Speaker 1 (00:12):
way, hey, hey, it's
another great day in the world
and life of the crotchety oldmen podcast.
Hi, I'm gary smith, one of theco-hosts of the crotchety old
men podcast, and today we haveall of us in the house, my main
man, george, and, of course, paul PC Clements.
Good afternoon, good morningand good evening to my brothers.
How's it going, fellas?
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Oh, definitely going
well, going well, going well.
I'm six feet above, which isabout as tall as I'm ever going
to get in this life, and all ofyou all know what that means.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
so, uh, I'm doing
great I just want to clarify
something, or do I need to goback and edit it?
Did you say you were six feettall?
Is that what?
Speaker 2 (00:54):
you said.
I said I'm six feet above.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Six feet above, as in
above ground I just want to
make sure, man, I'm like tell mewhen you get older you shrink,
you don't grow.
Yeah, well, I'm definitelyshrinking Another six feet tall.
Okay, all right.
Well as you can see I'm good,I'm having a great time already,
man you just made my day youmade me laugh.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
For us to be so jolly
.
It certainly doesn't sound likewe're crotchety, does it?
Speaker 3 (01:25):
Well, after we
introduce this subject today,
they may think we're RickCrotchety, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Well, speaking of
subjects, george, what are we
talking about today?
Speaker 3 (01:31):
You know, smitty,
just being in line with you know
it's important to laugh everyday.
It's also important to and I'llsay it like this in air quotes
is to stay regular every day.
So you know, what may beregular for me may not be
regular for you, but you knowyou've got to make sure that you
(01:54):
know you do that.
As we were in kid, did you donumber one or number two?
So you want to make sure you'redoing number two every day.
So you know, I was reading thisarticle the other day and it
was.
It was saying our fiber enrichedfoods the same as taking a
fiber supplement, and I thoughtthat was pretty interesting.
That was what made me thinkthat you know, with our holistic
(02:17):
expert here, mr PC, that itwould be a good subject to talk
about, because here again, youknow it's a subject that people
don't want to touch.
You know they want to talkabout me.
You know it's a subject thatpeople don't want to touch.
You know they don't want totalk about it.
What do you mean?
You know talking about thatkind of thing.
So you know, let's open it upand let's attack this subject
and talk about it.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
All right.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah, well, you know,
george, you mentioned a very
good thing about the fact thatwe don't like to talk about
ooey-go, gooey subjects, and Ithink that's a matter of course
in our society as well.
But there's a lot to be saidabout your poop and what it does
for you and what it indicatesfor you as well.
(02:55):
So let me start by giving you abackdrop.
When we digest food, for it toclear our intestine totally, we
have to consider that that takes10 to 73 hours.
Okay.
So what are we doing in betweenthat?
Okay.
So, george, as you mentioned, the fiber helps tremendously,
(03:20):
because what fiber does is as itruns through the intestine,
because what fiber does is as itruns through the intestine.
It scratches that intestine andit pulls out toxins.
It pulls out old poop that isstuck to the lining of the
intestine and so fiber isextremely important in the diet,
(03:57):
as you mentioned.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
As you increase your
dietary food intake by adding
more fiber to it, that helpsthat process that much better.
Well said, well said.
You know, and you know it comesdown to, you know sometimes we
have issues with that.
And so here back to the articleI was reading.
They were saying that if youtake a dietary supplement,
there's really let me back upit's really no answer yes or no
to that question is is fiber orthe dietary supplements either
(04:20):
one any better?
Because of the fact that itdepends on the situation.
If you're taking the dietarysupplement for a particular
situation, meaning you'reconstipated or something like
that, then yes, that is probablya good remedy for that
particular situation.
But, as PC alluded to, you wantsomething that's going to keep
(04:40):
you regular on a regular basis, and by eating your intake of
fiber type foods you also getother, you know benefits.
For example, if you eatblueberries which are high in
fiber content, it also has goodminerals that will help you in
(05:01):
other areas your immune systemand things like that.
So that's the importance ofeating fiber enriched foods on a
daily basis Salads,strawberries, bananas, those
types of things help.
(05:25):
If I'm not mistaken, almondsalso are really high in this
category also.
So so yeah, I mean it'simportant that you know that we
have the right space at our age, that we have the right diet.
Sometimes it's better to reachfor that can of almonds as
opposed to that package ofcookies.
You know, when we're watchingthe Olympics or whatever we're
doing, because you know it'sbetter for us.
