it.
It's so hard for me to sayQuarantillo, so I'm sorry.
I'm just gonna proceed to sayit that way, because that is how
(09:16):
the MMA community has.
Majority of us have agreed.
That's how it's pronounced.
Or I say of us, like we're afreaking cult, but yeah, so
we're gonna go with that.
But crazy fight, it was socrazy.
I'm actually really happy thatit played out how it did,
(09:37):
because I knew that both ofthese would be a difficult
challenge for the other person,so I'm glad that it actually
went into the third round andended.
Of course, how it did.
That was just one of thoseclassic knockouts.
Both men did their best and Ithink, of course, cub Swanson
(10:01):
had the edge throughout.
He just posed as a difficultopponent for billy because he
was someone that just did not godown.
He well, he would, you know, obviously get taken down, but he
wasn't gonna go out and hewasn't really someone you could
(10:23):
get past, and so he was hittinga stone wall while he was trying
to think this fight through asit was going.
And Cub Swanson is just notthat kind of fighter.
He's not that kind of thinker,or he doesn't seem to be.
He seems to be someone whofights instinctually and that's
(10:44):
another topic that I've talkedabout a lot on the podcast is
the difference between aninstinctual fighter and a
technical, calculated fighter, and they both definitely have
their pros and their cons.
So I'm definitely open to doinga dedicated episode just
(11:06):
comparing a whole bunch offighters I think a whole bunch
of fighters and the style that Ithink they exemplify the most,
and what works for them and whatdoesn't work for them.
That would be super fun.
Let me know if you guys want meto do that.
Instinctual versus calculatedfighters.
That sounds super fun.
So yeah, he got laid out.
(11:30):
Billy did, and it was crazy.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I know you guys did too Classic, classic Cub Swanson in there,
and I hope that he does fight afew more times.
I hope it's not just one morefight, but looks to be that way.
So looks like we're gonna besaying bye to Cub Swanson here
(11:54):
pretty soon.
So everyone get ready for that.
I know I will definitely haveto get ready for that too.
Now I want to move on to theChristmas present that the
entire MMA community was giftedthis fine holiday season, and
that was a win for JoaquinBuckley and loss for Coley
(12:20):
Covington.
I'm so happy that this happened.
I'm not a fan.
I'm just not exactly someonewho gets excited by a Colby
Covington fight announcement.
He has some skill, or he hashad at least two fights that I
(12:42):
can remember where I was likeokay, yes, very good, very, very
demure.
But in the other fights I'mjust like not impressed.
He's not that exciting to me.
So I was kind of happy and Isay kind of because I do wish it
was a different kind of finish, because I do wish it was a
(13:07):
different kind of finish.
But it is also something tothink about that his skin split
so easily.
Like is he a soft-faced man?
And you know there are worsethings to be than a soft-faced
man, but not much, not many morethings worse than that.
If I were a man I definitelywouldn't want to be a soft-faced
(13:30):
one.
But you know that that is justhis own issue, I guess you know
I'm not sure what in his game heneeds to change to be able to
pull through on his fights andmaintain any kind of, I guess,
skill to back his name up.
(13:50):
So I'm was I was underwhelmedby him but of course, super
excited for walking buckley.
He's continuing to climb upthose rankings and fully
deserves this ascend.
So I'm really excited.
And yeah, that was UFC Tampa.
Those were my highlight fights.
(14:13):
And now I do want to talk aboutUFC Vegas, dern versus Ribas.
So duval, our very own PrestonParsons.
I wanted to go ahead and justopen up with that one.
I'm super excited.
He has a whole city behind him.
(14:36):
All of Jacksonville is rootingfor you, preston.
Super excited about that.
Don't know much about AndresGustafson, but all I know is
that we get it.
We get it out here, we beswinging, so I'm super excited
about that one.
(14:58):
And then next we have ErnestaKatakach and Nicole Cagliari.
I apologize if I mispronounceany name going forward.
I'm going to try my best, butI'm pretty sure Nicole Cagliari
is going to take this one.
I don't think that with thestats and record that Ernesta is
(15:18):
showing her trends, as far astrends go, I'm not sure she has
the edge here, but we'll see, ofcourse.
