Headlines: U.S. Govt shuts down over funding deadlock

Today's headlines include:

The NSW Police Commissioner has apologised for the unlawful strip search that led to a class action against police.

It's Wednesday, the first of October. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

The New South Wales Police Commissioner has apologized for the
unlawful strip search that led to a class action against police.
Twenty seven year old Raya Meredith told the Supreme Court
she was subjected to an invasive strip search at the
twenty eighteen Splendid in the Grass festival. During the search,
a female officer quote bent down and pulled on the
string of Meredith's tampon. That's according to court records. A

male officer also entered the cubicle unannounced while the search
was still going. New South Wales Police Minister Yasmin Cutley
said today I apologize what happened to miss Meredith. The
police have already acknowledged was unlawful. It should not have happened.
Newly appointed Police Commissioner mal Lanyon also apologized and said
we've made significant strides forward in terms of policy, practice

and education. It's the first public apology since Meredith led
a class action against New South Wales Police. Earlier this week.
She was awarded ninety three thousand dollars in damages.

Up to sixty nine people have been killed and one
hundreds injured after a six point nine magnitude earthquake struck
off the coast of the Filipino province of Cebu last night.
Sibu's government declared a state of emergency, with rescue efforts
impacted by lost electricity and up to six hundred and
eleven after shocks. The town of Bogo was the hardest

hit civilian center, with almost all ninety thousand residents impacted there.
Government and emergency services officials have released public calls for
medical volunteers on social media, with local hospitals overwhelmed. The
Philippines is one of the world's most disaster prone countries
due to its unique location on the Pacific's Ring of Fire,

the name given to an arched fault line off the
country's coast.

The US government has shut down after the Senate rejected
a short term spending measure that would have funded the
continuation of federal operations until November twenty one. The shutdown
effects one point seven trillion US dollars in agency operations,
forcing government departments to immediately cease operations and terminate all
non essential employees. Negotiations broke down after President Donald Trump

and his Republican colleagues refused to compromise on the inclusion
of increased budget for health care benefits demanded by Democrats.
It's the fifteenth government shutdown in the US since nineteen
eighty one and the first shutdown since twenty nineteen, with
analyst forecasting it could last longer than pass shutdowns, which
could be resolved in a matter of hours or days,

due to permanent cuts to federal programs included in this
new budget by the Trump administration.

And Today's Good News, researchers have developed a human egg
using skin cells in what's been described as a landmark
fertility breakthrough. The team behind the discovery at Oregon Health
and Science University said they've achieved something that was thought
to be impossible, According to findings published in the journal Nature.
The technique mimics cloning technology pioneered in the nineties, which

led to the world renowned birth of Dolly the sheep.
This process involves transplanting a skin cell nucleus into a
donor egg stripped of its nucleus. While several more years
of research will be required to perfect the process. The
study's co author, Paula Amat said it offers hope to
millions of people with infertility due to lack of eggs
or sperm, and allows for the possibility of same sex

couples to have a child genetically related to both partners.
