Speaker 1 (00:05):
From The Daily Oz. I'm Emma Gillespie, I'm Sam Kauzloski.
It's Thursday, the eighteenth of September. Here's what's making headlines
the CP.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
The federal government has announced its anticipated twenty thirty five
emissions reduction target, committing to cut emissions by sixty two
to seventy percent. Emissions reduction targets are aimed at reducing
greenhouse gas production. The government's twenty thirty five target is
in line with a recommendation by the Independent Climate Change Authority.
Alongside this target, the government has also announced initiatives aimed
(00:37):
at lowering electricity prices, boosting the rollout of curbside fast
ev charges, and supporting industries transition to renewables. Prime Minister
Anthony Alberanezi said the sixty two to seventy percent target
would protect the environment, the economy and jobs for future generations.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen called the target range ambitious and achievable. However,
(00:59):
the Jians have called it a failure, while the Coalition
have vowed to oppose the target. Australia is due to
confirm its omissions reduction commitment at the UN Climate Conference
in November.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Prosecutors have downgraded charges against retired broadcaster Alan Jones. The
eighty four year old was facing forty four offenses in
total for charges related to indecent assault and sexual touching allegations. However,
some charges have now been downgraded and eleven have been dropped.
Jones is now facing twenty five in decent assault charges
(01:32):
and two counts of sexual touching against nine alleged victims. Jones,
who has pleaded not guilty to the historic charges, is
expected to face court next year. The trial will proceed
without a jury and instead be heard by a local
court magistrate. Speaking outside court last year, Jones called the
allegations against him baseless.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
US President Donald Trump has attended a banquet hosted by
the British royal family at Windsor Castle, his second state
visit to the UK. King Charles used a speech at
the event to celebrate the alliance between the US and
the UK. He also spooked the Orcast submarine deal, which
is currently under review by the Pentagon. According to international
media reports, Trump called the dinner and ceremony truly one
(02:18):
of the highest honors of my life. The president's visit
was met with widespread protests outside the castle and in
London's Parliament Square, which is about forty kilometers west of Windsor.
During the state visit, Trump celebrated the suspension of late
night host Jimmy Kimmel following his on air comments about
the death of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk. In a
(02:39):
post on truth Social he wrote, it's great news for
America that Kimmel has been taken off the air indefinitely,
and tomorrow morning you and I are going to break
down that story in a bit more detail.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
We sure are, but before then, today's good news is
a supersonic plane is being developed by NASA, and it's
getting closer to taking its first flight. The one of
a kind X fifty nine quiet supersonic craft, nicknamed Son
of Concord, can fly faster than the speed of sound
at mark one point five, which is around eighteen hundred
(03:11):
kilometers per hour. It's expected X fifty nine will be
able to fly from London to New York in less
than four hours. The journey currently takes about eight hours
on a normal passenger plane. According to NASA, the aircraft
is designed to fly supersonic while generating a quiet thump
rather than a loud sonic boom, solving a noise problem
that has previously prevented such planes from traveling over densely
(03:34):
populated areas. NASA researchers have generated thousands of files over
two hundred and thirty seven days of ground tests and
system evaluations. Those records provide a detailed history to help
engineers verify the aircraft's readiness for its upcoming first flight.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
And that's all we've got for you from the Daily
os newsroom. If you're looking for something else to listen

We will be back with another deep dive to i'morrow,
but until then, have a great night.
