SPEAKER_01 (00:20):
Alright, guys, hope
you had a great Christmas
yesterday.
Let's go ahead and wrap up theweek.
All week we've been looking atChristmas carols and the rich
theology and biblical truthstherein.
Yesterday we looked at myfavorite, Ocome O'Cum Emanuel,
and today we're looking at theChristmas song Mary Did You
Know.
So this is the most modern ofall the songs that we've looked
at this week.
The lyrics for the song werewritten by Mark Lowry in 1984,
(00:41):
but the musical composition didnot come along until Buddy Green
did it in 1991, so kind of along gap there.
But for the record, my favoriteversion of this song is from
Pentatonics.
I mean, they might be the goatsof Christmas music at this
point.
I mean, they put out so muchstuff.
It's from their Christmas album,That's Christmas to Me from
2014.
This is actually the song thatmade them go viral.
So the main subject of this songis Jesus.
(01:02):
But we are getting to seethrough the perspective of Mary,
Jesus' mother, questioningwhether she fully grasps the
enormity of who Jesus is andwhat he was sent here to do.
So to set the scene, we need togo to Luke 1, and we're going to
start in verse 26.
In the sixth month, the angelGabriel was sent from the from
God to a city of Galilee namedNazareth, to a virgin betrothed
(01:25):
to a man whose name was Josephof the house of David, and the
virgin's name was Mary.
And he came to her and said,Greetings, O favored One, the
Lord is with you.
But she was greatly troubled atthe saying, and tried to discern
what sort of greeting this mightbe.
And the angel said to her, Donot be afraid, Mary, for you
have found favor with God, andbehold, you will conceive in
your womb and bear a son, andyou shall call his name Jesus.
(01:48):
He will be great, and will becalled the Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give himthe throne of his father David,
and he will reign over the houseof Jacob forever, and of his
kingdom there will be no end.
And Mary said to the angel, Howwill this be, since I am a
virgin?
So pause.
We have to reckon with what wasgoing through Mary's head at
(02:11):
this moment.
The text says that she wasgreatly troubled.
Why?
Because everywhere you read adescription of an angel and what
they look like, they seem reallyscary, really intimidating,
hence why the angels, just likein this setting, start out with,
Hey, don't be afraid, do not beafraid.
And then the message that isdelivered to her has to be
confusing and overwhelming.
(02:31):
So wait, I'm I'm going to bepregnant and I'm I'm going to
have a son and he will be calledthe son of the most high, but
I'm a virgin, I'm confused,right?
I mean, which would all makesense.
Her feelings would be justified, but her level of understanding
would very likely be very low.
Now let's go to the song Mary, did you know?
First verse.
Mary, did you know that yourbaby boy will one day walk on
(02:55):
water?
Mary, did you know that yourbaby boy will save our sons and
daughters?
Did you know that your baby boyhas come to make you new?
This child that you've deliveredwill soon deliver you.
Verse 2.
Mary, did you know that yourbaby boy will give sight to a
blind man?
Mary, did you know that yourbaby boy will calm a storm with
his hand?
(03:15):
Did you know that your baby boyhas walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your littlebaby, you've kissed the face of
God.
Mary, did you know?
Now the bridge.
The blind will see, the deafwill hear, and the dead will
live again.
The lame will leap, the dumbwill speak, the praises of the
Lamb.
Now verse three.
Mary, did you know that yourbaby boy is Lord of all
(03:38):
creation?
Mary, did you know that yourbaby boy will one day rule the
nations?
Did you know that your baby boyis heaven's perfect lamb?
The sleeping child you'reholding is the great I am.
And then the outro, Oh Mary, didyou know?
Well, to answer for her, she didnot know all of that.
(03:58):
I mean, certainly not then, aswe see recorded in Luke 1, how
could she?
But she had faith.
Enough faith to obey.
So back to Luke 1, starting inverse 35.
And the angel answered her, TheHoly Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most Highwill overshadow you.
Therefore, the child to be bornwill be called holy, the Son of
(04:21):
God.
Now, verse 38.
And Mary said, Behold, I am theservant of the Lord.
Let it be to me according toyour word.
And the angel departed from her.
So Mary, a sinner, a normalwoman, was selected by God to
get this special revelation, andshe was part of God's master
rescue plan for all humanity.
(04:43):
And even after Jesus was born ina manger in Bethlehem, Mary
still couldn't have known allthe details of what was to come
for her baby and for the world.
But she did her part as adutiful mother and servant of
God.
So as she held her sleepingbaby, she was holding heaven's
perfect lamb, an atoningsacrifice for us all.
(05:04):
The great I Am.
