Bring d Philadelphia is Fox Sports Radio The Gambler.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Coming to you live, ladies and gentlemen, once again from
the National Sports Collector's Convention, forty fifth in fact, live
from here in Chicago, up by the airport. I know,
people get a little hot and bothered when you say, like,
I'm in Philadelphia, you're not. But we're on the outskirts
of Chicago. Tomorrow we will be at Wrigley Field. A
bucket list will be checked by your boy right here.
Of course, Mike Powers with us, ladies and gentlemen. We've
(00:32):
been joined by a great guests all day yesterday and
even more today. And it continues. This gentleman is so talented.
There is a painting up that Powers will get on
our screen on. Murray Henderson is joining us right now
live on The Gambler.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Murray sir, Yeah, are you too? This is great.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
So Powers has it up and he's showing the people
right now. Yep, this unbelievable painting that you did. And
of course it's the Dream Team. It's the Sports Illustrated
cover Charles Magic. Off the top of my head. I
just sat Carl, Yeah, Carl, Charles Magic, is Larry on it?
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Nope, no, Jordan, Jordan and I look at it the
right Patrick. There you go.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
We forgot.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
I'm ashamed I could have come up with the five.
I just saw well, you know, yeah, but I mean
Bird was of course the team, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Yeah, So I'm forty four Murray and that's that's wheelhouse.
So I come to the National here and you know,
that's immediately what I'm getting. It's the nostalgia. It's it's
you know a little bit of like bring me back
to that time. But that can't be what it's all
about here, right, It's a part of it.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
But what is the national to you? I know you
are into the more of the art side of things.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
But what is the national?
Speaker 3 (01:52):
I think everybody has their own definition.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
What's the national to you?
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Well, yeah, it's I mean it's a means to get
people to realize, you know, But the art side of
the baseball, hockey, football cards, you know, like we we
we've always been contributing all along. Artists have been a
part of the card industry. Right now, we have a
bunch of us that are, you know, showing our art
(02:16):
here and and the people are realizing, oh wow, this
is pretty cool. I mean, this is this is awesome
art with cards and some people. But what I what
I really do is I show people my memorabilia that's
on cards. So like I got a piece over there
that's got Gretzky's second career hat trick stick on it.
And we've got some Jordan autograph floors on the pieces,
(02:40):
Kobe Gamemorn shoes with autographs, and you know, just showing
people that that have memorabilia under their bed or in
the back of a closet, we can do something different
with it, you know, not just leaving it on a
shelf for something. We can add it to a piece
of art. And it's you know, art is a collectible
as well, right, So that's that's kind of what it's
(03:01):
getting us known artists twice And I know there's a
few artists here, and it's incredible how it crosses over
the people that collect cards and everything. They come in
and they're like blown away, like oh wow, this is
so cool. And you know, it's the people that have
a great room with with all their sports memorabilian things,
(03:23):
that that love what we do. Yeah, that's what we're
here for. But just meeting great people. And he was saying,
you're in Philly. I've been at Philly four or five times,
and you become friends with people and you see them
here and there's hugs and handshakes and it's like almost
like getting together with a family every year.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
No, and look, we've been part of the Philly Show
a few times, saw a lot of people that we
have made those connections. Of course, we're already talking leading up,
so we knew a couple of people would be here.
But then you see some other people that were like
running trade night or a vendor that you had on
in a previous show, whatever it may be. Forgive me powers,
who was the gentleman? Who's the other artist?
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Victor? Is it Victor?
Speaker 2 (04:04):
I forget that. We just saw him yesterday and he
was with us at the Philly Show.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
So it's so.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Cool, you know, like you said, the camaraderie that you
build up over the years, all coming together at the
Nashville Murray. Take me a little bit behind your story though,
sports fan die hard, Oh.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Yeah, I played pretty much every sport there is, and
that I played junior hockey, played lacrosse, played high school football.
I mean, you know, I played it all. So what
was your fandom where you born? What was your team?
