Speaker 1 (00:08):
It's Monday, the fourteenth of July. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
The Australian Bureau of Statistics will run a test version
of the national Census for around sixty thousand households next
month on the fifth of August. Selected households in Regional Queensland,
New South Wales and WA and in Melbourne will be
the first to be asked targeted questions on gender and
sexual orientation. The ABS proposed adding several questions about sex

(00:35):
and gender in twenty twenty three, based on feedback from Australians.
The government initially rejected its proposal, but later backflipped on
some of the suggested questions, which will be rolled out
to all Australians in the next census in twenty twenty six.
Households selected for the test census will be contacted by mail.
The ABS said it will also use this trial to

(00:57):
test access to the census by a MyGov. Head of
next year's data collection.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Prime Minister Anthony Alberanezi, is set to meet with Chinese
President Jijinping tomorrow as part of his second visit to
China since taking office. Before the twenty twenty two election,
no Australian Prime minister had met with President g since
twenty sixteen. China is one of Australia's biggest trading partners,
along with the US, which has recently introduced tariffs on

(01:25):
Australia and some of its exports. Speaking to media in Shanghai,
the Prime Minister said Australia was seeking diversification of our
trading relationships. Albernizi otherwise refused to specify what he plans
to discuss with President Xi, saying I would treat him
with the respect I would give any leader of another country,
and not foreshadow everything a day in advance. The PM

(01:46):
has also suggested there could be an opportunity for Australia
to export more iron ore to China, which could counteract
the impact of Trump's tariffs on steel.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Just a heads up. This next story deals with distress
themes of sexual abuse. A French woman who testified at
her husband's trial for drugging and raping her and allowing
others to rape her, has been given the country's highest
civilian honor. Giselle Pellico's former husband Dominique was sentenced to
twenty years in prison, the maximum penalty for repeatedly drugging

(02:17):
her over a period of years. Dominique then invited men
he had met online to rape Jizelle and also raped
her himself. All fifty men accused of raping her were
found guilty at trial in December. Gisell Pelico has now
been named a Knight of France's Legion of Honor, equivalent
to being awarded a medal of the Order of Australia.

(02:38):
Speaking in December, French President Emmanuel Macron said Gizelle Perico's
quote dignity and courage moved and inspired France and the world.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
And some good news for your Monday. Australian golfer Grace
Kim has won her first major title at the Avion
Championship in France. The twenty four year old defeated Thailand's
world number Twotitical in a two hole playoff after scores
were tied at the end of the final round. Kim
is the fifth Australian woman to ever win a golf major.

(03:09):
It's her second win ever, with the first being in
twenty twenty three. Speaking to media after her win, she
called it a huge achievement, which came after she had
been losing motivation. The AVR Championship is the fourth women's
golf major of the year, with the fifth and final,
the Women's Open, beginning on the thirty first of July.

Speaker 2 (03:27):

Speaker 1 (03:36):
We're going to be back tomorrow with another date dive
all about gold, but until then, enjoy your evening. My
name is Lily Maddon and I'm a proud Arunda Bunjelung
Calgotin woman from Gadighl country.