When we're watching theOlympics or whatever we're doing
, because you know it's betterfor us.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
You're absolutely
right, george, and you made an
interesting point about at ourage, because at our age, we're
slowing down, we're not asactive as we used to be, some of
us have have a very sedentarylifestyle and whatnot, and so
(06:08):
when you're eating, you'resitting on this food without
starting a process by where thefood is moving.
Okay.
Second thing is, the food thatwe're eating right now is mass
produced, which means thatthere's a lot of fiber, there's
a lot of nutrients that aremissing in the food altogether.
So what happens is, when youhave a situation like that,
where you're constantly eatingthese processed foods, they bulk
(06:30):
up in your intestine and theystay there and they can cause
anywhere anything fromdiverticulitis, which is a
situation by where the food isstuck to the lining of your
intestine, perforates and pushesthrough the intestine so that
it creates space for the rest ofthe flow to go through.
(06:52):
Ok, that can cause cancer.
So we have to be careful aboutthe things that we eat.
We have to think in terms ofalternatives, as you mentioned,
supplements for fiber andsupplements for nutrients as
well.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Ok so I guess the old
adage or the saying that I
heard because the kid had anapple a day will keep the doctor
away, so to speak, absolutely.
You know I believe I'm correcthere if I'm wrong that George
mentioned a lot of the fruitsand I know apples is one of them
.
You know, certainly, as a fiber, but you know, uh, in terms of,
(07:29):
uh, other things that havefibers, such as your vegetables,
greens, I believe.
I'm not certain on this becauseI'm not a dietitian, by no
means, um, but I know that youknow, in some of your beans and
things of that nature, and we'regoing back pretty much to eat
the earth.
You know, with fruits andvegetables and nuts and beans
and things of that nature, we'regoing back pretty much to eat
the earth.
You know, with fruits andvegetables and nuts and berries
and things like that.
(07:50):
I believe, from the beginning oftime you know a dietary, let's
say, menu, if you will, wasshared with us by the almighty
creator, and so, not that I'mascribing to vegetarianism and
things of that nature, but justbeing mindful, I think, is what
we're all saying, of what youput into your body, because
obviously what you put in themaybe not necessarily always
(08:14):
comes out to your point, pc,because some of the processed
foods and some of the other, especially sweets and sugars and
things of that nature, probablyworks in the reverse to us
having that regularity thatyou're talking about.
So I say all that to say tellme more about, especially about
how we can all, whether you're80 or eight, be regular.
(08:38):
I mean certainly with exercise.
I'm sure that's probably easierfor younger people, but I don't
know, there might be someyounger folks out there that
maybe don't know it yet, butthey're about to attract or
whatever some of those diseasesor discomforts in the body build
up, because we all know thatthis thing doesn't just happen
overnight.
So, pc, take it away.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
All right, here we go
.
So we talked about the addedbenefits of dietary supplements
for fiber and nutrition and soforth.
You're absolutely right, smitty, in terms of you know what
we've been eating, what we'vebeen eating for a long time and
what we're going to face aspeople get older.
So let's look at a couple ofthings.
(09:27):
Let's look at poop, forinstance, and poop tells you a
whole lot about where your bodyis at that particular time.
Number one you want to takeinto consideration, when you go
to the doctor, what he's tellingyou about what your health is
at that particular time and whatto do for that.
Second thing is when we look atour poop, what are we looking
for?
We're looking for size, we'relooking for the shape of the
(09:49):
poop, we're looking for thecolor of the poop.
We're looking for whether thepoop comes out in a nice roll a
nice roll or whether it's comingout in little nuggets or
whatever the case might be.
All of these things really tellyou exactly where your health
is.
So, if I may, let me start.
(10:09):
There's a chart and, for thoseof you that are interested in
delving into this matter alittle thicker, there's what you
call the Bristol stool chartand the Bristol stool chart goes
into these very things that I'mtalking to you about now the
color of the poop and what thatmeans, the shape and size of the
(10:31):
poop and what those things mean.
The texture of the things thatthe chart talks about.
You've got the number one typeis separate and hard lumps like
(10:52):
little nuts that come out, andthat happens occasionally when
we are overly constipated.
And the reason we're overlyconstipated because, number one,
we may not be drinking enoughwater.
Other factors that regardingconstipation, may relate to what
kind of health your digestivesystem is in.
(11:15):
And when we talk aboutdigestive system, we're talking
about everything from theesophagus straight on down to
the stomach.
So what you might think isgoing on in your chest or
whatever the case might be, partof that is your esophagus and
part of your digestive system.
Okay, so let's look at numbertwo.
(11:35):
Number two is a sausage-likeroll, but it's lumpy.