I'm a Canadian, so I grew up a hockey fan
more than anything. But I mean, you know, the Bulls
(04:39):
because of Michael back in the day. I mean everyone,
it didn't matter where you were from. That was That
was the turning point for me watching basketball. I was
a huge Steelers fan back in the seventies, you know,
And you know, basically I followed pretty much every sport
there is, so and that's kind of what I try
(05:00):
to do in my art is show action. Show the
action and the splashes and everything are kind of what
my stuff shows. It's just a little different. It's uh,
I call it exact abstract. So I try to get
the faces and everything as close to realism as I can,
and then the rest is abstract. So it's fun. Right,
I'm gonna show you.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
I have a eight foot mural of Joel a Bee
in my house.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
I'll show you.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
A local artist did it for me a couple of
years ago when I started doing this website, Bill Strobol,
and he has a different technique. I'll show you before
you get out of here. You'll appreciate it. But from
those teams you were discussing, One of those art items
that I have right now is Bernie Karan goalie.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Mask at the house. I'm wondering, like I need to
get that to you, and like, what can we work? Oh,
that'd be so cool. Yeah, I remember Bernie. My wife
won't allow me to the goalie mask on the wall,
and well what if we put it into piece of art?
Speaker 4 (05:53):
That's it?
Speaker 3 (05:53):
That could be it. Yeah, you make it three D,
that's how you do it. Yeah, all right? How about
the bullies?
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Like were you did you appreciate the the flyers back
in the day or now?
Speaker 4 (06:03):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Yeah, I think you kidding me. I've I've had the
opportunity to meet the Hammer Schultz nice. I did an
NHL print called Balls for Hockey Fights Cancer and it
was my dream team of all the tough guys, and
Schultz was on that team, of course, but it was
all the guys from way back in the nineteen twenties,
So basically I had everybody through every era on it,
(06:27):
and I was lucky enough to have Schultz autograph it
and I got eleven signatures on this piece. So we
raised money for Hockey Fights Cancer and I love the bullies. Yeah,
the broad sweet bullies there is awesome. And that's and
that's pretty cool because I'm sure you get hit a
whole lot.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Anytime your piece of art is going to raise money
for something like that, that's going to be pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Yeah, like for instance the one here U. Yeah, my
piece it is on the shirts for the National and
it's all the piece that you can win in the
auction for Saint Jude's and Children's Wish really so yeah,
it's uh, it's part of the big raffle that they
have going on. So I do it, especially a little
(07:13):
bit towards childhood cancer and pediatric cancer. We lost a
daughter to cancer. She was almost seventeen years old, so
that's why I if there's any kind of charity that
you know, childhood cancer or anything, I do. I do
love helping that out because it's very dear near and
(07:36):
dear to my heart. That's unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Yeah, I'm trying to find that picture from my guy
Bill Struggle of my mural.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
You'll you'll appreciate it, but I can't wait to see
I want to see it. I got to see that, right.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
So, Mary, you're here at the National and this piece
you're working on right here, Yeah, completed.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
It's almost done. I'm going to have some kids come up.
I promised kids over the show they come up and
help me scribble a little bit on it. And uh,
it's a lot of people have come by since day one,
since Wednesday, and it was just basically, you know, a
few little lines on it and some pencil sketch and
and I've kind of built it up in front of
everyone's eyes. So I do have kids that love coming
(08:17):
over and help me out.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
It's amazing, it really is. It absolutely is amazing and
it's a it's a heck of a piece. So will
people be able to purchase that at your at your booth?
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Yeah yeah, I mean I said, if someone wants it,
I'll sign it, roll it up and they can take
it out. That's incredible. Yeah, absolutely incredible. Yeah all right, Murray, I.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Don't want to take too much of your time again.
You are a busy man here. Incredible art that you
have everything can be found on socials.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
He's got a great Instagram page.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
It just gave him a follow that's Murray Underscore Henderson
also Murray Henderson dot or excuse Murray Henderson art dot
com to check out everything that Murray has going on.
