Headlines: Australia and 27 other countries demand end to war in Gaza

Australia’s 48th Parliament has officially commenced, with a speech by Governor-General Sam Mostyn in the Senate. 

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has issued a joint statement signed by the foreign ministers of 27 other countries, calling for an immediate end to the war in Gaza and condemning the Israeli government’s aid delivery model. 

A former officer convicted in connection with the shooting of Breonna Taylor has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison by a U.S. Judge.

It's Tuesday, the twenty second of July. Here's what's making
headlines this evening.

Australia's forty eighth Parliament has officially commenced. It marks the
first return to parliament since the May election. During a
speech to the Senate, Australia's Governor General Sam Mouston acknowledged
the government's majority female cabinet, saying for the first time
in Australia's history, women make up the majority of the
federal Cabinet. The forty eighth Parliament as a whole is

also the most gender balanced in Australian history, with one
hundred and twelve women and one hundred and fourteen men
elected across both houses. At the last election, In an
unexpected move, One Nation Senator Pauline Hanson nominated Independent Senator
David Pocock for the position of Senate President. Pocock declined
the nomination and admitted he was surprised by Hanson. In

the end, Labour's Sue Line Zones was elected Senate President.

Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong has issued a joint statement
signed by the foreign ministers of twenty seven other countries
calling for an immediate end to the war in Gaza
and condemning the Israeli government's aid delivery model. It comes
after reports at least eighty five Palestinians were killed by
Israeli troops trying to access aid on Sunday. The statement

noted that over eight hundred Palestinians in total have been
killed while seeking aid. It said, quote, the suffering of
civilians in Gaza has reached new depths. The Israeli government's
aid delivery model is dangerous, fuels instability, and deprives Gazans
of human dignity. The statement also acknowledged the hostages held
captive Bayhamas since the seventh of October twenty twenty three,

and called for their immediate and unconditional release.

A former officer convicted in connection to the shooting of
Briona Taylor has been sentenced in nearly three years in
prison by a US judge. It comes days after the
Department of Justice recommended Brett Hankerson be sentenced to one
day in jail. Twenty six year old Briona Taylor died
after being shot multiple times during a botched police raid
of her home in March twenty twenty. Police were investigating

a suspected drug operation linked to Taylor's ex boyfriend. No
drugs were found in the apartment. Hankerson, a former Kentucky
police officer, was convicted for using excessive force during the raid.
It follows suggestions the previous Biden administration pursued unfair processes
to convict Hankerson. However, he has now been sentenced to
thirty three months in prison, followed by three years of

supervised probation.

And today's good news, Researchers in Scotland are using artificial
intelligence to improve skin cancer diagnosis in remote areas. The
team at Edinburgh's Harriet Watt University set out to create
accessible technology for rural patients everywhere using AI advancements in medicine.
PhD candidate Tess Watt has now developed a prototype quote

showcasing how AI can analyze images of skin lesions and
flag potential risks for further medical review. The system does
not require Internet access to work and is relatively cheap
to make. Patients can take a picture of their skin
using the device, which analyzes the picture using state of
the art image classification findings are then shared with a

local GP. Scottish health authorities will review the device before
a pilot program is launched, hopefully in the next year
