We're exploring five favorite hymns this week, digging into their lyrics and the biblical truths they contain while recommending the best versions of each song.

• Second in our hymn series: "Come Thou Fount," written in 1758 by Robert Robinson at just 22 years old
• Robinson became a Christian at 20 after hearing George Whitefield preach
• Shane and Shane's rendition on their Hymns Live album (2019) stands out as the definitive version
• The Ebenezer reference comes from 1 Samuel 7, where Samuel set up a stone commemorating God's help
• The line "prone to wander" acknowledges our human tendency to stray from God
• Ephesians 1:13 reminds us that God seals our hearts when we give them to Him
• Salvation comes through grace by faith, not through works (Ephesians 2:8)

Join us tomorrow as we continue our exploration of classic hymns and their spiritual significance.

Let's sharpen up.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
All right, guys, good to have you back.
This week on the Daily Blade,we're looking at five of my
favorite hymns of all time andwe're digging into the lyrics
and the biblical truths therein.
Also, I'm giving you, guys, mypicks for the best versions of
each of those songs.
So yesterday we did my favoritehymn, how Great Thou Art.
And today we're actuallylooking at my wife's favorite
hymn, come Thou Fount.
So this hymn was written in1758 by a young English preacher

(00:41):
and theologian named RobertRobinson.
So Robinson became a Christianat the age of 20 after hearing
the preaching of the greatGeorge Whitefield, and he wrote
Come Thou Fount just two yearslater, at the age of 22, as an
expression of his gratitude forGod's grace.
So the best version that I'veever heard of this hymn is
actually from Shane and Shane ontheir Hymns live album from
2019.
So they do Come Thou Fount, andas it ends they literally

(01:04):
transition right into above allelse.
I mean it is just chillinglyamazing.
So here are the full lyrics hereCome thou fount of every
blessing.
Tune my heart to sing thy grace.
Streams of mercy never ceasingcall for songs of loudest praise
.
Teach me some melodious sonnetsung by flaming tongues above.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues.
Above.
Praise the mount I'm fixed uponit, mount of thy redeeming love

(01:28):
.
Here I raise my Ebenezer hither, by thy help I come, and I hope
, by thy good measure, safely toarrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a strangerwandering from the fold of God,
he, to rescue me from danger, interpose his precious blood.
Oh to grace, how great a debtor, daily, I'm constrained to be.

(01:48):
Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to
thee.
Prone to wander, lord, I feelit Prone to leave the God I love
.
Here's my heart.
Oh, take and seal it, seal itfor thy courts above.
I mean, there's just so muchgood stuff here.
So let's actually start withpraise for the grace of God.
So the lyric is.
So I'm going to keep reading inthe King James Version.

(02:15):
It just seems appropriate forthese next couple of Psalms.
So, ephesians 2, verse 8, so,guys, we don't work our way of
yourselves.
It is the gift of God.
So, guys, we don't work our wayto salvation.
We can never be good enough.
We can never be baptized enough.
Our good deeds are not weighedagainst our bad deeds.
Our salvation comes from Godand we are given grace through

(02:37):
faith.
So now let's actually talkabout the Ebenezer reference
here.
Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither, by thy help, I'm come of
the lyric here I raise myEbenezer hither, by thy help I'm
come.
So in 1 Samuel 7, we see Israelhas repented of their idolatrous
actions and they turned back toGod because of the leadership
of the prophet Samuel.
And while they were worshipingat Mizpeth they were attacked by
the Philistines.

(02:57):
So Samuel prayed, offered aburnt offering, and God
intervened in the battle andcaused victory for Israel.
So if in 1 Samuel 7, startingin verse 12, or I'll actually
just read verse 12.
Then Samuel took a stone andset it between Mizpeth and Shin
and called the name of itEbenezer, saying Hitherto hath
the Lord helped us.
So Ebenezer, or Ebenezer, orEben-Ezer, it means stone of

(03:21):
help.
So this became a memorial stoneor a memorial site to
commemorate God deliveringIsrael from the Philistines in
this battle.
So then the hymn goes into ourhuman inability to keep
ourselves on the straight andnarrow right.
So the lyric, I mean guys, allof you can understand this.
Prone to wander, lord, I feelit, prone to leave the God I
love.

(03:41):
So Isaiah 53, 6, I mean guys,this isn't just you.
So if you're thinking I'mtalking about you, no, this
isn't just you, this is me, thisis all of us.
But there is good news.
Here's another lyric.

(04:05):
So Ephesians 1, verse 13 saysthis If we give God our heart,
it is sealed with God, and soare we.

(04:26):
See you back here tomorrow, guys, so we can wrap up the week
.
