Microphone (ATR2100x-US (03:57):
Welcome
back friend.
So, let me give you somecontext.
A few months ago, I had an ideaof hosting my first in-person
event.
I'm a big believer of buildingcommunity, creating
opportunities for students tonetwork.
And to interact with each other, along with other professionals
(04:21):
in various fields.
So when I had this idea, I letit sit for awhile.
Actually, I let it sit for alittle too long because then the
feeling kind of disappeared.
And I thought, you know what?
I'm not going to host thisevent.
And in reality, it was my ownfear.
(04:42):
My own fear of doing somethingyou maybe even some imposter
syndrome sprinkled throughoutthat made me feel I wasn't ready
for it.
And then I thought, you knowwhat?
Let me see if I can actuallymake this happen.
And so what I decided to do is Idecided to call my friend
(05:03):
William.
Who is a local podcaster here inParallon, Texas, and who had a
ton of experience hosting liveevents in our community.
And I thought, you know what, let me give him a call and just
share this thought and idea withhim.
So I called him up and asked himif he wanted to meet up for a
(05:24):
coffee date.
So we met up for coffee and Iwas planning to pitch the idea
to him.
And it didn't take much longafter I was sharing the idea
with them when he looks at meand said, all right, What's the
date.
And so I quickly fumbled throughmy calendar.
Trying to see what would be theideal date for this event.
(05:48):
And within the matter ofminutes.
And actually picked the date.
Monday, June 17th.
And just like that, I said thedate.
And I continue to make plans formy first in-person event.
And let me tell you.
The excitement was high, but itquickly started diminishing and
(06:10):
the fear and Ixinity andworriness started to kick in.
Not to mention cold feet andeven the thought of like, Hmm.
Maybe this wasn't such a goodidea after all.
Plus I had so many things I hadto do to make this happen.
and I wanted to also find asponsor for my events to be able
(06:32):
to offer all students present.
A free coffee, tea, Or smoothieon us.
So it is through this experiencethat I wanted to share with you
today.
My top tips on how to face anynew experience and confront the
fear and anxiety that makeagain.
When doing something new.
(06:53):
First and foremost, I wouldrecommend you find yourself an
accountability partner, someonewho gets it.
Whether it's another studentattending the same college,
someone who is attending.
One or more of the same classesthat you're going to be
attending.
to.
Or someone who's gone throughthat journey already, whether
(07:15):
it's the same college or asimilar campus.
It's so important to have anaccountability partner, because
it's someone who you'll be ableto lean on and count on
throughout the process.
You have no idea the value thatan accountability partner can
have on you.
And again, it's a great supportsystem.
(07:37):
So first and foremost, find thataccountability partner, and it
can also even be a roommate orsomeone who is in close
proximity to you.
The second thing I wouldrecommend is to write down all
the things that need to happenprior to that first day or that
first event.
Organize yourself and make alist of things that need to
(07:58):
happen.
And in what order.
This is where youraccountability partner will be
essential because they will besomeone who you can share that
list with and to see if theyhave a different perspective or
insightful feedback to provideyou with.
In my case, I wanted someone whowould understand this process of
(08:18):
holding an in-person event andprovide insightful feedback,
which in this case was myfriend.
William my accountabilitypartner for this event.
Third.
And lastly, I would recommendyou.
As I had to remind myselfmultiple times.
That this feeling is normal andnot let these feelings hold you
(08:40):
back.
Let me repeat that one more timethis is the third N equally as
important as the other two is toremind yourself.
Maybe even write it downsomewhere.
It's only ever reminded me thatthese feelings are normal and do
not let these feelings hold meback because fear and anxiety
(09:03):
can feel the exact same way asexcitement.
So, let me give you a tip whenyou are feeling fear or anxious,
say to yourself, wow.
I'm excited about this newadventure or I'm excited on the
start of a new school year orstarting at this new college.
Say to yourself that thisfeeling is excitement rather
(09:27):
than fear anxiety, because thatfeeling again can be quite
similar.
You get those knots in yourstomach, you feel like a lot of
anxiousness throughout yourbody.
So let's reframe the situationand make you look forward to
that event.
Share the experience withothers.
That way you can be excited tokeep on going.
(09:49):
And of course, thataccountability partner will be
essential in this process aswell.
Let me tell you.
I am so glad I hosted this eventbecause not all need.
what's the event successful.
but I ended up having twosponsors for the event and I was
even worried about finding one, which by the way, a big shout
(10:10):
out to my two sponsors for myfirst in-person event.
Nathan from Astro pond andParallon, Texas, and to Sam from
Navarro insurance here inHouston, Texas, a big shout out
to both of them.
Because thanks to them.
We were able to offer not only afree drink for students.
(10:30):
But to everyone in attendance.
And with a great reviews andcomments that I received from
those students present and thecommunity members present, I
realized what an opportunity wewould have lost.
If I wouldn't have faced myfear, not only with the students
lose an opportunity.
(10:50):
But those presents such ascommunity.
leaders and myself, of course.
That I needed to face this fearand not let it hold me back.
So my friend, don't let fearhold you back.
And keep ongoing.
And don't forget the value of anaccountability partner.
Someone who can walk rightbeside you.
(11:11):
So you don't have to do thisalone.
All right.
My sweet friend.
I hope he can sit back today andlook towards the future in your
new school or college endeavorthis upcoming school year.
Find yourself thataccountability partner and face
the unknown with confidence.
And that's promise I'm going toshare with you.
(11:32):
