Speaker 1 (00:05):
From the Daily Os. I'm Zara Seidler, I'm Lucy Tassel.
It's Wednesday, the twenty third of April. Here's what's making
headlines this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
A man in his eighties is in a serious condition
in hospital after he was allegedly assaulted by a teenager
outside an early voting center this afternoon. New South Wales
police alleged the assault took place on Liverpool Road in Ashfield,
in the federal electorate of Graindler, held by Prime Minister
Anthony Albanesi. A seventeen year old boy was taken into custody,

(00:35):
where police said he is quote assisting with inquiries. The
man was treated by paramedics at the scene and was
then taken to hospital. Police have asked any witnesses to
contact Bowood Police station.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
US President Donald Trump has announced that U S tariffs
on Chinese imports will be lowered substantially. There is currently
an one hundred and forty five percent tariff right on
goods imported to the US from China, which was announced
earlier this month. The President has now said he believes
a tariff deal with China will happen quote pretty quickly.
He added, they're going to do very well, and I

(01:10):
think they're going to be very happy, and we're going
to live together very happily and ideally work together.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
A minor party in New Zealand's coalition government has proposed
a bill seeking to legally define woman and man based
on biological sex. The move comes a week after the
UK Supreme Court ruled a woman is defined by biological
sex under the law. The New Zealand First Party said
the bill will ensure quote the protection, progression and safety

(01:39):
of women. The party proposed the draft law as a
member's Bill, which means it needs to be drawn from
a random ballot before it's debated in New Zealand's parliament.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
And Today's Good News. Paralympic gold medalist Alexi Leary has
broken a world record in the S nine one hundred
meter swim at the Australian Open Championships. Leary's time was
fifty nine seconds and twenty two milliseconds in the heats,
breaking her own world records set at the Paris Paralympics
last year. While she swam slightly slower in the final,

(02:10):
she still took out gold. Following the final, Leary said
she had been quote so confident about the race following
hard work after the Paris Games.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
That's the latest from the Dallyos newsroom. If you're looking
for something else, you can listen to today's deep dive
on how the next pope will be chosen.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
We're going to be back tomorrow morning with another deep dive,
but until then, have a great Wednesday evening.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
