Speaker 1 (00:05):
From The Daily Os. I'm Emma Gillespie, I'm Lucy Tassel.
It's Monday, the eighteenth of August. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Quantus has been ordered to pay a record ninety million
dollar fine for unlawfully sacking workers during the pandemic. The
Transport Workers Union or TWU, launched a legal action against
the airline after it fired eighteen hundred and twenty baggage
handlers in twenty twenty. The union successfully argued that the
move was a breach of workers' legal rights. In December,

(00:36):
the airline agreed to pay one hundred and twenty million
dollars to compensate staff. Following on from the settlement deal,
Quantus was today handed an additional penalty in the federal court.
Just as Michael Lee criticized the airline for being quote
the wrong kind of sorry, suggesting any remorse it's shown
quote more likely reflects the damage this case has done,

(00:57):
rather than the damage done to the affected word workers.
The airline said it accepts the ruling and will pay
the ninety million dollar penalty quote in accordance with court orders.
It's the biggest employer fine in Australian history.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
New South Wales police are appealing for information and witnesses
after a fatal public shooting in inner Sydney last night.
Emergency services were called to Forest Lodge on Sunday evening
after reports of multiple gunshots near a busy pub. A
thirty nine year old man died at the scene, while
a thirty one year old man was hospitalized in a
serious condition, where he remains under police guard. Investigators are

(01:36):
now searching for at least one other man believed to
have been involved in the shooting. Police believe the incident
was targeted, with reports the suspects have organized crime links.
New South Wales Premier Chris Mins called the shooting quote
deplorable and disgusting. It's the kind of thing that you
don't expect to see in a reasonably safe city like Sydney,

(01:57):
he said.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has arrived in Washington, DC ahead
of a meeting with his US counterpart Donald Trump. It
comes after Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to
seek a peace steal in Russia's war with Ukraine over
the weekend. Trump suggested a deal was closer but had
not yet been reached to end the war that began
when Russia invaded Ukraine. In February twenty twenty two, in

(02:24):
a post to x Zelenski said Ukraine, Russia, and the
US quote share a strong desire to end this war
quickly and reliably, but that Ukraine continued to seek the
return of its territory from Russia. Last week, Trump suggested
a peace steel could involve quote land swapping between Russia
and Ukraine, though he would seek to get some of

(02:45):
Ukraine's land back. Russia currently controls parts of eastern Ukraine.
Ukraine has repeatedly said it wants a return to its
borders from before Russia illegally annexed to the Crimean Peninsula
in twenty fourteen.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
And today's good News, a ninety seven year old Belfast
woman has become the oldest person in Europe to complete
two hundred and fifty park runs, a five kilometer community event.
According to the BBC, Grace Chambers began participating in park
runs in twenty sixteen, when she was in her late
eighties while recovering from heart surgery. Chambers continued her park

(03:23):
runs over the following years, despite breaking her leg during
the pandemic and another recent heart surgery. Just four weeks ago.
She celebrated her milestone run with the doctor who performed
her surgery last month and has now had a plaque
installed on a bench in her local park to commemorate
the achievement. Speaking to the BBC, Chambers said quote, many

(03:45):
people do much more remarkable things than this, but if
it inspires some people to start running, then that's great.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
That's the latest from the dally Oos newsroom. If you're
looking for something else to listen to, you can check
out today's deep dive on why traffic to certain sites
has dropped since the UK implemented an age ban. Maybe
not want to listen to if you have kids in
the class.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
Spoiler alert, it's porn. We will be back tomorrow with
another cleaner deep dive, but until then, have a great night.
