Kyle introduces his favorite hymns and their impact on his Christian walk, focusing on "Blessed Assurance" by Fanny J. Crosby as the first of five hymns to explore this week.

• Fanny J. Crosby, a prolific blind hymn writer, created "Blessed Assurance" in 1873 with composer Phoebe Knapp
• The hymn was composed in a single afternoon after Knapp played a melody and asked Crosby what it said to her
• Crosby's immediate response became the opening line: "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine"
• Kyle recommends Shane and Shane's obscure bluegrass version from 2006
• The lyrics reflect Crosby's personal testimony and find biblical foundation in Hebrews 10:19-22
• Our assurance of salvation comes from God, not from our own works or efforts
• This divine assurance of salvation is worth "praising our savior all the day long"

Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to the Daily Blade.
The Word of God is described asthe sword of the Spirit, the
primary spiritual weapon in theChristian's armor against the
forces of evil.
Your hosts are Joby Martin andKyle Thompson, and they stand
ready to equip men for the fight.
Let's sharpen up.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Hi guys, welcome to a new week of the Daily Blade.
So on my last batch I took you, fellas, on a journey to the
wonderful world of Christianmetal by introducing you guys to
a song by the band Beloved, andI spent that week showing you
guys that we were born forbattle.
And let's just say I'm feelingmusical again.
So buckle up, because out ofall the genres of Christian
worship music out there, metal'sdefinitely my favorite.
But my second favorite has gotto be hymns.
So I didn't grow up in church,as I've said a lot before, so I

(00:46):
didn't memorize all the first, second and fourth verses of all
these songs.
But since I became a Christianas a teenager, there have been a
bunch of different hymns thathave left really an indelible
impact on me and have helped meinternalize godly truth in my
daily walk.
So this week on the Daily Bladewe're going to be looking at
five of my favorite hymns of alltime and we're going to dig
into the lyrics and look at thebiblical truths therein.

(01:07):
Also, I'm going to be givingyou my picks for the best
versions of each of those songs.
So today we're looking at thehymn Blessed Assurance.
So this hymn was written byFanny J Crosby in 1873.
She's actually one of the mostprolific hymn writers of all
time and her friend Phoebe Knappwas the composer for the hymn.
So it's actually a cool story.
Crosby was blind.

(01:28):
She went over to Knapp's houseone day and Knapp played a new
tune on the piano for Crosby and, as the story goes, knapp asked
Crosby what does that melodysay to you?
And Crosby's response wasblessed assurance Jesus is mine.
So Crosby began almostimmediately dictating the lyrics
for the song.
She wrote three stanzas and therefrain and the two women

(01:50):
completed this legendary hymnall in that same afternoon.
And my favorite version of thishymn is actually an obscure one
, but it's by Shane and Shanefeaturing the Peace All Sisters,
and it was released on theirBluegrass sampler back in 2006.
And I'm pretty sure that no oneever heard it.
So when I had the Shane's onthe show, I asked him like why
haven't we gotten a fullbluegrass album?
And they were like, because, kyle, you were one of like four

(02:11):
people that actually liked it.
But anyway, I'm going to readthe lyrics to the hymn now
Blessed assurance Jesus is mine.
Oh, what a foretaste of glory, divine heir of salvation,
purchase of God, born of theSpirit washed in His blood.
This is my story.
This is my song Praising mySavior all the day long.
This is my story.
This is my song Praising mySavior all the day long.

(02:33):
Perfect submission, perfectdelight.
Visions of rapture now burst onmy sight.
Angels descending bring fromabove Echoes of mercy, whispers
of love.
This is my story.
This is my story.
This is my song praising mySavior all the day long.
This is my story.
This is my song praising mySavior all the day long.
Perfect submission, all is atrest.

(02:55):
I and my Savior am happy andblessed, watching and waiting,
looking above, filled with Hisgoodness, lost in His love.
This is my story.
This is my song praising mySavior all the day long.
This is my story.
This is my song praising mySavior all the day long.
This is my story.
This is my song praising mySavior all the day long.
Now it's kind of hard to readthat and not actually sing it,

(03:16):
but I'm saving you guys, sodon't worry.
So the lyrics of this hymnactually reflect Crosby's
personal testimony about herfaith in Jesus, and this is with
the culminating truth comingout of Hebrews 10, verse 22.
So I'm going to read Hebrews 10, starting in verse 19.
The ESV actually titles thissection the Full Assurance of
Faith.
So the writer of Hebrews, probably Paul, says this.
Therefore, brothers, since wehave confidence to enter the

(03:37):
holy places by the blood ofJesus, by the new and living way
that he opened for us throughthe curtain, that is, through
the flesh, and since we have agreat priest over the house of
God, let us draw near with atrue heart, in full assurance of
faith, with our heartssprinkled clean from an evil
conscience and our bodies washedwith pure water.

(03:57):
So our assurance of salvation iscertainly blessed because it
comes from our heavenly father.
And perhaps the sweetestreality of the assurance that we
have in our salvation is thatit is not dependent on our works
.
I mean, guys, since theinception of Christianity,
people, including the apostlePeter, have tried to add to the
gospel Okay, they've tried toadd works like baptism, like

(04:18):
sacraments, like you know, whiteknuckled goodness to the
finished work of Christ.
But the reality is that wecannot strive hard enough to
gain salvation and we can neverbe good enough to earn it either
.
Our blessed assurance comesfrom God.
It is a righteousness that isimputed to us and that is worth
praising our savior all the daylong.
