In this episode, we delve into the tragic case of Ryan Hinton, an 18-year-old Black teenager from Cincinnati who was fatally shot by police on May 1, 2025, during a foot chase. Police allege that Ryan was armed and posed a threat; however, body camera footage leaves critical questions unanswered, prompting his family to initiate an independent investigation.
The following day, his father, Rodney Hinton Jr., was charged with aggravated murder after allegedly striking and killing a Hamilton County Sheriff’s deputy with his vehicle. This incident occurred shortly after Rodney viewed the bodycam footage of his son’s death, leading to widespread discussions about the psychological toll of police violence on Black families.
Through an abolitionist perspective, we examine how this case underscores the criminalization of Black masculinity and the systemic issues that perpetuate cycles of trauma and violence.
