starting here for, you know, twoof the great world's religions,
right?
You've got Judaism is also incelebration period with
Passover.
But for the Christian beliefsystem, you know, we have a
couple of folks coming here.

And then John Newt or Knutson.
St.
James, Santiago It

Double R (01:05):
is interesting.
Both of them have a similarslant, but a different slant on
the Easter celebration.
And we look forward to hearingfrom them.
Then we're going to talk withLori Architores about an Easter
event that has nothing to dowith Easter.

Son Paul (01:21):

year.
And it's the

Double R (01:24):

And you definitely want to staytuned to a little poem that
she's going to bring to us.

And it's about how it's broughtpeople together in the same
sense.

Double R (02:43):
Pastor John Knutson of the Episcopal Church joins us
next.
Goes by Knut.
Good to have you here.
Thanks so much.
It's a privilege.
The Episcopal Church on top ofthe hill with the school and a
lot of activity.

Rev Knutson (02:57):
Yes, yes, definitely.
We're right, actually rightacross the street from the fire
department, Station 14.
So a little sign up the hilland a wonderful group of people.
And not only the school, butthey do a lot of AA work.
programs and all of that aswell, and then also two
community meals a week, so somewonderful ministry.

Double R (03:17):
Talk about traditions of the Episcopal Church that
relate to Easter.

Rev Knutson (03:22):
Okay, so basically Holy Week would begin on Palm
Sunday, and kind of aninteresting service, kind of
like a whiplash, because itstarts with the celebration of
the entry of Jesus intoJerusalem, you know, the praises
and all of that as people comein, and then About halfway
through the service, it kind ofshifts, and then we end with the

(03:43):
story of the passion.
So there's this really longgospel reading that winds up
really being pretty solemn, andthen that's the beginning of
Holy Week.
And then after that, we have,of course, services on Thursday,
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Double R (03:58):
What time?

Rev Knutson (03:59):
Okay, so our services on Sunday are always at
9 a.m., And open for everybody,open communion, everyone's
welcome.
But then the other services area little bit different.
On Maundy Thursday, that wouldbe a Thursday evening service.
That's at 7 p.m.
And that service, again, isremembrance of the Last Supper,
Jesus instituting the HolyCommunion.

(04:21):
And so that service isdifferent because it actually
has the inclusion of washing offeet, which...

Double R (04:28):
Normally

Rev Knutson (04:29):
it would not be part of our service.
So that's once a year that wecommemorate what Jesus did in
being a servant to all people.
And so there's both the foodwashing and the Holy Communion
as well.
And a special remembrance ofthe Maundy comes from the Latin

(04:49):
word mandatum, which is thatmandate where Jesus says to love
one another as I have lovedyou.
And that's the whole focus ofthat Maundy Thursday Holy
Communion service.

Double R (05:01):
Are there a number of activities that are
family-oriented within theEaster celebration at the
Episcopal Church?

Rev Knutson (05:10):
Not so much at the church here, but a lot of
families would be doing Easteregg hunts and things like that
just to kind of help celebratethat whole experience as well.
But nothing out of the ordinaryduring that week.

Double R (05:24):
As you look at your ministry here in Lincoln City,
you bring to the table what,Pastor?

Rev Knutson (05:31):
I think part of it's just my background of being
with congregations in a varietyof different settings that have
really striven to be morewelcoming and trying to be more
hospitable to folks andunderstanding that it's a scary
thing to walk into a church forthe first time.
It can be very intimidating.
You don't know how people aregoing to respond or if you'll do

(05:54):
something embarrassing orwhatever.
And just trying to understandthat when people show up at the
door, they're already kind of ina very vulnerable place.
And so we really need to juststep and go over the top with
just letting them know thatwe're just glad they're there.
And whether or not they'rethere long-term or one time,
they're all in the journey withus, and we're all part of the

(06:16):
same family.

Double R (06:17):
Are there any misconceptions that you'd like
to debunk at this point in timeabout the Episcopal Church?
Well,

Rev Knutson (06:24):
probably part of it is that you have to be like
some sort of holy person have itall together, spiritual person
or something.
And that's the furthest, youknow, church is a hospital for
sinners.
We're all fallible.
We all make mistakes.
In fact, I make mistakes everysingle service.
I'm going to goof up something,I'm pretty sure.
And And we just go on.

(06:44):
It's where your heart's at.
And we're all just trying toplease God.
We don't have all the answers.
I think all denominations havetheir gift, and we all have our
blind spot.
And so we all try to bring ourbest to the table and to the
potluck and be the

Double R (07:00):
church together.
I guess there is a line in theScriptures, all of sin and fall
short, right?

