Hey, my friend, thank you forjoining us here today.

I'm going to be talking aboutsomething that is not even a

(00:46):
topic of discussion in oureducation system.
And I'm not just talking abouthigh school, I'm talking about
college as well.
So if you are a high school orcollege student, you are in the
best episode, in my opinion.
And You are in for a great topicof conversation I will be

(01:06):
telling you why this is just asimportant in my opinion as what
other people think of which isgrades GPA and class rank and
that is The value and importanceof connections.
And I will tell you why, butfirst I want to invite you to
join our college and careerconnections club.

(01:29):
It's our weekly newsletter withbehind the scenes information,
personal reflections from yourstruly, and tips and tools and
resources for both high schooland college students.
Every once in a while, I mighteven throw in a special
scholarship that I might havefound that I think is beneficial
for most of my students.

(01:50):
Listen, I say this in my intro, and I will say it again right
now.
You don't have to do this alone.
And that is how I became sopassionate about creating this
space for all of my students, parents, and educators.
So you don't have to do thisalone.
So how do you join?

(02:10):
It's simple and free.
All you have to do is go to theshow notes and click on the link
or go to collegecareerready.
org forward slash join.
Again, that's college careerready.
All one word dot o r g forwardslash join.
I hope you join our college andcareer connections club that is

(02:34):
growing by the hundreds ofstudents, educators, and parents
that want to join.
So again, join us at collegecareer ready dot o r g forward
slash join.
And that brings us to our topicof today.
And let me give a little bit ofbackstory.
So this topic came to mind aftermy second in person or I guess I

(02:56):
should say virtual session mystudents that are part of the
Summer Connections course.
The Summer Connections course isa five week self paced online
course with weekly live groupsessions, all from the comfort
of your own home.
And you know what wassurprising, something so
rewarding for me personally, isthat I have been blessed with a

(03:19):
wide variety of students, everything from high school
senior to current collegestudents from first year college
students to soon to graduate andeven post college graduate
students.
And during this course, as Ihave been talking to them and
reading their reflections andthe responses in their lessons,

(03:41):
I realized.
The importance and the value ofconnections like in their own
words They say they wish theywould have known of this sooner
but guess what you are in luckmy friend because I'm telling
you right now The value ofconnections I Personally have

(04:01):
tons of examples in my personallife As a growing adult where
thanks to connections, my careerlife is vastly different than I
ever would have ever imagined.
And I don't know if I've sharedthis with you before.
I know I've shared it publicly, but when I graduated from high
school, all I wanted to be, andI shouldn't say all, but the

(04:24):
only thing I aspired to be was acertified pharmacy technician.
That was it.
That was my end point, whichnow, of course, I tell you that
career is a journey, not an endpoint, but back then that was my
end point.
I was going to be a certifiedpharmacy technician for the rest
of my life.

(04:44):
Don't ask me why, but in thatearly stage of my life, I
thought, Oh my gosh, I was donewith high school and all I
wanted to do was find thequickest way to get into a
career.
It's not what I do now, right?
Cause now I teach you how tomake that decision a little
better, but how to get a careerthat would be decent paying and

(05:07):
that I would finish my educationas quickly as possible.
That is how I made my decision.
Of course, again, I'm notadvocating for that any longer.
As a matter of fact, I now holda master's degree.
Something that I would havenever thought in my wildest
dreams that I would ever beholding a master's degree.
But the reason I share this, myfriend is because now I have

(05:29):
reached all of these educationalaccomplishments and career
accomplishments.
But it wasn't alone.
I can't say that I did this allby myself and it was all me, me,
me.
I mean, yeah, it was me.
Just kidding.
No, it was thanks to thementors, the connections, the
people in my life that reallyhelped me dream bigger and think

(05:52):
bigger than I ever thought orever imagined.
What do I mean by connections?
I mean mentors, support group, your community, your network,
all of them form part of yourconnections Again.
If it wasn't for these people inmy life first one being my high

(06:13):
school counselor, which blessher heart.
All she could think of is let meget this girl to college and
into a career again, that's notwhat I do now, so I'm so
passionate about what I do, butThat was her goal, right?
And that was my goal too to atleast get a decent paying job
All right.

(06:33):
And then from there, I became acertified pharmacy technician.
And I remember speaking to ChrisLeBlanc.
She was our pharmacist at thepharmacy where I worked at.
She looked at me one day and sheasked me, what was my career
goal?
What else was I going to do?
And I looked at her and I said,I'm going to be a certified

(06:54):
pharmacy technician for the restof my life.
And I remember she looked at meand it was.
It was the way she looked at meand the way she told me that I
was capable of more, that reallysunk in.
Like I remember that moment intime where she looked at me and
she said, Sonia, you're young, you have no kids.

(07:17):
You have your full career, fulllife ahead of you.
Why don't you go back to schooland continue furthering your
education?
That conversation was the onethat led me thinking about the
next step.
And I remember coming home andsharing it with my family and
just even throwing thatpossibility and everybody was a

(07:39):
hundred percent in support ofit.
And I thought, Oh my gosh, whynot?
I have a whole support systemhere telling me that I should go
back to school.
Now, again, this conversation isnot about me.
I'm just sharing how people inmy life.
have made an impact into thechoices I have made in my
education and in my career life.

