Here.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
We're through one hour here on the Gambler and tossing
the sticks.
Speaker 4 (00:25):
Back to Sean Brace. I forgot to move my car.
Speaker 5 (00:27):
I was thinking about that. Is the trunk even closed?
I don't even think the trunk is closed?
Speaker 4 (00:34):
All right, nice work on that one.
Speaker 5 (00:36):
Uh yeah, we're brought as a lot for the Fieldberger
and tap out here getting ready for all things Villanova
and Penn State head coach Mark Ferrante from Villanova football
will be joining us and just a little bit special
guests here in the four o'clock hour, we're talking all
things in fl big question to get the.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
Party started here on this beautiful Friday afternoon.
Speaker 5 (00:54):
The Green Bay Packers have slid in front of the
Philadelphia Eagles as odds on favorite to win. Then it's
weak two. Not trying to go too crazy here, But
we need something.
Speaker 4 (01:03):
To talk about, right, I can't. Is it an overreaction?
Speaker 5 (01:06):
Are you if you were an ODS maker, would you
feel that you would pull the trigger on that as well?
Should you make the wager? I highly doubt that we
would say yes to that with all the football to
be played, But stranger things have happened when it comes
to making a wager at this point in the time
of the season.
Speaker 6 (01:19):
This is gonna be an awesome robbery for years to come.
Packers and Birds. When you look at that playoff game
last year, these are two of the better front offices
in the league and parsons teams in the league. Mike
Parson Eagles fan, by the way, but these are two
of the better teams in the league that are set
up for years to come with young quarterbacks, got young receivers,
all of it.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
They're going to be great.
Speaker 6 (01:40):
And let's not forget who led the charge to ban
the tush push this offseason.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
Who was the Green Bay Packers. That is going to
be a huge talking.
Speaker 6 (01:47):
Point, huge story when these two teams play each other
eventually in the postseason. So I mean, when everyone's looking
at the Packers, are they physically tough enough to beat
the Eagles.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
They were trying to ban the push TOUSHBO more than
any other team. They led the charts.
Speaker 5 (02:02):
They hate us because they ate us, and the Bills
also voted against it. Yeah, they're running it. It's so
weird that how that's shaking out. Hopefully that will go away,
but I don't think it will. I think it's going
to be back in the offseason and probably will have
enough enough to make it, you know, legal play, but
(02:22):
there will be some slight changes. You're still gonna be
able to run a QB sneak, right.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
I actually only think it'll be banned if the Eagles
win again.
Speaker 6 (02:29):
When if the Eagles don't win the Super Bowl again
and they're stopped, I don't think enough teams will care
interesting to actually put the motion in front.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
Of the league to try to ban it. If the
Eagles keep winning, and then they're going to try to
ban it real quick on this one.
Speaker 5 (02:42):
Shifting gears Phillies and they not sweeping the Mets yesterday,
that's great. I found I finally got something right when
I said that the Phillies would sweep somebody. It went
the other way last time I said it. I felt
like the Phillies would be the better team. I thought
they would take three out of four, but I said
I would not be surprised if they do take.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
All four games against the New York Mets, and with that.
Speaker 5 (03:03):
The wild card of course, and the division right there
for the take and division is no longer even up
for debate.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
It hasn't been for the last week.
Speaker 5 (03:11):
But a great, great home stand to get it started
for the Phillies. Now they welcome the Royals to town
and interesting spot here for mister Walker Buehler. The expectations
are very, very low, but Walker Buehler will be getting
to start taking on the Kansas City Royals. DraftKings showing
the Phillies at minus one thirty five favorites here quickly
(03:35):
on this one. Anything to add from the Phillies perspective
against the Royals here, Sean Benard.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah, I mean, I think they're riding high right now
that I think last night, specifically that comeback victory after
Lozardo gave up four in the first inning to absolutely
lock down. And by the way, Lozardo has climbed fifth
in the entire MLB and strikeouts this year, which is something.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
That I wasn't even aware that he was that high.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
But he's over two hundred on the season here, and
I think the whole team picked it up. Harrison Bader,
how can we not talk about what that addition has met.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
He's unbelievable and the Mets kill I'm a Bat guy.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yeah, and the Mets killer that I think this Phillies
team was missing.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
So I think the vibes are high. I think this
team's locked in.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
With all that said, I don't have the highest level
of optimism for Walker Bueller, but I do think specifically, yeah,
that this is probably a guy.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
That is pretty cooked from a pitching perspective.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
He did not look particularly persuasive in his minor league
presence there. But I want to stay open minded and
I think the Bats could pick him up.
Speaker 5 (04:25):
Look, I think everybody has the open mind vibe right now.
When you look at years past, it felt a little
bit more negative from Phillies fans and this team. Whether
it has a lot to do with the league itself
being up for grabs, but this team is top five
in a lot of the major categories. You know that
they can hit the long ball, you know you can
(04:45):
get some great starting pitching and of course with Duran
being added to the equation, it changes everything. I feel
like everybody should have the expectation that this team could
very well be playing deep come October and getting back
to another World Series.
Speaker 7 (05:00):
World Series favorites right now off Drafting Sportsbook plus four
seventy five.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
I think of this. You know, they were great last year.
Speaker 5 (05:05):
There was a good point in the season where they
were a good chunk of the season where they were
the best team in baseball, but yet it felt like
the fan base was just not buying in this time around.
Is it something as simple as the addition of the
closer and that's it?
Speaker 3 (05:19):
I think Beata's a big deal, Like I really really
having an everyday center field or the way to tell
me that Harrison batter has seeped into the fans the
negative nancies that they normally are, and now they're starting
to believe in this team to do something big this
year because of Harrison Bader. I think once sometimes when
you bring in an impact player like it changes the
(05:40):
expectations for all the players around him. Will we see
that with Dron with him being the clear ninth inning
guy that all of a sudden, Kirk Kuran can be
in the eighth inning, Strom can be in the seventh
inning where you're not dependent on those guys in the
same way with this Phillies outfield that it is no
longer Kenyohn Rojas be here for defense this day. Is
this a Brandon marsh day who can't really hit left
handers there like instead of kind of filling up the
gaps your everyday centerfielder, and then you have the optionality
(06:02):
at right and left field.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Kepler has stepped up.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Nick Castiano's crazy to think he's the guy out of
the mix when he's been like the only consistent outfield
production for quite a bit of time. But I think
him settling everyone else sort of into their place has
benefited everyone.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
The optimism comes from two places.
Speaker 6 (06:17):
Number One, they had a great trade deadline, which they
haven't had in a long term. They hadn't had a
go all in win now trade deadline, yeah, in the
last few years, and fans are really disappointed with that.
You get Duran a closer lake Sean was just talking
about a legitimate ninth in a closer, one of the
best closers in baseball the way he's playing right now.
And then you get another batan Bader, and now you
have the platoon in the outfield and you pick Robertson
(06:37):
off the street exactly, so you had a great it's
a big gap, you had a great deadline. The second
thing is compared to last year after the All Star break,
they were playing bad baseball. I mean they were around
five hundred the last few months of the season left
last year. They're playing awesome baseball right now and heading
into the playoffs in this final stretch of the season,
sixteen games left in the regular season. They're playing great baseball,
(06:59):
which is a complete from what they were doing last year.
Speaker 7 (07:01):
And Knowla just had arguably his best start of the season.
Definitely more of that to come. Very interested to see though,
once they get to October, how much, if at all,
do they miss Zack Wheeler, Because I feel like since
he's gone out, and since he's been out and hopefully
all is well with him he's able to return playing
baseball one day. But since he's been out, like I
really don't think we've missed him that much. Everyone's kind
(07:22):
of stepped up around him. I think the bats have
really performed since he stepped out. I don't know if
that's kind of something in the locker room where there
it's like a rallying cry for them in this moment.
But if you get Christopher Sanchez the ball and like
a Game seven in the World Series, I'm as confident
in him as I probably would have been in Zach Wheeler,
because that dude.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
Is ice cold on the mound.
