Speaker 1 (00:05):
From The Daily Oz. I'm beliefit Simons, I'm Emma Gillespie.
It's Friday, the eighteenth of July. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
US President Donald Trump is threatening legal action against Australian
media mogul Rupert Murdoch over a decade's old letter sent
to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein was a well
known US financier who died in jail awaiting trial for
sex trafficking charges in twenty nineteen. A report by the
Murdoch owned Wall Street Journal claims it's reviewed a collection

(00:37):
of letters compiled for Epstein's fiftieth birthday in two thousand
and three, including letters from Trump and dozens of Epstein's
other associates. The article describes a hand drawn picture of
a naked woman included in Trump's letter. However, the US
president says it's fake. In a post to his platform
Truth Social, Trump wrote quote, I told Rupert Murdoch it

(00:58):
was a scam, that he shouldn't print this fake story,
but he did, and now I'm going to sue. Trump
has also said he's directed the US Attorney General to
release court materials related to Epstein's trial after mounting pressure
from Trumps supporters. An Australian base jumper has become the
second person killed in an extreme sports accident in Italy

(01:21):
this week. Perthman James Nolan died after he leapt from
a summer in the Italian Dollarmites on Wednesday. It's believed
a technical issue with the forty two year old's wingsuit
may have contributed to the accident. News of Nolan's death
came hours after an Austrian skydiving pioneer was killed in
a paragliding incident. Fifty six year old Felix Baumgartner made

(01:42):
global headlines for a record breaking dive in twenty twelve
when he jumped from a balloon thirty eight kilometers above
Earth and became the first skydiver to break the sound barrier.
According to local reports, Bamgartner lost control of a motorized
paraglider while flying in central Italy and fell to the ground.
The cause of the accident remains unclear. US authorities have

(02:05):
recommended a one day prison sentence for a former officer
convicted over the shooting of Briona Taylor. The twenty six
year old died after being shot multiple times during a
botched police raid of her Louisville home on the thirteenth
of March twenty twenty. Police were investigating a suspected drug
operation linked to Taylor's ex boyfriend, but no drugs were
found in the apartment. Taylor's death and the police killing

(02:28):
of George Floyd gained global attention, sparking the twenty twenty
Black Lives Matter protests. Last year, former Kentucky police officer
Brett Hankerson was convicted for using excessive force during the
deadly raid. Hankerson is due to be sentenced next week
and face's life imprisonment. However, the US Justice Department has
now written to a federal judge asking he be sentenced

(02:51):
to one day in prison over his involvement in Briona
Taylor's death. Officials have suggested the previous Biden administration pursued
unfit processes to convict Hankerson.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
And today's good news new scientific analysis shows the world
is making significant progress in reducing deaths from cancer. Findings
from the economists also attribute rising case numbers to population growth,
not an actual spike in the prevalence of the disease.
By stripping out the effects of population growth. Researchers said
the rate of death from cancer has actually fallen markedly

(03:27):
over the past thirty years or so, with scientists fast
improving understanding of the disease expected to lead to further
advances in the years to come, cancer quote will almost
certainly be much less deadly than it is today in
another thirty years time.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
That's the latest from the Daily oz newsroom for this week.
But if you are looking for something else to listen to,
