Jenn Cody (00:17):
Hey everyone, welcome to the Create your Day podcast.
I'm your host, jen Cody.
Thanks for being here.
So here on the Create your Daypodcast, we get really into some
strategies, some stories, sometools that may be helpful for
you to help create your day, help create your life, help
create balance and purpose andsuccess in your life, and we

(00:41):
talk about all these things thatI just love to share with you
guys, and I actually, a coupleof months ago, put an episode
out that was called Are youBuilding a Life or Are you
Building a Prison, and it hasbeen by far the most downloaded
episode ever in my years ofrecording.

(01:02):
So I want to continue that topica little bit today.
It definitely seems like it hitclose to home for so many of us
, and it's a good question,right?
Are you creating success at theexpense of your well-being?
Is all of the work that you'redoing helping you to create your
day, helping you to create yourlife, or is it actually helping

(01:25):
to create these like prisonbars around you so that you're
not able to function and beyourself?
And if that is what's happening, how can we make that stop?
This is a big, big topic in theworld right now, because the
worlds that we live in glorifiesthis.
I'm so busy that makes mespecial.

(01:46):
I'm so busy that makes mebetter.
We glorify hustle culture, where we think that if we can
only work harder, if we can onlywork longer, if we can only
work faster, that's the only wayfor us to get to our end goal.
It's the only way for us toactually get where we need to be

(02:07):
in the time that we want it totake.
But what do we do when all ofthat hustling actually starts to
take a toll on us?
That drive for achievement andthat drive to be accomplished
feels good in the momentsometimes, but eventually it can
really start to take a toll onour mental health, our emotional

(02:29):
health, even our physicalhealth.
So I had spoken a few weeks agoabout the audit that we can do
and I want to kind of expand onthat today.
I want to help you assess whereare you out of alignment and
how do you reclaim yourwell-being.
How do you do that withoutactually sacrificing what it is

(02:52):
that you're trying to accomplish?
Because that's the problem,right?
We see it as an all or nothinggame.
We think that if we're workingtowards something and it's
difficult that that must justmean we have to work harder
where we need to just workfaster, we need to be better,
instead of thinking well, wait asecond, maybe I need to reframe

(03:13):
how I'm approaching this.
That doesn't mean I'm going togive up on what I'm working
towards or sacrifice those goals.
It just means that I'm going toapproach it a little bit
differently, in a way that isgoing to help me be the best me
that I can be on the other sideof this.
So grab a drink, grab anotebook and let's get into it,

(03:37):
because I really want you guysto walk away from this episode
feeling empowered and like youhave what you need, the tools
that you need to make thesechanges.
So I want to start by actuallyaddressing the elephant in the
room, and that is why do so manyof us equate success and

(03:57):
fulfillment with beingoverworked.
This is not new.
I think a lot of it comes fromwhen we were kids at least, for
me it does.
I can remember growing up andfeeling like I always needed to
be doing something Otherwise.
It was looked at as lazy, and Ialways felt that if I was

(04:19):
sitting down and relaxing, thatI probably was not doing
something else that needed to bedone, and I don't know why.
That's why so many of us youknow how so many of us operate,
but it absolutely is there.
I've spoken to thousands andthousands of people and they've
told me and I'm certainly intouch with this as well that you

(04:42):
know, if they're sitting downand relaxing or reading a book
or watching TV, and somebodycomes home, do you jump up out
of your chair and start actinglike you were doing something.
Why do we do that?
Why, you know.
Why do we think that it's a badthing to be taking care of
ourselves?
And for a lot of us, it'sreally.

(05:03):
You know just how we werebrought up or what we've seen in
society.
We've been taught that successrequires sacrifice, and it
absolutely does.
Absolutely, there will besacrifices along the way, and
that can be sacrificing, youknow, sleep, sacrificing one
thing for another, but it shouldnot mean sacrificing our health

(05:28):
, sacrificing our relationships,sacrificing our well-being.
It just should not be that way.
So, while hard work isdefinitely important, there's a
really fine line between beingdriven and being drained, and
that line is becoming more andmore blurred as we move forward

(05:51):
in the world right now.
And here's the thing successachieved at the expense of your
well-being.
It's not sustainable.
So I'm going to tell you rightnow if you are in that camp and
you feel like you are just going, going, going, going all the
time, you are not going to beable to get to the end game, the

(06:12):
end goal, and feel good aboutyourself.
What are you losing along theway?
Like, you may hit the goalsthat you're after, but at what
cost?
There's burnout, there'schronic stress.
Really, health issues are onthe rise as a price that we're
paying when we ignore thewarning signs.
We think, you know, we're justtired because we have too much

(06:33):
going on, or those headachesthat we have are because we were
looking at the computer toolong.
You know, there's so manydifferent things that are
affecting our health that wedon't even realize it.
And then let's not forget theemotional part, right?
Because the emotional toll iswhere we feel disconnected from
the people we love.
We are losing joy in theprocess of our every day and

(06:58):
we're constantly chasing thatnext thing, where's the next
shiny object that I need to gorun after, without ever actually
feeling fulfilled.
So if all of this is hitting youand you're saying like, oh, wow
, that sounds like me.
You are absolutely not alone, and there's actually good news.