Speaker 5 (07:41):
Well, it's going to be fun over these next few weeks,
and that's gonna happen real fast. Of course, what is
the magic number five? I want to say, Maagice numbers five.
I don't think they'll be popping champagne. I think they
will sip a little bit, a little toast.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
It didn't last year, right when they just clinched Clynch,
I don't think. I don't think they That's the way
it should be.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
Ye, sip a little champagne, raise the glass up a
little bit, and then when you win the division, you
pop them bottles.
Speaker 7 (08:06):
I saw that the Phillies can actually clinch before the
Eagles kick off on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (08:10):
If everything amazing, that would be absolutely amazing.
Speaker 6 (08:14):
It does speak to the rest of baseball and how
poor the kind of the rest of the teams are.
That the Phillies are World Series favorite after their starting
pitcher and number one guy gets hurt.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
And by the way, Christopher Sanchez, like that should be
this tea should win sy Young this year? He straight
up should. It's him and Paul Skeins. He's second in odds.
They've had very similar years statistically, and the Pirates are
a garbage franchise and the Phillies are World Series favorites.
Like Sanchez, the win loss record is night and day different.
I don't understand why there's not more of a push
for this guy nationally. For he's just straight up one
(08:45):
of the best pitchers in baseball and he does not
get talked about in that same light.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
Well, it doesn't date Livy Dune.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Sure that is an aspect.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
That will help.
Speaker 5 (08:53):
That will definitely help as far as you know, the attention,
that's for sure.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
She is all over the place.
Speaker 5 (08:59):
Now, yeah, I'm still not gonna use that sports book
just because of Livy just him. Not Now you can
continue to throw some you know, swag at me.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
Like you know, like they're doing. I think that that's
a good Acdill Madison beer. Justin Herbert's starts could very
well be the case. Wasn't familiar with her game. No,
I was not surprising. I'm learning. Who's the other one
you brought up to.
Speaker 5 (09:20):
I don't know, Lord knows. There's a lot of options.
The girl with the two guys they're playing tennis.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
I don't know. That was a wild report out there.
Speaker 6 (09:29):
Apparently she was dating both Carss Alcaraz and Jick Center.
Alcaraz is a stud. He is an absolute stud. All right,
we're gonna take a quick time out. Head coach Mark
Farranti is gonna join us on the other side, Live
from the Fieldberger and Tap in Happy Valley.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
A beautiful day. You know tomorrow we're suiting up the
boys of Fall are back. Don't go anywhere more. Daily
Ticket after.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
This Live from the Field Burger and Tap and Happy Valley.
This is the Daily Ticket with se once.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
Again getting you ready for all things Villanova and Penn State.
Let's go live from the Fieldberger and Tap. Sham Brace,
Ryan Beefcoyle and Sean Bernard. Ladies and gentlemen joining us
a special guest given a few minutes of his time.
Extremely busy weekend for this man. Head coach of Building
UPAH Football, Mark Ferrante joining us.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
Coach. Great to have you hoi you ben, I'm doing well.
Speaker 8 (10:27):
I appreciate you having me on. When you go to
the opposing teams venue, they don't usually want.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
To talk to me that much.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
What a day, of course, you know, with our partners
here at Playfly and teaming up with the great folks
over here, just rolling out the red carpet for us
here at the Fieldberger and Tap, and they host a
few coaches shows throughout the course of the year, so
they said, please, we'd love to have you. Can't thank
him enough, and of course the Lord above forgiving us
today we're having here today.
Speaker 8 (10:54):
Unbelievable. There's beautiful out here. We just finished our walkthrough.
We actually did it at State College High School. Actually
I have a freshman on our team from there, Mike
gall And then we did go by the stadium, you know,
kind of getting.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
Us and os out of the way.
Speaker 8 (11:07):
We don't play in venues that look anything like this one,
so just had an opportunity to walk the guys through
there and then done our walk through, get the bus
trip out of their legs a little bit. But this
is beautiful over here. And my neighbor has a son
who's a junior up here. Doug Tyrell and his son
Cole is up here and they were talking at this
place here, this field Gerglan Tap place is pretty awesome.
Speaker 4 (11:28):
They say they really like the burgers here.
Speaker 5 (11:30):
We need Yeah, the burger is number one apparently, and
I want to see the course. So we need to
set up a time to come back up here in
the offseason. Coach, get up here.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
And play eighteen. Sounds good to me. We got a
lot to talk to you about.
Speaker 5 (11:40):
Of course, a big game coming up tomorrow, but I
do want to hit the rewind button about Saturday. Open
up the season with a victory at home Colegate seven
point win. It's week one, though, I'm interested from a
coach's perspective, and you know, look, we I know it's
apples and oranges, but you look at what the Eagles
do and the NFL side of things, and we can
look at some other programs at the college level.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
Just week one. It's so tough. You guys don't scrimmage.
Speaker 5 (12:03):
All offseasons, so your thoughts into performance. Although you got
the victory right right, We don't have preseason games. We
don't have a large roster, so we don't do a
lot of eleven on eleven live during preseason. We don't
even do a ton of eleven out eleven live in
the spring, you know, because we're always fear of injury.
We need our guys in the fall, sure, so we
try to you know, get as much live work as
we can, in more you know, conditioned drill type work
(12:26):
and those type of things.
Speaker 8 (12:27):
But the first game was pretty clean game. I really
liked the team's effort. I like the way they hustle
to the ball. There was a lot of crisp hitting
out there on both sides. Actually, Colgate did have a
game under their belt, which helped us because they had
a new staff. They have a new head coach, a
new defensive coordinator, a new offensive coordinator, so it gave
us an opportunity to see them in week one and
we didn't open up till week two. So but as
(12:48):
far as the first game is concerned, like you said,
you never know what you're going to get when you
don't have preseason games or you know, a lot of
a lot of live work.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
So pretty clean game.
Speaker 8 (12:56):
We only had three penalties total, we didn't have any turnovers,
so we're pretty pleased with that. We can work, you
know with those positives, some things to clean up though,
some correctables, Shure's some blocks missed, some tackles, took some
bad angles at times, so you know, need to play
out the ball in the air a little better on defense,
but we did well. They did a good job stopping
our run. You know, we have a pretty good running
(13:17):
back room right now. All the guys that we had
last year are back, and all five offensive linemens started
last year back, So they were probably concerned about our
run because they played us a little differently than they
played MoMath Mama's going to throw the ball forty times
a game.
Speaker 4 (13:31):
We're going to be a little more balanced than that.
Speaker 8 (13:33):
So their safeties were close in the line of scrimmage
and we're able to get some big plays over the top.
So but as far as the first game, whenever you
get the win, that's a big thing, that's the most
important thing. But there's some things. Hopefully we'll have that
improvement that people talk about from week one to week two.
Speaker 5 (13:47):
Yeah, I think Ryan was talking about Matt sees or
fantastic to have Matt in the booth for game one.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
Unbelievable insight.
Speaker 5 (13:52):
But it was interesting to hear him say, look, when
it comes to November, you're not going to look at
that scoreboard. It goes in as a victory and that's it.
So one in the win and call him when you
talk about how they were playing you. As far as defensively,
McQuaid quarterback Southpa out there slaying it.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
I want to say, two.
Speaker 8 (14:10):
Ninety nine is what he had, which breaks the record
for most yardage passing in a debut game for a quarterback.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
Do you give game balls? We do not. We do not.
Speaker 8 (14:19):
We give gay We we have players of the game
and those types of things that we announced in our
Sunday meeting, but we don't really give out game balls.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
I want to be in a speech for raw coach,
I do. I want to be in that locker up
for that.
Speaker 8 (14:31):
But Pat broke Connor Watkins record by one yard. Connor
debut was to ninety eight and Pat went for ninety nine.
So and he had his career high run. His career
longest run was that twenty eight yard er he had
for a touchdown.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
So trickery, yeah for everybody.