Rev Knutson (07:05):
Yes, there is.
Yep.
And we're all there.
And the good thing is God'sgrace is for everybody.
I've always told people that...
I've never yet met a parentthat said, I'm going to wait
till my child gets to be acertain age or has a certain
experience or whatever.
And then I'll decide whether ornot to love them.
You love that child even beforethey're born.
And that's the way God's loveand grace is for us too.

(07:27):
It's just for all of us all thetime.
And, uh, God's the one thatkeeps reaching out to us.

Double R (07:33):
And again, so people can know Easter services, what
time at the Episcopal Churchhere in Lincoln City?

Rev Knutson (07:41):
Okay, so Easter service would still be at 9,
just one service.
And then we have two otheradditional services besides
Maundy Thursday and Easter.
On Good Friday, which would bethe Friday before Easter at
noon, we'll have another servicethat's more solemn, also has
the Story of the Passionservice, and all of that.
And then on Saturday at 8 p.m.,we have the Easter Vigil.

(08:04):
And that, again, is a verysolemn service with about 10
different readings and then HolyCommunion at the end of that.
And it's actually the firstEaster service.
The Easter Vigil used to be atime where people would, after
having the season of Lent, andgoing through preparation to be
baptized and become a believer, that would be the night that

(08:26):
they would become baptized, havecommunion for the first time,
be welcomed into the church.
We don't have that, but that'spart of the tradition of where
that started.

Double R (08:35):
Would you say that Easter and Christmas are
obviously the two biggestcelebration times in the
Christian church?
Does one outweigh the other?
Easter.
Easter death.
Why?

Rev Knutson (08:48):
Because it's the thing we know most of.
Even some of the Gospels,Gospel of John, a third of the
whole Gospel is just that lastweek of his life.
And we're all born, but none ofus has been crucified and
resurrected.
And that's where we find ourhope.
Christmas is beautiful, not totake anything away from that.

(09:08):
But Easter.
And that's why we have HolyWeek instead of Christmas Eve or
Christmas Day.
You know, it takes a whole weekto be able to kind of walk down
that path and really celebrateit the way and observe it and
celebrate it the way itdeserves.

And the Easter season is upon us.
With us is Pastor Jim Keys fromthe St.
Peter the Fisherman LutheranChurch.
Welcome.
Good to have you here.
Well, thank you for inviting meto your podcast.
It's just a wonderfulexperience to join in and talk
to the people of Lincoln City.
My name is actually pronouncedKyes.

(10:26):
Kyes.
And I said Keys again, and Iapologize for that.
Yes.

Unknown (10:32):
Yes.

Pastor Kyes (10:32):
You are the pastor of the St.
Peter's Freshman LutheranChurch, and we talked a little
bit about pastor, reverend.
You wanted to bring me up todate as to which you are and
why.
Okay, well, I'm a pastor, andthat is my title.
In the Lutheran tradition, wewill call somebody reverend

(10:55):
so-and-so, usually after they'veretired or they don't have a
call.
But if a person in the Lutheranchurch is called pastor, then
they do have a call in there, apastor of people called into a
church.
Interesting.
The reverend, of course, has adegree and so forth and has been

(11:16):
through seminary.
Now, Pastor Jim, you have a lotof activities planned for the
Easter celebration.
Tell us about them and whyspecific traditions.
Well, we traditionally haveHoly Week, of course.
And that's going to start April13th with Palm Sunday, and

(11:37):
that's going to be at 1030.
And we order palms, and we havepalms, and it's the time where
Jesus made his triumphal entryinto Jerusalem.
And we consider ourselvesorthodox Christians.
Christians, not like GreekOrthodox, but we're very

(11:58):
Orthodox.
And so our traditions that wehave reflect the life of Christ.
And particularly in Lent, whichwe're in now, the period of
Lent, but also during Holy Weekin specific.
Now, this is the time thatJesus...
went into jerusalem and theythrew their they waved palm

(12:23):
fronds and they threw theircoats in his wake you know
saying blessed is he who comesin the name of the lord you know
and they they honored him butsoon they they would turn
against him ultimately so thenwe have a monday thursday which

(12:43):
is also going to be at noon, Ibelieve.
And Maundy Thursday is the timethat Jesus was in the upper
room on the night that he wasbetrayed.
And this is, you mentionedPassover.
This was Jesus' Passover.
And the Passover comes notalways at the time of Easter,