And then we have Nouroulo Alyevversus Yanal Ashmoz.
I think that Nouroulo shouldhave the edge.
I think that his accuracies forstriking takedowns were a
(15:39):
little better than Yanal and hisrecent track record, I believe,
is a little better.
So we're gonna go ahead and gono Rulo on that one.
And then we also have JoseJohnson versus Felipe Buñez.
I I think Felipe has it on thisone.
(16:01):
I think that he's looking alittle bit more fresher going in
, just from what I've seen, sobit more pressure going in, just
from what I've seen.
So, don't you know, hold me tothat one, but we'll see.
And then we have anotherexciting fight Punahele Siriano
versus Uro Shmedek.
I think that Uro Shmedek willjust have a slight edge over
(16:24):
Punahele here.
I think he might just be ableto overpower him just a bit.
But then again, you know, punahele is extremely strong.
So I'm interested to see howthey match up against one
another.
But I think that Yorosh willhave it in this one.
(16:45):
And then we have Carlson Harrisversus Santiago Ponzinibbio.
I actually think that CarlsonHarris will have this one.
I think that he'll have theedge as far as striking goes,
and Santiago Ponzinibbio willhave a hard time kind of moving
(17:07):
and grooving along with Carlston.
So I foresee Harris going aheadand winning that one.
And Austin Boshy versusChristian Rodriguez is a very
interesting one.
I don't know a lot about AustinBoshy.
He looks super young.
About Austin Boshy, he lookssuper young.
(17:33):
So it's been kind of a trendfor these super like young
fighters to come in and justkind of go crazy Chase Hooper,
for a recent example.
So I'm gonna go Austin Boshy onthis one, just kind of banking
on that trend.
He looks like a wrestler.
So I'm gonna go ahead and juststick with the typical UFC
formula that I have kind of justseen trend over the years.
(17:57):
And then I want to kind of skipover a few and go to Tiago
Moises versus Trey Ogden.
I think that Tiago Moises hasbeen super unpredictable and so
I'm going to go Trey Ogden here.
He has had just a little bitmore consistency and excitement
(18:18):
factor thrown into his fight, sowe're going to go ahead and say
him here.
And then another one I'm superexcited about is Chris Curtis
versus Roman Kofelov.
I actually really like ChrisCurtis.
I have been super entertainedby his previous fights.
However, I'm actually going togo Roman Kapilov on this one,
(18:40):
just because Chris Curtis isanother one who is not so
reliable all the time, one whois not so reliable all the time.
So Roman Krapilov definitelyseems like he has more of the
boogie factor here, like he'llbe able to control the fight
more.
You know, kind of just thinkone step ahead.
(19:04):
So I'm really excited to seehow that's going to play out.
Equally as interested, justbecause I want to see how that
whole chess match goes.
And then we have Marco Tulioversus Ihor Potier.
That is the cone cone, that isthe co-main event for that night
(19:28):
.
And that one is interesting tome.
It looks like this is MarcoTulio's debut, his UFC debut.
So I don't know too much abouthim.
And Ihor Potera seems to besuper promising Not super Seems
to be kind of promising as wellfrom what I saw in my research
(19:50):
for this.
Just not very predictable.
So I'm using that word a lotand I've just kind of been
trying to think of a formula tokind of gauge my decisions on,
and predictability is a hugepart of that formula.
So I'm gonna just take a riskhere and say Marco Tulio.
(20:14):
I think that he will make astatement debut.
He's in a co-main event slot,so I think that he should be
able to deliver.
And then finally, we haveMackenzie Dern versus Amanda
Dibas.
This one, I hope, is exciting.
Just to be completely honest, Ilike both of these girls and I
(20:40):
have seen them be exciting.
I just have also seen them beboring.
So it'll be interesting to seewhat they're able to pull off.
So I'm I'm a little worried.
I just hope it's at leastexciting.
Now, as far as outcomes go, II'm gonna pick Mackenzie Dern.
(21:02):
Her jiu-jitsu, obviously, isnot something you want to bet
against.
Amanda D West also hasincredible striking and decent
grappling as well, of course.
But I just think that MackenzieDern has also been able to show
that she can evolve ratherquickly.