(07:18):
This does not have to be theway that you live.
This does not have to stay aspart of your everyday.
So we've identified the problemright.
We already know the problem ishustling and overworking and
feeling.
It's not just the action ofdoing it, it's actually that
mindset of thinking that that'sthe way that.

(07:39):
That's the way for us toactually get where we want to go
, and there's a solution to that.
So I'm going to walk youthrough a different process this
time, and this is a three-stepprocess that's going to help you
evaluate where you're kind ofout of balance, where are things
not in alignment for you andwhat are the actions that you

(08:00):
can take to get yourself backinto alignment, because that's
where we want to be, that'swhere things feel like we're in
flow.
Right, last week we talkedabout friction versus flow.
When things are in alignment,we feel like we're in flow, and
it's really hard to have a badimpact on our mental and

(08:22):
emotional health when we areliving in alignment and in flow.
So the first thing I want you todo is take a good hard look at
what you are putting into yourlife, your time, your energy,
your focus.
Where Is your time going?
What are the commitments thatyou have?

(08:44):
What are the activities thatyou feel are draining your
energy?
And then think about the thingsthat truly matter to you and
ask yourself are youprioritizing them?
Are you actually prioritizingwhat truly matters or are you
just reacting to the externalpressure and just doing what you

(09:07):
think should be done?
Because this first step is aboutgetting super honest.
If we can't be honest withourselves, we're never going to
make change.
So the first step is get honestand ask yourself, like, if
you're spending 12 hours a dayworking but neglecting your
relationships, that's a red flag.
So write down everything thatyou're currently investing your

(09:31):
time in, your energy into, andbe brutally honest.
If you want there to be somechange at the end of this, you
have to be honest with yourselfand then, once you've assessed
that, once you actually havelooked at where you're putting
your time and your energy, let'sevaluate what's the return on
that investment.
For each activity that youwrote down that's draining, you

(09:55):
ask yourself is this activitybringing me closer to my goals?
Actually, I'm going to give youa few things to ask yourself so
you can write them down.
What's the first thing?
Is this bringing you closer toyour goals?
Does this add value to yourlife, or is it just busy work
and I'm going to come back tothat in a second.

(10:15):
And then, how does it make youfeel?
Does it make you feel energizedor does it make you just feel
freaking, exhausted?
Everything that you are puttingyour time and energy into this
is what you're going to askyourself Closer to your goals,
yes or no?
Add value to your life or justbusy work, or is it making you
feel energized or exhausted?

(10:36):
So I want to go back for asecond to the adding value
versus just being busy work.
I know that when you are trying, when we I'm not going to say
you, because I'm part of thisequation too when we are trying
to accomplish something reallyimportant to us, so that can be.

(10:58):
I recently not too recently, about six months ago I moved and
when I had to gather upeverything in my house, like
that was something I needed toaccomplish, I knew I needed to
do it.
There was no way around it,right, I had to actually pack up
all of my things and move frompoint A to point B.
So there was no getting aroundit.

(11:20):
But I found myself once in awhile spending some time kind of
like measuring things, seeingwhere I was going to put things,
drawing out things on paper, like, can I do this, can I do
that?
That's just busy work.
That's me avoiding whatactually had to be done.
We do the same thing in work.

(11:42):
Right, if you're trying tobuild a business, if you're
trying to finish a project, areyou actually doing the things
that are going to bring you tothe end result, or are you doing
things to keep busy, so thatyou feel like you're being
active but you're not actuallygetting anywhere?

(12:03):
And this step asking yourselfthose questions is how you
identify what is truly worthyour time and what's not.
So think about it.
How many things did you writedown that are bringing you
closer to your goals, how manythings are actually adding value
to your life, and how many ofthose things make you feel

(12:26):
energized?
I'm going to guess right nowthat chances are.
If you had two columns thingsthat make you feel good, things
that make you feel drained.
The ones that are making youfeel good are probably doing all
three.
They're bringing you closer toyour goals, they're adding value

(12:46):
to your life and they're makingyou energized.
The things that you're doingthat make you feel drained are
probably busy work right, because that's what makes us
feel exhausted.
That's the hamster wheel, andit's the hamster wheel of life.
We all are on it at one time oranother.
But once we identify what istruly worth our time and what's

(13:07):
not, then we can realize whatare some of the things that
we're putting our energy intothat aren't moving the needle,
that aren't actually getting uscloser to where we're going.
Those are the things that arecosting us more than they're
giving us that we're not gettinga return on investment there.
The busy work that we do.

(13:27):
It might make us feel likewe've been active all day.
It's one of those.
It's a talking point for howbusy we are air quotes, a
talking point for the burnout.
Oh, I'm so burned out.
I have so much going on.
I have so much to do this week.
Yeah, we all have things to do.
How many of those things do weneed to do?