(13:08):
does it, or does it?
Well, the Passover, the JewishPassover, comes at the 15th day
of Nisan in the Jewish calendar.
Like in the book of Exodus, itsays it comes in the month of
Abib.
But this is the Passover thatthey're supposed to...
It's called the Feast ofUnleavened Bread that was given

(13:31):
to them by Moses because of thelast curse that was upon the
Egyptian people, which was thethe death of the firstborn.
And the Jewish people were tosacrifice a lamb that was one
year old, without spot orblemish, that's bones were not

(13:53):
broken, and take it into theirhouse, and they were to take
with a hyssop branch and paintthe blood of the lamb on the
doorposts and the lentils.
And they were to only haveunleavened bread, because
unleavened bread, you have towait for it.

(14:16):
And they were pretty much onthe run at that time, and the
bitter herbs as well.
When they painted the blood onthe doorposts and lentils, this
was the destroying angel wouldpass over them.
And that's where you get Mosesactually instituted the Feast of

(14:36):
Unleavened Bread of Passover.
And this is the time in theChristian church, Maundy
Thursday, which would have beenJesus' Passover feast, the first
day of the Feast of Unleavenedwhen he was there in the upper
room.
And when Jesus says, take, eat, this is my body, this is my

(14:58):
blood, well, Jesus is literallysaying, I am the Passover lamb.
You are going to eat me as thesacrifice, as the lamb was a
sacrifice as well.
And so that's what he was doingin the upper room, and he
instituted in the upper room onMaundy Thursday the new

(15:20):
covenant.
that we live under today asChristians in his body and
blood, and we celebrate his bodyand blood.
Well, at the Lutheran Churchhere in Lincoln City, the
pastor, I was at another church,we had Holy Communion every
Sunday, but The Lutheran Churchhere in Lincoln City has a

(15:42):
tradition of every other Sundayor first and third.
First and third.
Yeah, that's what we do there.
And so Maundy Thursday, we'llbe celebrating that.
The next day was Sunday.
Good Friday.
So this is all Holy Week.
Okay.
And Easter Sunday, you haveservices?
At 10.30.

(16:02):
At 10.30 as well.
Yeah.
Are there family traditionsthat take place in the Lutheran
Church that are specificallyfamily-oriented?
I would say every service thatwe have.
Oh, very good.
And every...
is always family-orientated.
We have a Sunday school, and weencourage all families to join

(16:28):
in and worship Jesus.
Now, St.
Peter the Fish Lutheran Churchis located across the street
from Lincoln City Outlets, andagain, the services are open to
the public.
Oh, absolutely.
Absolutely.
We invite anybody to celebratethe kingdom of Jesus Christ our

(16:49):
Lord.
You can bet on that.

Lori Archer-Torres joins usfrom the Lincoln City Chamber of
Commerce, and we're gettingready for a garage sale.

Lori Arce-Torres (17:29):
We are getting ready for a garage sale.
It is a huge time of yearbecause we get calls all year
round about the great OregonCoast garage sale.
People plan their vacationsaround this garage sale.

Double R (17:43):
It is amazing.
It is amazing.
An event that was started orcreated and brought to Lincoln
City by my good friend, JoeDelavelle.

Lori Arce-Torres (17:52):
Oh, okay.
Good to know.
Long time ago.
We've been doing this for a lotof years.
I don't know exactly how many, but a lot of years.

Double R (17:58):
So how does one participate?

Lori Arce-Torres (18:00):
Well, we have been taking applications at the
chamber office for the lastmonth.
They're open all of March.
So yesterday was the last dayto submit an application so you
pay to get on the map weorganize the map so within your
application you write whatyou're selling so this is the
big thing for people to realizeyou know what's going to get

(18:22):
people to your garage sale soyou know make it unique make it
things that they are people areinterested in so on the map has
your address and what you'reselling So it goes all the way.
We start from Rose Lodge.
We're going down to Depot Bay.
And then this year we partneredwith the Newport Chamber.
So they joined in as well.

(18:42):
Yes.
Yep.
They've got, we've kind ofshared the same marketing.
So our logo, their logo.
We've got signs that they'reselling the exact same signs.
And the logo on the signs isalso in the paper.
So when you're driving around, you'll know that if you see this
Great Oregon Coast Garage Salesign, it's in the paper.

Double R (19:03):
To the point of what this does for the community.
You have a poem.
I do.
If you'd like to read that tous, where did it come from first
off?