But again, that Instagram page is awesome and I love
the concepts that you've worked on here from Tyson and
all leave Jordan.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
All the great. I know it's it's a lot of
fun and I really appreciate you having me on and
you guys are doing awesome man.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Continued success, Sir, thank you for a couple of minutes
and stopping by man Er, thank you so much for
having me awesome mixture you followed Murray and if you
miss anything live for the National to find all of
our shows at Foxpho Gambler dot com.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
You can wager on it. We're talking about it. It's
the Gambler.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Live from the National. Hello everybody. It's a Powers production,
is what we say, and it's true. It's real. Mike Powers,
of course producer extraordinary. Does it all for us here
on the Gambler. I I'd lead all conversations by saying
he's the station manager.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
Appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Holding it down, dude, What an awesome time here.
Speaker 5 (09:42):
This has been from the minute we got to the
airport till right now. It's been insane, but it's been
bucketless moments after bucketless moments, been a load of fun.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
You know, it's funny because like we are cut from
the same club, like we are the same style, like
diehard sports fans relive our you know, our through our youth.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
Of course, there's Shane Sane, grab them, Mike, what's up?
Speaker 4 (10:06):
Shane?
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Get in here, man, Oh you got this one here? Yeah,
you hot Bond communications director Shane. What's your last name, sir?
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Let me just get him in.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
Shane Win. Last name is Win, Shane Win.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
That's why I took the card. Yeah, beautiful, It's awesome. Yep,
so Shane Shane.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Obviously we did some video last night live up there
at Trade Night, which was incredible.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Shane, it's insane again.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
I just walk in today and next thing, you know,
there's a there's a whole nother area that I didn't.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
See all day yesterday, all another wing. Yeah, I ran
into that same thing.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
I got over here the last Thursday was my first
day over here, and you know, load in was happening,
and you know, I tried to walk as much the
floor as I could, and then I came back on Monday.
Right now, it's about sixty seventy percent built out, and
I found places on Tuesday that I was like, I
(11:03):
swear to god, I walked this whole place. And then
I'm like, no, I didn't. There's a whole area over
here that I didn't I hadn't seen before. So I
still don't know if.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
I've seen everything.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
I bet, I bet.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (11:15):
So I finally walked the top floor today this morning,
where we've got all like seventy five new dealers you know,
up there, and that's got its whole vibe too, because
it's like it's real intimate and it just like it
is a different feeling to me.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
But it seems like it's really popular.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
The escalator.
Speaker 6 (11:33):
Yeah, you go up the escalator the second floor, and
it's cool because there's so much more space up there
that's not being used yet. So like, you know, judging
from what we're seeing this year, I mean, I think
this thing is gonna set record.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
Yes, that's what it's feeling like, that's what it's looking like.
Speaker 6 (11:51):
So you know, I'm I'm thinking next year, some of
that footprint that's sitting up there, it's not gonna be
available because it's gonna be used.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
He just answered the question because I was one.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
And as you're walking around, is the are the wheels
already turning for future?
Speaker 4 (12:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (12:03):
Yeah, for future ideas? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (12:05):
Oh, I mean, you know, this year was about starting
the expansion right and giving more dealers the ability to
get their way into the National, because we've got a
laundry list of dealers that want to show here and
they can't because we only have so many spaces, you know,
and we've got a whole system in place for you know, seniority. Right,
(12:25):
So if you've been if you've been showing with the
National for forty five years, we're in our forty fifth
year right now, and some have so we've got people
that have shown every year for forty five years.
Speaker 4 (12:36):
You're at the front of the line. Yeah. Right.
Speaker 6 (12:38):
So like when we start opening stuff up for next year,
which we did here this week, those those people get
the pick of the litter. But by the time we're
sold out, there's still a long line of dealers.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
That are like, what about me?
Speaker 6 (12:51):
You know, it's kind of it's it's why some of
that stuff you saw last night up on trade Nights
is so valuable because people that normally can't be dealers
suddenly can kind of act like dealers, grab a table
and set up shop.
Speaker 4 (13:04):
No, I believe it.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
And like you said, it's just something new and from
the standpoint of of who will be signing next year,
could be all do it will be all new names.
Like that's amazing to me. Just walking through bubble Watson
just walked right behind Yeah. Uh, Spike Lee's back there,
Roger Clements, Jerry Rice, the greatest receiver of all time
is right behind us, like literally eighty yards away.