Speaker 8 (14:48):
Really just his own read. It really wasn't a trick play,
but they obviously were. It was a short yard of situation.
They were gearing to stop our running back David Abbott
and uh end collapsed, linebacker overlapped. Everyone was going to
the David Abbott handoff and Pat came around the end
and there he went in untouched from twenty eight yards.
Speaker 4 (15:06):
So we want to know on the season.
Speaker 5 (15:08):
And now we get into this weekend here which you
and I were talking at Ocean City, New Jersey, another
great event that you guys had for Villain of the
Football getting ready for the season, and he said, this
is a game that everybody wants to talk about. I
don't know why. Just the discussion with your team leading
into this game, and I know, look, you're gonna be
(15:29):
honest with us, and it might be coach peak, but
you have to make this just another game, but it
really isn't though.
Speaker 4 (15:36):
Correct, Yeah, correct?
Speaker 8 (15:37):
I mean when you walk in there, and like I
said earlier, you see the size of the stadium, second
largest stadium in the country behind Michigan. Wow, we just
don't play in these type of venues. And you know
they have one hundred and twenty seven man roster to
our ninety three man roster, so that's a big difference.
Speaker 4 (15:53):
And you know, our guys would love for.
Speaker 8 (15:56):
Penn State and Notre Dame and those type of schools
to have recruited that, and maybe we have some guys
that could play at this level, whether they could do
it now after development, or maybe they could have come
out of high school if they got here and developed
over time. But they have a lot more of those guys.
They have a lot more of those guys, and they're
going to rotate a lot of those guys. But this
is a great opportunity for our guys because guys that
(16:17):
we have guys that want to play beyond college.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
We have guys that want to play in the NFL.
Speaker 8 (16:21):
So this gives them opportunity to play against some guys
that I know there's some guys on the other team's
roster that we're playing tomorrow that will be playing on Sunday,
So she gives them an opportunity to showcase their abilities
against really top level competition. This game here was scheduled
way back when, you know, so when we played them
in twenty twenty one, this game was part of that agreement,
(16:44):
so we knew they were going to be on the
schedule in twenty to twenty five. All the way back
when that game was scheduled, so we didn't know we
were playing number two in the country at the time.
You know, had we known that and they said, would
you like to sign a contract for.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
Two games, I might have said no. But it is
what it is, and we're here and everyone's excited about it,
nationally televised game FS one.
Speaker 5 (17:06):
You know, we we were joking on the way up
and we're not looking for any bulletin board material and
I don't think you know that anybody needs that. We
understand what the expectations for Penn State, but coach, just
knowing what of course these odds makers are saying all that,
and the expectation for Penn State coming into the season
where we're at right now, just you know, comparing it
to some of the upsets we've seen, like you're in
(17:27):
a position to make history. Is that something that even
enters your mind? Just as a fan perspective, you love
the game, You eat, sleep, and drink the game of football.
Speaker 4 (17:35):
Do you even like allow that to seep in the
back of your mind?
Speaker 8 (17:38):
Not really, not really. I don't know what point spreads are.
I don't look at that stuff. You know, I'm not
saying my neighbor, who I mentioned earlier. Doesn't talk about it,
but you know, and I don't look at predictions by
whomever's making those predictions, you know, whatever newspaper writer or
whoever you know, announcers or anything like that.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
We we say the same thing.
Speaker 8 (18:01):
I pretty much go into every week the same way
I go into every week, the same way James does. Really,
we're trying to go one and oh this week, regardless
of we're playing Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday practice. Yes, we are
preparing for what we're going to see schematically against the opposition,
but we're more concerned with what we're doing, how we're doing,
what we're trying to do, you know, our execution, on
(18:22):
our fundamentals and our plan, you know, and then when
we get in there, there's always going to be game
day adjustments. So we try to go one and oh.
Every week. We talk about nameless, faceless opponent, and you know,
we're just coming up here and gonna give it our
best shot.
Speaker 5 (18:35):
And that's a message that was carrying through the coach
A Show on Tuesday. Yeah, and don't allow me to
hog the microphone. You guys got a question for head
coach Mark Faranti joining us, but just again leading into
this game and what Penn State brings to the table
on the offensive side, What is something that you are
looking at right now when it comes to game planning
for Penn State?
Speaker 8 (18:53):
On Off said, we have five linemen coming back. They
have pretty much the nucleus of their alignment, all coming
back from a year ago.
Speaker 4 (19:01):
The running backs pretty well, we I don't know what
you want me to say about their running backs, you
know what I mean. You know they're there.
Speaker 8 (19:10):
We have good running backs, but we don't have all
guys that are that size. You know, David Abbatts our
biggest guy, and he's about six foot and he's two
twenty four.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
All their guys are all of that big boys, you
know what I mean. I remember Singleton when he was
at Governor Mifflin in tenth grade. You know, I saw
his film in tenth grade.
Speaker 8 (19:26):
I'm like, okay, well we got to go recruit somewhere
else because we'll have now. When you looked at him,
you knew he was going yeah, yeah. I saw sa
Quan in tenth grade at Whitehall High School. I saw,
you know, Singleton over here Governor Mifflin in tenth grade,
and it's like, okay, they're going elsewhere, and we'll try
to go find it running back somewhere else. And fortunately
we're able to find some good running backs. Oh yeah,
you know, I know, there got some new white outs,
(19:48):
you know. And then it all starts with the quarterback,
no matter who you're playing, and no matter you know
who we're playing at that position, that's where it all starts.
Speaker 4 (19:55):
You know.
Speaker 8 (19:56):
They got to be able to manage the game and
you know, make good decisions with the ball and you know,
keep things going in a timely fashion. You know, make
sure the tempos what the coaches want and all that.
So and Drew's been around a long time, so you know,
and he's a big guy that can sit in the
pocket and get the ball downfield and he gets it
out quick at times. And you know, then we got
to tackle those guys in space when he hits the
backs out of the backfield and all that stuff. So
(20:17):
there's a lot to prepare for, and you know, the
offensive coordinator coach does a great job. I mean, there's
a lot of moving parts. There's a lot of shifts
in motions. There's three tight end sets, there's no tight
end sets, and everything in between.
Speaker 4 (20:29):
And you know, and he moves them. He moves them
around a lot, So we got to work it out
for us.
Speaker 8 (20:35):
You know, we just got to have good eye discipline
is what we talk to our guys about, especially our
linebackers and our secondary.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
You know, we got to be gap sound and we
got to tackle well and.
Speaker 8 (20:43):
Hopefully if we can create a few turnovers and you know,
steal a couple of possessions, that would help as well.
Speaker 7 (20:48):
I'd like to chime in on kind of the offensive
line part that you were talking about. With five guys returning,
when you're going up against a front seven that's littered
with potential NFL prospects with Penn State, how much COP
fans would that give you if you know, you guys
are able to actually go out there kind of hold
their own execute for for going forward and cia play
when you're kind of going up against defense like Penn State.
Speaker 4 (21:08):
Yeah, no, it'd be great.
Speaker 8 (21:09):
I mean if our guys could could move the ball
and get the ball in the end zone a little
bit on offense, and we can, you know, like I said,
play our gaps and you know, get them off schedule
when we're on defense and they're on offense. That gives
us great confidence. I think twenty twenty one we ended
up being CAA champs. We ended up going to the playoffs,
and that game really helped us because our defense really
did a good job stopping the run that day.
Speaker 4 (21:30):
I know they're a different team.
Speaker 8 (21:32):
Now, and I know, you know, twenty one and twenty five,
you really can't compare it because there's so many different
people on the roster.
Speaker 4 (21:37):
We only have a couple guys that were here before.
Speaker 8 (21:40):
In twenty one our linebacker coach now, Forrest Ryan was
our All American linebacker who played in that.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
Game, and he had a great game.