Lori Arce-Torres (19:12):
Well, it's a group of women that this is
their thing every year.
They come to the Great OregonCoast Garage Sale.
So she contacted me and it'scalled Garage Sale Grannies.
So it's a group that...
I love it already.
They have t-shirts and it'skind of their big outing every
year.

Double R (19:32):
Would you Would you like to read it for us?
I would love to.
Wonderful.

Lori Arce-Torres (19:36):
It says, We are the garage sale grannies
headed for the coast.
We laugh and cry together.
Our weekend is no host.
We hit Lincoln City laughing onThursday afternoon.
Those who show up late we hopewill show up soon.
Bags pulled from the car, wemake our presence known.
Young men used to carry them.
Now we carry our own.

(19:56):
We settle into comfy, cozyrooms and rest a little bit.
Grab garage sale maps withcolored pens, go over it.
The pool and hot tub beckon, wetake a short, quick dip.
Now never mind that we limp orquickly rub an achy hip.
Now it's time for dinner.
We put on our matching tees, grab the casino shuttle, and

(20:18):
into those seats we squeeze.
We head for dinner together.
Wow, do we feel young.
We smile at each other.
Garage sale weekend has begun.
Who are the garage salegrannies?
We hear somebody ask.
We will try our best toexplain, though it is quick,
quite a task.
We are more like sisters.
On top of that, we're friends.

(20:38):
We truly care about each other.
Happy this time to spend.
Lincoln City, our destination.
We came from far and near.
We chuckled and called eachother as we jumped into the car.
The years have taught uslessons we never need to fear
when we get together we are gladthat we are here the mirror
tells us stories and we breakinto a grin remembering with

(21:02):
thanksgiving all the places wehave been the boy who called us
honey is now a much older guyour eyes once like an eagle's
glasses now must magnify we readred book in 17 we now read aarp
we rarely wear short shortshorts or skirts above the knee

(21:22):
in fact We'll be right back.
When we lose inches off ourbutt, it's a small disgrace.

(21:57):
Inches that we lose therebecomes wrinkles on our face.
Knees and hips are made ofmetal.
We wear an uplift bra.
Young kids under 50 have notseen the things we saw.
We now know who we are.
At last we have arrived.
When we look into the mirror,we thank God we are alive.
We can get together, share ourfailures and our fears, laugh

(22:19):
until our sides ache, and sharesome salty tears.
We've We've done our best to bethe best.
We have just begun.
This weekend is dedicated tosimply having fun.
The kids with their problems,we have left at home.
We confess to our dismay.
At last, these kids are grown.
The grandkids, we sure lovethem with all our heart.

(22:40):
Mom and dad can worry now.
We have done our part.
We are the garage salegrannies, the very best of
friends.
Next year, we hope we'll beback to do it all again.

Double R (22:50):
That was wonderful.
I

Lori Arce-Torres (22:52):
know, it's great.
That

Double R (22:54):
is marvelous.
Yeah, I love that story.
That really tells the story ofthe garage sale weekend.

Lori Arce-Torres (23:00):
It does.
And how, you know, kind ofwhat's happened through the
years, how long they've beengetting together.
But the best thing about it,it's something that gets them
together.
that they like to do together.

Double R (23:11):
So April 18, 19, 20, the registration is complete.
The map will be found where?

Lori Arce-Torres (23:18):
In the Oregon Coast Today newspaper.
So it'll be available online, Ibelieve April 11th.
And then it'll be in the April16th publication.

Double R (23:28):
Okay.
So don't miss out on findingthe bargain of a lifetime.

Lori Arce-Torres (23:32):
And I'm just going to apologize right now.
I've apologized a hundredtimes.
I'm sorry.
Sunday is Easter.
We have it on the third weekendof every single year.
So some years it falls onEaster and a lot of years it
doesn't, but it's third weekendof April, rain, shine, or
Easter.

Double R (23:49):
And how many people have registered?

Lori Arce-Torres (23:52):
We've got about 80, about 82 on ours.
And I'm not sure how manyNewport has, but there will be,
and people, you know, a lot ofthem don't register because
they're like, eh, people on myblock have registered.
So they're just going to putout their garage sales.
So there will be hundreds ofgarage sales in town.

Double R (24:10):
Again, it is April 18, 1920, sponsored by the Lincoln
City Chamber of Commerce, thegreat Oregon Coast Garage Sale.

Lori Arce-Torres (24:18):
Be patient.
Be patient.
with those garage sale hunters.
