From the Daily Os. I'm Sam Kazlowski.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
I'm Emma Gillespie.

Speaker 1 (00:08):
It's Friday, the fifth of September. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Around three thousand people have attended a funeral for one
of the police officers shot and killed at a regional
Victorian property last week. Thirty four year old Senior Constable
Vadeem de wart Hotart and his colleague, fifty nine year
old Detective Leading Senior Constable Neil Thompson, were attacked whilst
executing a search warrant in Poropunka. Last Tuesday, a third

(00:34):
officer was seriously injured after being shot in the lower body.
According to Victoria Police, the accused gunman, Desi Freeman, remains
at large after an eleven day manhunt. Crowds gathered at
the Victoria Police Academy in Melbourne today to remember Verdeem,
the younger officer, as a hero with a contagious smile.
During today's service, his brother Sasha asked mourners to remember

(00:56):
him how he lived, not how he died. The third
four year old was posthumously awarded four police medals, including
the Victoria Police Star, awarded to those killed in the
line of duty. Neil Thompson will be honored at a
separate service on Monday.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
New South Wales nurses and midwives are set to receive
a three percent wage increase and higher penalty rates after
reaching an interim deal with the state government. Under an
offer accepted by the New South Wales Nurses and Midwives Association,
public sector nurses and midwives will also receive a point
five percent superincrease and increase penalty rates for night duty
shifts that's up from fifteen percent to twenty percent. These

(01:36):
increases will be backdated to first of July. The union
has also negotiated better working conditions, including two consecutive days
off for workers and no roster changes without consultation. However,
New South Wales NMA General Secretary Shay Candish said just
because nurses have accepted this interim offer, negotiations are not over.
The union is ultimately pushing for a thirty five percent

(01:59):
pay increase over three years, with the case due to
be heard in the New South Wales Industrial Relations Commission
later this month. State Treasurer Daniel Muki called the latest
agreement an important step towards the long term repair of
healthcare across New South Wales.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Twenty six countries have promised to send troops to Ukraine
to protect the country's security once a ceasefire deal is
reached with Russia. A group of Western allies committed to
the post war Pledge following a virtual summit of the
Coalition of the Willing, a block of thirty five Ukrainian allies,
including Australia. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed twenty six of

(02:38):
those countries would send reassurance forces to Ukraine once a
Russian peace deal was reached. In a social media post,
Macron said, quote for a ceasefire to lead to lasting security,
robust security guarantees are needed. Macron didn't specify which countries
made the pledge or how many troops they would each
station in Ukraine. Prime Minister and the Albanesi joined the

(03:01):
Coalition of the Willing talks virtually and said all countries
emphasized their continued support for Ukraine in its fight against
Russia's aggression.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
And today's good news for your Friday afternoon. An Australian
company has received over two million dollars in funding for
its breakthrough cancer treatment research. Oxylo, a company co founded
by unsw researchers doctor Tom Molly and Professor Christopher Killian
has developed a technology called hypoxycaps, microscopic implants that look
like tiny beads. According to the university, they act like

(03:36):
mini black holes when injected into inoperable tumors, starving them
of the oxygen and glucose that fuels a cancer. This
makes the tumor quote an easier target for treatments like chemotherapy.
The technology is still in its early research phase, but
Professor Killian said a grant from the United States National
Institutes of Health could prove critical for translating the technology

(03:59):
from the lab two patients.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