Speaker 8 (21:47):
But it gives you confidence if you can hang in
there and you know, make some good plays, and you know,
it gives the guys confidence for when they do get
to that next in league opponent or you know, another
FCS opponent, And it helped us that year. The key
is for us to come in here, play well, perform well,
and stay healthy.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
And to your point about it starting at the quarterback
to bring it back right to the Villanova circles. I
thought that was an incredibly impressive start by Pat mcquad there.
And this is a guy with experience, the Nickel State transfer.
What is it about him that he brings to the
offenser that people have not quite seen that he will
still bring to the table this season.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
That makes an impact.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
Yeah, he's a coach's kid, you know what I mean.
Speaker 8 (22:22):
His dad coached high school football in Ohio for three
different schools. I believe obviously coached him at Solon High
School when he was there. His dad's in the Ohio
Hall of Fame for high School Coaches and you know,
so he's been around it his whole life. So we're
really impressed. He was a midyear guy. We only brought
in one midyear guy. We only lost one midyear guy,
so we only had room to bring in one guy.
(22:44):
So we brought in Pat and we were really impressed
with how in three months he was able to pick
up just from the fifteen spring practices. And then obviously
we carried the competition in to the summer and into
preseason with him in Tanner Maddox because Tanner has been
Connor's back up for three years. Tanner's a senior but
a red team and he does punt returns and all
(23:04):
that stuff. So we went head to head with those
guys for as long as we felt we had to
look at it and then Pat came out on top.
So that's pretty impressive for a guy to be with us,
you know, basically seven months and they're in a starting spot.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
But he's been around his whole life. Like I said,
he's a coach's kid. You know.
Speaker 8 (23:21):
He makes good decisions, he gets the ball out quick,
he protects the ball, and he does have more game
experience under his belt than Tanner because as you mentioned,
he not only started two years at nicol stap but
he also started at junior college.
Speaker 5 (23:34):
He brought up sham Bandard brought up special teams, and
I apologize, I had to think of Luke Larson, and
I'm saying coach, first of all, what an impact he
had in Game one.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
Oh, no doubt, he's the real No doubt. He can
do a lot of good things.
Speaker 5 (23:45):
Yes, And I think, you know, if we want to
get attendance up just a little bit, I believe if
you put him out there on billboards, I have honestly
believe that might have a big impact. And especially if
we can hear his voice some way somehow. He is
the real deal. He brings it. But yeah, we heard
his name on the broadcast Ton and he was penning
them deep. He's a weapon for you guys.
Speaker 8 (24:03):
Yes, I'd like to have you hear his name less
mean punting less. Yeah, he is going to be our holder.
He is going to be our holder. But he's really accurate.
He can kick it a lot of different ways. He
played Australian rules football when he was in Australia before
he came over to East Carolina on scholarship as a punter.
And he's East Carolina's second leading punter in net yardage.
(24:26):
So he doesn't have the leg that's going to go
forty seven on average.
Speaker 4 (24:31):
He'll go you know, forty one, forty two on average.
Speaker 8 (24:34):
But the way he kicks the ball, there's not a
lot of return yards because he can aim it. In
the one hundred and seventy five kicks punts he had
at East Carolina, he only had seven touchbacks, so he
does not you know, he puts the ball in play
or can angle it out of bounds.
Speaker 4 (24:50):
Where you wanted to go.
Speaker 8 (24:51):
So if you say, hey, put it at the five
yard line out of bounds so there is no return.
He can do those types of lass and he can
you know, he can do the the rugby style, the
roll out right, would still kick it to the left,
which is not easy to do, just because he's used to,
you know, running and kicking the ball. He calls it
from growing up in Australia. He doesn't call it punting.
He calls it passing. He says, that's how they passed
(25:12):
the ball in Australian rules football. Yeah that makes sense, Yeah,
that makes sense. He's a very special player, very unique
in that sense. Is he the more unique punter that
you've had when you can, like a serious question, because
I've seen coaches say, hey, it.
Speaker 4 (25:26):
Just happened the other night. What was the game? It
was like kicking out of bounds and the guy didn't
have the leg with the bears. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (25:31):
So if you have a punter like this and you're saying, hey,
pin them on this side, we want you to kick
it to the left sideline and do it, I imagine
that's pretty easy for most punters.
Speaker 4 (25:39):
But he's unique in that sense.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (25:41):
No, he kicks it. Like I said, he holds it
differently some of them. You know, he can do the
traditional punch, sure, you know. So it's got the spiral
and hopefully it turns over so it goes a little
further and then he can do the one that has
more of the kickoff look to it, the backspin, so
you know, like the sky punt, you try to get
inside the ten yard line and have it, you know,
more of a dead drop than he can lie drive
of it to get the role if you want the role.
(26:02):
And then he kicks one that kind of where the
ball spins sideways and it just boomerangs out of bounds,
you know what I mean, And he goes, I've only
done that maybe three or four times in a game.
Speaker 4 (26:11):
But they can't field that one. They can't field that one.
And he's a good athlete.
Speaker 8 (26:14):
He's actually our holder on field goals and extra points
now as well. He's done one hundred and fifty three
of those snaps when he was in These Carolina. So
he's got good hands and he can throw it and
he can catch it. And he ran a few fakes
so he now he ran a few fakes in his
career ed East Carolina, so he can can run a
little bit too at thirty three years old.
Speaker 5 (26:33):
Yeah, any three, you gotta love it, head coach going
over a football mar front. They joined us here live
from the Fieldburger and Tap can't thank you enough, coach
for stopping by a busy, busy weekend for you.
Speaker 4 (26:43):
Obviously, just a quick one on the way out.
Speaker 5 (26:46):
You brought you piqued my interest when we were talking
about scouting players over the years, and you've been in
this game for a long time. Who's the one guy
that you that you knock you out at the ballpark?
He went saw the tape, maybe caught him live. Is
there one that jumps.
Speaker 4 (26:58):
To you right off? Jump in your mind? Yeah, you
know what, here's what I'm gonna say about that.
Speaker 8 (27:04):
The ones that jump off the film, we can't get.
Like I said, Like I said, those guys in tenth grade,
the names I mentioned, they're gonna go to the the
ones that we look at and see potential. We've had
guys that have been drafted in the second round, and
obviously we got Christian Benford up there with the Bills
right now, who has been a four year starter for them.
(27:28):
Some of those guys. Tono Passo is still with the Bears.
That ninth year he got a stacked. The other night
he was a second rounder with the Chiefs. They had
no other offers. So it's those guys, those diamonds and
the rough that you know, we are able to work
them out live. When Tono came to our camp in
the summer, he measured just under six seven, he was
(27:49):
just under two hundred and forty pounds and ran a
four seven four forty. So we took a shot at him,
and sure enough he developed into a really good football player.
So it's more of those guys that we try to
find in the in the recruiting cycle than the ones
that jump off film, because the ones that jump off film,
you know they're usually gonna go on to the to.
Speaker 4 (28:09):
The higher level for sure.
Speaker 5 (28:10):
Back of a program you have built over the year's
coach double digit victories and a lot of these years
playoff appearances. Of course you got the championship and uh
continued success this season. Another game here coming up tomorrow.
Wish you nothing but the best, but thank you for
stopping by, of course, live here on the Gambler the
Daily Ticket, head coach Villanova Football, Mark Ferrante, Do not
(28:31):
go anywhere.
Speaker 4 (28:32):
We're hanging out here. A beautiful day and happy valley.
Speaker 5 (28:34):
More Daily Ticket as we're getting ready for Penn's date
and Villanova back after this.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
Number one on your car radio preset hand the new
and improved Diehard Radio, Wayes and WD two seven three
D Philadelphia is Fox Sports Radio The Gambler.
Speaker 5 (28:57):
Coming to you live once again, the Fielberger and Tam
You're at Happy Valley getting you ready for all things.
Speaker 4 (29:03):
Villanova and Penn State. A great weekend.
