Speaker 1 (00:09):
It's Wednesday, the eleventh of June. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Quants has announced the closure of its low cost subsidiary
Jetstar Asia, with up to five hundred jobs expected to
be impacted. The Singapore based airline will continue flying on
a progressively reduced schedule until its final day of operation
on the thirty first of July. Quantus blamed the decision
on rising supplier costs, high airport fees and intensified competition

(00:38):
in the region. A statement from the carrier said Jetstar
airway services in and out of Australia will not be
impacted by the closure. More than a dozen air Bus
planes will be redeployed from Asia for use in Australia
and New Zealand. Quantus said it also noted the move
will boost local jobs and drive down fair prices, but

(00:59):
hundreds of jets Star Asia employees in Singapore are expected
to lose their job. Quantas said it's quote actively working
to find job opportunities across the group and with other
airlines in the region.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
A seventeen year old girl has been taken to hospital
after she was shot by police at a pub in
Queensland's North. Offices were called to the West End Hotel
in Townsville on Tuesday evening following reports or threatening behavior
by a teenager with a knife. According to Queensland Police,
the girl lunged at offices armed with a knife before
she was shot in the abdomen. Police administered first aid

(01:35):
on the team before she was taken to hospital. She
did survive, but it's understood the girl underwent surgery for
her injuries overnight and is in a stable condition at
the Townsville University Hospital. Investigations into the incident and police
conduct are continuing.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Parts of La are now under their first night of
new curfew orders as protests continue in the Californian city.
Demonstrates have been escalating since Friday, when federal immigration authorities
launched widespread raids in downtown LA. At least three hundred
and seventy eight people have been arrested since. While US
President Donald Trump has ordered thousands of troops into the city,

(02:16):
California Governor Gavin Newsom has condemned the deployment of military
troops and called Trump's actions an assault on democracy. LA
Mayor Karen Bass has declared a national emergency and introduced
an eight pm to six am curfew to stop vandalism
and looting in downtown LA. Residents in the area must

(02:36):
stay home between those hours. Protesters are still calling for
an end to ongoing immigration raids.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
And today's good news, an international team of researchers led
by Monash University has developed an AI powered rapid skin
cancer diagnosis tool. The technology can analyze multiple types of
images at the same time, including close up and full
body photos, pathology sides, and medical imaging, to diagnose melanoma
with greater speed and accuracy than traditional methods. Monash said

(03:09):
more than two million skin images sourced from eleven institutions
around the world were used to train the AI tool.
Its developers said this kind of assistance could support earlier
diagnosis and more consistent monitoring for patients at risk of melanoma.
Its ability to support diagnosis in varied real world settings
is a step forward.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
