Singer-Songwriter HALEY COPELLO  hails from Northern California. In this episode, she shares two songs with us on how the spark of an idea can turn into a full song. The first song "Baby, Please" is a great example of how a personal situation can prompt storytelling through song. The next is "Delicious", a funky, high energy tune that simply feels good to the soul.

consummate artist, Ms.
Haley Capello.

music and shares a bit about howto persevere in the crazy music
industry.
We'll be listening to two songs.
The first is entitled"BabyPlease"and is a great example of

(00:36):
how a personal situation canprompt storytelling through
song.
The next is is the song"Delicious", a funky high energy
t une that simply feels good tothe soul.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Engineer
testing.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Haley speaking- This guy that I used to date, I met
him on Tinder awhile ago, messaged me out of nowhere.
I drove all the way to Burbankto see this guy to have dinner.
I show up and he's in hisapartment playing video games
and and I was like,'Hey, youknow, can you turn the air on?

(01:19):
It's really hot'.
And he's like,'Oh, I can'tafford air' And so I'm like
'Okay, well I'm gonna go then'.
So I left.

(01:25):
Haley singing an excerpt from "Baby, Please" Lyric-"I need my
air, so I walked away" Thelyric,'You cried all the time
is', I wrote that next becausehe would le ave m e voicemails
crying and so, so that's howthat lyric came about.
Song Excerpt:"You cried all thetime.
Even though you didn't treat meright"

Speaker 3 (01:53):
Haley speaking And he was lazy and I just was like, ah
, okay, this is what the song'sgonna be about because, I just
felt so much emotion andattachment to it.

Speaker 5 (02:04):
Song Excerpt
for one night.
Couldn't even treat a womanright.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Haley speaking- The songwriting process for me now
is easy and it's fun.
I'm not saying every song isgonna be a hit, but something Ed
Sheeran said that always stuckin my mind was that you have to
get through all the bad songs toget to the good one.
So the writing process for"Delicious", um, I can remember

(02:54):
I was driving in my car andPrince had died and it was a
like a month or two after hedied.
And I remember listening to oneof his songs and I was just
like, I wanna write somethinglike that.
He inspired me.
And I just remember writing"Delicious", wanting something

(03:15):
funky.
His music sounded techno, but itwas also funckified.

(03:19):
Guitar excerpt from"Delicious"

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Haley speaking- The way that Josh creates music is
so magical and makes you feellike, oh, you can do anything.
I would get frustrated so muchbecause I felt like I wasn't
giving enough.
How do you say, maybeparticipation or I wasn't
contributing enough to t he songand I felt, oh, he's doing most

(03:55):
o f the work, but I also w annacontribute.
I wanna be a part of thiswriting process, but I didn't
know how.
Being behind the mic, evensinging.
I took voiceover classes just sothat I could figure out how to
perform behind the mic and ha vet hat kind of energy because I
wasn't confident enough inmyself.

(04:15):
Performing is always gonna bethe most exciting.
It's gonna be the most, um, fulfilling because you get to
perform for people, when peopleare singing your songs and
dancing to your music.
Being a performer is in myblood.

(04:32):
Vocal excerpt from"Delicious"

Speaker 3 (04:44):
I would say, if I could give someone advice that
is doing what I'm doing, there'sa few things.
, there's a lot to it.
I would say, take everyopportunity because you don't
know what it's gonna lead to.
In the beginning, I was takingevery free gig, but that's led
me to where I am today, it'shelped me perform.

(05:06):
Don't be afraid to take chances.
But I think the biggest thingfor me, don't set a time limit.
Don't give up just because youdidn't make it w hen you're 25,
b ecause I've done so many funthings.

(05:28):
And so many things that a lot ofpeople haven't done.
Like I was on the Steve Harveyshow, insane, like who has done
that?

Speaker 6 (05:34):
Steve Harvey-"Give me an audition right now.
Give me a, gimme a shot.
Just gimme a, gimme a song.
Y ou're on national TV"

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Haley speaking- Take it day by day.
Don't be too hard on yourselfand don't let other peoples
criticisms affect your artistry.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
Lisa speaking- And now let's take a listen to the
song.
For your listening pleasure,"Delicious"

Speaker 5 (06:15):
The song"Delicious", played in its entirety.