This is especially if it's ifit's brown, it's extremely
normal.
And then you have the sausagetype.
Number three, that have cracksin it that's extremely normal.
Then you have a sausage likesmooth texture.
(11:58):
Now that's begins to tell youthat you have a lot of mucus in
your system and the reason whywe have mucus in our system.
That's our body's natural wayof clearing out toxins and the
toxins go through the intestineand with this buildup of toxins
(12:22):
in the intestine, it can causesome serious digestive issues.
Okay, number five, soft blobs, then that indicates that there's
something going on in yourdigestive system.
It indicates inflammation.
When you have a flat, asopposed to round, sausage-like
(12:54):
stools, that means that there'ssomething in the way of the
canal.
You might have hemorrhoids, youmay not be drinking enough
water and, as a result of notdrinking enough water which is
key because it blows up theintestine and there's a, there's
an easy track for everything toflow through.
So, if you're not drinkingenough water, what happens is
(13:17):
the intestine shrinks, ok, andit creates impasses for for food
and toxins as well.
It creates impasses for foodand toxins as well.
Okay, so these are some of theshapes that we're looking at and
it quite naturally tells you alot about what's going on.
(13:39):
You know a lot of the shapes, especially when you have lumpy
poops, you know, indicates yourlack of water consumption.
So these are a lot of thethings in the Bristol stool
chart that tells you about whatto look for and that I would
suggest everybody.
When you sit down on the toiletand you finish doing what
you're doing, you get up andtake a look at your stuff and
(14:04):
see what your body's trying totell you, because your body's
trying to tell you something, and that's the thing that people
don't get.
They don't get.
This Pain tells your bodysomething, something you need to
be doing differently.
Well, your stool does the samething.
It tells you you know whatcondition your body is in and
what conditions may be present.
That's in your body.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
Oh, good stuff, man,
Good stuff.
You know, having read some ofthose same articles and things,
Paul, I've just come no punintended regular in terms of
paying attention to those things, and primarily as you start to
get older.
But I started doing it yearsago because I heard I think it
(14:50):
was a book called floaters andsinkers or something to that
nature, and it's probably stillout there or not, and it kind of
tells you something aboutwhat's going on with your body
as well, whether or not yourpoop sinks versus float.
It's been so long ago sinceI've read it I don't know which
one is the best.
It is it supposed to float orsink?
You know, but there's a storyin that situation.
(15:16):
So now let's take it a bitfurther, though.
We talked about diet, theintake of water.
I got to believe that exerciseplays a part or role in this as
well.
But now, when the things thatwe look for is to know that our
stool is, as you say, perfect orwhatever.
But there's some things, as youmentioned about colorization.
(15:39):
Now, obviously I know sometimes, if you eat spaghetti, the
outcome is going to be somewhatof a reddish, or I don't know
orange or whatever color.
I guess how much tomato saucewas put in there, but can you
give us a little more depth onthat about far as the
colorization of things that weshould?
You know, I know you may not beable to do a diagnosis we're
not asking you to do that hereon the podcast but what are some
(16:02):
of the things that we should beaware of in terms of?
Speaker 2 (16:04):
color.
Good, good point.
Good point Because, first ofall, let me start by this, Since
we're talking about color fooddyes they put food dyes in
everything.
And they put food dyes ineverything Not for your health,
not for your benefit, but tosell the food.
(16:25):
Ok, so we've got a society thathas genuflected to the God of
profit, to the detriment of ourbodies and our health.
So what happens is when youhave things like tomato sauce,
they put red dyes and purpledyes in that.
When you eat meat, they'reputting red dyes and purple dyes
and blue dyes in the meat.
(16:46):
So what that does is thatcolors or discolors the poop.
When we come out and we want topay attention to that because
we don't want to absorb a lot ofdyes, and I'll tell you why
because we're melanated peoplethose dyes will disrupt the
natural light flow within us,and melanin is nothing but light
(17:10):
.
Energy is what that is.
So when you've got a blockageof ultraviolet light that comes
into your body because of thefoods that we eat, then your
penile gland is not operating atthe optimum level and you need
another charge.
But let's get back to thecoloration of poop.
(17:31):
Poop normally is brown andthere can be variations of brown
.
Brown is normal when it getsdark brown, that might be due.
Or greenish a dark greenishcolor, that's due.
A lot of times my poop getslike that when I eat a lot of
green vegetables like collardgreens.
(17:52):
Cabbage doesn't do itnecessarily, but everything in
the green family darkens my poopand it darkens most people's
poop.
You mentioned the discolorationslike reddish discolorations or
(18:12):
discolorations like reddish.
