Speaker 1 (00:05):
From The Daily Oz. I'm Emma Gillespie, I'm Lucy Tassel.
It's Tuesday, the third of June. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
The national minimum wage will increase by three point five
percent from the first of July, following a decision from
the Fair Work Commission that's Australia's national work watchdog. While
few people are paid this actual minimum wage around one
percent of workers, The decision flows through to other industry awards,
impacting around three million workers in Australia. The current hourly

(00:37):
minimum wage for adults over twenty one will increase from
twenty four dollars and ten cents to twenty four dollars
and ninety five cents. The Commission said it chose to
increase the minimum wage by three point five percent, less
than last year's increase of three point seventy five percent,
because the rate of inflation or rising prices, is slowing.

(00:58):
It said high inflation over recent years had directly hit
workers wages, and that a three point five percent pay
rise is quote sustainable. The Commission also added the uncertainty
caused by changing US trade policies had contributed to its decision.
While the government and unions welcomed the decision. Business bodies
and the opposition suggested it could negatively impact small businesses.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
The Queensland Coroner will investigate the death of a thirty
two year old woman who was charged with the murder
of her three year old daughter. The woman was found
unresponsive in her jail cell at the Brisbane Women's Correctional
Center last Friday and died on Sunday. Police said she
had a medical emergency. After the woman was arrested and
charged in relation to the death of her daughter days earlier,

(01:47):
Queensland Premier David chris A fully said there are quote
questions that do need to be answered. He's promised a
full and thorough investigation.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
A fresh search for Madeline McCann's body is beginning this week,
nearly two decades after the three year old girl went
missing during a family holiday in Portugal. In a statement
to AAP, Portugal's police said it was launching the new
search following a request from German authorities. In twenty twenty two,
German citizen Christian Bruckner was identified as an official suspect

(02:19):
in the two thousand and seven disappearance of the toddler
Bruckner is currently in prison after he was found guilty
of the rape of an elderly woman. Although he is
the prime suspect for McCann's disappearance, he has never been
formally charged. The three year old went missing from her
family's holiday apartment while her parents were having dinner nearby.
It has since become one of the most high profile

(02:40):
missing person cases in history.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
And today's good news, four female gorillas will be reintroduced
to the wild in the Democratic Republic of Congo, boosting
a small and critically endangered population. The Eastern Lowland gorillas
were rescued from being illegally traded and have spent several
years at the Grace Sanctuary in the eastern part of
the Congo. At the sanctuary, the gorillas were able to

(03:07):
quote forage, socialized, climb, and play as they would in
the wild. Sanctuary director Jackson kabu ya Ya m Becke
said the ultimate goal has been to help the gorillas
recover from the trauma of the illegal wildlife trade and
the circumstances that followed, and get them back to the wild.
It's hoped the four gorillas will help boost population numbers

(03:28):
in the region.