(08:00):
And it's thanks to them that Iam where I am today.
Now, okay, back to what I saidearlier, my high school
counselor and even my ownmindset of just, Trying to get
myself a job.
It's no longer what I do now Iactually work in something that
I love and I'm passionate aboutas a matter of fact, I'm not
going to lie I have enjoyed mycareer every single step of the

(08:22):
way I've enjoyed the positionsthat I've had the different
career opportunities that I'vehad but I realized that my
students I say my students, thatstudents were not getting this
one on one.
people were not having thisconversation with them.
It was like, what do you want tobe when you grow up?
Like the student would just.

(08:44):
No, right or they would say whatabout this job?
It's high paying not really eventhinking if that career was
aligned with with who they wereif they had the skills gifts
talents And interest in thatcareer.
It was just like that's a highpaying job.
That's the career you shouldpursue again That's why I'm so

(09:04):
passionate about what I do andI'm so beyond blessed to With
the opportunity to do this as ajob, being a podcaster and being
a career coach and news alerts.
Those of you who are in mycollege and career connections
club, you have already gotten alittle bit of a sneak peek into
some news that I will soon besharing on the podcast, um,

(09:27):
about another career opportunityand I'm really excited about
discovery is not going anywhereby the way, of course, it's not
but now instead of doing one onone coaching, I will strictly be
doing only group coachingthrough my career connections
course So more on that, in alittle bit But I share all of
this to say that it is veryimportant for you students to

(09:48):
build connections I personallyknow the value of having
connections.
And by the way, I'm sure youhear some geese in the backdrop.
I'm outside in today's episode.
And you know what?
That's okay.
I'm going to go with the flow.
So what is another reason whyI'm so passionate about
connections?
Because connections can opendoors that you didn't even know

(10:12):
existed.
Like seriously, if you reallythink about it, if your circle
or your network of friends isvery small and you don't branch
out beyond that, you're onlygoing to know what your friends
know or what you come across.
But when you start building yourconnections and start exploring
beyond your immediate community, you might see opportunities,

(10:32):
career paths, scholarshipopportunities.
That you didn't even knowexisted.
and that is why I feel sopassionate about this.
Okay, so you're probablythinking all right, coach Sonia.
So I am already in a studentgroup or a club or an
organization at my school orcollege.
And yes, absolutely.
A hundred percent.
I want you to continue doingthat.

(10:52):
I think that's very importantfor not only the experience
you're going to gain, but thethings that you can add to your
resume, those transferableskills.
That's obviously for anotherepisode, but yes, I think that's
very important.
However, the connections I'mtalking to you about are the
connections with otherprofessionals in the fields that

(11:15):
you are interested in.
These connections can help youwith career alignment, maybe
even discover scholarshipopportunities for students
specific in your field, which bythe way, that also means a
smaller pool of applicants,right?
The more specific thescholarship is, the smaller the
group of students that canqualify to apply for them.

(11:37):
So you might bump into ascholarship opportunities you
didn't even know existed.
Internship opportunities to getthose real world skills that you
need.
that eventually you will beasked about after you graduate
from college, when you'relooking for that first job
opportunity in your career ofinterest.
And then lastly, but just asimportant is the shadowing

(11:59):
experiences, the shadowingopportunities that you can gain.
You can learn so much by justbeing out with a professional
for a day or doing an infosession.
A 15 minute info session cangive you so much information and
can give you insight into thatpotential career.
Do not, students, listen to me,okay?

(12:20):
If you're multitasking, stopwhat you're doing and listen to
what I'm about to tell you.
Do not pursue a career that youhave not met someone in the
field, that you haven't askedfor.
The right questions about thecareer field about what's a
typical day.
lots of other questions that Ispecifically train and coach my
students in my course, butquestions that will give you a

(12:43):
clear insight if that is a goodfit for you.
So many students go into collegewith, towards a career path
they've never even experienced.
And I'm telling you, you'reprobably thinking, it's hard to
get internships.
Well, yes and no, but I'm noteven talking about internships.
I'm talking about just hoppingon an information call, a 15

(13:04):
minute call with a professionalin the field.
Or again, maybe shadowing themfor a day.
these are all the opportunitiesthat you can gain by building
your connections.
Again, when we talk aboutconnections, we're talking about
mentors, support group, community leaders, your network,
all of those people form part ofyour community and your

(13:25):
connections.
Get in the same room as otherprofessionals.
So what does this mean?
Find professional organizationsthat have various professionals
in there.
Maybe they have a local meetupthat you can attend, a virtual
session that you can attend.
Immerse yourself in the field asearly as possible because I
don't want you going intocollege, worst case scenario,

(13:49):
after graduating and realizingthat's not a good fit.
if you follow the steps that Imentioned in my career
connections course You're goingto find these answers Much much
earlier and it's okay if you'vegraduated already and you're
still not happy with your careerchoice The career connections
course will be perfect for youas well.
If you are interested in thisself paced five week course.

(14:14):
Well, I have to say the doorsare closed right now because
I've already started my summercohort.
We've already started and we donot allow any students to come
in.
It's a very closed group.
We're very a tight connectedgroup and so once doors close we
don't open them again for thiscohort.
However, I will be opening thiscourse again in the fall.

the things that they've shared, the comments they have made and
the community that we arebuilding to support each other

(15:18):
along the journey.
We have student interaction, andagain, we really help you with
your own personal growth anddevelopment, to help you find
that career that alignsperfectly with you, or at least
give you the framework that youcan rinse and repeat, rinse and
repeat until that becomes clearand clear in your own journey.

(15:41):
become successful in yourcareer, and that is something