Speaker 5 (29:06):
We have a lot of fun of course tomorrow live
from the Lots and really looking forward to it with
an extended pregame show right here on The Gambler of course,
college football, Rundown Beef Embrace, Sam Austry and Shan Binard
tomorrow from the Lots that will be at twelve thirty.
(29:27):
Nick McClay back at the studio. You good, you know,
you hit the buttons. You're out, you know for music.
We're great back here, all right, you're the man.
Speaker 4 (29:34):
You're the man. All right. I'm just checking in. I
didn't want to make sure you didn't faint on me.
It's all good.
Speaker 5 (29:38):
Great, Nick McClay, filling in here on a Friday, back
at the studio. We're live from Happy Valley. It was
great to catch up with coach Mark Ferrante. And it's
it's funny, boys, because, like you know, interviewing coaches, you
what a tiptoe around those sort of things with expectations.
Speaker 4 (29:53):
A B you know, big time underdog. But I love
his answer.
Speaker 5 (29:57):
Yeah, my neighbor might have brought it up to me.
But here's the deal. You know, it's just another game,
and it's funny. It's also funny because you know you're
going to get the coach peak, but you have to
approach it as like from that perspective as a coach,
you can't make this game bigger than what it is.
And I would imagine they're they're all smart enough to
know that we're walking into the Beaver Stadium and how
(30:17):
big of a game it is. And I'm sure that
they do some see some things on the timeline from
a player's perspective, But the.
Speaker 3 (30:23):
Coaching state team talked about like a legitimate national title contender.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
This is not like, you know, run of the mill.
This is a good Penn State team.
Speaker 5 (30:30):
I also want to say that this could very well
be the biggest upset in college football history if it
does happen.
Speaker 4 (30:37):
I think it would it would be.
Speaker 5 (30:39):
It would be because at the top the top dog
is Michigan and app State back in seven.
Speaker 7 (30:45):
I want to say it was, but we were talking
was forty seven and a half points. Yeah, an app
State was what number one.
Speaker 4 (30:49):
In the whould you have? Where were you give you?
Speaker 2 (30:51):
Seven?
Speaker 4 (30:52):
Six years old?
Speaker 5 (30:53):
I was gambling, yeah, And look I remember watching that game.
Speaker 4 (30:59):
It was a noon kick, I want to say.
Speaker 5 (31:00):
And oh, by the way, you know, I would imagine
app State got paid to go there and beat them too,
which is always fun when you throw that into the equation.
Speaker 4 (31:09):
But look, it's gonna be a lot of fun.
Speaker 5 (31:11):
It's a huge spot for Villanova and it's a lot
of fun to be at their home games. Let me
tell you that right now. They do a great job
and they're even raising their game up across the board
this year. So if you're looking to catch some college football,
not down at Lincoln Financial Field, come on out to
a game up at on the main Line, I have
Villanova Stadium. I promise you it's a tremendous time and
(31:34):
a great spot to catch some football action.
Speaker 6 (31:36):
I thought it was interesting too when he was saying
the last time they played came to Penn State was
in twenty twenty one, and they won the league that
year and made the playoffs. Yea, And he was talking
about how much that game prepared them for the rest
of the CIA play Like, hopefully this is a Villanova
team that has a lot of expectations in the CAA,
could be is one of the best teams. Hopefully this
game prepares them in the similar manner when they go
on a big run after this one.
Speaker 4 (31:58):
Final season two would be nice to who get the
job done? And but again, final season. What he's retired
after this? No, Patriot Patrick?
Speaker 5 (32:06):
Yeah, yeah, no, no, no, no, I don't think he's
going anywhere.
Speaker 4 (32:11):
And he's yeah, he's a legend man.
Speaker 5 (32:14):
He's been with them forever, forever, thirty eight thirty eight, thirty.
Speaker 4 (32:18):
Eight years, thirty eight years.
Speaker 7 (32:20):
I think the big thing, though, is if you're able to,
like he goes in the locker room at halftime, talks
to his staffer, and it's like, you know, we're holding
our own on the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
We're holding our own with our corners feet up front.
Speaker 7 (32:31):
Yeah, if you're able to walk out of this game
with like one or two things like if we can
hold our own against them in this regard, like we
can hold our own against anyone.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
To relate back.
Speaker 7 (32:39):
To some basketball talk, I played at D three school
miser Accordia we played Seaton Hall in like a preseason.
I played Seaton Hall when they were number twelve in
the country. Yeah, and it was like the first like
media was, yeah it was it was the Miles pal
team and it was I think we wound up losing
like one oh two to thirty seven.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
But I'll tell you what.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
There's first, like eight minutes we were running.
Speaker 7 (32:59):
Our coaches were like, you know, we can run our players,
we can get open against the number twelve team in
the country. We should be able to fare pretty well
at D three. So if they're at Penn State, you know,
if Bill nov was able to hold their own in
just some regards, I think that's a big confidence boost,
not just for the players, but for the coaching staff
and potentially, you know, some foreshadowing down the line.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
That's game two.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
It's a long, long, grinding year. Get out healthy two.
Yeah that too, right, Yeah, that's definitely got to be
in the back.
Speaker 3 (33:25):
And by the way, Penn State a little banged up too.
Four on the defensive line are set to miss this game.
We got a couple of injuries a wide receivers, so
this isn't a fully healthy Penn State squad either.
Speaker 5 (33:32):
All right, you know what, Let's stay with the big underdog, right,
David and Goliath. Let's talk about Temple and Oklahoma for
a second here, if you would not mind. And this
number has been dancing, this number got us. I think
last week as high as twenty eight and a half,
down to twenty twenty.
Speaker 4 (33:48):
Two two days ago, back to twenty.
Speaker 5 (33:51):
Is anybody at this table giving Temple a chance to
pull off the upset at home against so clob outright
when you're giving them a chance against Oklahoma.
Speaker 3 (34:02):
I think they hang in there. I think they cover.
I don't think they're gonna end up ok in the game.
I do love the first half.
Speaker 5 (34:07):
Yeah, the point spreads. I'm on the point spread at
twenty two and a half. I got twenty two and
a half. I'll take it all day. Look, it's an
offensive's buzzing right now. I know Howard is not Oklahoma,
but I also want to put into the equation that
this is a this is a letdown spot for a
team like Oklahoma just playing.
Speaker 7 (34:24):
Michigan and look ahead next week. They got Auburn on
the schedule as well.
Speaker 3 (34:27):
By the way, I don't think Michigan might be that great,
like I think that might have been a little more
of a Bryce Underwoad can't throw.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
The football yet.
Speaker 4 (34:33):
Oklahoma is good.
Speaker 3 (34:34):
Sure, John Mattier looks unbelievable, the Heisman favorite, right, Yeah,
Like you gotta give them their credit, There's no doubt
about it. But I do think this Temple team has
some momentum, more so than I felt in years the
Mett Rule days with Casey Kailer, and they're taking the
reins and like, I think the program's got a buzz
I like that Casey Keayler was strategic in bringing up
the hot mic thing that he's openly talking about, like
the disrespect of receiving. So there's Bolton board information all
(34:57):
over the place.
Speaker 4 (34:57):
They're playing good football. I think they hang in there.
Three to seventeen. I think they're outscoring their opponents so far.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
Yeah, yeah, who.
Speaker 4 (35:05):
Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 6 (35:06):
Okay, go ahead, first time since twenty nineteen they started
twoing up. Yeah, so like a Temple program where a
lot is working against them from an administration perspective, athletic
department perspective, but uh it's still somehow they start too
and oh against U Mass and Howard. So good for them,
and this is the best time that they could possibly
playing Oklahoma. Yeah, coming off that Michigan game with a
(35:26):
big game next week, going to the link where look,
I mean the link is as empty as you'll ever see. No, No,
are they playing next year? Is that it being now?
Speaker 4 (35:38):
Is that out there? Okay?
Speaker 2 (35:43):
Two years next year?
Speaker 4 (35:45):
Wow, that's a game, that is a game right there. Yeah,
I'm in. I'm in.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
It's going to see in the RV for that one.
