Speaker 1 (00:05):
From the Daily Os. I'm Emma Gillespie, I'm Lucy Tassa.
It's Monday, the twenty ninth of September. Here's what's making
headlines this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has handed down the federal government's final
budget outcome for the twenty twenty four to twenty five
financial year. Charmers said Labour has delivered quote, the biggest
budget improvement in a single parliamentary term, after announcing a
deficit under ten billion dollars. The figure is below the
twenty eight billion forecast last financial year. The Treasurer called

(00:36):
it quote a reminder that we have one of the
strongest budgets in the G twenty. However, the opposition said
the government has turned a quote Coalition surplus into a
Labour deficit through an irresponsible spending spree and what it
called a lack of fiscal discipline. It comes ahead of
the next cash rate decision due to be handed down
by the Reserve Bank on Tuesday afternoon.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
A police chase through Melbourne's CBD has ended with the
arrest of four teenagers and a woman being hospitalized. Officers
began pursuing a vehicle after spotting a BMW driving erradically
in Doncaster earlier this afternoon. Victoria police followed the car,
which is believed to be stolen, into the CBD. The
car struck a pedestrian and was then dumped on Burke

(01:22):
Street Mall before its four occupants fled on foot. According
to a police statement, The group was arrested nearby a
short time later. Two seventeen year olds, a fifteen year
old and a sixteen year old are being questioned by police.
The pedestrian was taken to hospital, but she did not
sustain any life threatening injuries, according to Victoria Police.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
Four people have been killed during a church shooting in
the US state of Michigan. Authorities said a gunman rammed
a vehicle through a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, a
township northwest of Detroit, before opening fire on the congregation
during a Sunday service. According to police, he then set
a large fire injuring eight people. The death toll has

(02:05):
reached four, but the town's police chief told reporters several
others remain unaccounted for. The gunman was shot dead by
police at the scene and has been identified as a
local forty year old. The FBI is investigating the attack
as an act of targeted violence, but a motive is
not yet known.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
And today's good news. Eating fruit could protect your lungs
against the impacts of air pollution. A new study has
found an estimated ninety percent of the world's population is
exposed to unsafe levels of air pollution, with exposure to
high pollution levels associated with reduced lung function. Researchers at
the University of Leicester in the UK wanted to explore

(02:46):
if specific food groups could modify or partly mitigate these
known adverse effects. Using data from around two hundred thousand participants,
they determined that high fruit intake groups, especially women inhaled
fewer fine part of pollutants. Researchers said the natural antioxidant
and anti inflammatory compounds found in fruit could help mitigate

(03:07):
and offset air pollutions harmful effects on lung function.
