Speaker 1 (00:05):
From The Daily Os. I'm Emma Gillespie, I'm Sam Kauzloski.
It's Wednesday, the ninth of July. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Queensland will become the first Australian state to mandate regular
safety training for childcare workers. The sector is under increased
scrutiny after a twenty six year old childcare worker in
Victoria was charged with more than seventy offenses this month.
In response, the Victorian government announced an urgent review into
childcare safety. Now, the Queensland government has announced staff in

(00:35):
the sector will be required to undergo yearly training focused
on identifying early warning signs of predatory behavior. Staff will
also learn more about safe practices for raising concerns. The
state's Early Childhood watchdog will receive a funding boost to
ensure more frequent inspections of childcare centers. Queensland's Education Minister
John Paul Langbrook said the safety and care of children

(00:57):
is our utmost priority and parents deserve full confidence when
they drop their kids at a childcare center.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
The Reserve Bank's Deputy governor is warning US President Donald
Trump's trade war will have a profound economic impact. It
comes after Trump indicated he could raise taxes on imports
of certain products on top of his current tranch of tariffs,
including a two hundred percent tariff on pharmaceutical imports. Official
data shows Australia exported more than two billion dollars in

(01:27):
medicine to the US last year. Treasurer Jim Chalmers said
he's urgently seeking clarity about the proposed pharmaceutical tariff. During
an address in Sydney earlier today, RBA Deputy Andrew Hasser
said the Central Bank is very, very focused on Trump's
tariff plans. He said quote, the level of uncertainty is
clearly elevated and the implications for a global trading economy

(01:49):
like Australia are very profound.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
The death toll from flash floods that struck central Texas
on Friday has risen to at least one one hundred
and eleven people, with at least one hundred and seventy
three still missing as search and rescue teams continue operations.
The flooding hit during Fourth of July celebrations, when torrential
rain swelled the Guadaloupe River in Kerr County, killing at

(02:14):
least eighty seven people there, including twenty seven girls and
staff from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp. White House
Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt has defended the Trump Administration's response
to criticism over National Weather Service budget cuts, saying the
floods were an act of God. Trump is expected to
visit Texas later this week.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
And today's good news, Mattel has launched the first barbie
with type one diabetes. The doll is aimed at enabling
more children to see themselves reflected and includes an insulin
pump and glucose monitor. Toy manufacturer Mattel also said it
hopes the doll will encourage more children to understand others
with lived experiences outside of their own. The barbie was

(02:58):
designed in partnership with the Resouch, an advocacy organization called
Breakthrough t one D to ensure accurate representation. Break Through
t one D said the dole quote helps raise awareness
and normalizes type one diabetes in everyday culture, showing young
diabetics they're scene supported and never alone.

Speaker 2 (03:16):

Oz newsroom. Now. If you're looking for something else to
listen to, check out today's deep dive on the Northern
Territory police racism findings from a three inquest into the
death of Kumanjai Walker. We had some issues with the upload.
This morning, I can safely say that episode is now
there and ready to listen to. We'll be back again
tomorrow with another deep dive. Until then, enjoy your evening.