Speaker 5 (35:52):
Yeah, we will get the RVY for that one. We'll
need a driver to a bourbon down there. And again
those two two programs back to season twenty eighteen twenty
seventeen two banger games Villanova won nineteen seventeen sixteen thirteen
the previous season to that Temple over Villanova, So it'd
be cool to see those two teams matching up.
Speaker 4 (36:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (36:11):
Yeah, I was gonna say I thought it was I
was gonna say, like President's cover song, I remember going
but when I was little for Temple Nova at the length.
Speaker 4 (36:16):
Yeah, and it would be cool to see that.
Speaker 8 (36:19):
Hey.
Speaker 5 (36:19):
Look, you know that's one of the things about coach
Ferrante that I really because you know, darn well he's
gotten a phone call before it was a program builder,
and it's just tough. You look at what Temple has
gone through. I'm not trying to say that all the
coaches that they've had have been great, but you know
they if they have success there, they're getting a phone
call and most of the time they're moving on and
rightfully so, so I would imagine this might be another
(36:42):
time we're talking about this coach.
Speaker 7 (36:43):
Monell Casey Keeler has been around the block. I believe
he actually started at Rowan, then he went to Delaware
and then most recently he's been at Sam Houston State.
But he kind of has that like Kirk Signetti vibe
to him where he's like the late bloomer like Signetti
was iup then elon j m U like, So he
might obviously be looking to use Temple as a as
a kind of building block or a jumping stone, whatever
(37:05):
you want to get.
Speaker 4 (37:07):
But yeah, for.
Speaker 2 (37:07):
Sure it's in the locker. He's doing his thing.
Speaker 7 (37:10):
If they're able to keep that game and check tomorrow,
the phone lines might be buzzing for Casey by the
end of the season.
Speaker 5 (37:16):
I just think going to Philadelphia from Oklahoma's perspective, a
noon kickoff, they're.
Speaker 6 (37:23):
Not even bringing their band. Yeah, we were talking about
earlier disrespect for Temple. They're not even bringing their band.
Speaker 7 (37:29):
Wow, Saint Joe's band will be playing for Oklahoma's.
Speaker 4 (37:32):
No, that's not for real. They St Jose? Why St
Jose band playing Bokla some band represented? They getting money?
Speaker 2 (37:40):
They they can turn heel? Could we play? Temple band?
Speaker 7 (37:43):
Probably never got to play. We'll never get to play
a football game. This is their one opportunity.
Speaker 5 (37:47):
Oh but come on, where's the Philadelphia prie?
Speaker 7 (37:50):
And also looking at oklahoma schedule the rest of the way,
every opponent after Temple is ranked. So it's the most
clear obvious look ahead letdown spy in the world.
Speaker 4 (37:59):
What it's the money line? Oh? Stop it all right?
Well I know, I know, I know. Well that's what
I asked. When I asked, he was like, I am
giving him a shot. I do give him a shot. Well, yeah,
with the spread Evan Simon or John Mattier, who are
you taking? You know, is the number one QR in
the entire country? Here we go, Here we go.
Speaker 3 (38:18):
I might have to talking me into it. I think
they do have a chance. I think they're gonna stay
competitive for sure. I do think they have a chance
to win this game.
Speaker 4 (38:26):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (38:27):
Jeometiers, I responsible the kids. He's a bad man. And
Stephen they would say twenty three and a half. Money
line is plus twelve hundred. You want to take Oklahoma
minus twenty four hundred? Anybody here at the table? I
think I asked you yesterday Oklahoma winning the SEC?
Speaker 4 (38:44):
No why I just kind of said a couple of
minutes ago.
Speaker 7 (38:47):
I think every opponent after Temple is ranked on the
rest of their schedule, it's just murderers row. Obviously, some
of those games are gonna have to go on the road.
They go nine to three, though with that schedule they
should be in the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (38:58):
Who has the leg up? As far as schedule? And
again this is kind of like that preseason conversation, but
we're a couple of games in too as well.
Speaker 4 (39:06):
Who has the leg up?
Speaker 5 (39:08):
When we think about the the SEC, we know teams
are going to lose, right And it's gonna sound so obvious,
but it's the reality. You look at the LSU schedule,
you look at the Alabama schedule, and you're like, yeah,
you know, everybody can lose these games, or this team
could win these games.
Speaker 4 (39:21):
Who has the leg up? When it comes to that conversation, if.
Speaker 5 (39:24):
You're gonna say Oklahoma is tough, a tough road ahead,
is there anybody, off the top of your mind from
the SEC perspective that potentially has an easier schedule.
Speaker 7 (39:33):
I think Texas, off the top of my head, was
like one of the easier ones. I believe they have
Georgia down the stretch, and they have Oklahoma, but I
think they avoid Alabama. I think they avoid LSU, so
they're certainly in the conversation. And with the Oklahoma game,
that's always a neutral site game, So coin flip there.
But I think off the top of my head, Texas
probably has the most favorable schedule out of kind of
(39:54):
these SEC big dogs.
Speaker 5 (39:55):
Speaking of the SEC, let's have some fun here, Bama
twenty and a half.
Speaker 4 (39:59):
Again, it's Wisconsin. Take it, Yeah, take it roll damned tad. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (40:05):
Billy Edwards, Wisconsin starring quarterback is injured. Yeah, he's out
for the game. Former turp right, former turput the.
Speaker 5 (40:12):
Big one Tennessee and Georgia. That's at three point thirty tomorrow.
It's a four point spread now on DK Tennessee catching
four at home like Georgia.
Speaker 4 (40:20):
I'm right does McClay on Tennessee. I think he's on
Georgia as well.
Speaker 2 (40:24):
Georgia, we go dogs.
Speaker 5 (40:25):
You guys put in the preview upset. George's on upset,
like you guys are just trying to get clicks.
Speaker 4 (40:30):
We did.
Speaker 7 (40:31):
We literally talked about that yesterday. Literally talked about it yesterday.
I go, did either of us pick Tennessee? And he
was like, no, then who did put who put it together?
I don't know who are you talking about? That tweet
the description Yeah, that wasn't That wasn't us, because I was.
Speaker 6 (40:44):
Like, am I crazy to think Tennessee could win this game?
I don't think it's insane, But my good wide receiver corps.
Speaker 7 (40:52):
My kind of take on that was like Joey Aguilar
has to have his like welcome to the big leagues
type moment, like his Johnny Manziel versus Alabama type moment,
and if he does like Tennessee, I think is the
talk of the town in college football after this week.
Speaker 4 (41:04):
But you just look what Kirby has done the Tennessee.
Speaker 7 (41:06):
I think he's won eight straight matchups against them, Even
a couple of years ago when Hendon Hooker was out there,
they absolutely dismantled them. And this is not your your
daddy's Georgia. This is not the same old Georgia we've
seen over the past few years. But one of the
situations that proved your older brothers.
Speaker 3 (41:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (41:23):
Yeah, you think the Joey Aguilar hype is game out
of the hand, because I think it is.
Speaker 7 (41:26):
I think it's Yeah, this is his first big test,
like Syracuse, Okay, we'll see what they were made of.
Speaker 4 (41:32):
Who was last week? East Texas?
Speaker 6 (41:34):
Yeah, and something like me, people are looking at the
five Tennessee five hundred yard passing yards like, all right,
look at the competition. Syracuse is not going to be
some good program this year. They've just barely beat Yukon.
Speaker 4 (41:48):
I should have I should have a coach that. Yeah,
you ever think about making your team? I feel like
every coach is discussing that all week.
Speaker 7 (41:56):
Last year when Aguilar was at app State, they played Clemson.
Speaker 4 (41:59):
I think it was Week two. It was thirty five
to nothing at the end of the first quarter. So
that will do it.
Speaker 7 (42:03):
That was the first kind of big boy ball that
he played and didn't really live up to the hype.
So he's got some pressure on him tomorrow. But he's
played well so far.