(13:49):
Or how many of them are justadding to our being busy?
What are the return oninvestment that you're getting
on the things that we'respending our time on?
And then, once we know thatinformation because we were
really honest right when we madethis list.
We were really really honest.
So then we can realign ourpriorities based on this

(14:14):
discovery.
So what does that mean?
How do we realign ourpriorities?
Well, that is going to requiresetting boundaries around our
time right, like can we setboundaries that?
You know, if eating dinnerevery night with your family is

(14:35):
really really energizing to youand that connection is what
drives you, then that has to bea boundary for you.
What drives you, then that hasto be a boundary for you.
You need to have a hardboundary, like I am not going to
be focused on other thingsduring this hour.

(14:55):
I am going to be present withmy family, and you know what.
We all have different work hours.
We all have different jobs thatwe have to do, and sometimes
people work shift work, wheremaybe you go into work at four
o'clock in the afternoon oryou're working overnight and
your schedule is not conduciveto having dinner every night.
That doesn't mean you can't seta boundary around a different

(15:17):
hour for you to connect.
We have in our power the way tomake these things work for us,
and sometimes we have to becreative about it.
What can we delegate.
What can we eliminate?
Never mind delegate, but whatare the things that aren't
serving us that we can move offof our plate in one way or

(15:37):
another?
Some of them can be eliminatedentirely, and if they can't, can
they be delegated entirely?
And if they can't, can they bedelegated?
And then we also want to carveout some time for our self-care,
for our relationships, for thehobbies that make us happy.
And that doesn't mean that youhave to go away for a week to a
yoga retreat although that wouldbe fun, and I do have a retreat

(15:59):
every year that you're welcometo come to but sometimes carving
out time for self-care can looklike reading for 10 minutes
before you close welcome to cometo.
But sometimes carving out timefor self-care can look like
reading for 10 minutes beforeyou close your eyes at night,
because that's something thatbrings you joy.
Instead of taking a showertomorrow night, take a bath and
light a candle.
It doesn't have to be threehours long, let it be 10 minutes

(16:22):
, 15 minutes.
Carve out time for yourrelationships.
If you don't have time for along date, night of dinner and a
movie or a day out in the city, make a coffee date.
Sit down and have 15, 20minutes of connection during the
times that you can.
Prioritizing your presence inthose moments will make a

(16:44):
difference, because success isnot just about what we achieve.
It literally is about how wefeel while we are achieving it.
I don't know too many peoplethat would call themselves
fulfilled, who are miserablewhile they're successful.
That fulfillment comes withfeeling happy and satisfied and

(17:08):
peaceful about how we achieveour success.
So realigning those prioritiescan be definitely a little
uncomfortable, especially ifyou're used to saying yes to
everything, which I know many ofus are yes people.
That's a whole other episode, but trust me, I promise the
long-term benefits ofreprioritizing really are worth

(17:31):
it.
So I'm going to give you a quickexample of how this works in
real life, because I myself havespent the past few years
building my business right andthere was a time that I found
myself constantly exhausted andextremely irritable and that's
not me.
I don't feel comfortable inthat skin.

(17:51):
I felt like I wasn't myself.
But I also felt like this was anecessary part of my journey.
I always felt like I was on andI always had to be on and I
just I never felt good.
I never felt like, even ifthings were going really well
and you know, the podcast wasdoing great and people were

(18:13):
coming to my retreats and I hadtons of coaching clients and
business was going really, really, really well.
I still felt super burnt outand not like myself.
So I spent some time doing thisprocess and realized that there
were so many hours every weekthat I was spending my time on

(18:36):
that.
I could either eliminate ordelegate, and I actually, at one
point, just for a short time, Ihad someone come in and help me
to get some things off my plateand it really made all the
difference.
I was honestly like sleepingbetter, knowing that I didn't
have to do everything by myself.
I noticed that I never was off.

(19:00):
I was just on all the time.
If something came through in myemail at 10 o'clock at night or
at five o'clock in the morning,I was responding to it, and
it's just not a sustainable wayto survive.
So I really spent some timereassessing where I put my time,
where I put my energy, andstarted blocking off time on my

(19:24):
calendar for things that I wantto do, and I am a huge proponent
for using your calendar foreverything that you want to
accomplish.
I'm going to put in the shownotes a link to the time
management course that I have.
If you have not taken it, itreally makes a huge difference.
So absolutely take advantage ofit and within a few weeks I

(19:52):
noticed oh okay, now I'm feelinga little more energized and I'm
actually more productive.
I showed up differently for myfamily, I showed up differently
for my business and it feltsustainable.
It feels sustainable.
So what I would love for youguys to do this week is take
about 20, 30 minutes and gothrough this, write down where

(20:14):
are you putting your energy andthen evaluate what's the return
on investment.
Are there things that you cando to realign?
What can you delegate, what canyou eliminate?
And this does not have to be amassive overhaul.
Small shifts lead to bigresults.
It's just about beingconsistent, and consistency will

(20:37):
change your life.
I promise you that Consistencywill change your life.
So that's all I have for youthis week.
I would love for you to let meknow if you implement this.
Let me know how it's going.
