Sustainability and race - did you have any idea that these two things intersected? Well, they do, and in a pretty big way. Environmental racism is something that many people are unaware of and that gets overlooked quite often, and yet its implications on health and wellness are astronomical! That’s what Kim and Aliya are here today to share about. These two sorority sisters-turned-business partners are women on a mission to bring eco-friendly and Black-owned baby products to consumers doorsteps and to make sure they are educating about social justice along the way.
When I first came across Kim and Aliya’s business, my first reaction was to get as many products from their site onto my baby registry as possible! After seeing the heart behind their work, though, I knew I needed to get them on the show. Today in Part 1, the Evergreen Baby team is teaching us about what environmental racism is and what it really looks like. This is a vast concept with many nuances to it, but they do a great job of giving us a rundown complete with examples and concerning effects of this type of injustice.
Next week in Part 2, Kim, Aliya and I will be talking more about their business and the products they sell. I wanted to know what their standards were for selling “eco-friendly” products and how they know that these items are truly safe. We talk about that and also about how we can help to fight the systematic oppression that is environmental racism, no matter what color we are! I absolutely loved learning from this duo and the information they shared with me has forever impacted my consumer habits. I think you’ll find the same to be true for you!

Ruthie's Table 4
For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