Speaker 6 (13:24):
I just talked to Rice like ten minutes on. Yeah,
yeah I didn't. I didn't seen him in a while.
And I know his agent Sasha and uh and we
had a quick conversation. But yeah, I've been back there.
I mean, yeah, let's talk autographs for a second. I've
been back there now for three hours, you know, doing
stuff and and uh, you know, we're gonna some of
the media are gonna do interviews with Cabrera, who's just
(13:47):
about done sign He's been signing for like.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
Two hours now, huge huge list.
Speaker 6 (13:52):
But we did some really cool stuff with Pools and
uh and and Cabrera. So uh, Dave Hunt runs Hunt Auctions, right,
So Dave has on consignment a ball that is a
five hundred home run club ball that was signed by
(14:15):
Babe Ruth Bonds yep, and then pretty much every other
person that's hit the five And so we surprised uh
Cabrera first and then Uh and then Pools with h
with the ball and got both.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Of them to sign it.
Speaker 6 (14:32):
And they didn't know we were doing it until they
sat down and then we presented it to him. So
like that that home run ball's got now two more
signatures on it. But like, that's what's going on back
there right now. You're like Spike is sitting right next
to Patrick Ewing right which like great placement there, phenomenal,
So you're getting all this crazy interaction between these guys
(14:53):
as well. Cabri Uh Pools just got up like ten
minutes ago and went over to Cabrera and started signing
balls for.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
So that's yeah, obviously they have their camaraderie for over
years being from the same country.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
Yeah, it's amazing.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
And now they're meeting up right here at the National
Shame Win Communications director for US here at the National
rolling out the red carpet. Yet again, it's incredible, shame
like and another thing that jumped off the page at me.
And maybe this is new, it's my first national, but
the activation from the corporate angle like really raising the
bar on some of those brands that are over there
in that wing. And forgive me, I was walking through
(15:32):
yesterday there was this huge setup and like they're breaking
packs with their on the screen. Oh yeah, the chats
happened behind them whatnot?
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Thank you? That was incredible, incredible to sea.
Speaker 6 (15:45):
Yeah, the Breaker's pavilion is really interesting. I mean that's
a whole segment of the hobby. You know, that's just exploded, right,
Like people literally just sitting at their computers watching people
break live. You know, it's kind of like, well, I
guess watching Twitch you know for video games, right.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
You know, it's that kind of it's got that kind
of vibe to it.
Speaker 6 (16:06):
But yeah, you've got a lot of these breakers now
that are bringing that like YouTube vibe live in three
dimensions while they're doing so, it's familiar. So if you're
a fan and you know that you know some of
these breakers, you're going up to their booth and watching,
you kind of feel like, oh, yeah, I watch this
all the time. I know what the format is and
what they're gonna do, but you can reach out and
(16:26):
touch these folks, yep. Right at the same time that
and then yeah, you know the corporate piece of this
that just continues to grow and evolve. I mean, as
this hobby grows and more corporate partners are getting into
the space itself, you know, like eBay would be a
great example, right, Like, it's just such a perfect space
for eBay.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
And you've been with them for a long time though, yeah,
a long time.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
A long time.
Speaker 6 (16:50):
They're a fantastic partner, you know. And and and I
think they do a lot of great things for the hobby.
You know, they make they make things a lot easier
for a lot of electors to be able to do stuff,
you know. And then you add in like companies like
leut x right that have apps where you can scan
the cards. And what I love about that one. You know,
I'll just plug those guys for a second. You get
(17:12):
the lotex up, you scan a card, you can connect
it directly to your eBay platform and be like, Okay,
I just scanned it and now I want to put
it up. Boom, one click and it's on your EBAs store, yeah, right,
which is kind of cool, you know, and so all
these corporate partners see the value and being in front
of like over one hundred thousand people and I'm pretty
(17:34):
sure we're going to.
Speaker 4 (17:35):
Be well over I believe it this year.
Speaker 6 (17:39):
But you know, it's just there's a lot of value
to the corporate partners to be able to do that,
you know. And then you put the auction houses like
a Heritage in and you know, and I mentioned Hunt already.
H you know, Pristine would be another really great auction house.
