It's Thursday, the second of October. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Erin Patterson is expected to appeal her guilty verdict a
month after she was sentenced to life behind bars. Patterson
was found guilty of three counts of murder and one
count of attempted murder for serving her estranged husband's relatives
a beef Wellington lunch that included death cap mushrooms. Last month,
she was handed three life sentences with a non parole

period of thirty three years. Patterson has reportedly engaged new
legal representation. On Thursday morning, her team announced plans to
launch an appeal in the Victorian Supreme Court. At the
time of recording, no details have been released about Patterson's
grounds for appeal.

Papua New Guinea has signed off on a landmark defense

Dozens of children remain trapped beneath the rubble of an
Indonesian school which collapsed on Monday. At least six people
died when part of the multi story building caved in
without warning. According to local authorities, extra floor were being
added to the boarding school in East Java when its
unstable foundations gave way. Hundreds of students, mostly teen boys,

were gathered inside for afternoon prayers at the time. Search
efforts were hampered by an earthquake early on Wednesday, but
rescuers have since pulled five survivors from the rubble who
were immediately rushed to hospital, including one in a critical condition.
Around sixty people remain trapped, according to the National Disaster
and Mitigation Agency. Agency head Muhammad Sayafi told local media

that rescuers will have to dig an underground tunnel to
reach the remaining victims.

And today's good news, twenty six sites have been added
to UNESCO's list of biosphere reserves. That means five percent
of the planet now falls within a designated protection zone.
According to the UN agency, biosphere reserves safeguard some of
the planet's richest and most fragile ecosystems. For example, their
home to more than sixty percent of all land dwelling species,

twelve percent of mangroves, ten percent of salt marshes, and
eight percent of the world's seagrass meadows. This week, in
ESCO announced twenty six new biosphere reserves across twenty one countries,
including in Iceland, Oman, Ethiopia, China, and France. It's the
highest number of new designations in twenty years. The network

now includes seven hundred and eighty five sites in one
hundred and forty two countries, with an additional one million
square kilometers of natural areas brought under protection since twenty eighteen.
That's equivalent, according to UNESCO, to the size of Bolivia.