Speaker 5 (42:11):
Yeah, no, yes, that's that's definitely a game has a
lot of attention, no doubt about that. A couple more
here from the SEC that does have a ton of attention.
Speaker 4 (42:17):
Of course.
Speaker 5 (42:17):
I'm gonna go to Notre Dame in Texas A and
M six and a half currently that's a seven thirty
kick in South Ben really interesting spot for Notre Dame.
Get the season going, lose thirteen day layoff back at it,
have to take on a really tough Texas A and
M team, Sam, I look at the Aggies as a
potential dog that could bite in a big way on
(42:40):
the money line.
Speaker 4 (42:40):
I do.
Speaker 5 (42:41):
I think you have a young, inexperienced quarterback who looked good.
Speaker 6 (42:44):
You did look good, but now he's making his first
home start. A and M has some dogs on the
defensive side of the ball. Offensively, we know what they
have at the quarterback position. I think A and M
could very well go in there and come away.
Speaker 4 (42:54):
With the victor. I was impressed from CJ. Carr and
that debut.
Speaker 6 (42:57):
Absolutely, I think he's the better quarterback in this matchup
against Texas.
Speaker 4 (43:01):
A and M.
Speaker 6 (43:02):
And I'm you can make that statement, Yeah, I die
can't because I was that impressed all on the road
in his debut as a true freshman, calling back to
his home debut.
Speaker 4 (43:10):
Now he's making his home debut.
Speaker 6 (43:12):
Miami has some dogs on the D line too. I
think CJ. Carr is gonna ball out. I like No
Dame Alsoeez is a really desperate spot for Notre Dame.
If they lose, this the path to the College Ball
playoffs without playing in a conference, so they don't get
an automatic qualifier opportunity. It's really tough. This is a
must win for Notre Dame. They can't have two losses early.
Do you agree with that beef too?
Speaker 5 (43:30):
I want to get you in on that because that's
something we brought up with Julian Edlow and he pushed
back on it. He said, well, hold up, Notre Dame
two losses, I think they're in the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (43:39):
Let's just have this conversation as if they lose.
Speaker 5 (43:42):
Tomorrow night against Texas A and m run the table,
do you think they're in the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (43:46):
I think they have one ranked opponent left on the schedule,
most likely none o.
Speaker 4 (43:50):
USC righty matchup. I don't see USC being ranked.
Speaker 7 (43:55):
I think if they go ten and two, with the
schedule that they have, I would probably say they're on
the outside looking at maybe like that last team, that
twelve team out.
Speaker 3 (44:02):
Yeah, I think there's a chance in like the context
of the results obviously matter if they started steamrolling teams
and like the Miami I would like to kind of
rephrase the whole like lead up like that was an
encouraging loss to me by Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (44:13):
I thought they fought hard. I thought CJ.
Speaker 3 (44:15):
Car looked great, Like I thought it was like positive
takeaways from a good Miami.
Speaker 4 (44:18):
Team they favored.
Speaker 5 (44:20):
Yeah, Miami was under value to the National Championship game
last year and they have the best defense ever running
games quarterback went.
Speaker 4 (44:30):
To the national team.
Speaker 5 (44:31):
But I'm just saying coming into that and they hate
to cut you off, I'm sorry, but you know that
I had more expectation. They forgot they had Jeremy Love
on their roster, which is ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (44:41):
Yeah, that is crazy.
Speaker 4 (44:42):
You're gonna be the best back in college football.
Speaker 3 (44:43):
Yeah, I guess I'm just I'm still the jury should
still be out on Notre Dame as a whole, Like
if they look phenomenal and pick up a win this
week and can build momentum off that they're right in
that championship contender mix right again. So I think they've
been buried a little bit more than I think it's deserved.
Speaker 5 (44:56):
It's crazy because and this is another obvious statement, Captain
I over here, it's just a win is such a difference, right, Like,
just if they lose, oh the sky is falling, right,
But if they win, they're back into a getting back
to a champion game possibility.
Speaker 4 (45:13):
We'll see what happens.
Speaker 5 (45:14):
Yeah, I think they'll be on the outside looking and
I think we're gonna see a lot of good teams,
good records at the end of the year, and things
will be different.
Speaker 4 (45:21):
At the end of the year.
Speaker 7 (45:22):
From the voting perspective, Vegas has to really like them though,
to make them a two and a half point favorite
at Miami and now a six and a half point
favorite against a tough time. I was surprised at six
and a half. I thought it would be more so
like three, three and a half something like that. But
I would say must win spot. But I definitely like
Texas saying him to cover plus that six and a half.
I think we could get an under game too. I
think like twenty four to twenty somewhere in that regard.
(45:43):
I can get down with that as well.
Speaker 5 (45:44):
All Right, one more from the SEC and uh, let's
go SU and Florida here seven point spread game being
played Death Valley seven thirty kick desperate team in Florida.
Speaker 4 (45:57):
But we've had this conversation before.
Speaker 6 (45:59):
Desperate team, like if ellis ellis he was a really
tough schedule after this game. True, if they lose to
Florida as an over touchdown favorite, the path to the
Collegewable Playoff is looking pretty narrow.
Speaker 4 (46:12):
And if they don't.
Speaker 6 (46:13):
Make the College Wall Playoff this year, I don't understand
how Brian Kelly remains in Death Valley because those that
fan base.
Speaker 4 (46:19):
Is gonna be on his tail. He has to at
least be on the hot seat.
Speaker 6 (46:22):
The expectation is not just national championship, but at the
very least consistent College Wable Playoff appearances. And now Brian
Kelly would be with his best team, top transfer class,
a highsman level quarterback.
Speaker 4 (46:33):
If he can't make the College Wall Playoff with this.
Speaker 6 (46:34):
Team, man, things are gonna get a dark And Allison
is unfair to a point.
Speaker 4 (46:38):
I get it. You're hired to win a championship.
Speaker 6 (46:39):
Not when they expand the playoffs and twelve teams get in,
you gotta get it tickets, not like yea fourt team playoff.
Speaker 5 (46:45):
No, you're right about that. I guess I was thinking
more along the lines of winning at all. Yeah, that's
it's at the minimum. No, you're right, you're right about that.
They're too good. Yeah, they're too.
Speaker 6 (46:55):
Also, yeah, they don't have any run game, so it's
not really a balanced offense. But Alsmeyer is incredible. He's
probably the best quarterback in the country. Who wins the
SEC right now? Who wins who?
Speaker 4 (47:09):
Different? But I'm not completely off Texas. I know everyone is.
I am Georgia.
Speaker 6 (47:14):
Texas lost by a touchdown to the best team in
the country, probably the best defense in the country coming
off the national title.
Speaker 4 (47:22):
Texas' defense was incredible.
Speaker 6 (47:24):
Do we have any doubt arch Mannings can get better
as the year goes on and won't face the defense
as good as Ohio State all season. I'm not off
the Texas trainer just because of one loss early on?
Are you off the arch Manning Heisman Trophy? Bit?
Speaker 4 (47:34):
I am well, Heisman trophy? How about number one overall pick? No?
I am this season, no chance. I think he's gonna
have gonna stay another year. He's gonna stay.
Speaker 3 (47:41):
He doesn't look ready, man, And I know, like that's
an acceptable game to struggle that Ohio State, the defending
national champions, the best defense he's gonna see all year.
But some of the mechanical stuff that is sliding out
last week, the like videos of him like flinching as
he throws it. It feels like something's weird with the
Arch Manning situation. I'm very curious to see what he
looks like this week.
Speaker 7 (47:59):
Where he might not be Jesus Christ as he was
made out to be. My thing is with these like
gods are hyped up super to the next level. It's
like Lebron like he was just a freak of nature athletically,
Like really, what is Arch athletically that that kind of
separates him apart from that regard.
Speaker 4 (48:16):
I appreciate that though. Thank you guys, all right, thank
you very much. You're good. Just watch your step.