Usually, reddish relates toinflammation that's in the body.
That has nothing to do with thefoods that we eat and it also
indicates the fact that we'reeating foods with these dyes.
And for us African-Americans,for us melanated people, should
I say, and that's all around theworld.
You know, when you're eatingfoods with dyes in them, it
(18:35):
blocks the light energy thatcomes from the sun that's
transmitted through the penilegland that gives us the energy
and our God likeness.
So you want to stay away fromdyed foods.
What are dyed foods?
They use dyed colors, like Iwas saying, in meat blue, red
and purple dyes.
They use blue, red and purpledyes for the tomatoes and are
(18:57):
the tomato sauces that they thatthey that they put the tomatoes
in?
So there are a lot of foodsthat you got to look on your
food labels and look to see whatkind of dyes are available.
To see what kind of dyes areavailable, Foods that are
genetically altered.
Corn, for instance, is one ofthe most genetically altered
foods on the planet.
They put a virus in that cornso that the corn would be more
(19:20):
easily digestible to us.
But what they don't know iswhat that virus does to our
bodies, so that creates someinflammation and that can
discolor the poop as well.
Then you have poop that's black.
Black poop indicates thatthere's bleeding somewhere.
There's bleeding somewhere inthe intestine, there's bleeding
(19:43):
somewhere in the stomach.
That's transformed into yourpoop.
It comes out black and you havethis smell of iron, which
definitely indicates that you'rebleeding internally from
somewhere, and you need to go toa specialist to look at that
right away, because you don'twant to keep bleeding.
(20:05):
Greenish poop Greenish poopmeans that some of your food is
passing through uh, the, the, the, the.
The poop is passing through sofast through the digestive
system that it doesn't have achance to absorb all the
digestive processes that takeplace, that start from the
(20:26):
pancreas to the, to the, to theliver, and so on and so forth.
Okay, so you want to be mindfulof these foods and a lot of
these foods that pass through soquickly through your system are
processed foods.
Okay, because it takes, Goahead.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
Let me interject real
quick before I forget.
I did mention about thatfloater syncytial, which is best
.
What's the indication?
Speaker 2 (20:54):
Good question, good
question.
Good question Because you and Ihad this discussion a couple
years ago in a friend of oursbackyard.
But good question, so, okay.
So if poop is floating, okay, and most people were.
The medical community was underthe opinion that floating poop
(21:17):
was healthy poop.
But actually floating poopindicates that there's too much
fiber in the system and itfloats and doesn't go to the
bottom.
Okay, system and it floats anddoesn't go to the bottom?
Okay, your healthiest poop ispoop that goes to the bottom,
because not only not only is it,is it, is it fibrous, but it's
(21:38):
also got nutrients in the poopas well.
That wasn't processed duringthe, during the digestive
process, which takes, by the way, several hours.
Okay, so, so, so so, and so thepoop that's floating may have
the fiber but doesn't have thenutrients that way to poop down
and make it float down into thetoilet.
(21:59):
Does that answer your question?
Speaker 1 (22:02):
sir.
Yes, sir, it definitely does, because you want to know what
you know.
If your poop is floating toomuch, then obviously you need to
cut back on, I guess, fiber orwhat have you, and if you're
sinking, I would imagine that,ok, you must be in a pretty
decent situation.
Talked about the importance ofwater and exercise and stuff
(22:22):
like that.
Now, there is a reason why, sometimes, when you have a
movement that is so strong thatyou can't stay in the bathroom
with yourself, and then there'sother times when you know you
got people anywhere, my poopdon't stink, and so, uh, I've
experienced both, so I'm sureyou have my brother I'm from the
(22:49):
uh opinion of latter.
My poop don't stink.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
Well, mine either.
That's why we scrotchy andthat's why we old men.
But you know, smell isimportant as well, and the
Bristol chart really spells allof this out.
They talk about food coloring, they talk about the structure of
the bowel movement, and smellis also important.
So let's talk about smell.
(23:19):
For instance, smell poop, usually normally by all human
indicators doesn't smell goodOkay, indicators doesn't smell
good, Okay.
So if you have a poop that youknow normally doesn't smell good
, then okay, that's good.
But now let's say the smellchanges and the smell is bad,
(23:40):
okay.
Then that indicates thatsomething has transpired in your
body that's not getting theproper amount of breakdown, okay
.
And it comes out rancid.
It's almost like garbage thatsits in a garbage can for a long
time and you get that ranciditysmell.
