I'm Emma Gillespie.

Speaker 1 (00:08):
It's Wednesday, the twentieth of August. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
The Victorian government has announced new childcare safety measures to
address alleged abuse in the state's early education sector. The
child safety overhaul coincides with the release of an independent
rapid child safety review. It follows the recent arrest of
a twenty six year old Victorian childcare worker who's been
charged with dozens of child sexual abuse offenses. The state

(00:36):
government has today promised to implement all twenty two recommendations
from the safety review as it seeks to restore trust
in the sector. This includes new mandatory child safety training
and overhauling working with children checks. A new independent regulator
will be established by the end of the year to
enforce more frequent compliance checks. Attorney General Sonia Kilkenny said

(00:59):
the reform will quote ensure greater information sharing and transparency
so we can take immediate action to protect children.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Former New South Wales MP Darren McGuire has been sentenced
to ten months in jail for providing false evidence to
a corruption inquiry. Charges were laid against the former Wogga
Wogga MP in June, after he was accused of deliberately
misleading the New South Wales anti corruption watchdog. Back in
twenty eighteen, both McGuire and former Premier Gladys Berregiclian were

(01:30):
investigated by the Independent Commission against Corruption or IKAK. AIKAK
found that bergic Lean engaged in corruption during a relationship
with McGuire, but did not recommend criminal prosecution against her. However,
IKAK did identify corruption by McGuire, warranting further criminal investigation.
He appeared in a Sydney court today where he was

(01:52):
sentenced to ten months behind bars. McGuire has been granted
bail pending an appeal.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
The United Nations Humanitarian Office has announced to record three
hundred and eighty three AID workers were killed in twenty
twenty four. In a statement, the UN agency said soldiers
were responsible for the majority of killings, which were carried
out while workers were quote in the line of duty
or in their homes. The number is a thirty one
percent increase from twenty twenty three and was primarily driven

(02:23):
by Israel's attacks on Gaza and the ongoing civil war
in Sudan. Deliberately attacking a humanitarian worker is considered a
war crime under international law and can be prosecuted in
the International Criminal Court or the ICC. The court already
has active proceedings against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahoo for
alleged crimes, including starvation of civilians as a method of

(02:47):
warfare and intentionally directing an attack against the civilian population.
Last month, the ICC Deputy Prosecutor told the UN Security
Council that she and her team believe war crimes are
currently being committed in Sudan and that evidence is actively
being gathered.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
And some hump day good news for you. The twentieth
annual Homeless World Cup is set to take place this
weekend in Oslo, Norway. The event sees players who have
experienced homelessness or social exclusion represent their countries in soccer.

two teams of four players each. Across the men's and

(03:28):
women's competitions, forty eight countries will field teams, including Australia.
The Cup is being held alongside an International Forum on
Ending Homelessness, which will see players talk about their lived
experiences Australia's team is drawn from the community street soccer
program run by The Big Issue and is nicknamed the
Street Soccer Rus.
