It's Friday, the seventeenth of October. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers is in Washington, DC, where he's
expected to meet with officials to discuss Australia US trade
tensions amid the recent tariffs. In a press conference this morning,
the Treasurer said his goal is to quote promote Australia
as an investment destination. Chalmers added that Australia's interests are
best served by more trade, not by more trade barriers.

It comes ahead of a highly anticipated meeting between Prime
Minister Anthony Alberizi and US President Donald Trump on Monday.
It will be the pair's first formal in person meeting
after several other planned talks fell through. The leaders are
expected to discuss a range of issues, including defense spending,
tariffs and the Orcus Agreement.

Five people have been taken to hospital in Northern Queensland
after chemical leaks were detected at two Australia Post offices.
Emergency services were called to an os Post facility in
Townsville and another in Charter's towers more than one hundred
kilometers to the southwest of Townsville. On Friday morning, it's
understood os Post workers were exposed to a hazardous insecticide

from the same leaking package, which was processed through both sites.
In total, five patients were taken to hospital in a
stable condition and have since been discharged as investigations continue.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
US President Donald Trump has threatened to take action against
Hamas after reports the group has been killing Palestinians in Gaza.
It follows a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, which
saw the release of hostages and prisoners earlier this week.
On Wednesday, footage began circulating online which appears to show
several public executions by Hamas against rival factions within Gaza.

In opposed to his platform to social on Thursday, Trump wrote,
if Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was
not the deal, we will have no choice but to
go in and kill them. Trump later clarified with reporters
that he doesn't plan on sending US troops into Gaza,
but said, quote, there are people very close, very nearby
that will go in and they'll do the trick very easily.

And today's Good News. Give Out Day has had its
most successful year to date, raising nearly six hundred thousand
dollars for lgbtqia plus non profit organizations and initiatives. Launched
in twenty nineteen, give Out Day supports causes working to
improve outcomes for lgbtqia plus people and communities. The organization
received a record five hundred and eighty thousand dollars in

donations for its twenty twenty five give Out Day yesterday,
with funds to go towards one hundred and thirty four
causes into community groups of Rainbow Giving Australia, the not
for profit behind the fundraiser, M Scott said, give Out
Days proof that collective generosity is powerful. This year's results
shows that when communities come together, we can achieve extraordinary things.