And we, as United StatesAmericans, we eat a lot of meat,
(24:07):
and meat is acidic, and so whatit does is raise the acidic
value in your body instead ofhaving a pH level of seven or
above, and I'm not going to gointo the pH values at this
particular juncture.
However, what I will say isthis is that the more acidic
(24:28):
environment that your body is ineternally, then you're going to
get those bad smells okay, orthere might be something even
more acute that's going on inyour body that'll create a bad
smell.
You might have a digestivedisorder that needs to be looked
at by a doctor, and so theseare all the things that would be
(24:49):
indicative of you know whetheryou're healthy, whether you need
to go see a doctor or even aspecialist.
You know, really go in thereand really probe.
Generally, I tell people, especially people that are
melanated, you know they tellyou to do a scope every 10 years
(25:13):
.
Well, because of our DNA andthe difference between our DNA
and the model that they use, which is a white man, those
things are different.
So we need to do things alittle more proactively than
others.
We need to do things a littlemore proactively than others,
(25:33):
and that's primarily because ofour DNA and the way it's
structured.
Okay, so instead of doing aintestinal scope in 10 years,
you may want to do it in five, especially if you've had colon
cancer running through thefamily.
So colonoscopies are notuncommon to do at five years.
All a doctor needs to do istell the insurance company that
(25:57):
he detected some blood in theurine and you're off to the
races when you have a greenishlooking stool.
That indicates that there's notenough that, not enough water
and, as a result of having notenough water, you're constipated
.
And people think, becauseyou're constipated, you don't,
(26:18):
you don't pass any stool at all.
Well, that's not necessarilytrue.
You can pass stools when you'reconstipated.
You can, you can pass, you can,you can.
It's like diarrhea.
People think that diarrhea is arunny, runny, runny, runny kind
(26:39):
of thing.
But before diarrhea gets runny, diarrhea is actually has a
hardening surface to itinitially, before it gets to be
runny.
That's when it gets worse.
Okay, so the greenery indicatesthat, especially if it's light
green or a yellowish, thatthere's some constipation in
your system.
Speak so that you can get thatout of there, because as you're
(27:11):
constipated, there are toxins inthat stool that builds up in
your colon and it sticks to thecolon, and that's something you
really don't want.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
Hey, that's all good
information.
So, as we wrap this up, I justhad one other question.
So when you go for a physical, the doctor usually gives you
that little card and then Ithink there's a commercial on TV
, cologuard or something.
What is that really?
Because here again, that's onlyonce a year and I don't want
(27:39):
people to be getting a falseimpression of what's actually
going on here.
But what is that actuallylooking for and what is that
actually doing?
Speaker 2 (27:46):
Actually it's looking
for and that's a very good
point, george.
What that Cologuard does is ittakes a sample of your stool and
ships it to a clinic, alaboratory, and what they're
looking for is they're lookingfor blood in the stool, they're
looking for the DNA compositionof that stool and to find out if
(28:07):
there are any adverse DNAproducts in the stool, such as
colon cancer, such asdiverticulitis, such as celiac
disease.
All of these have indicatorsand they pick up those
(28:29):
indicators in that stool.
Now that does not satisfy thefact that if your doctor is
concerned about whether you havecancer or not, you still have
to go through that colonoscopy, which is a scope they put you to
sleep, of course, and it's ascope that goes right through
your colon.
And it's a scope that goesright through your colon and it
(28:53):
looks at whether you havediverticulum which creates
diverticulitis, um, uh, whetheryou have a, a, a cancerous cell
in the colon or whatever.
So there are two very differentways of looking at um,
digestive and colon tractdisease in your body, george,
and that that's a.
That's a good point.
I'm glad you asked that.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
Well, absolutely so.
Hey guys, it's been some goodinformation shared here.
Hopefully our listeners willtake advantage of that and
actually go to that chart thatPC mentioned and, you know, make
sure they're in good health,because that's what we're all
about here.
On the Crotchet, Omen is notonly, like we've said before,
(29:33):
it's good to be financially fit,but without your health you
really have nothing.
So, with that said, what kindof words of wisdom we got to
take us home with.
I see Smitty smiling, so I'massuming he's got something over
there written down what you got, Smitty.
Speaker 1 (29:51):
Well, you know, I'm
assuming he's got something over
there written down what you gotSmitty.
Well, you know, I'm going backto my old mainstay, John Maxwell
, and it's just a quote thatgoes something like this Life is
like riding in a taxi.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Whether you're going
anywhere or not, the meter is
always ticking.
I like that.
I like that spinning Cleverbrother Clever.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
And with that said,
if you didn't know, now you know
, peace, take care, thank you.