You know, they are doing so much business online and
being in front of their consumer and being able to
show them what their brand's about. You know, that's important, right,
(18:00):
you know, you differentiate your brand to the consumer and
maybe they're going to gravitate towards your Your auction is
post to somebody else's. So you know, a lot of
people playing in space, and I expect next year you're
probably see even more of it.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
But at the end of the day, it's.
Speaker 6 (18:14):
It's a lot about the experience, right with the experience
that you get as a consumer walking in here, how
it feels, how it looks, how it operates, what you
get to do. You know that it's not just today
walking out lines looking at cards.
Speaker 4 (18:30):
Right. Yeah, you could do that.
Speaker 6 (18:33):
For a while, you know, but I would say, like,
you know, don't blow all your money in one day
because there's so much to see here. Now you've got
all these other experiences, you can be a part well again.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
And I think the proof is into putting. You have
people here that are here every day. You're not here
every day for forgive me Tuesday to Sunday. Is that
when you started Tuesday it.
Speaker 6 (18:52):
There was a there was an opening night on Tuesday, yeah,
for for for VIPs and dealers, and then Wednesday we
opened at three pm.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
All the way through.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Some people are here every day because the energy is
something new. You never know what you're gonna see, what's
gonna find, or what you're gonna find.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
Who's coming through those doors.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
You guys are checking the boxes and then some This
has been a fantastic experience and everybody's having the same vibe.
You could see it, smiles in their face, a lot
of energy, as I said, just a great vibe inside
this building. Here once again at the National, the forty
fifth National, we're hanging with Shane win Man. I can't
thank you enough Shane again last night taking us upstairs.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
That was so cool to experience.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
We would not have been up there if it wasn't
for you to thank you on that of course, and
open it opened my eyes to a whole another.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
Dimension of this. Yeah, that stage up there.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
I'm not making it up like this.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
There's just so many things that are happening here.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
And you know, look, a part of this does go
down at the Philly Show, no doubt, not at this magnitude,
like as far as the level of people coming through
the door.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
But you know, you guys do have trade night at
the Philly Show.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
Yeah, you know, the best of the best vendors in
the area and that make their way down to the
Philly Show. So again, the artist all that, the memorabilia.
So again, the Philly Show's coming up. But if you
can make a national trust me.
Speaker 4 (20:06):
There's nothing like this that. There's nothing like the national
do it.
Speaker 5 (20:10):
It's been so much fun seeing parents teach the hobby
to their kids, enjoy it with their kids. Also, like
all these dads lined out to see major league actors.
Speaker 4 (20:22):
They've gotten the.
Speaker 5 (20:22):
Man himself from Rookie of the Year Henry Rose and Gardner. Yeah,
it's just it's crazy to be like Hey, you don't
get it. When I was a kid, like this is
a person that you know, I I loved it, Like
he was so great and just to see the line.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
He stopped in. It's pretty cool to have him on.
Speaker 4 (20:37):
Oh yeah, nice, Shane.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
One more for you forget out of here, because a
lot of people are checking in all of a sudden
the chat and they want to know, what's the coolest
thing you've seen here this week at the National? To Shane,
You've seen a lot, You've been at a lot of shows.
How many Nationals have you been a part of? This
is my first? God, yeah, it's my first National.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
Yeah, okay, yeah, that makes a friend? What has happened here? Okay,
that makes sense? It is it is going crazy, man,
nice work. What's the coolest thing you've seen so far?
Speaker 6 (21:04):
And look so that that five hundred home run club
ball that I just saw a couple hours ago that
we got those signatures on, that's probably the most unique
thing that I have seen here. You know, there's so
many like one of ones and classics and you know,
(21:26):
and Jordan rookies and all of that stuff. But you know,
to me, the things that there's absolutely zero percent chance
that you can replicate something like that, believe, and that
it's existed for as long as it's existed and not
been lost, yeah, you know, or spilled on or anything
(21:46):
like that. It's still looks like a pretty good ball.
That's probably the coolest thing that I've seen, you know,
and it.
Speaker 5 (21:52):
Can help us when we stay right there.
Speaker 4 (21:54):