I think that there's a periodof time where she was lagging
(21:25):
behind and then all of a suddenshe improved exponentially and
just quickly out of nowhere.
And so I think that with herproving that she's able to do
that, she may be able to shockus with another quick
improvement, especially in herstriking, because her striking
(21:46):
has improved a lot over theyears too.
So I think that if she's ableto show that trend or follow
that trend of her you know, kindof shooting a light here ahead
in her game, I think that we'llbe able to see her pull off the
(22:07):
win, and I hope it's.
I hope it's by submission.
I love her jiu-jitsu.
I hope that we're able to see agrappling chess match.
That's my hope and that'shonestly where I think most
excitement will happen, becauseI just am not sure that striking
will be the most excitingbetween these two, but, who
(22:27):
knows, both of them go at it.
So I'm not sure that strikingwill be the most exciting
between these two, but, whoknows, both of them go at it.
So I'm really excited.
Let me know what you guys think.
And then now I want to go aheadand close up with a death scroll
.
You guys really enjoyed that.
I was super happy because itwas just something I had always
(22:51):
kind of called it in my head um,just, with all of social media
scrolling not just UFC and youknow, mma news um, but to
include it in this podcast justis so natural to me because,
like I said, it's just somethingthat I do or something that I
(23:11):
think every time I'm scrolling.
So now that I get to say it outloud, it's just fun, it just
tickles that bone.
So, yay, let's go ahead andjump into our death scrolls.
So I'm gonna go ahead andchoose mma junkie for this week.
Let's see what they have to say.
(23:32):
Of course, just something younotice right off the bat
everyone's just so happy colbycovington lost it.
Just so many people arerejoicing in this beautiful
holiday spirit.
It's just great.
Um looks like jake paul hassomething to say regarding the
(23:54):
notorious connor mcgregor.
Now it all makes sense whyconnor mcgregor and his
management team have beendesperately trying to get mvp to
negotiate for a fight betweenus and and, as we told them
privately and now saying itpublicly, the only way we're
willing to explore me versusConor in a pro boxing MMA fight
(24:18):
is if Dana White, ufc are at thetable directly or make it clear
they're okay with decisions,just discussions.
Conor's washed needs the ballsLogan by however he wants.
Yeah, I mean true, true, Iagree with the pauls.
Hasn't been the first time.
I wish it was the last timeevery time, but it's just not so
(24:40):
.
Uh, yeah, oh, another one, uh,another cool one dana white
saying that Jon Jones versusTama Aspinall will 100% happen,
something we all knew, but likedidn't know but knew but didn't
know, but knew but didn't know.
You know.
So I feel like we'll all knowwhen we see the fight
(25:01):
announcement and the date booked.
But I'm excited that there issuch a workup or build up to it.
It's going to be just a massiveevent.
It is just going to.
It's going to be insane.
And the other fights that'll beon that card will just be
sickening.
So I'm super excited.
Let's see what else do we havehere israel adesanya versus
(25:26):
Nazardini Mamov that'll be coolto see.
I love any Israel Adesanyafight.
Been a fan for a long time.
I'll always be a fan.
Let's see.
Do you guys enjoy my thememusic?
Is it fun for you?
Great, great, great, great.
Let's see Sage Norcutt signswith pfl.
(25:50):
Uh, that's minor news, let'ssee.
Now I do want to go ahead andtalk about real quick something
that I want to do a wholeindependent episode on, and that
is global fight league.
But that will come out on aspecial occasion.
(26:10):
So I am going to talk aboutthat, I'm not just glazing over
it.
We are going to talk aboutGlobal Fight League, don't worry
.
Don't worry, I'm not worried.
I'm excited and you should betoo.
So, yeah, that looks like allthe crazy news that's happened
lately.
So that means that we arewrapping up today's episode.
(26:35):
You guys, it was super fun toagain just relax and talk fights
with you guys to do anotherdeath scroll.
Let me know if there are anyother MMA news accounts that you
guys have used before that youwant me to go ahead and do a
desk scroll on, but I do lovedoing that portion of the show
(26:58):
and I'm glad that you guys likedit Again.
I know I keep saying that it'sjust so cool to know that you