Speaker 3 (48:22):
I think I talked about with Arch, like the fact
that he does have some athleticism, some dual threat, and
the fact that his last name is Manning. Everyone assumed
all those intangibles like translate. It's not that simple, man Like,
you're not like born with the genetics to be a
good football quarterback.
Speaker 4 (48:35):
You have to learn, you have to go through it.
And I don't think that his uncles won.
Speaker 6 (48:40):
Yeah, his uncles won between the ears, their preparation, how
smart they were, everything they did, the lone of scrimmage,
that's why they were great. It wasn't necessarily the arm talent,
and they both of them. So that's what he's going
to develop as he goes on. But I was talking
to a college football coach actually recently, and he was
telling me he was like, even before all this stuff
about Arch Manning's the hype everything coming to this season,
(49:01):
he said he would watch videos online with him training
and look at his mechanics and be like, this guy's
mechanics suck.
Speaker 4 (49:07):
Like I don't.
Speaker 6 (49:07):
Understand why he's getting this insane praise. And he's a quarterback.
He coaches quarterbacks. He was like, this guy's mechanics are
just off. I don't understand the praise. If your mechanics
are off like that, you're not gonna flourish against great defenses.
Speaker 5 (49:20):
Well, you're right, and that's why I'm very hesitant to say,
but I'm not like the quarterback guy, like I know mechanics.
Speaker 4 (49:25):
Yeah, now someone tells you that and you can see
some of that. Well, that has changed.
Speaker 5 (49:29):
And that's the thing I would say, is like the
Instagram days and stuff like that from his high school
time and that's legitimately the last time we really saw
him play. And I know he played a little bit,
don't get me wrong. Play he's got a cannon. He
had a cannon at a high school. He was throwing
it all over the place, and I don't remember that
side arm stuff. Look, I don't think is also huge. Yeah,
I don't think start didn't do him any favors with
(49:50):
the play calling against Ohio State.
Speaker 4 (49:52):
Gotta get him going as far as.
Speaker 6 (49:53):
Don't you think there's something to that, Like he probably
didn't do any favors and limited the playbook because he
doesn't trust him.
Speaker 4 (49:59):
He doesn't want to get hurt either.
Speaker 5 (50:00):
I kind of thinks direction here, can't you can't coach
against Ohio State in game one.
Speaker 4 (50:06):
I don't want my quarterback rolling. She don't want your
quarterback and hurt. But if that's his game, that's that's
how you have to put his game. So you can't
approach it him. I don't want my quarterback to get hurt.
Speaker 6 (50:15):
I think I think that's disingenuous as a play caller
even to approach it like that.
Speaker 5 (50:19):
At Week one on the road against Ohio States, I'm
putting some of those plays to the side.
Speaker 4 (50:25):
To keep it. I mean, he threw the dirt. He
was going to the right wide receiver ten yards on
the field. He's throwing into the dirt.
Speaker 3 (50:31):
Like often like like that was a concerning game of
film to look at that, and I think like the
mechanic side of things, I honestly think a portion of
this is like when you watch Patrick Mahomes do it,
it's the coolest thing possible. And I feel like that
has become kind of trendy and influential on a lot
of younger questions.
Speaker 6 (50:47):
Something to consider is he maybe not the easiest guy
to coach, not necessarily because anything he brings apparently is
a great attitude, because his uncles and the family and
then the respect around him.
Speaker 4 (50:58):
Is he maybe harder to coach?
Speaker 6 (51:00):
Then then you would think, like Steve sark Easing is
apparently this really tough nose coach and whole coach. Anyone
like that, but because of his family and everything that
comes with it, Like he doesn't nobody knows football and
quarterbacking better than his two uncles. Are people really going
to try to adjust what he does when those two
are his uncles?
Speaker 3 (51:15):
It's I think it's a disservice if Sark is not
coaching him the way he would coach anyone else. And
I haven't heard anything about Arch manning to indicate that
like that would be the case there.
Speaker 4 (51:24):
I get what you're saying with it, but I'm not
saying it's an Arch thing.
Speaker 3 (51:26):
Yeah, I have to believe that he treats him like
any other quarterback from a coaching standpoint, and that Arch
accepts that in the same way.
Speaker 2 (51:33):
I wouldn't believe that he's like closed minded, And.
Speaker 7 (51:36):
I think that goes hand in hand with he sat
for two years behind that. Yeah, he didn't just he
didn't just walk on to Austin, walk on the campus
and hear the keys go around the office, which he
would have at someplace, yeah, probably most most other places.
But they kind of had that plan in place there.
Speaker 5 (51:50):
For what do you expect to see from Arts when
you travel to Austin in November when they take on
the Razorbacks of Arkansas.
Speaker 7 (51:57):
Well, I think it's a night game, so I don't
but I don't know that that should be an interesting one.
Taylor Green a guy for Arkansas who they have played
two subpar opponents so far, but they have ole missed
this week. He's been lighting it up and these quarterbacks
in this Bobby Petrino system have fared pretty well. Look
at the guy who plays quarterback for the Baltimore Rave,
(52:18):
Bobby Patrino, Lamar Jackson. Taylor Green is a weapon like that.
So that's a guy to keep an eye off for
in his second year in this system. But yeah, headed
down to Austin for Longhorns Razorbacks.
Speaker 4 (52:30):
End of November. All right, here's the deal. We are
here till six o'clock.
Speaker 5 (52:35):
We still have some games as far as the professional
side of things to get into NFL Week two. But folks,
we got Friday night lights college football going down this evening,
So let's fire up DK. Make sure, using braces of promocol,
let him know you're listening to us here on the Gamblers.
We're broadcasting live from the field.
Speaker 4 (52:52):
Burger and tap. Trust me what I tell you. If
you were coming out to Penn State. You got a
slide by here. We can't wait to get myself a burger.
But this is a beautiful golf course.
Speaker 5 (53:00):
I got to talk to the boys and girls that
swinging and ding it and see if we can make
like a little trip out here as.
Speaker 4 (53:06):
You are seeing groups boys, You ever go on a
golf trip? I have not. You ever go on a
golf trip? You ever go on a golf trip? I
just I know, and yeah, you know, and and that's
that's the fair thing to say.
Speaker 5 (53:17):
Is like I didn't play golf until I was twenty one,
twenty two's I think it's the first time I ever
picked up clubs. But there's nothing better than a boy's
golf trip. Now you can only book a few one
in a year. Most of the spot Scottsdale, I've heard. Yeah,
I've been to Myrtle a few times. You've never been
a Scottsdale.
Speaker 4 (53:33):
Never been.
Speaker 5 (53:34):
Had the opportunity to go to Scottsdale for the Super Bowl,
but unfortunately I was unable to make it financially, and
and of course everybody was at the waste management that week.
Speaker 4 (53:46):
Unbelievable, could it? Could it? I gotta get to a
waste management. Yeah, die place looks wild.
Speaker 5 (53:52):
It's putty cracks these days though it's downhill, what is
it's a little bit downhill from.
Speaker 4 (53:56):
What it used to be. People are still there.
Speaker 5 (53:59):
No theresed to be, but like you know, swan diving
and rolling now now it's like you know, and now
you get golfers complaining these days about it. But anyways,
some other stuff there. So yeah, putting that to the side.
A golf trip here would be pretty cool. I see,
you know, good groups of like four or eight dudes
rolling through. It's obviously a golf trip and it's not one.
Do you got to take a flight to mrdle or whatever?
Speaker 4 (54:18):
So come on Thursday night.
Speaker 5 (54:20):
Yeah, so I'd be pitching, might be if calling goods listening,
Hey man, we might need to put this on the
calendar for twenty twenty six. Great to golf course out
here at the Tough Chrees all right, once again broadcast
live from the field, Bigger and tap other side Friday
night lights college football more after this.
Speaker 1 (54:36):
Spreads totals and all the prop that's in between.
Speaker 4 (54:39):
It's the Gambler
